  • Constructing the Witch in Contemporary American Popular Culture
"SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES": CONSTRUCTING THE WITCH IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE Catherine Armetta Shufelt A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2007 Committee: Dr. Angela Nelson, Advisor Dr. Andrew M. Schocket Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Donald McQuarie Dr. Esther Clinton © 2007 Catherine A. Shufelt All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Angela Nelson, Advisor What is a Witch? Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans.

  • Tribute to Chuck Jones at the Museum of Modern Art. Animator
NO. 25 The Museum of Modern Art FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modemart TRIBUTE TO CHUCK JONES AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART ANIMATOR WILL BE PRESENT CHUCK JONES: THE YEARS AT WARNER BROTHERS, a special four-day program honoring this famous animator and director of such stars as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, the Roadrunner, and Wile E. Coyote, will take place at The Museum of Modern Art from March 19 through March 22. The program includes a screening of 12 cartoons on Saturday, March 19 at noon, two showings on Sunday, March 20 at noon and 2:30 at which Mr. Jones will be present to discuss his work, and repeat showings of the Sunday programs on Monday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 22 at noon. The film programs, selected by Greg Ford, historian of the American an imated film, are designed to show Chuck Jones' development at Warner Brothers, where he was director of animation for 26 years. Jones began his career in a representational style heavily influences by Disney, but soon developed a more abstract, zanier style of cartooning, shown in "The Dover Boys" of 1942 with its lurched-tempo motion, and "The Aristo-Cat" of 1943 with its expression- istic backgrounds. It was during the fifties, however, while working with Warner's stable of cartoon stars, that Jones fully developed his style, based not on exaggeration but continual refinement. It is a "personality animation," according to Greg Ford, "marked by logical application of space, movement, and editing ideas, and by very subtle drawing that keenly deliniates character attitude." Among the films to be shown during this tribute are "What's Opera Doc," (1957), "Duck Amuck" (1953), "Ali-Baba Bunny" (1957) and "To Beep or Not to Beep" (1964).

The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body.

GENDER ROLES AND BLACK STEREOTYPES IN WARNER BROS. CARTOONS: FROM HONEY TO BABS BUNNY Xavier FUSTER BURGUERA 1 Abstract: This essay will use a Tiny Toons episode, “Fields of Honey”, as an excuse to survey stereotypical female and racial roles depicted in the most representative cartoons of the 20 th century. It is particularly relevant to go back to a 1990s cartoon series since, in that decade, Western animation was undergoing crucial changes in its conception which would determine significantly the upcoming animated instalments of the new millennium. Moreover, contemporary cartoonists are now those grown-up children that watched the earlier American cartoons whose allegedly unconscious female discrimination and “innocent” racism might somehow have been fossilised among its audience and become thus perpetuated in the culture and imaginary of the globalised world. Finally, it is also important to be acquainted with the contents of cartoons understood as children’s products, especially in a period where television is taking over most of the parental duties and guidance in children’s development into adulthood. Key words: popular culture, media and animation studies, gender roles, black stereotypes, Warner Bros., Tiny Toons. 1. (December 2010) Bhuvana Devigere Mallikarjunaiah, B.E., Visveswaraiah Technological University, India Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Louis G. Tassinary American film parody can be characterized as a distorted, comical and yet affectionate imitation of a given genre or specific work. Film noir as a genre with its distinct visual styles has been an easy target for such “creative criticism.” Mel Brooks, famous for his series of successful parody films, has exhorted that the situation alone must be absurd while the actors must be serious, not funny to make a comedy funnier. He also said that funny is in the writing and not in the performance itself. Film noir through its unconventional visual styles and convoluted story lines engenders feelings of anxiety and paranoia in the audience, providing rich fodder for parody. The animated theatrical series Looney Tunes with its trademark slapstick style is well suited for making serious situations look absurd, affording “creative criticism”.
