Arthur Mitchell Ballet Pioneer

Arthur Mitchell, the first black ballet dancer to achieve international stardom and one of the most poplar dancers with the New York City Ballet, was born March 27,1934 in New York, NY. Raised in Harlem, he began his training at the city’s High School of Performing Arts. Receiving a full scholarship to continue his training at the School of American Ballet, he became the first African American male dancer to become a permanent member of the New York City Ballet. He was best known for his role as Puck from A Midsummer Night’s Dream—a role specifically designed for him by choreographer and director George Balanchine.

Mitchell, with instructor Karel Shook, founded the Dance Theater of Harlem in 1969. Determined to provide opportunities for children of his old neighborhood, the school made its debut in 1971 - making history as the first permanent black ballet company in America. 50 years later, the multi- cultural dance school instructs more than 300 students.
