2 The Chairman’s Chatter…. Paul Harris – South Midlands Chairman......

Welcome to the Newsletter for the South Midlands Region

To start this month’s Chatter, I would like to extend a warm welcome to David Brice, who has agreed to be co-opted onto the committee to organise and run Taster Days at Silverstone. We will be running the days with the co-operation of, in the first instant, BRSCC at the meetings they run at the circuit. We hope that we will be able to do the same with other clubs in the future.

Peter Lapthorne will be organising and running the Taster Days at Rockingham, so that for the first time we will be able to offer potential new members the choice of both circuits. Peter has already run 2 days at Rockingham this year. They were, I understand, extremely well received by the tastees and the co- operation we had from the management at Rockingham was excellent, in fact they bent over backwards to help us and even laid on transport to take people around the site to the different stop off points during the day.

While on the subject of Rockingham, our regional training weekend will again be at the circuit and although the final date has to still be agreed, it will hopefully be in mid to late February. Your committee has been briefed on the possible content of the weekend and I can assure you it will be like no other that the region has organised before. Further details will be published at a later date.

Chris Whitlock has, for personal reasons, decided not to seek re-election to the position of National Secretary at the National AGM in December. So the position will become vacant. If you have or know of anyone who has the ability to do the job of National Secretary and would like to apply for the position, then please, do get in touch with Chris at [email protected] and he will explain what is required.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris for all the work he has done over many years for both the club and the region and too wish him all the very best in whatever he decides to do in the future. I understand however, he does not intend to give up marshalling so thankfully we shall still see him on the bank.

National Council has decided to create a National IT Officer for the club, to take over, and develop all the IT functions that are in use within the club. Again, if you feel you have the necessary experience to do this job then again please contact Chris Whitlock at [email protected] and he will give you all the details you need.

You will see, in this newsletter the first notification of the Regional AGM which will be held on 24th October at The White Horse Silverstone. Please let us know if you wish to attend; as we have 10 places already booked.

I am looking for people to help man the clubs recruiting stand at the BTCC meeting at Rockingham on 5th/6th September and also at the BTCC meeting at Silverstone on 26th/27th September. I know a lot of you don’t like to marshal BTCC meetings for various reasons, so if you are not doing anything on these weekends please consider helping to recruit new members. After all, you may yourself have been drawn to marshalling via a recruiting stand, and you don’t have to do both days. Like marshalling you do what you can. Please let me know if you can help out.

3 Finally I hope you are all enjoying your marshalling days this year and have not been hit by any extreme weather, or at least not too often. See you on the bank.

Karting News

SHENINGTON:

As well as our normal Club meeting June saw the annual visit of the British Pedal Car Championship for their 24 hour race – the only 24 hour one in the calendar. The sun shone brilliantly for the first day of racing but the heavens opened for the Sunday morning but regardless they battled on. Here are a few photos of the event:

Just under 40 cars entered meaning the shorter circuit of 595m was used (they need 40+ to justify using the full track). The winning team completed 1174 laps over the course of the 24 hour race. An amazing feat. There must have been some sore leg muscles the next day!

Our July meeting (after the date of submission of this article!) will feature our renowned Superprix with the added bonus of displays and racing by the Historic Kart Club. As usual one highlight is the Saturday evening Pig Roast. This event used to be held in June but was moved to July this year due to clash in calendar dates with another championship meeting. I will write a brief report in the next edition.

On a personal note, those of you who have attended the many Training Days I have organised over the years may remember my son David who was the brains behind the Powerpoint presentations – he has now become a dad! David’s wife Emily gave birth to a beautiful baby boy on 10 June – Peter Samuel. Once he is old enough he will be in a kart at Shenington!!

