Welcome to the Newsletter for the South Midlands Region To start this month’s Chatter, I would like to extend a warm welcome to David Brice, who has agreed to be co-opted onto the committee to organise and run Taster Days at Silverstone. We will be running the days with the co-operation of, in the first instant, BRSCC at the meetings they run at the circuit. We hope that we will be able to do the same with other clubs in the future. Peter Lapthorne will be organising and running the Taster Days at Rockingham, so that for the first time we will be able to offer potential new members the choice of both circuits. Peter has already run 2 days at Rockingham this year. They were, I understand, extremely well received by the tastees and the co- operation we had from the management at Rockingham was excellent, in fact they bent over backwards to help us and even laid on transport to take people around the site to the different stop off points during the day. While on the subject of Rockingham, our regional training weekend will again be at the circuit and although the final date has to still be agreed, it will hopefully be in mid to late February. -

History The beginning of competition Motoring events began soon after the construction of the first successful gasoline-fueled automobiles. The first organized contest was on April 28, 1887, by the chief editor of Paris publication Le Vélocipède, Monsieur Fossier. It ran 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from Neuilly Bridge to the Bois de Boulogne. It was won by Georges Bouton of the De Dion-Bouton Company, in a car he had constructed with Albert, the Comte de Dion, but as he was the only competitor to show up it is rather difficult to call it a race. Another solo event occurred in 1891 when Auguste Doriot and Louis Rigoulot of Peugeot drove their gasoline-fueled Type 3 Quadricycle in the bicycle race from Paris–Brest–Paris. By the time they reached Brest, the winning cyclist Charles Terront was already back in Paris. In order to publicly prove the reliability and performance of the 'Quadricycle' Armand Peugeot had persuaded the organiser, Pierre Giffard of Le Petit Journal, to use his network of monitors and marshalls to vouchsafe and report the vehicle's performance. The intended distance of 1200 km had never been achieved by a motorised vehicle, it being about three times further than the record set by Leon Serpollet from Paris to Lyon.[1][2] Auto racing 2 Paris–Rouen: the world's first motoring contest On July 23, 1894, the Parisian magazine Le Petit Journal organized what is considered to be the world's first motoring competition from Paris to Rouen. -

If you interested in any of these do please let me know. You can see more of what it is about by visiting www.formulakartstars.com I’d like to thank members for the responses so far, and I know all forms of racing are now at times finding it difficult to get enough of the orange army to cover all the events particularly at club level. Chairman's Chat How expensive can motorsport get ? There is much talk about the mandatory requirement for Frontal Head Restraints for all circuit racing, stage rallying, hill climbs and sprints from 1st January 2016. While competitor safety is obviously paramount this requirement will significantly increase the cost of the sport which may well result in the loss of existing competitors or put off new ones. At a higher level it seems totally wrong to potentially lose the Monza GP because the organisers will not be able to afford the ridiculous fee demanded by Mr Ecclestone. The F1 calendar should include all the classic circuits and not just the ones owned by those who can afford to put vast amounts of money into his huge piggy bank. I have said this before but it‟s time he retired and let someone who has the good of the sport at heart rather than sheer greed.
