Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. Coyote, will take place at The Museum of Modern Art from March 19 through March 22. The program includes a screening of 12 cartoons on Saturday, March 19 at noon, two showings on Sunday, March 20 at noon and 2:30 at which Mr. Jones will be present to discuss his work, and repeat showings of the Sunday programs on Monday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 22 at noon. The film programs, selected by Greg Ford, historian of the American an imated film, are designed to show Chuck Jones' development at Warner Brothers, where he was director of animation for 26 years. Jones began his career in a representational style heavily influences by Disney, but soon developed a more abstract, zanier style of cartooning, shown in "The Dover Boys" of 1942 with its lurched-tempo motion, and "The Aristo-Cat" of 1943 with its expression- istic backgrounds. It was during the fifties, however, while working with Warner's stable of cartoon stars, that Jones fully developed his style, based not on exaggeration but continual refinement. It is a "personality animation," according to Greg Ford, "marked by logical application of space, movement, and editing ideas, and by very subtle drawing that keenly deliniates character attitude." Among the films to be shown during this tribute are "What's Opera Doc," (1957), "Duck Amuck" (1953), "Ali-Baba Bunny" (1957) and "To Beep or Not to Beep" (1964). -

Perhaps the art of comic book drawing is seen as some kind of lower form of art compared to fine art and in days of computer enhanced graphic drawings that sometimes appear to lose their very soul, Bianchi demonstrates a passion and love of drawing that can transcend those narrow minded boarders. These works on paper exist as pure drawings, superbly rendered with the aforementioned ink and watercolour washes along with pencil and acrylic paints to create images that can be appreciated as standalone works of art. -

In June 2018, he stepped down from the position of Chief Creative Officer (CCO) of DC Entertainment to focus on producing and writing. Contents. Career. Stargirl Comics. Geoff was close to his sister, Courtney who died in 1996 due to the TWA flight 800 disaster. She was eighteen at the time and was on her way to France to be a foreign exchange student. Three years later in 1999, Geoff sold his first comic book proposal to DC Comics. He called it, "Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E.". It starred Courtney Whitmore, the second Star-Spangled Kid, later known as Stargirl, alongside S.T.R.I.P.E.. It was a story about how a family is created by bond, not blood. Stargirl was named after and inspired by his sister, Courtney. It is her spirit and optimistic energy that he wanted to put back in the world with Stargirl . Creating Stargirl TV Series. In July 2018, Geoff Johns announced a Stargirl series, where he, along with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, would pen and executive produce the show for the OTT DC Universe service. [1] For casting, he wrote the role of Pat Dugan specifically for Luke Wilson, and mailed him a copy of the script along with a personal letter. They spoke about the role and Luke eventually signed onto the project. After landing Brec Bassinger as the titular character Courtney Whitmore, he sat down and spoke with her for hours on his plans for Courtney and the series.