6

2015 dates from Aug onwards are as follows:

Shening ton: 15 / 16 Aug 11 / 12 / 13 Sept (Super One) 19 / 20 Sept 17 / 18 Oct

14 / 15 Nov 28 / 29 Nov (replaces Dec meeting)

Please contact me on the details below re marshalling at Shenington. If you do volunteer via the BMMC Marshalling website please also contact me as soon as possible as sometimes I cannot accommodate all requests (though I am always grateful for volunteers, it is just that we have a strict limit on numbers)

Formula Kart Stars

Formula Kart Stars is a British based Karting Championship supported by Bernie Ecclestone and Management, current double Formula 1 World Champion and FKS ‘Old Boy’ , and Lewis’ father Anthony Hamilton. The Championship was established back in 1995 when McLaren boss , Mercedes boss Norbert Haug and Karting legend Martin Hines got together to create a Junior Karting Championship called the McLaren Mercedes Champions for the Future. The aim was to bring karting to a wider audience and most importantly provide a path for young drivers who wished to pursue a career in motorsport and in particular, Formula 1.

Today FKA is committed to the road to Formula 1 through racing and education. FKA endeavours not only to provide a Championship that encourages competition with sportsmanship, but one that also encourages and educates youngsters in dealing with the press and media, which is an increasingly important part of motorsport today. Whilst not forgetting that the on track activity is of course of primary importance, a great deal of weight I placed on sportsmanship and family. The Championship has four classes for competitors aged 8 to 17. Each competitor signed up to Formula Kart Stars will receive all equipment, tyres, fuel, fees, storage, awning space and transport of their kart for the season. The Championship season will consist of 1 pre-season test day followed by 12 rounds taking place over 6 weekends. Each race weekend will be preceded by an Official test.

Each competitor will receive a minimum of 80 minutes of track time per race day and Official test day. Each round will have practice, three heats and a final. There is an extensive prize list, with the super FKS champion winning a funded year in single seater racing.

Great emphasis is being placed on the development of the drivers so the organisers are looking for experience marshals to man the circuits for each round, they have asked BMMC to become involved. We will be co-ordinating the volunteering for marshals, aiming, wherever possible to have a group who will marshal at as many of the rounds as possible.

Each marshal will receive a contribution of £50 towards their expenses for each round of the competition, with a special arrangement being made to help those who can attend the ‘off shore’ round at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland. Arrangements are also being made to provide food and shelter for all marshals at every round.

Wendi Batteson, our South West Chairman, will be acting as the co-ordinator. Those who have already expressed an interest are asked to complete the pro-forma attached and e-mail a copy to her, as is anyone else who is interested.

I hope you will volunteer for at least one round of this championship – it is a great opportunity to be involved in what could be the early development of a future Formula One World Champion.

Foreword

Welcome to the 30th Carfax Stage Rally, promoted by Oxford Motor Club

This will be our second running at Throckmorton Airfield, near Pershore in Worcestershire. Following last year’s eventful first rally where we experienced such a wide variation in the weather with one of the wettest mornings of the year and then bright sunshine for the afternoon which gave the crews some interesting tyre choices, we have listened to the feedback from competitors, landowners and local residents. We have carried out some restoration of the airfield surface which broke up and have respected the noise concerns of the landowners and residents and moved the event to a Saturday – the early Carfax rallies having run on Saturdays way back in the 1980s

In size, the airfield is similar to Down Ampney, but the runways and perimeter tracks are still at their full operational width, rather like Abingdon. The surfaces are 50% good concrete and 50% asphalt (of good to reasonable quality) so we will be looking to set out our usual enjoyable flowing type of stages and to run the event with the usual Oxford Motor Club efficiency to give competitors plenty of opportunity to enjoy the stages. The announcement of this year’s Carfax Stage Rally has already generated a lot of interest and enquiries so we urge early return of entry forms and payment to avoid any disappointment. Of course, we would be most grateful for the support of marshals and radio operators who will find the Chief Marshal’s details further into these Regulations. Latest updates will, of course, be available on the website www.oxfordmotorclub.co.uk We look forward to seeing lots of familiar and new faces at Throckmorton on th Saturday 8 August 2015.

Indy Cars - Fontana, California 27th June 2015

Last night we watched what Carlsberg might describe as probably the best Indy Car race ever, from Fontana in California, a wide 2-mile oval. Sixteen or eighteen of the 23 starters ran in a close pack for all 250 laps/500 miles. We sometimes had a line of four abreast, closely followed by another line of four abreast, followed by a third line of three or four abreast, heading into the first corner at recorded speeds of up to 223 mph. Cars could then slingshot from tenth to first or first to last, dependent upon just how the pack made it through the corner.

