Uh-oh, it looks like your Internet Explorer is out of date. Highly recommended for anyone that likes the JLA characters or just good comics. The New Gods decision to send in Orion and Barda changes the landscape of the league. Feb 11, Hannah Givens rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novel , superhero. Nov 28, Martin rated it liked it Shelves: used-to-own , reviewed. Aug 10, Juan Jose added it. Gardner Fox. Open Preview See a Problem? When relaunched by writer Grant Morrison , the team again focused on the most recognizable, powerful, and long-lasting heroes in DC's library. There are two major story lines in the book, both which are surrounded by smaller one shot issues. Prometheus is sort of an evil Batman archetype who beats up on the JLA with a variety of tactical and technical trickery. Graphic Novels Comics. Jun 16, Aaron rated it really liked it. Grant Morrison. The exploits of the secret society of anarchists continue. Start your review of JLA, Vol. Relies too much on the individual stories of the heroes in their own comics, so without that context it didn't stand well on its own and ended up being boring. Again, I'm a big fan. Clean, consistent, full — probably the best JLA art yet! His motive is hardly a motive. Orion's temper and Barda's temperament makes for a teeming sort of a compositional side of the team. The last however redeems it by crossing over with Sandman and having a Starro like entity attack a child in I thought this collection of stories from the JLA was spotty at best. We get to view the relationships between each member and we get to see major repercussions as they deal with the elephant in the room which is: can they ever trust Batman again? I really enjoyed this because the two story lines really run the gamut of what kind of stories can be told with this type of team. Jan 26, Relstuart rated it liked it Shelves: super- hero. Although the ending was solid, it also felt very lazy. Jun 08, Liam Martin rated it it was amazing. He is also active in screenwriting. Nov 08, sixthreezy rated it liked it Shelves: dc , justice-league. Refresh and try again. But it was fun. Also: The International Ultramarine Corps, a super- team from around the globe, is attacked by the hyperintelligent, evil Gorilla Grodd and his guerilla gorilla militia. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Frank Quitely Illustrator. This story felt the most like Morrison's usual work, without being too forced. The main defensive teams of the JLA, JSA, Teen Titans and Outsiders already being occupied elsewhere by the Crisis, it fell on the Oracle and the Martian Manhunter to contact and deputize seemingly every active or once active hero in the DC Universe as Justice League members, effective immediately, to form a last line of defense for the city. Batman, Superman, X-Men—this comic book writer works with the greats. Jan 22, TJ Shelby rated it really liked it Shelves: dc. JLA: Volume 4 Writer He went down too easily and felt like your typical villain of the week. Jun 08, Liam Martin rated it it was amazing. Since this new League included most of DC's most powerful heroes, the focus of the stories changed. He just rambles on for a tad too long. Overall, the whole Prometheus arc is pretty good. Enemies faced by this new JLA included an invading army of aliens, a malfunctioning war machine from the future, a horde of renegade angels, a newly reformed coalition of villains as a counter-league, mercenaries armed with individualized take-down strategies for each superhero, various cosmic threats, and the enraged spirit of the Earth itself. Well, this storyline gives us an idea of how this might play out. Which Morrison has done a few times before with other stories, but it never seems to be hashed out or predictable. Morrison follows this with the story of antagonist Prometheus, who has put together a plan to kill the entire Justice League. Interview with Grant Morrison. This is a dense volume, but with a great payoff. JLA, Vol. Ryan rated it liked it May 06, Want to Read saving…. Justice League vol. Mark Waid ,. It plays to his strengths. Jan 26, Relstuart rated it liked it Shelves: super-hero. I loved it. Gardner Fox. Not to say that Mark Waid is a bad writer, he does an excellent Justice League story. This one touched enough on Morrison's usual themes and used superhero action enough to make it enjoyable for me. This book is filled with awesome stuff everywhere. The threat is so dire that heaven began planning for the new universe with imminent destruction of the current one. More of a inter-personal, grounded story, it deals with the Batman villain, Ras al Ghul stealing Batman's secret plans for each JLA member detailing how to incapacitate them in case they ever go rogue or are taken over. Enlarge cover. Nov 28, Martin rated it liked it Shelves: used-to-own , reviewed. I liked the interactions between the Sandman and the JLA. This collection includes the groundbreaking stories This volume takes a drop in quality from previous editions, mainly because half of this trade is written by guest writers. Readers also enjoyed. More Details A literally stellar ending to one the best superteam comics I've ever read. I was not too fussed on the issues written by the authors other than Morrison and Waid. We have cultures like that right now. Highly recommended for anyone that likes the JLA characters or just good comics. The Prometheus arc in this book I had already read courtesy of the Deluxe JLA Volume two, but still an excellent read even on this slightly lower quality papers. That's what I think makes it so impactful that way all the puzzle parts come together. While enjoyable, as I always think Morrison's stuff is, this one did less to wow me as much as something like "Doom Patrol", and it doesn't even hold a candle to "The Invisibles" both previous works by Morrison. JLA: Volume 4 Reviews Developments from a hero's own title such as the new costume and electric-based powers temporarily adopted by Superman in — were reflected in the League's comic book, however. All we know is that the JLA have their work cut out for them. Recalling some of his feats include moving the moon by himself and wrestling with an angel, every feat is epic. The second is about a scientist who changes the power of probability. Other Popular Editions of the Same Title. A sentient doomsday engine of the Old Gods. This is a dense volume, but with a great payoff. Sort order. Hardcover , pages. But nothing is I don't have issues on paper and now I read them for the first time. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Joined by such new allies as Plastic Man, Steel, Zauriel, the Huntress, and Oracle, a truly almighty team comprised of super heroes, aliens, gods, and monarchs prepare for battle against any and all threats. Mar 28, B rated it liked it Shelves: borrowed. Highly recommended. The League now dealt only with Earth-shattering, highest-priority threats which could challenge their tremendous combined power. JLA: Volume 4 Read Online It sees the introduction of Prometheus, and his dealings with the JLA. I liked the interactions between the Sandman and the JLA. No trivia or quizzes yet. The whole series reads like a nonstop blockbuster movie. The last 3 issue arc is only good, instead of brilliant, but doesn't detract from the book as a whole. • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

