  • Duke Ellington Kyle Etges Signature Recordings Cottontail
Duke Ellington Kyle Etges Signature Recordings Cottontail. Cottontail stands as a fine example of Ellington’s “Blanton-Webster” years, where the band was at its peak in performance and popularity. The “Blanton-Webster” moniker refers to bassist Jimmy Blanton and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, who recorded Cottontail on May 4th, 1940 alongside Johnny Hodges, Barney Bigard, Chauncey Haughton, and Harry Carney on saxophone; Cootie Williams, Wallace Jones, and Ray Nance on trumpet; Rex Stewart on cornet; Juan Tizol, Joe Nanton, and Lawrence Brown on trombone; Fred Guy on guitar, Duke on piano, and Sonny Greer on drums. John Hasse, author of The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington, states that Cottontail “opened a window on the future, predicting elements to come in jazz.” Indeed, Jimmy Blanton’s driving quarter-note feel throughout the piece predicts a collective gravitation away from the traditional two feel amongst modern bassists. Webster’s solo on this record is so iconic that audiences would insist on note-for-note renditions of it in live performances. Even now, it stands as a testament to Webster’s mastery of expression, predicting techniques and patterns that John Coltrane would use decades later. Ellington also shows off his Harlem stride credentials in a quick solo before going into an orchestrated sax soli, one of the first of its kind. After a blaring shout chorus, the piece recalls the A section before Harry Carney caps everything off with the droning tonic. Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue. This piece is remarkable for two reasons: Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue exemplifies Duke’s classical influence, and his desire to write more grandiose pieces with more extended forms.

  • Transcribing Al Grey: a Legacy Defined by Thirteen Improvisations
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ASU Digital Repository Transcribing Al Grey: A Legacy Defined by Thirteen Improvisations by Charles E Hopkins III A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Approved November 2011 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: J. Samuel Pilafian, Chair Michael Kocour Sandra Stauffer John Ericson Ted Solis ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2011 ©2011 Charles E Hopkins III All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The study of artist transcriptions is an effective vehicle for assimilating the language and style of jazz. Pairing transcriptions with historical context provides further insight into the back story of the artists‘ life and method. Innovators are often the subject of published studies of this kind, but transcriptions of plunger- mute master Al Grey have been overlooked. This document fills that void, combining historical context with thirteen transcriptions of Grey‘s trombone features and improvisations. Selection of transcribed materials was based on an examination of historically significant solos in Al Grey‘s fifty-five-year career. The results are a series of open-horn and plunger solos that showcase Grey‘s sound, technical brilliance, and wide range of dynamics and articulation. This collection includes performances from a mix of widely available and obscure recordings, the majority coming from engagements with the Count Basie Orchestra. Methods learned from the study of Al Grey‘s book Plunger Techniques were vital in the realization of his work. The digital transcription software Amazing Slow Downer by Roni Music aided in deciphering some of Grey‘s more complicated passages and, with octave displacement, helped bring previously inaudible moments to the foreground.

1 The TENORSAX of GEORGE HOLMES TATE “BUDDY” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Jan. 4, 2020 2 Born: Sherman, Texas, Feb. 22, 1914 Died: Chandler, Arizona, Feb. 10, 2001 Introduction: We became familiar with Buddy Tate very early through his recordings with Count Basie. I met him once, many years ago, at the Molde International Jazz Festival. He was a very kind man, and when he realized I was doing some useful work on ja zz tenor saxophone, he invited me to his hotel room for whisky. We had a very nice time together in the light summer night of Norway! Early history: His brother, a saxophonist, gave Buddy an alto in 1925. Two years later began gigging with McCloud's Night Owls (led by his cousin, trumpeter Roy McCloud). In 1929 played for several months in Wichita Falls with the St. Louis Merrymakers, later that year joined Troy Floyd's Band in San Antonio. Briefly with Gene Coy's Band, then with Terrence Holder's 12 Clouds of Joy from 1930-33. Worked with E. J. Malone and his Rhythm Kings (early 1933), Wesley Smiths' Band, ‘Tan Town Topics’, and Ethel May's Band before joining Count Basie in Little Rock, Arkansas (ca. July 1934). From late 1934 until early summer 1935 with Andy Kirk, played with band at Wiley College, Texas, then long spell with Nat Towles until joining Count Basie in spring 1939. Remained with Basie until September 1948, brief return in early 1949, then for the rest of that year worked mostly with Hot Lips Page, occasionally with Lucky Millinder.

Blindfold Test BY GARY FUKUSHIMA AMANDA GENTILE Ryan Keberle rombonist Ryan Keberle has cultivated one of the more diverse Tcareers in modern jazz. A fixture of the Grammy-winning Maria Schneider Orchestra, he leads the genre-busting ensemble Catharsis, and in 2018, Reverso—his band with pianist Frank Woeste—released Suite Ravel, inspired by the classical masterpiece Le Tombeau De Couperin. Earlier this year, a trio version of Reverso released The Melodic Line. DownBeat met with Keberle via videoconference, as he commented on tracks from his home in New York’s Catskill Mountains. Al Grey and the Basie Wing Ryan Keberle “Open Wider, Please” (The Last Of The Big Plungers, Argo, 1960) Grey, Benny Powell, trombones; Joe Newman, trumpet; Billy Mitchell, tenor saxophone; Charlie Fowlkes, really pushing the trombone to new places, especially from a technical baritone saxophone; Floyd Morris, piano; Ed Jones, bass; Sonny Payne, drums. standpoint, just doing things on the instrument that no one thought was I love this track so much. 1 The TENORSAX of FRANK WELLINGTON WESS Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Sept. 9, 2020 2 Born: Kansas City, Missouri, Jan. 4, 1922 Died: Oct. 30, 2013 Introduction: Oslo Jazz Circle always loved the Basie orchestra, no matter what time, and of course we became familiar with Frank Wess’ fine tenorsax playing. My own real ear opener however was the Joe Turner session on Atlantic from 1956. Early history: First instrument altosax which he played in local band in Oklahoma. On tenor in Washington with Bill Baldwin and in the house band at Howard Theatre. On tour with Blanche Calloway and army service 1941-44. After discharge, with Billy Eckstine. Then with Eddie Heywood and Lucky Millinder. One year with Bull Moose Jackson. Back to Washington and studies on flute 1949. From June 1953 to August 1964 he was a member of Count Basie’s orchestra. Message: I have had to simplify the presentation of Count Basie sessions, it seemed to serve no purpose of going through all Chris Sheridan. However this means that many sessions with FW must have been omitted, and it is not unlikely that some of these will or have already appeared on CD. Also,I admit that it is not always easy to hear the difference between Frank Wess and Frank Foster, at least for my modest ears. Thus please report any discrepancies between your and my opinions without delay! 3 FRANK WESS TENORSAX SOLOGRAPHY BILLY ECKSTINE ORCHESTRA NYC.