Leigh Diffey, the Oz commentator who does F1 and Indy, was going spare with excitement. Steve Matchett, ex F1 mechanic, was urging them on. Paul Tracy, ex Indy driver renowned for hard driving, said that there must be something wrong with anyone who did not enjoy this style of racing. We found it exciting to watch, even on TV.

There was a couple of shunts within the last 25 laps but everyone survived.

Surprise was at the end, when some of the drivers and Penske team manager, declared the whole thing "crazy, crazy, crazy". Apparently they had approached Indy organisers before the race to stop the bunching that they foresaw as inevitable and possibly lethal. They likened it to the Las Vegas race where poor Dan Wheldon lost his life.

Before that race, Dario Franchitti and others declared the whole thing unsafe and Dario, and others, laid low in the early laps to avoid "the crazies". If I remember correctly there were 35 starters for the race in Las Vegas (a tighter, 1.5 mile circuit!), the added complication of some "part-time" contestants, plus Dan starting from the back in a bid to win $1M for charity.

Will Power, current champion, was one of the cars shunted off in the last 25 laps at Fontana. He seemed genuinely scared. Tony Kanaan, said it brought back sad memories of Dan's accident. Tim Cedric of Penske seemed to indicate that he would be approaching the organisers to make sure there was never this situation again. A J Foyt said there was bunching when he raced and he thought the Fontana race was great, even though his driver Sato was punted out in the last few laps. (Sato gets involved in a lot of shunts, including the one that caused Dario to retire. On an earlier incident where Sato took out Dario, Dario said that Sato had hit every car except the safety car!)

Sadly, most of the spectators came dressed as empty seats! I would have put the crowd figures in single figure tens of thousands.

It really was one of the most exciting races we have ever watched but the post-race comments quite confused us. It will be interesting to read what the comics make of it on Thursday.

We did also watch Formula E broadcast live from Battersea. Interesting, a very narrow track but overtaking nonetheless - I am not sure I like the noise! Is this the future?

Regards

George

Kop Hillclimb 2015 Napier Railton and Sunbeam VII

It’s that time of year again! Probably the friendliest, easiest going meeting of the year. Guaranteed lunch breaks, lunch packs and the grateful thanks of all the entrants.

Kop Hill near Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire has been a speed hill climb for motorcycles and motorcars since 1910, but was closed in 1925 when a student lost control of his Bugatti and went into the crowd, signalling the end of closed roads racing in this country.

On Saturday, 19th and Sunday, 20th September 2015 there will be the seventh revival meeting. The event will not be a timed speed hill climb but rather a commemorative run to recall Kop Hill's glorious past. A sort of mini-Goodwood (as it used to be in the early days!) on closed public roads! Last year we had over 15,000 spectators over the two days and raised almost £50,000 for local charities.

Our plan is for 400 motorcycles and motorcars taking to the hill over the weekend, (about 220 each day), the majority of which will be Veteran or Vintage that could have taken part in the early days of the run, together with a whole host of vehicles up to 1972 plus a class for modern exotics.

We have already closed the entry list – we were oversubscribed and have been selecting the most interesting cars for the event. This year we not only have the Napier Railton from Brooklands,

but also the Sunbeam VII.

On Saturday each session will end with the appearance of the Napier Railton, the 24 litre holder of the Brooklands speed record. It excited the Kop Hill crowds in 2013 and, on its return, will do so again. On Sunday the sessions will end with the 3 litre 1920 Sunbeam VII. This car won the Isle of Man TT in 1922 and in 1925 set the second fastest time up Kop Hill, driven by Sir Henry Segrave.

I am organising all the marshalling and will be acting as Clerk of the Course. I am again looking for a full team to run the event. Please have a look at the web site or talk to any of those who have marshalled the previous events – I guarantee a great weekend.

15

Details are here:-http://www.kophillclimb.org.uk/.

