Dear Rancho Fans, Music Lovers and BBQ Aficionados
Dear Rancho fans, music lovers and BBQ aficionados, Let’s get ready to RAMBLE! Rancho Nicasio is alive and well and we hope all of you are too. We are entering our 15th season and we are as enthusiastic and grateful as year one. Our longtime staff is intact and ready to serve. Another mild winter helped support the troops. Everyone is looking forward to working outdoors in our beautiful valley. Here’s what we have lined up for our BBQ series 2013: THE BLUES BROADS with TRACY NELSON, DOROTHY MORRISON, ANNIE SAMPSON and ANGELA STREHLI will open the season on Sunday, May 26th. Their much acclaimed CD/DVD that was released last year has put them on the national map and we are very proud to have been able to give these women an opportunity to show their stuff. Your support helped make that possible. And for those of you who haven’t experienced this soulful “live” show, well, you really should. For that matter, I wouldn’t want to miss MARCIA BALL either. She will be here Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th. What you might want to do is come both days, that’s right, it’s all that good. And if you do, it will be my pleasure to buy you a beverage of your choice! What can I say, I really love all these women and I want you to come. ELVIN BISHOP will bring his rocking blues band for Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16th. No one has had more fun playing the blues than our dear friend. -

Music and the American Civil War
“LIBERTY’S GREAT AUXILIARY”: MUSIC AND THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR by CHRISTIAN MCWHIRTER A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2009 Copyright Christian McWhirter 2009 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Music was almost omnipresent during the American Civil War. Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans. -

Tim Buckley Il Navigatore Delle Stelle
Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away. -
Eric Clapton
Collection Highlights
COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS “LATINOS AND BASEBALL” COLLECTING INITIATIVE Latino baseball players have been interwoven in the fabric of Major League Baseball for years. They've been some of the greatest, well-known names in baseball history. To reflect and celebrate that rich history, the National Museum of American History (“NMAH”) in collaboration with the Smithsonian Latino Center, launched Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues. The multi-year community collecting initiative focuses on the historic role that baseball has played as a social and cultural force within Latino communities across the nation. The project launched a series of collecting events in late February in San Bernardino, California. A second event will be held in Los Angeles on July 17, 2016, and a third will be held in Syracuse, New York, on September 15, 2016. The events are designed to generate interest in the initiative, build on community relationships, record oral histories, and identify objects for possible acquisition by local historical associations as well as for the Smithsonian collections. The collaborative initiative seeks to document stories from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico and plans to collect a number of objects that could include baseball equipment; stadium signs; game memorabilia, such as handmade or mass-produced jerseys and tickets; food vendor signs; home movies; and period photographs. Curators will select objects based on the stories they represent and the insight they provide into the personal, community, and national narratives of the national pastime. “Baseball has played a major role in everyday American life since the 1800s, providing a means of celebrating both national and ethnic identities and building communities,” said John Gray, director of NMAH. -

Described as many things – philosopher, social satirist, even preacher – Hicks was ultimately a performer who, for many, changed what comedy could be. He believed that comedy played a vital role in any free and just society, and that the comedian, a free spirit detached from political or corporate agendas, was able to voice what others wouldn't, challenging convention and presenting ideas that would stimulate the minds of the audiences. Hicks had no difficulty making people laugh- but what he really wanted to do was make them think. His life tragically cut short at the age of 32, Hicks’ timeless material lives on, revered today by both comedians (many who cite him as an influence) and fans alike. -

Led by pacesetters such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Bobby Bare, artists in Nashville and Austin demanded the creative freedom to make their own country music, different from the pop-oriented sound that prevailed at the time. This exhibition also examines the cultures of Nashville and fiercely independent Austin, and the complicated, surprising relationships between the two. Artwork by Sam Yeates, Rising from the Ashes, Willie Takes Flight for Austin (2017) 3-6 Introduction 3 This interdisciplinary lesson guide allows classrooms to explore the exhibition Outlaws and Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s on view at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum® from May 25, 2018 – February 14, 2021. Students will examine the causes and effects of the Outlaw movement through analysis of art, music, video, and nonfiction texts. In doing so, students will gain an understanding of the culture of this movement; who and what influenced it; and how these changes diversified country music’s audience during this time.
