The Chairman’s Chatter…. Paul Harris – South Midlands Chairman......

Welcome to the Newsletter for the South Midlands Region….

A very happy New Year to you all.

Another day another dollar: so says the old adage. Another year another training weekend says South Midland Region. Yes; we are at that time of the year again when we have to sort out our probans for the coming season, and complain they have shrunk since we last wore them, even though they were not washed over the closed season. This year’s Training Weekend is again at the Rockingham Motor Speedway near Corby on 7th/8th February. You will all, by now, have received you booking forms and hopefully will have sent them back to John Turner to book your place on the weekend. If you have not done so, then please do, as you guys are the ones who make the weekend a success.

A new feature for this season is the opportunity to volunteer on line for any, or all of your marshalling days this year. Last year the North Region of BMMC launched an online system which proved very successful and now Council has decided to use the same system and have “rolled” it out nationwide. Please use the system, it is there to help you and will cut out all the postage incurred with posting your slips to each and every club you want to marshal for.

You will by now have been sent instructions on how to register you name on the system. All you need to do then is to follow the links and register your availability for any meeting you wish to marshal at. At the moment the system does not allow you to volunteer for Rallies, this anomaly will be sorted in due course.

Don’t forget that it is now up to you to change any of your personal details on the national database and this can only be done if you have registered, You will not now be able to blame anyone else if your contact details are incorrect. Please use the system; it is there to help you.

th As usual your region is organising the club stand for Race Retro on 20 , 21st and 22nd February if any of you are intending to be there, please come and say Hi!!!!!, it does make the day go quicker.

A reminder to you all the Noggin and Natter evenings are still going strong at the White Horse Silverstone starting at 8pm. Further details can be seen on the BMMC South Mids Regional website.

Have a safe marshalling year.

Keep safe

New Members

Well, 2015 has arrived, we have new members looking forward, in most cases, to their first year of marshalling. I would like to welcome them to the club and our region, as usual, if you cross their path at a meeting, please extend a hand of welcome.

This year if the opportunity arises let’s try to encourage more marshals to join our club.

Steve Caldwell, Leighton Bromswold Thomas Smith, Oxford

Les Garratt, Milton Keynes David Weston, Swindon

John Morecroft, High Wycombe Al Woodward Jr., USA

Steve Slack, Rothwell

Renewals

Have you renewed your membership yet, you should have received a renewal email in December. If for some reason you didn’t, the renewal form is available on the website. Your club is encouraging members to renew using direct debit wherever possible, however paying online by credit/debit card or by cheque are still available options.

The link to the forms are here:

Renewal Form www.marshals.co.uk/resources/77515071764.doc Direct debit form www.marshals.co.uk/resources/39225211156.pdf

If you have renewed and are waiting for you 2015 membership pack please be patient with 2500 members it does take a while.

Change of Details

I received a complaint from a marshal (not our region) that they had not received their 2015 membership card yet. I explained about possible delays and asked for their details so I could check progress. It turned out that the member had moved address and changed email address also. The new membership card had been sent to the old address.

Can I ask you all to access the database, if you have not already, to check and update your personal details, there is also the opportunity to enter your next of kin details. If you don’t tell us or update the details we don’t know.

The link is on the home page of the website www.marshals.co.uk then click on ‘Volunteering Website’. Once you have logged in click the symbol in the top right corner, looks like a monopoly piece this will take you to the database page.

SHENINGTON:

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. We kick off the Shenington year with our first meeting on 17/18 Jan but prior to that I organised an informal training day / get-together for Shenington marshals on 10 Jan – thanks to those who attended. We covered various areas and had a lot of lively discussion. Don’t forget the Kart Marshal Training Day organised by Harry Heath at Whilton Mill on Sunday 29 March 2015.

The first weekend of 2015 saw the Shenington 2014 Awards Evening and Dinner Dance at the Stratford Manor Hotel. Well done to all the award winners but very special congratulations to two people in particular:

Phil Rowlands, Kart Marshal who was presented with the Norman Palmer Memorial Marshal Trophy – a very worthy winner of a trophy which the late Simon Walker introduced when Norman Palmer passed away. Well done Phil.

The other award winner I must mention is Max Speed (a very appropriate name!) who was nominated for the Most Improved Cadet Award as well as the Perseverance Award. Max won the Perseverance award – he is only 9 years old and started karting through Let’s Go Karting Scheme at Shenington. Well done Max, it is a real pleasure to see one of our ‘home grown’ karters winning such a prestigious award. 2015 dates from February are as follows:

Shenington: 14 / 15 Feb 14 / 15 Mar 21 / 22 Mar (Easykart – not SKRC) 18 / 19 April 8 / 9 / 10 May (Super One) 16 / 17 May 20 / 21 June 17 / 18 / 19 July (Superprix, including Historic Kart Club – note this is a month later than usual!) 15 / 16 Aug 11 / 12 / 13 Sept (Super One) 19 / 20 Sept 17 / 18 Oct 14 / 15 Nov 28 / 29 Nov (replaces Dec meeting)

Jaz Bareham South Midlands Rally Rep BRMC Treasurer www.brmc.org.uk MG Car Club Donation to the Marshals Club

I am extremely pleased to say that the MG Car Club, thanks to the generosity of its competing members has donated £1,750 to the club. This is an appreciation from the club and its competitors for all the hard work you have done during their meetings over the last 12 months. They fully appreciate that, without marshals, there would be no motorsport as we know it. The Club’s Chief Marshal, Paul Stilling commented that the MG Car Club have always been appreciative of the marshals and are keen that this appreciation could be expressed in a tangible way.