It should be a really good event - if you can help please contact me as shown below. Please title your e- mail 'Kop Hillclimb' and let me know if you would like to work in the paddock or on the hill. I look forward to a deluge of replies. Those who did the event over the last five years will tell you just how superb it is.

Falcon Motor Club Ltd Kensworth Taster Car Trial 13th September 2015

Hello Everyone,

Falcon’s Taster Event Car Trial takes place again this year on Sunday l3” September at our Kensworth venue. Everyone is welcome to come along and take part either as a Driver, Passenger or Marshal Kensworth is just off the A5 near Dunstable.

Regards

Dave Dave Maitland Secretary of the Meeting

Introduction

The aim of the Kensworth Taster Trial is to introduce new competitors, marshals and passengers Young, Old, Male, Female, to the sport of Car Trials without the need for a competition license or club membership card.

Competitors as young as 14 years old can take part (subject to conditions,) in this event.

The format of the event will begin with a short drivers briefing followed by a period of free practice on the marked sections on the slopes at Kensworth. After lunch there will be a gentle competition, for those that wish to take part, where drivers can test their newfound skills. There is even a small prize for the Novice class winner.

Passengers will be able to sit along side drivers and assist them by “Bouncing” to help gain grip and progress further along the test.

Marshals will get close to the action along side a more experienced marshal and learn how to score and observe the cars in action.

Experienced drivers are also welcome to give their cars a shake down after the summers rebuild or to try different settings, something you can’t do at a normal event.

Le Mans 2015 – A Meeting of Old Friends

This year I had the great good fortune to be invited by my friends Bod Rae & Maggie O’Malley to accompany them as a guest when they were marshalling at the Le Mans 24 hours. It turned out to be a reunion of a number of old friends.

In 1984 John Davallou (aka JD) and Richard Ceune-Grandidier (aka Kermit) took 24 British Marshals to Le Mans and established the first “all British” post. I was one of those marshals and two others; Tony Bush and Phil Steward are still on the team. I say “all British” because when we started the ACO insisted that there must be a French Post Chief despite both JD and Kermit being fluent French speakers. Even today there is one deputy Post Chief Jeanne Louis, who is French, but the rest of the team are all British.

Tony Bush is now the Chef de Post for Zone Dix Neuf (19) and he ran the post with two deputies Jean-Louis and Mick Blazeby which split the team into two shifts. Brands marshals might well remember Mick and Denise Blazeby; they moved to France some time ago and like Tony are resident there. Also in the Team are Glyn (Willie) Williams and his two mates Kevin & Fred; I introduced them to the joys of marshalling the Nurburgring 24 hours. Tony, his wife Irene, Mick and Denise, Willie, Kev, and Fred spent ages reminiscing about the old days at Brands, Le Mans and the Nurburgring. It was good to see Glynn was introducing his son Sam to the joys of endurance racing. Having been to the ‘Ring a few weeks previously Sam was the Le Mans “virgin” and like all young lads he never stopped grazing. It was good to meet new faces like Jesse and Finn, and the two Duncans from Combe. Tony said if he had known I was going to be there he would have included me in the team. Knowing his team had been cut and he had been forced to drop some regular members I told him that would’ve been unfair.

18

Our itinerary included the Test weekend and the 24 Hours with a week break at Clermont Ferrand walking in the Auvergne, but that is another story. On the Saturday of the Test weekend we had to collect passes for Sunday and took the opportunity to visit the Pit Lane. just finished a piece to camera as we arrived and dashed off to another appointment, the place was crowded, TV crews everywhere, presentations on the grid, teams setting up fuelling rigs and amongst it all extrication crews being shown how the lifting kit on the breakdowns worked! Then chaos as every car was brought out and pushed the length of the pit lane for scrutineering. On Sunday the big question was are the lights working? Sometime the post had control, sometimes Race Control, and sometime neither! At one point when we put on our yellow lights the next post automatically went green. Great if we wanted the yellow for an incident, but we wanted it for a Safety Car; that’s when Race Control should have taken command! A bone of contention, were we a Post, Sector or Zone? An important communication issue that I will come back to later but it was determined we were zones.

