That child was Kal-El of , the sole survivor of a cataclysm that destroyed one of the most advanced and ancient civilizations in the galaxy. It was their love and care that would transform one of the world's most powerful individuals from the product of a cold alien civilization into one of the noblest and charismatic men alive. Kal-El is, however, more widely known by the name, Superman. It was as the costumed "" Superman an identity designed to preserve his privacy as Clark Kent and to protect his adopted family that Kal-El had his biggest impact. He was the leader of Earth's superhuman and often much of the human community and served as the role model that all subsequent heroes were measured by. In his career, he saved the world from the threats of interstellar invasion, natural disaster and the continued activities of a of "super-villains" including the original, the early Bizarros and the sentient anti-sun . During this time, Superman rose to the height of his activities, married his beloved , served as leader of the and acted as a mentor to a new generation of heroes. The vast powers that served to make him Superman also made Kal-El essentially immortal. He would watch as he outlived his parents, then his friends and then even his wife Lois. Still serving as the world's foremost champion he began to slow as the sadness of the losses began to mount. Legend then tells how close to the end of the twenty-first century Superman Prime as history will remember Kal-El passed the responsibilities of being Superman to his heir, Superman Secundus , and created the Superman Dynasty. Then one day he left Earth. His travels lasted from the 21st Century and ended somewhere at the turn of the th Century. During his travels, he acquired vast abilities and skills from across the universe. When he returned he forged a covenant with his descendants, he would bestow upon them a small fraction of his power as long as they served for truth and . After the covenant he left and returned into his in the center of the Super Sun. When Solaris fired what he thought was the Knight Fragment at the Sun in order to kill Superman Prime, the retrieved a DNA sample from Solaris' core which had been placed there when he was constructed, starting a reaction in Solaris' core. The Green Lantern then attempted to contain the explosion with his power ring. He was joined by Kal Kent who used his force vision to contain the explosion. Superman Prime suddenly reappeared from the sun after fifteen thousand years of absorbing solar energy and crushed the tyrant sun once and for all with the Green Lantern ring that Solaris had inadvertently given to him. The time he spent in the sun magnified his already great power to presumably infinite levels. His strength and other countless abilities he gained also rose to unknown levels from the time he spent in the sun. In the aftermath of Solaris' destruction, a lot was revealed about Superman Prime's hibernation in the Super Sun. During this period, he had been waiting for Solaris' attempt on his life because he had foreknowledge of the events thanks to his time-traveling younger self. As a Kryptonian, Superman is capable of processing and storing information far faster than any ordinary human being is able to. Superman has stated that his overexposure to the Sun tripled his intellectual capabilities. He is a skilled scientist and inventor, concocting a serum granting Kryptonian abilities and matching it with a person by analyzing their entire DNA sequence, leaving instructions on how to combined Kryptonian and human strands , coming up with a way to cure any human disease , and inventing a machine that converts thought into sounds and visuals , a suit that protects him from lethal red solar radiation , as well as a time telescope that enables him to speak with descendants many centuries into the future. Superman is also highly resourceful and quick- thinking, as he was able to build a rocket out of scraps with Zibarro in order to escape Bizarro-World. He also possesses high deductive skills, answering the unanswerable question and has massive battle experience with all kinds of powerful beings. Outsmarted Luthor by using a gravity gun to force his metabolism to accelerate , depleting Luthor of his serum. Is destined to complete 12 super challenges , with his final challenge to repair the Sun and build an artificial heart for it. Weaknesses: excluding Green , Stellar Radiation of a red star, Magic, X- vision does not work on lead, Superman is slowly dying from an overdose of solar radiation. Very cool. Not even to ! So, what does it say that this treatment of one of the most iconic of American myths is the product of three, ahem, Scotsmen? Or more to the point: sometimes it takes an outsider to fully appreciate what we have in our own back yard. Morrison has said that his Superman is a metaphor for America at its best. He is the embodiment of basic human goodness despite the fact or perhaps because of it? So: to America apply their talents to an American who is an outsider to Earth. True, there is the promise of a second coming, but the Kal-El we have known and loved is gone. Even if DC were right now to stop publishing any more Superman stories for the rest of eternity oh, as if , Superman would live forever, and not just because he is a masterful design of red, yellow and blue. Most artists would have drawn Clark has slightly smaller than Superman, or maybe just forgone the whole thing and drawn him the same proportions as Supes. With the release of the Absolute edition a few weeks back, I poured over each enlarged page looking at all the beautiful amount of details that Quitely puts into his art. I spent a good ten minutes on each panel, engrossing myself into the world that the two have built. The back of the Absolute has some great back matter, a lot of it pertains to ideas and concepts that Morrison had to drop — which is a shame — and the rest is dedicated to expanding upon the characters present within the book. His shoulders pull back, within the span of two people he gains confidence and direction, his posture changes and you completely understand why no one would think Clark Kent is Superman.
