WELLESLEY, MA 01746 (781) 235-3210 [email protected] PROLOGUE [ALL] GLINDA GREETS THE AUDIENCE CURTAIN OPENS. Behind the curtain is GLINDA. She looks at the audience with wonder.] GLINDA_PP What a wonderful audience. So many excited and eager faces. Are we all ready for an adventure? Watch one another’s back now. Things do sneak up on you in Oz. Fortunately, they can be very nice things... (points to back of house) Like that... 1ST SONG - FIREWORK ACT I, SCENE 1 [PP] IN WHICH DOROTHY IS CALLED BEFORE THE WIZARD. CHARACTERS: WIZARD, DOROTHY, SCARECROW, LION, TIN MAN [Head of Wizard hovers before audience. Below, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man tremble in terror. Mid-runner curtain is closed behind them. Also onstage is a booth with a hanging curtain. Thick ducts branch out from the booth.] WIZARD I am the great and powerful OZ! Who dares approach me? [Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man shove Dorothy forward. Dorothy looks back at them.] SCARECROW_PP You got this. LION_PP We’re right behind you. [Dorothy turns toward Wizard. Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man shuffle backwards. Dorothy turns to them, noticing the increased distance.] TIN MAN_PP Right behind you! 2. WIZARD (to Dorothy) Who are you? DOROTHY_PP My name is Dorothy. Dorothy Gale. WIZARD And where do you come from, “Dorothy Gale”? DOROTHY_PP Kansas. WIZARD Kansas? (long pause) What is Kansas? DOROTHY_PP It’s a place. My home - and I so want to return. A tornado picked up my home, picked up me and my little dog - only, he’s not so little anymore. When the house fell - oh! - the most terrible thing happened... [We hear the sounds of a tornado, a foundation being torn up, a dog yapping as the lights go down. Audience is left in the dark as the sounds play.] ACT I, SCENE 2 [SL] IN WHICH THE MUNCHKINS DETERMINE IF DOROTHY IS A GOOD WITCH OR A BAD WITCH CHARACTERS: DOROTHY, TOTO, GLINDA, FERÍA, BOQ, DIP, PUMPKIN, JELLY, COCO, HONEY, CINNAMON [Mid-runner opens. Lights slowly return, revealing a house that has crashed down in the middle of Munchkinland. Beneath the house are two legs wearing striped tights and ruby shoes. Door falls off hinge to reveal DOROTHY. She steps out and looks around.] DOROTHY_SL Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore. 3. [Enter Toto through doorway. He is also full of wonder. Dorothy has not looked at him yet.] TOTO_SL You ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie. DOROTHY_SL (spins around, surprised) Toto! You can talk! And you’re huge! TOTO_SL Whoa! Look at me! And you understand me! DOROTHY_SL And you understand me! TOTO_SL Well, I could always understand you. Isn’t that funny? Animals understand people, but people don’t understand animals. It just goes to show, you people aren’t as highly evolved as you think you are. In fact, now that you understand me, there’s a few things I’ve been wanting to point out... DOROTHY_SL Toto... Toto... Toto! Now’s not the time. [While Toto was talking - and Dorothy was trying to get his attention - the Munchkins had been emerging from various spots.] BOQ_SL Are you a good witch or a bad witch? CINNAMON I don’t think she’s any kind of witch. PUMPKIN She has to be some kind of witch, Cinnamon. JELLY Pumpkin’s right. Only a witch can kill a witch. BOQ Which brings us back to our first question: COCO Are you a good witch or a bad witch? 4. DOROTHY_SL But I haven’t killed any witch. BOQ_SL You sure did. You dropped a house on her head. DIP You can see her legs right there. DOROTHY_SL Oh, dear! How terrible! JELLY Terrible? Coco! She’s a bad witch! DOROTHY_SL No! HONEY Then you’re a good witch? [Enter Glinda and Fería. All the Munchkins murmur in awe.] GLINDA_SL Hello, dear friends. I believe we can clarify this matter. [Munchkins all step aside. Glinda glides up to Dorothy. Pause.] GLINDA_SL Are you a good witch or a bad witch? FERÍA_SL That helped a lot, Glinda. Thank you. [Toto marches in front of Dorothy.] TOTO_SL Listen! She’s not any kind of witch. Witches are old and ugly and gross. GLINDA_SL I’m a witch. 