At this time of year, herd animals become more visible as forests lose their leaves and the rutting season occurs. Elk is a great teacher and leader. People who follow this path likewise have exceptional wisdom and determination. Furthermore, the darkening hours and cooling weather bring people indoors to enjoy such community activities as storytelling or learning new crafts. Children study diligently in the schools. For this spell, you need an image of a hoofprint. Elk’s cloven hoof represents the two halves of education—teaching and learning. Hold the hoofprint in your hand and say, “Elk of the mountains, open my eyes. Teacher and student, let me be wise.” Draw the Elk energy into your symbol and seal it there. Choose a familiar skill to teach someone else, or a new skill that you want to learn. Keep your hoofprint image with you to improve your insight as you work. At the end of each lesson, think about what you have taught and learned, because they always come together, like the two toes of an elk.     A Basic Format for Spellcasting and Ritual This is my generic format for spellcasting and for rituals. It's set up for one person, but could be easily adapted for use in a group setting (for instance, you'd make the circle larger, and would say "WE thank the Goddess" rather than "I thank the Goddess"). Of course, you can change it as you see fit; nothing is cast in stone. It borrows heavily from the writings of Silver RavenWolf, Gerina Dunwich, and Starhawk. A word of warning: one writer has said that the way magick works is by making everything fall apart. The Deities have a sense of humor. Don't be surprised if you get what you ask for ... but in an unusual container. Before you do anything else, write out a Statement of Purpose. Make a list of everything that you want to ask for: guidance about your job, healing for a friend's daughter, success in some upcoming endeavor, healing of emotional hurts, accuracy in divination, strength to put up with the jerk you work with at your office, wisdom to make a special decision. This is the "meat" of the session. Be "generally specific," i.e., define the qualities of what you want but leave yourself open as to HOW it will manifest. Remember that you're not giving a grocery list to the deities; you're asking for their help. Of course, you don't even have to ASK for anything; you can circle to celebrate a Sabbat, or just to "hook up" with the Other Side.

    Paganism Communal Worship, Rites of Passage Communal Worship, Rites of Passage Summary: Many Pagans emphasize physical practice, often through rites of passage and regular or seasonal communal rituals. One particular place of focus for a plethora of Pagan practitioners is the lunar cycle, with the full moon serving as a time to meet and perform rituals together. Pagan worship and devotion takes many forms. Just as the Pagan movement as a whole is diverse, so are Wiccans, Druids, and Heathens. Within each of these groups, there are many paths and traditions, each with their own variations of ritual and liturgy. The Pagan emphasis on practice, however, is nearly universal, as is the emphasis on physicality. Engaging the senses with movement, music, incense, flowers, colorful costumes, beautiful altars, and delicious food and drink, Pagan ritual celebrates the experience of being embodied in a sacred world. For regular worship, some groups meet on a regular weekly or monthly schedule, according to the availability of the members; other groups time their meetings with a lunar calendar. Wiccans and other Pagans believe that energy can be drawn down from the moon and that this energy (often associated with feminine divinity) can be brought into a practitioner or channeled into a magickal working. The full moon is a time of increase and abundance, considered the best time for raising energy or consecrating spells. The dark of the moon is considered a time for initiating a new beginning, exploring hidden matters, and contemplation. One typical Wiccan ritual is the full moon circle. Wiccans begin by purifying themselves and the space with water and incense.

P a g e | 1 Introduction and Homework 1 Merry Meet! I am delighted to "see" so many of you here for my workshop. Things I hope to cover during this two weeks include how to tell a pagan from a witch from a Wiccan as well as how to write a believable character from any of those backgrounds. We will talk about words to use and words not to use if you want to stay true to the genre. I've been Wiccan for a long time now. I received my training through a coven in Toledo, Ohio and have been involved with others throughout the states. I have students of my own now and do some mentoring as well. I teach with a local group here in Denver. The College of Wicca And Old Lore has been in existence for five years. We just started our Earth Quarter for 2003. I will talk about that a bit more later in the week. Right now is a great time to talk about witches and wizards and warlocks and the like. It's Halloween after all! Parties and candy and costumes and fake blood rule at the stores these days. But, Halloween used to be a different critter back "in the day".
