R iley “B .B .” King has often been called the King o f the Blues, but given his wide-ranging and long-lasting influence, he might more accurately be described as the blues’ lifetime ambassador. He has brought the sound and the style across the U.S.A. and all the way to the U .S .S .R ., to Caesar’s I Palace and the Cook County Jail, to I the Newport Jazz Festival and the Fillmore East. He topped the rhythm and blues charts in the early Fifties, served as an 2inspiration to the blues-obsessed guitarists o f the Sixties and reached a mainstream audience, as well as the pop Top Twenty, with his elegant and soulful | ‘The Thrill Is Gone. ’ ’ The hard-working King, born and bred in Mississippi, moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1948 to make his living playing the blues. There he met Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller), who offered King a Job as a fill-in DJ on a local radio station where he worked. King thenfound a regular spot on WDIA, a black-operated station, where he became known as the Beale Street Blues Boy, B.B. for short; his show was soon expandedfromfifteen minutes to two hours. He began to perform at Memphis’s Palace Theater, where Rufus Thomas emceed the amateur show. In 1950, King cut his first sidesfor RPM Records, a subsidiary o f Modem; one song, “Three O’Clock Blues,” topped the R&B charts the following year. King repeated that success the next year with ‘ ‘You Know I Love Y ou.” In 1961, King left RPM for ABC-Paramount Records. -

PSCI 11 the Gospel According to U2 Winter Study 2008
PSCI 11 The Gospel According to U2 Winter Study 2008 Professor Darel E. Paul PSCI 11 Stetson g19 Griffin 6 597-2327 TWR 10am-noon [email protected] Office Hrs.: Mondays 2:00pm - 4:00pm and by appointment Course Description It has been said that U2 is the "world's greatest rock band" – but is it also (unknown to most) the world's greatest – and most unusual – Christian rock band? This course explores the theology, spirituality and politics of U2 expressed through the group's songs, stage performances and human right campaigns. We will travel from the band's origins in the Shalom Christian Fellowship in Dublin to their overtly Christian second album October (1981); the culmination of their superstardom in Joshua Tree (1987); through their techno and ultra-ironic 1990s marked by Zoo-TV, PopMart and Bono's "mock the devil" phase as Mr. MacPhisto; and a return to their roots in All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000) and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (2004). Along the way, we will listen to a lot of U2, watch some videos and tour footage – but it's not all fun and games. We will also read serious theological and philosophical tracts on U2 lyrics and explore the band's complicated interweaving of faith, sexuality, grace, fame, doubt, justice, and the meaning of America in a way which makes them a surprisingly popular and poignant spiritual voice in our superficial and materialistic age. We will also delve into the group's human rights and social justice work, from Band Aid in the ‘80s to (Product)RED today, and in particular explore Bono's Christian social justice moorings. -
B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center Education Curriculum 1 a Lifetime Collector
B.B. King: “I’m Just A Blues Singer” …and so much more! Come take a virtual trip through the life and times of this world-class bluesman. B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center Education Curriculum 1 A Lifetime Collector The contents of this presentation, drawn from multiple sources, simulate a visit to the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center, which opened in 2008 in B.B. King’s “hometown” of Indianola, Mississippi. Almost all of the items exhibited in the museum were shipped to Indianola from B. B. King’s Las Vegas home. By sharing these artifacts with museum visitors, he has given us a glimpse of himself and what it’s like to be the King of the Blues. 2 Tennessee Birthplace Arkansas Riley B. King was born on Wednesday, September 16, 1925, Mississippi in a cabin on the bank of Bear Creek in the tiny town of Berclair, Mississippi. This map shows other places he lived during his childhood and into his Louisiana teens: Kilmichael, Lexington, Indianola, and Memphis. 3 Sharecropper’s Home Riley’s parents, Albert and Nora Ella King, were sharecroppers who lived in a simple home southeast of Berclaire along Bear Creek. After his parents separated when he was four, King lived in Kilmichael and Lexington before moving as a teen to Indianola, which he refers to as his hometown. 4 Sharecropper’s Life Growing cotton began by breaking up the ground with hand tools like this hoe. Workers stooped over the cotton plants to fill their bags, which they dragged along behind them. -