5. TOTO_SL (beat) Sometimes it’s nice not being understood. (ducks behind Dorothy) FERÍA_SL I’m Fería, the Good Witch of the North. She is Glinda. Good Witch of the South. (pointing to legs) That was the Bad Witch of the East. GLINDA_SL Now then... are you a good witch or a bad witch? DOROTHY_SL ...Good? [All the Munchkins cheer.] MUNCHKINS She’s a good witch! She killed the bad witch! (sing) Ding-dong the witch is dead! Which ol’ witch? The wicked Witch! Ding-dong the wicked witch is dead! [Lightning and Thunder rip across stage. The Munchkins scatter.] TOTO_SL What was that? FERÍA_SL It’s the Wicked Witch! She’s coming. TOTO_SL I thought Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch. BOQ_SL She killed the Witch of the East! CINNAMON That’s the Wicked Witch of the West! JELLY You’d better hurry. Here. Take these shoes! 6. PUMPKIN The ruby slippers. Jelly, you’re a genius. FERÍA_SL (to Dorothy) My friend, don’t take those shoes off. COCO They have incredible magic! DIP The shoes will prospect you, Dorothy. CINNAMON You mean ‘protect’, Dip. [Dip nods happily. Another strike of lightning and thunder makes all cower.] DOROTHY_SL But where should I go? How can I get home? FERÍA_SL You’ll have to seek the Wizard. TOTO_SL But how do we get there? GLINDA_SL You must follow the Yellow Brick Road. (points over audience) See it there? DOROTHY_SL It stretches ever so far. Could someone keep us company? PUMPKIN You mean... leave Munchkinland? FERÍA_SL Excellent idea. (to the Munchkins) Dorothy needs someone to guide her. Any munchkin that wishes to volunteer, please step forward. [All Munchkins, except Boq, step back.] 7. GLINDA_SL Boq! That’s very kind of you. BOQ_SL What? (realizes what happened) Listen, I’d love to help her. Really! But there’s a problem. GLINDA_SL Which is? BOQ_SL I don’t want to. GLINDA_SL But you are perfect, Boq. You’ve been to the Emerald City. BOQ_SL Only once — by accident. (eyeing another Munchkin) Someone thought it would be funny to tie me to a Wandering Chicken. [Toto opens mouth to ask “How” a chicken could pull him all the way to a distant city.] BOQ_SL (holding up finger to Toto) Don’t ask. [Toto closes mouth.] FERÍA_SL Boq, you will lead Dorothy to the Emerald City - or I will turn you into a chicken. BOQ_SL (eyes grow wide then, to Dorothy, pleasant but nervous) When do we leave? COCO Don’t worry, Boq. It’s not that dangerous. DIP Oh, sure it is, Coco. The witch’s servants are everywhere. 8. FERÍA_SL What Coco was trying to say, was that Boq will make it through okay. JELLY Right. He’s not going to get gobbled up. CINNAMON Or trampled on. DIP Or torn into little pieces. BOQ_SL You can all stop comforting me now. GLINDA_SL Off you go! MUNCHKINS Follow the yellow brick road! Ha-ha! Follow the yellow brick road! Hee-hee! Follow, follow, follow, follow, Follow the yellow brick road! Oh! Toto and Boq are also in the shadows.] 9. WIZARD And now you see me. Come forward, dog. You too, Munchkin. Why do you hide? TOTO_PP I... I wasn’t hiding. BOQ_PP I was. And he left a puddle in the corner. TOTO_PP What?! I didn’t! BOQ_PP You most certainly did. TOTO_PP (through clenched teeth) The big talking head startled me. WIZARD Silence! So, Dorothy Gale, you came without meeting the West Witch? DOROTHY_PP Oh, but I did meet the witch. She caught me on the road. WIZARD Were you not scared? BOQ_PP Scared? BOQ_CS I was being dragged behind a chicken. You might as well ask that scarecrow. SCARECROW_CS That way seems nice. TOTO_CS Did that Scarecrow talk? DOROTHY_CS Don’t be silly. Scarecrows don’t talk. SCARECROW_CS They don’t? I’m sorry. DOROTHY_CS Oh! You do talk! Do you know the way to the Emerald City? [Scarecrow nods.] TOTO_CS Can you tell us? [Scarecrow shakes head.] DOROTHY_CS Why not? 11. SCARECROW_CS (whispers) Scarecrows don’t talk. TOTO_CS Well, clearly, you do. SCARECROW_CS I do? Are you sure? BOQ_CS Is there a brain in that straw head of yours? SCARECROW_CS I don’t think so.