The donation will be used to replace the one from SUNBAC, which we have been using to subsidise the purchase of overalls, but which has now run out. This will allow us to keep the cost of overalls at a minimum for our members. MGCC will be providing badges which our supplier, AWS, will sew on to the sleeve of every pair of BMMC overalls purchased by our members to show their sponsorship.

Ron Gammons, Chairman of the MGCC Race Committee added “The marshal’s efforts are vital to our motorsport activities and the competitors felt that they would like to contribute. It’s the Club’s intention to donate a £1 for each race competitor entry throughout 2015 to add to the funds so that an additional sum would be donated in 2016.” The MGCC Race calendar for 2015 is:

• 29th March Mallory • 2nd, 3rd May Brands Hatch • 31st May Donington • 20th 21st June Silverstone GP Circuit. • 12th September Oulton Park International • 10th 11th October Snetterton

Please give the club all the support you can when considering the meetings for which you are volunteering.

Chris Hobson National Chairman Formula Kart Stars

Formula Kart Stars is a British based Karting Championship supported by Bernie Ecclestone and Management, current double Formula 1 World Champion and FKS 'Old Boy' , and Lewis’ father Anthony Hamilton. The Championship was established back in 1995 when McLaren boss , Mercedes boss Norbert Haug and karting legend Martin Hines got together to create a junior karting championship called the McLaren Mercedes Champions of the Future. The aim was to bring karting to a wider audience and most importantly provide a path for young drivers who wished to pursue a career in motorsport and in particular, Formula 1.

Today FKS is committed to the road to Formula 1 through racing and education. FKS endeavours not only to provide a Championship that encourages competition with sportsmanship, but one that also encourages and educates youngsters in dealing with the press and media, which is an increasingly important part of motorsport today. Whilst not forgetting that the on track activity is of course of primary importance, a great deal of weight is placed on sportsmanship and family. The championship has four classes for competitors aged 8 to 17. Each competitor signed up to Formula Kart Stars will receive all equipment, tyres, fuel, fees, storage, awning space and transport of their kart for the season. The Championship season will consist of 1 pre-season test day followed by 12 rounds taking place over 6 weekends. Each race weekend will be preceded by and Official test.

Each competitor will receive a minimum of 80 minutes of track time per race day and Official test day. Each round will have practice, three heats and a final. There is an extensive prize list, with the super FKS champion winning a funded year in single seater racing.

Great emphasis is being placed on the development of the drivers so the organisers are looking for experienced marshals to man the circuits for each round, they have asked BMMC to become involved. We will be co-ordinating the volunteering for marshals, aiming, wherever possible to have a group who will marshal at as many of the rounds as possible.

Each marshal will receive a contribution of £50.00 towards their expenses for each round of the competition, with a special arrangement being made to help those who can attend the “off shore” round at Nutts Corner in Northern Ireland. Arrangements are also being made to provide food and shelter for all marshals at every round. Wendi Batteson, our South West Chaiman, will be acting as the co-ordinator. Those who have already expressed an interest are asked to complete the pro-forma attached and e-mail a copy to her, as is anyone else who is interested.

I hope you will volunteer for at least one round of this championship – it is a great opportunity to be involved in what could be the early development of a future Formula One World Champion.

By George Copeland National Treasurer of the British Motorsport Marshals Club

This book is an attempt to record the history of motorsport marshalling in the UK and the British Motorsport Marshals’ Club (BMMC) in particular. The history is not well documented and it took two years of fairly intensive “digging” to extract enough information to form a reasonably accurate record. Since 1957,the Marshals’ Club has been at the heart of every major marshalling initiative. Its Training and Grading Scheme has been widely copied around the World, with Marshals’ Club training and grading notes translated into many different languages, sixteen at one count, including three different Chinese dialects. Most importantly, the Club is a collection of quite disparate characters. They come from all walks of life and give their time freely to the sport, in return for the enjoyment they get from doing so, their enthusiasm for the sport and the camaraderie that exists in marshalling ranks. They are a talented bunch and despite the voluntary nature of their duties are generally considered to be among the best in the world for the professionalism they bring to motor sport safety. All profits from the sale of this book will go to Marshals’ Club funds.