Race week we collected passes on Tuesday and determined that as Bob & Maggie were on the late shift for Wednesday I would stay with them and come off post at midnight. It gave me a chance to take a few night shots of the cars. For the second year running the ACO were using “Slow Zones” to control car speeds locally at incidents rather than having to resort to Safety Cars. When an incident occurs the Post Chief can ask for a Slow Zone, Race Control will ask the previous post to prepare for a Slow Zone, then declare Slow Zone at Zone x. The previous post then displays a “Next Slow” board and single waved yellow and the Slow Zone displays “80 kph” board and double waved yellows. There are Zone markings at the side of the track immediately after the flag point to indicate where the speed limit begins and speed is monitored by GPS. Zone 19 is located on the rise where took off; the crest has been flattened now but if we were to have an incident it would be a big one with cars passing at about 250 mph. Thank fully we only needed to display “Next Slow” for incidents at Mulsanne corner. The Slow Zones seem to work well allowing Safety Cars to be kept to a minimum.

19

The ACO have commissioned a special film to celebrate this year’s race and Zone 19 will feature quite strongly. There was a dedicated film crew covering the post and both Bob Rae and Tony Bush were subjected to lengthy interviews. In fact Tony was “miked up” for much of the race so he had to watch what he said. It was a great honour for the British Team to be chosen as an example of marshalling. The film is expected to be shown in cinemas later this year and segments should already be on the ACO website. Perhaps Bob & Tony need an agent?

Bob & Maggie were on the early shift for Thursday practice so they took the hire car and I was left in Tours to do some sightseeing. Come race weekend I had the hire car so I could come and go as I wished. The Zone communication issue? At the start of the race the message “All Posts Green Flag” was broadcast, followed shortly by “Post x why is your green light not on?” to which Post x replied “I am a Zone not a post!”

I had a shower and a lovely meal in a restaurant called L’Hedonist in Tours on Saturday night while Bob & Maggie were eating salads and sleeping under “canvas” on post. Being a guest has its advantages, but I did miss some of the campsite camaraderie. I was under strict instructions to be back on post by 11:00 latest on Sunday so Bob & Maggie could get the tent packed away before going on post for their last three hour stint. There was virtually no traffic so I managed to arrive well before their previous shift finished at 09:00. I then had a chance to wander round to the exit of the 2nd chicane where I found Bob Sketchley, John Williams and a host of other Brits, and some good photo opportunities. Returning to Zone 19 I stopped for a beer in Paul Harris’ palatial trailer tent, Paul having just finished marshalling.

And the race? Well it was good to see Porsche back on the winners podium and the front engine Nissan was awesome going down to Mulsanne corner with sparks flying. It’s a shame though that the credit is being given to the GP drivers; Hulkenberg spent the least amount of time in the car, Nick Tandy the most. Considering they all have to drive flat out whose car was it…..? Most of all though Le Mans gave me a chance to catch up with some old friends that I hadn’t seen in years and enjoy their company on post. That’s what marshalling is all about.

Motorsport Rescue - Recruitment

As a long-time member of South Midlands BMMC, I thought I’d give a magazine article a go to see if other members of BMMC / BRMC in my region wanted to try something different.

For one of my many sins, as well as marshalling at race and other types of MSA permit meetings I organise a VOLUNTARY motorsport safety group (Rescue Services Rutland [RSR]), who through a common interest in motorsport safety have come together to form several self-financed specialist units for use at virtually all types of organised 4 wheel motor sports events run throughout the UK. Things are getting steadily busier and we have a requirement to increase our voluntary membership to meet expected needs.

If you fancy something different and have the ability to cope with a fairly steep learning curve, gaining experience with mechanical cutting plus medical stabilisation & extrication devices amongst many other specialist motorsport rescue skills and you’re prepared to give up one or two days per month to training / crewing to gain experience on a rescue unit / stage safety unit at motorsports events varying from MSA Autocross to Race, through Rally and Speed (Sprint and Hillclimb) plus Competition Safari events across England, Wales and Scotland, this may be for you.