  • Nature of Elliot Goldenthal's Music
The Nature of Elliot Goldenthal’s Music & A Focus on Alien 3 (& other scores) There is “something different” about Elliot Goldenthal’s music. There is also considerable brain and brawn in Elliot Goldenthal’s film music. His style is difficult to label because his approach is so eclectic depending on the project. Sometimes I feel he is fundamentally an independent art-house composer (perhaps Frida, say, and The Good Thief) although he can demonstrate thrilling orchestral power in scores such as Sphere and the Batman movies that I personally quite enjoyed. Overall he shows a Late Modernist temperament, musically an American Bohemian, but nevertheless grounded somewhat in the mainstream traditions (certainly at least traditional notation). His polystylism (eclectism) is a postmodern characteristic. An excellent example of polystylism is his score for Titus (and Good Thief to a lesser extent, and even an example or two in Alien 3) with the diverse or even odd juxtaposition of genres (symphonic-classical, rock, etc.) that represents in one score the type of projects he collectively undertook over the last fifteen years or so. There is not one clear-cut musical voice, in other words, but a mixture or fusion of different styles. It is, in part, his method of organization. Loosely speaking, his music is avant-garde but certainly not radically so--as in the case of John Cage with his aleatoric (random) music and quite non-traditional notation (although Goldenthal’s music can at select times be aleatoric in effect when he utilizes electronic music, quarter-toning, and other devices). He is experimental and freewheeling but certainly this tendency is not overblown and expanded into the infinite! He definitely takes advantage of what technology has to offer (MIDI applications, timbre sampling, synthesizer usage, etc.) but does not discard what traditions are useful for him to express his vision of musical art.

A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations.

The comics medium is a very specialized area of the Arts, home to many rare and talented blooms and flowering imaginations and it breaks my heart to see so many of our best and brightest bowing down to the same market pressures which drive lowest-common-denominator blockbuster movies and television cop shows. Let's see if we can call time on this trend by demanding and creating big, wild comics which stretch our imaginations. Let's make living breathing, sprawling adventures filled with mind-blowing images of things unseen on Earth. Let's make artefacts that are not faux-games or movies but something other, something so rare and strange it might as well be a window into another universe because that's what it is.
