Bauman, Major Professor The present study explored a minority oppositional religious culture, which continued practicing despite overt hostilities to their practices. The qualitative research project utilized interviews and observations of the Gardnerian Wiccans in Broward County, Florida. The narrative data were transcribed, coded, and categorized into three themes related to the following research questions: Why would individuals create a secretive religion? Given they had to practice in secret, what about this religion had people seeking out information and joining Covens? What would keep this group together despite opposition from dominant culture? INTRODUCTION Religion has continually taken the forefront of the world stage as religious tensions play a major part of the unrest not only, in the Middle East but also around the world. According to the International Report of Religious Freedom, provided by the State Department to the U.S. Congress annually, the year 2013 witnessed the largest displacement of religious communities since the report’s inception in 1998. “All around the world, individuals were subjected to discrimination, violence and abuse, perpetrated and sanctioned violence for simply exercising their faith, identifying with a certain religion, or choosing not to believe in a higher deity at all” (US Department of State). The purpose of the report was to inform the U.S. Congress which countries violate major religious freedoms, as well as to detail the U.S policies in those countries which promote religious freedom. For instance, the 2013 report noted that in Pakistan, more than eighty Christians were killed in the Peshawar church bombing by Muslim militants. Yet, the incident motivated other Muslims to create human chains around Christian churches to prevent further bloodshed. In essence, while opposing religious faiths created a violent situation, the same religious attitudes facilitated a way to bridge the gap. The human Muslim chains were voluntary and thus, according to the State Department report, U.S. policies should be directed toward encouraging similar interreligious support (US Department of State). Inside the U.S. borders, the government has not instituted a national report on religious freedom. Instead, in 1993 Congress passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993, Pub. L. No. 103-141, 107 Stat. 1488. The act was created to ensure that the federal government could not curtail religious freedom. The Supreme Court, in 1997, 1 ruled that the act was unconstitutional because the federal government cannot regulate state governments. Yet, many states proceeded to pass similar laws to protect their citizens. However, the problem of religious freedom; that is who has the right to religious freedom and in what manner religious freedom can be displayed is still being played out in the Supreme Court today (Bomboy). In Florida, the tensions between religions played out on a smaller scale as influxes of immigrants with different religious affiliations began moving to Florida in 1950s. For instance, as the Cuban immigrants moved into South Florida they brought with them the religion known as Santeria. Santeria sacrificial practices were offensive to the existing population thus, in 1987: the city of Hialeah banned the use of animals in ritual sacrifices (Kilpatrick). The Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye sued the city for violation of their religious freedom (Kilpatrick). The case against Hialeah reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993 where the ban was unanimously overturned on the basis of freedom of religion guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. While the ruling settled the legal issue, social sentiment against Santeria practices remained. While technically Santeria was not a Contemporary Pagan religion, the manner in which the city treated Santeria practitioners was of extreme importance to the Contemporary Pagan community which resided in South Florida. A case which was more important to the Contemporary Pagan community than the case in Miami was north of Broward County in the City of Palm Bay. In 1993, a neighbor observing a Wiccan ritual in a private yard called the city to complain. The city responded to the complaint by citing the homeowner for zone violations. The homeowner brought the matter to the local court with the result that the judge referred the issue back 2 to the city council (Leagle). Eventually, the homeowner negotiated with Christian organizations that held Bible studies on personal property. Appealing to their interests, the homeowners attained the support

Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans.

    Deus Ex Machina? Witchcraft and the Techno-World Venetia Robertson Introduction Sociologist Bryan R. Wilson once alleged that post-modern technology and secularisation are the allied forces of rationality and disenchantment that pose an immense threat to traditional religion.1 However, the flexibility of pastiche Neopagan belief systems like ‘Witchcraft’ have creativity, fantasy, and innovation at their core, allowing practitioners of Witchcraft to respond in a unique way to the post-modern age by integrating technology into their perception of the sacred. The phrase Deus ex Machina, the God out of the Machine, has gained a multiplicity of meanings in this context. For progressive Witches, the machine can both possess its own numen and act as a conduit for the spirit of the deities. It can also assist the practitioner in becoming one with the divine by enabling a transcendent and enlightening spiritual experience. Finally, in the theatrical sense, it could be argued that the concept of a magical machine is in fact the contrived dénouement that saves the seemingly despondent situation of a so-called ‘nature religion’ like Witchcraft in the techno-centric age. This paper explores the ways two movements within Witchcraft, ‘Technopaganism’ and ‘Technomysticism’, have incorporated man-made inventions into their spiritual practice. A study of how this is related to the worldview, operation of magic, social aspect and development of self within Witchcraft, uncovers some of the issues of longevity and profundity that this religion will face in the future. Witchcraft as a Religion The categorical heading ‘Neopagan’ functions as an umbrella that covers numerous reconstructed, revived, or invented religious movements, that have taken inspiration from indigenous, archaic, and esoteric traditions.

As a religious association with an ideology different from traditional Judeo-Christian faiths, members are often labeled as deviant and subjected to various negative sanctions. By relying on survey data collected on April 9-12, 1996 and in depth personal interviews collected on October 10-13, 1996, this study presents a model that best describes and explains acceptance and participation in Pagan spiritualism. This study identifies three characteristics associated with positive ratings of childhood religious affiliation (church disaffection, family closeness, and iv membership role), three characteristics associated with feelings of belonging to the Pagan community (church disaffection, social support, and participation), and finally examines a member’s disclosure of their Pagan identity as being a function of occupational prestige, weighing the costs of negative sanctions versus the Pagan value of openly expressing a Pagan identity, and self-efficacy.

The Reclaiming Collective is part of the wider contemporary Goddess spirituality movement, a movement which promotes the importance of changing patriarchal images of the divine through focus on the Goddess. Through an analysis of both the writings of Starhawk, the most read and published member of the collective, and the discussions and articles with the collective's long-running journal Reclaiming Quarterly this paper reveals the conflict between patriarchal and more radical models of masculinity. It concludes that the fluidity of gender promoted within the Reclaiming Collective stimulates members to understand masculinity as positive, anti-sexist and multifaceted. BIOGRAPHY Olivia Caputo is a PhD candidate at The University of Queensland's School of History Philosophy Religion and Classics. Her research involves critique of gender theory in the writing of two pioneers of the feminist Goddess movement, Carol P. Christ and Starhawk. Olivia has travelled to both the U. S. and the U. K. to gather material about contemporary Goddess communities such as the Reclaiming Collective in San Francisco and the Priestesses of Avalon in Glastonbury. She has presented papers at the Alternative 27 Expressions of the Numinous conference in 2006 and at the Association for Research on Mothering conference in 2007. In this brief etymology, we get a sense of beginnings, of origins, of starting a particular action or event, a chain of events, of tradition, but with a touch of the mysterious, of secrecy. Yet this secrecy implies both speaking and not speaking, since the term initiation in phonetics refers to one of the two mandatory aspects of sound production in the human body, the other being articulation. Allow me to articulate. In this context, initiation is the action by which airflow is created through the vocal tract. So it is the act of creating speech, a speaking that at once must be silenced when brought into the realm of ritual initiation, where individuals participate in secret rites, beginning their study of the ineffable, whether it be in the religious, esoteric, or communal sphere. To add a further level, the term initiation is also used in chemistry, indicating a chemical reaction that triggers one or more secondary reactions. So an initiation causes a chain reaction. It creates a process. It does something. Further, it does something through speech. It performs. Ideally, initiation also transforms. It allows for a deeper negotiation between the known and the unknown, offering a seemingly privileged view of the universe to the worthy candidate.
