    Duke Ellington Kyle Etges Signature Recordings Cottontail. Cottontail stands as a fine example of Ellington’s “Blanton-Webster” years, where the ​ band was at its peak in performance and popularity. The “Blanton-Webster” moniker refers to bassist Jimmy Blanton and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, who recorded Cottontail on May 4th, 1940 alongside Johnny Hodges, Barney Bigard, Chauncey Haughton, and Harry Carney on saxophone; Cootie Williams, Wallace Jones, and Ray Nance on trumpet; Rex Stewart on cornet; Juan Tizol, Joe Nanton, and Lawrence Brown on trombone; Fred Guy on guitar, Duke on piano, and Sonny Greer on drums. John Hasse, author of The Life and Genius of Duke ​ Ellington, states that Cottontail “opened a window on the future, predicting elements to come in ​ jazz.” Indeed, Jimmy Blanton’s driving quarter-note feel throughout the piece predicts a collective gravitation away from the traditional two feel amongst modern bassists. Webster’s solo on this record is so iconic that audiences would insist on note-for-note renditions of it in live performances. Even now, it stands as a testament to Webster’s mastery of expression, predicting techniques and patterns that John Coltrane would use decades later. Ellington also shows off his Harlem stride credentials in a quick solo before going into an orchestrated sax soli, one of the first of its kind. After a blaring shout chorus, the piece recalls the A section before Harry Carney caps everything off with the droning tonic. Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue. This piece is remarkable for two reasons: Diminuendo & ​ ​ Crescendo in Blue exemplifies Duke’s classical influence, and his desire to write more ​ grandiose pieces with more extended forms.

Thank you for allowing us to show what we do and how we do it. Our program works for our situation in Winfield and we hope portions of it will work for your program. Let’s start with a song and then we will time warp into year one of our program. SONG – Prelude in E minor YEAR 1 – All those instruments The Winfield Band program, my philosophy has been that rhythm is the key to success. I tell all band students “You can learn the notes and fingerings fine, but without good rhythm, no one will understand what you are playing.” This is also true in folkloric music. Faster does not mean you are a better player. How well you communicate musically establishes your level of proficiency. Our first lessons with all band students are clapping exercises I design and lessons from the Goldenberg Percussion method book. Without the impedance of embouchure, fingerings and the thought of dropping a $500 instrument on the floor, the student becomes completely focused on rhythmic study. For the first percussion lesson, the focus is also rhythmic. Without the need for lips, we play hand percussion immediately. For the first Western rudiment, we play paradiddles on conga drums or bongos (PLAY HERE). All percussion students must say paradiddle while they play it.

Little's untimely death, and still yet extensive recording career,1 presents yet another example of early passing among innovative and influential trumpeters. Like Clifford Brown before him, Theodore “Fats” Navarro before him, Little's death left a gap the in jazz world as both a sophisticated technician and an inspiring composer. However, unlike his predecessors Little is hardly – if ever – mentioned in jazz texts and classrooms. His influence is all but non-existent except to those who have researched his work. More than likely he is the victim of too early a death: Brown passed away at twenty-five and Navarro, twenty-six. Bob Cranshaw, who is present on Little's first recording,2 remarks, “Nobody got a chance to really experience [him]...very few remember him because nobody got a chance to really hear him or see him.”3 Given this, and his later work with more avant-garde and dissonant harmonic/melodic structure as a writing partner with Eric Dolphy, it is no wonder that his remembered career has followed more the path of James P.

    Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues. TBW: How long have you been here, in this location? BP: Over forty years. Or more, actually. This is such a nice location. I’ve lived in other places—I was in California for about ten years, but I’ve always kept this place because it’s so centrally located. Of course, when I was doing Broadway, it was great, because I can practically stumble from my house to Broadway, and a lot of times it came in handy when there were snow storms and things, when other musicians had to come in from Long Island or New Jersey, and I could be on call. It really worked very well for me in those days. TBW: You played Broadway for many years, is that right? BP: Yeah. TBW: Starting when? BP: I left Count Basie in 1963, and I started doing Broadway about 1964. TBW: At that time Broadway was not, nor is it now, particularly integrated. I think you and Joe Wilder were among the first to integrate Broadway. BP: It’s funny how it’s turned around. When I began in the early 1960s, there were very few black musicians on Broadway, then in about 1970, when I went to California, it was beginning to get more integrated.

Nel leggendario studio di Rudy Van Gelder, niente altro che il salotto della sua abitazione ad Hackensack, New Jersey, il 22 giugno di quell’anno il produttore Bob Weinstock, creatore dell’etichetta discografica Prestige, organizzò una seduta di registrazione per il sassofonista Sonny Rollins e il suo quartetto. Il frutto del lavoro di quella giornata confluì nell’album “Saxophone Colossus”, opera che nei decenni a venire avrebbe cambiato la vita di molti sassofonisti più o meno in erba. L’eccezionale quartetto convocato per l’occasione era completato da Tommy Flanagan al pianoforte, Doug Watkins al contrabbasso e Max Roach alla batteria. Tra i brani registrati in quell’occasione, il più noto è sicuramente St. Thomas, passato alla storia come uno dei primi “calypso” registrati nell’ambito del jazz. La forma del brano, di sedici misure, è una sorta di AABC in miniatura, con sezioni di quattro misure.

Dizzy Gillespie, along with his colleagues Charlie Parker and Thelonious J Monk, are considered to be the “fathers” of the fast-and-furious style called bebop. Dizzy Gillespie was known for his soaring trumpet lines, his puffed cheeks and the tilted bell of his trumpet. He was loved by musicians and fans for his engaging personality and showmanship. Gillespie was inspired to play music by his father who was a bricklayer and part- time musician. Gillespie began playing the piano at the age of 4. He taught himself to play the trumpet by trial and error, with the help of a few friends at the age of 12. In 1935, Gillespie moved to Philadelphia with his mother, after the death of his father.
