The Al Grey All-Stars with Jimmy Rushing will give the fourth Jazz in the
Garden concert at the Museum of Modern Art on Thursday, July 12, at 8:30
p.m. Al Grey, on trombone, will be joined by Drexler Gordon and Wild Bill
Moore, tenor saxaphones, Calvin Newborn, guitar, Jo Jones, drums, Eddie
Jones, bass, Reunald Jones, trumpet, and Gene Kee, piano. Jimmy Rushing
will be featured as vocalist.
Admission to the Museum is $1.00; members free. The jazz concert is
an additional 50 cents. In case of rain, the concert will be cancelled;
tickets will be honored at the concert following. Other Museum activities
continue as announced until the 10 p.m. closing. Dinner and refreshments
are available in the Penthouse restaurant.
After playing with such figures as Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie
(1956-57), end Count Basie (I957-6I), Grey formed the Al Grey-Billy Mitchell
Sextet which recently won the International Jazz Critics Poll as the best
new group in jazz. The seven other veterans of the All-Stars have each
played with a number of name bands including Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles,
Billy Eckstine, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, and Joe Newman.
Jimmy Rushing, who gained an international reputation after joining
Count Basie in 1935, formed his own septet in I95O and has worked singly
since 1952. He is considered one of the greatest blues singers in the
history of jazz.
Jazz in the Garden is presented in cooperation with the United Nations Jazz
Society, The concert will continue on July 19 with Jerome Richardson and
the Les Spann Quintet and on July 26 with Al Cohn and the Zoot Sims Quintet.
The 1958 film, Bringing Up Baby, with Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn,
Charlie Ruggles, and Barry Fitzgerald, will be shown in the Museum auditorium
at 8 p.m.