Within our voluntary group we currently have access to (see www.rescue-services.co.uk): An MSA licensed Rescue Ambulance (call sign): Cobalt Rescue [4x4 Land Rover 130 based] – crew chief Chris Gwilliam

An MSA licensed Stage Safety Unit of (call sign): Flashpoint Response [6x6 Range Rover classic based] – crew chief Nige Chapman

An MSA licensed (heavy) Recovery unit (call sign): Solent Recovery [4x4 Land Rover 130 based] – crew chief James Bates

What's Involved in Motorsport Rescue Training?

You must be a minimum of 18 years and be prepared to attend a training day to see how everybody gets on with each other. Here you will play with the rescue unit equipment to get a better idea of what it’s all about (cut up parts of a car, etc.), using hydraulic cutting equipment weighing close to 20kg which will make your arms and shoulders ache the next day. If everyone is happy with each other and what we’re trying to do, apply through a rescue crew chief for acceptance to train.

In your first year you will be required to attend one approved Marshal Training Day (Race, Speed, Rally or Off-Road) including fire training and radio procedure training (RSR can organise these). The RSR team will also organise certificated First Aid plus pre-hospital medical gas (oxygen, oximietry, Entonox and aspiration techniques) plus AED training. The medical courses are annually re-qualified to keep you current.

Complete a modular training programme detailed on a training record booklet, gathering appropriate signatures. Collect 10 signatures from a rescue Crew Chief for attendance at 8 MSA race, rally or speed events with at least 3 events from each of 2 types of motorsport disciplines (such as 3 sprint events, the rest rally, etc.) Attend a minimum 2 training days per year (all 10 within a maximum two year period). Finally, attend an approved Motor Sports Association Ltd (governing body for UK motor sport) Rescue Licensing Assessment.

Here you must demonstrate to independent assessors your familiarity and competence in the operation of all equipment including identification and preparation of medical equipment. Thereafter, attend and pass 3 yearly assessments. Satisfying respective Crew Chiefs that rescue training, rescue event attendances and equipment and technique updates have been completed between assessments (usually several weekends run over the quieter winter months).

22

What Will We Do For You?

We’ll provide some of the personal protective equipment such as helmet, googles and when qualified overalls (we can lend sets if required), you need to sort appropriate toe protector high ankle books and suitable gloves for rescue applications (we can recommend what types at a training day).

Some of the events necessitate an overnight stay (either the night before because of distance or the Saturday night of a 2 day event) and RSR will cover B&B costs and lay on tea, coffee and other drinks at the events, plus when in remote locations (middle of a forest stage), free hot pack meals, etc. All you have to do is get to Normanton (between Stamford and Oakham just off the A606) to jump on the transport and we’ll take you there and back for free, or meet up enroute, etc.

Our main training venue is currently split between Rockingham Race Circuit (courtesy Nick Breed circuit manager) and the Stamford fire station which has both a classroom and a hard standing at the rear for us to cut cars on.

If you think this may be something for you, RSR has organised summer Rescue training days of:

By George Copeland NationalTreasurerofthe BritishMotorsportMarshalsClub This book is an attempt to record the history o motorsport marshalling in the UK and the British Motorsport Marshals’ Club (BMMC) in particular. The history is not well documented and it took two years of fairly intensive “digging” to extract enough informatio form a reasonablyaccuraterecord. nce 1957,the Marshals’ Club has been at the hear every major marshalling initiative. Its Training an ading Scheme has been widely copied around th orld, with Marshals’ Club training and grading note anslated into many different languages, sixteen a e count, includingthree differentChinesedialects. Most importantly, the Club is a collection of quite disparate characters. They come from all walks o life and give their time freely to the sport, in retur for the enjoyment they get from doing so, thei husiasm for the sport and the camaraderie tha exists in marshalling ranks. They are a talente nch and despite the voluntary nature of their dutie generally considered to be among the best in the rld for the professionalism they bring to moto sport safety. All profitsfromthe sale of this bookwill go to Marshals’ Club funds. SPECIALDISCOUNTPRICEFOR BRITISH MOTORSPORTMARSHALS’CLUB
