Music and the American Civil War
“LIBERTY’S GREAT AUXILIARY”: MUSIC AND THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR by CHRISTIAN MCWHIRTER A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2009 Copyright Christian McWhirter 2009 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Music was almost omnipresent during the American Civil War. Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans. -

The Complete X-Files Ebook
THE COMPLETE X-FILES PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Chris Knowles,Matt Hurwitz | 224 pages | 23 Sep 2016 | Titan Books Ltd | 9781785654336 | English | London, United Kingdom The Complete X-Files PDF Book In one of the most tongue in cheek, unusual episodes of the series, Scully consults with a Truman Capote-like novelist who wants to write "non- fiction science fiction" based around an unusual x-file, giving an outsider's perspective to a case. You may not need files for most quick fixes. It's an unnerving, calculating episode, where the mere appearance of Modell onscreen spells very bad thing. There's also a lot of heart in the episode, with Boyle portraying a sensitive, gruff loner dealing with the worst of curses. The episode seems to be heavily influenced by the works of H. Essentially, the episode is about the government using television signals to drive people to madness. This not only makes filing faster but makes it much easier to find documents afterward. An FBI manhunt ensues, with agents in pursuit of an antagonist that can alter their very perceptions of reality. The beauty of customizing your filing system this way is that it can always be further subdivided and organized if you need to. This grisly, nightmare-inducing episode about an inbred family of killers was so terrifying and controversial that Fox famously decreed that it would never be aired again after its initial broadcast prompted a flood of complaints from concerned viewers. I could stop at that as a reason to watch, but there's more. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. -

2006 AEN Conference Special Issue
SPECIAL ISSUE ––– 2006 AEN CONFERENCE VOLUME V ISSUE 1 2010 ISSN: 1833-878X Pages 27-34 Olivia Caputo Water and Stone: The Re-Enactment of the Masculine in the Pagan ‘Reclaiming’ Tradition ABSTRACT This paper seeks to explore models of masculinity present within the contemporary spiritual community of the Reclaiming Collective in San Francisco, United States of America. The Reclaiming Collective is part of the wider contemporary Goddess spirituality movement, a movement which promotes the importance of changing patriarchal images of the divine through focus on the Goddess. Through an analysis of both the writings of Starhawk, the most read and published member of the collective, and the discussions and articles with the collective's long-running journal Reclaiming Quarterly this paper reveals the conflict between patriarchal and more radical models of masculinity. It concludes that the fluidity of gender promoted within the Reclaiming Collective stimulates members to understand masculinity as positive, anti-sexist and multifaceted. BIOGRAPHY Olivia Caputo is a PhD candidate at The University of Queensland's School of History Philosophy Religion and Classics. Her research involves critique of gender theory in the writing of two pioneers of the feminist Goddess movement, Carol P. Christ and Starhawk. Olivia has travelled to both the U. S. and the U. K. to gather material about contemporary Goddess communities such as the Reclaiming Collective in San Francisco and the Priestesses of Avalon in Glastonbury. She has presented papers at the Alternative 27 Expressions of the Numinous conference in 2006 and at the Association for Research on Mothering conference in 2007. Her other research interests include community radio, sustainable agriculture and the alternative D. -
Disagreeing in the Service of God: Jews and Christians Need One Another, Argues an Esteemed Orthodox
Disagreeing in the Service of God Jews and Christians need one another, argues an esteemed Orthodox rabbi in his latest book. An interview with Rabbi Irving Greenberg After the publication of "For the Sake of Heaven and Earth," Rabbi Irving "Yitz" Greenberg spoke to Beliefnet senior editor Alice Chasan about the book, which traces the development of his thinking about Jewish-Christian relations and argues for a pluralist theology that commands followers of each religion to embrace the unique contributions of the other. You've spent many years dedicating yourself to Jewish-Christian dialogue. What is your goal? Who said I have a goal? What I mean by that is that, as I indicated in the book's opening essay, some of this grew out of the experience. I didn't necessarily know what I was doing when I started. Therefore, my comment is, this is all retrospection. I think the big issue that I stumbled into unintentionally, perhaps, is one of the big issues of religion of our time—the encounter of powerful and meaningful religions with each other, in what I think is unprecedented in human history. It is a direct and unmediated encounter—and in what is in many ways a highly open and sympathetic environment between religions, identities, and cultures. This is the underlying issue of pluralism and of freedom. I confess I didn’t start with those ideas. In the modern era, people for the first time in history were brought together geographically in the cities, culturally open to one another. For the first time, the "Other" is no longer other. -

The Mystic Will 2
The Mystic Will 2 THE MYSTIC WILL A Method of Developing and Strengthening the Faculties of the Mind, through the Awakened Will, by a Simple, Scientific Process Possible to Any Person of Ordinary Intelligence by CHARLES G. LELAND In Memorium Charles Godfrey Leland AMERICAN AUTHOR WHO DIED MARCH 20, 1903 AT FLORENCE, ITALY AGED 79 "The good that men do lives after them." PUBLISHER'S NOTICE. This wonderful treatise was first published in England several years ago, under the title of "Have You a Strong Will?" and has run through several editions there. In its original form, it was printed in quite large type, double−leaded, and upon paper which "bulked out" the book to quite a thick volume. Some copies have been sold in America, but the price which dealers were compelled to charge for it, in its original shape, prevented the wide circulation that it merited, and which its author undoubtedly desired for it, for it seems to have been a labor of love with him, the interest of the race in his wonderful theories evidently being placed above financial returns by Mr. Leland. Believing that the author's ideas and wishes would be well carried out by the publication of an American edition printed in the usual size type (without the expedient of "double−leading" unusually large type in order to make a large volume), which allows of the book being sold at a price within the reach of all, the publisher has issued this edition along the lines indicated. The present edition is identical with the original English edition with the following exceptions: (1) There has been omitted from this edition a long, tiresome chapter contained in the original edition, entitled "On the Power of the Mind to master disordered Feelings by sheer Determination.
