Think of all the great jazz stories that have been conveyed through photographs: Dexter Gordon wreathed in a cloud of smoke at the Royal Roost, as captured by Herman Leonard; John Coltrane, deep in thought, worrying his lip on the cover of Blue Train, as immortalized by Francis Wolff; and, of course, the his- toric summit known as A Great Day in Harlem, wherein Art Kane pho- tographed an amazing array of jazz titans, including Sonny Rollins and Benny Golson. For our cover story on Wadada Leo Smith (“National Treasure,” page 30), journalist Phillip Lutz explores the trumpeter’s thrilling quest to transform the landscapes of the natural world into sound—a feat he accomplishes admirably on a new album, America’s National Parks. The feature is illustrated by a series of illuminating portraits by longtime DownBeat contributor Jimmy Katz. Our cover shot—depicting a pensive Smith—seems to nod to a famous photo of Miles Davis, whose steely fin- ger-to-the-lips gaze was eternalized by Jeff Sedlik. During Katz’s photo session with Smith, the trumpeter did the gesture spontaneously, with- out any prompting. The resulting image is magical. The portrait of a luminous Smith on pages 30–31 was taken at the Louis Armstrong House Museum in Corona, New York. As a joyous Smith sits at Satchmo’s desk, there’s a framed photo nearby. It depicts Armstrong in 1970 entertaining a group of youngsters on the house’s stoop. On page 32, you’ll see a transcendent shot in which Katz and Smith create a wonderful homage to that image. Both the visual and musical aspects of jazz serve the same purpose: to preserve the music so that future generations can move it forward. That’s clearly one of the goals of the Louis Armstrong House Museum, which will present a gala on Nov. 9 at New York’s magnificent Capitale (130 Bowery). The evening will include cocktails, dinner, an awards cere- mony and a special performance by the Catherine Russell Septet. Like almost everything else associated with Armstrong, it’s guaran- teed to be picturesque.     Duke Ellington Kyle Etges Signature Recordings Cottontail. Cottontail stands as a fine example of Ellington’s “Blanton-Webster” years, where the ​ band was at its peak in performance and popularity. The “Blanton-Webster” moniker refers to bassist Jimmy Blanton and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, who recorded Cottontail on May 4th, 1940 alongside Johnny Hodges, Barney Bigard, Chauncey Haughton, and Harry Carney on saxophone; Cootie Williams, Wallace Jones, and Ray Nance on trumpet; Rex Stewart on cornet; Juan Tizol, Joe Nanton, and Lawrence Brown on trombone; Fred Guy on guitar, Duke on piano, and Sonny Greer on drums. John Hasse, author of The Life and Genius of Duke ​ Ellington, states that Cottontail “opened a window on the future, predicting elements to come in ​ jazz.” Indeed, Jimmy Blanton’s driving quarter-note feel throughout the piece predicts a collective gravitation away from the traditional two feel amongst modern bassists. Webster’s solo on this record is so iconic that audiences would insist on note-for-note renditions of it in live performances. Even now, it stands as a testament to Webster’s mastery of expression, predicting techniques and patterns that John Coltrane would use decades later. Ellington also shows off his Harlem stride credentials in a quick solo before going into an orchestrated sax soli, one of the first of its kind. After a blaring shout chorus, the piece recalls the A section before Harry Carney caps everything off with the droning tonic. Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue. This piece is remarkable for two reasons: Diminuendo & ​ ​ Crescendo in Blue exemplifies Duke’s classical influence, and his desire to write more ​ grandiose pieces with more extended forms.

    1 Chapter Seven Cold Commodities: Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World Haftor Medbøe Since gaining prominence in public consciousness as a distinct genre in early 20th Century USA, jazz has become a music of global reach (Atkins, 2003). Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp.

    George ROBERT Born on September 15, 1960 in Chambésy (Geneva), Switzerland, George Robert is internationally reCognized as one of the leading alto saxophonists in jazz today. He started piano at a very early age and at age 10 he began Clarinet lessons at the Geneva Conservatory with LuC Hoffmann. In 1980 he moved to Boston and studied alto saxophone with Joe Viola at the Berklee College of MusiC. In 1984 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Composition & Arranging and moved to New York where he enrolled at the Manhattan SChool of MusiC. He studied with Bob Mintzer and earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz PerformanCe in 1987. He played lead alto in the Manhattan SChool of MusiC Big Band for 2 years, whiCh earned in 1985 the 1st Prize in the College Big Band Category in the Down Beat Magazine Jazz Awards In July 1984 he performed on the main stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival and earned an Outstanding PerformanCe Award from Down Beat Magazine. In 1985 & 1986 he toured Europe extensively. In 1987 he met Tom Harrell and together they founded the George Robert-Tom Harrell Quintet (with Dado Moroni, Reggie Johnson & Bill Goodwin). The group Completed 125 ConCerts worldwide between 1987 & 1992, and reCorded 5 albums. He remained in New York City and free-lanCed for 7 years, playing with Billy Hart, Buster Williams, the Lionel Hampton Big Band, the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Jazz OrChestra, Joe Lovano, and many others.     Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts--A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar--have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique. On their latest full-length effort, IV (due out via Innovative Leisure on July 8th), BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before. The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender," a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grand swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love," upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth").

Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
