JOS-075-1-2018-007 Child Prodigy
From the Bel Canto Stage to Reality TV: A Musicological View of Opera’s Child Prodigy Problem Peter Mondelli very few months, a young singer, usually a young woman, takes the stage in front of network TV cameras and sings. Sometimes she sings Puccini, sometimes Rossini, rarely Verdi or Wagner. She receives praise from some well meaning but uninformed adult Ejudge, and then the social media frenzy begins. Aunts and uncles start sharing videos, leaving comments about how talented this young woman is. A torrent of blog posts and articles follow shortly thereafter. The most optimistic say that we in the opera world should use this publicity as a means to an end, to show the world at large what real opera is—without ever explaining how. Peter Mondelli The sentiment that seems to prevail, though, is that this performance does not count. This is not real opera. Opera was never meant to be sung by such a voice, at such an age, and under such conditions. Two years ago, Laura Bretan’s performance of Puccini’s “Nessun dorma” on America’s Got Talent evoked the usual responses.1 Claudia Friedlander responded admirably, explaining that there are basic physiological facts that keep operatic child prodigies at a distance from vocally mature singers.2 More common, however, are poorly researched posts like the one on the “Prosporo” blog run by The Economist.3 Dubious claims abound—Jenny Lind, for exam- ple, hardly retired from singing as the post claims at age twenty-nine, the year before P. T. Barnum invited her to tour North America. -

Quan Els Bojos Canten
Quan els bojos canten is the result of an investigation inspired on the reason why the crazy arias are the way they are. The project shows the evolution of the insane within society and culture and finally gets to the image of madness in opera. -

Bartolomeo Merelli Librettist/Impresario Extraordinary Alexander Weatherson
The elusive Bartolomeo Merelli Librettist/impresario extraordinary Alexander Weatherson Enrico di Borgogna! Le nozze in villa! I piccioli virtuosi ambulanti! What do we have here but a come-back for this fellow classmate of Gaetano Donizetti, this loyal Bergamasc painfully discounted but now at the cutting edge of modern rediscovery - an ingenious pupil of Mayr destined to become one of the master movers of the age whose frayed reputation (discarded by Donizetti and repudiated by Verdi) swept him under the carpet. Now may be the time such a dismissed protagonist, such an all-powerful magus of La Scala1 and far-from negligible scribbler of libretti can be permitted a virtue or two… Schmidl2 seems to be the only authority who finds truly heartfelt words of praise for this operatic black hole: “ uno dei più illuminati e potenti impresari, che aveva saputo destare tante vive emozioni coi suoi superbi spettacoli nei 1 He was Impresario from the autumn of 1836 to 30 November 1850, and again from 1 August 1861 to the beginning of 1863. Verdi’s contest with Merelli - accused of having gone behind his back with Verdi’s publishing rights - was the reason for the latter’s absence from La Scala for thirty-six years but without Merelli he would never have been there in the first place 2 Carlo Schmidl Dizionario Universale dei Musicisti Vol.2 (Milan 1929) 89 maggiori pubblici d’Europa.” And it is a fact that so many of our oversold supermarket brands date from his stint at La Scala. The endearing text of I piccioli virtuosi ambulanti could well be the best witness to his finest qualities - to his sympathy for his native city and empathy for the musical culture of which he was a part. -
Donizetti's "Pazzi" Revived at Barga
Donizetti's "Pazzi" revived at Barga I pdzzi per progetto was never intended to be a serious piece of work, and Donizetti, one imagines, would be quite surpnsed to find it being performed over 150 years after hrs death. The opera was written in the winter of 1829-30 as part of a benefit evening for the composer while Donizeth, under conhact to Domenico Barbaja, was awaiting the premidre of It dituvio universale at the Teatro San Carlo. The librettist - Domenico Gilardoni - was the same as for Il diluvio and most of the imposing cast were ttre same too - Luigia Boccabadati for the principal role of Norina, Maria Carraro, mezzo-soprano as the seconda donna, and the great bass Luigi Lablache as Darlemont. The slight story can be traced to a comedy from the Scribe factory called Une visite d Bedlam. It takes place in a hmatic asylum in Paris run by Norina's uncle Darlemont, and concems a Colonel Blinval, who is married to Norina, but loved by Cristina. Norina and Blinval, who is something of a rake, have not seen each other in some years, and he has assured Cristina that he will marry her when Norina, whom he claims to be sick, dies. To make it b ef, these characters and several others show up at the asylum and pretend to be mad - +he 'pazzit per progetto' or 'crazies by design'. The opera ends with the happy reconciliation between Norina, who is very much alive, and her husband, Blinval. It is all quite contrNing and mostly the basis forjokes on the insane, or on people pretending to be insane.
