Greetings from the Board Chair and President

It is our pleasure to welcome you to our annual Americans for the Arts National Arts Awards. Tonight we again celebrate a select group of cultural leaders— groundbreaking artists, visionary philanthropists, and two outstanding nonprofit organizations—who help ensure that every American has access to the transformative power of the arts.

We gratefully acknowledge the contributions of all of our honorees. In this time of increasing challenges to our nation’s security and the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women and their families, we are especially pleased to recognize the American Legion Auxiliary, one of our many partners in the work we do with the military and veterans on the role of the arts & healing.

We also take this opportunity to recognize Maria Bell’s 10 years of tremendous service to this National Arts Awards event. Her leadership has been nothing short of extraordinary.

We are very glad that you are here with us tonight and we thank you for all that you continue to do to keep the arts alive across our nation. 4

The National Arts Awards Chair

Dear Friends of Americans for the Arts,

I’m once again delighted to add my personal message of welcome to all of you joining us tonight for the National Arts Awards.

Our surroundings are graced tonight by our featured artist, , whose work inspires me every day, literally, because I’m fortunate enough to have his images hanging in my office. His iconic portrait of President Obama during the 2008 election catapulted him, and his street art, to new heights. As his graphics brand OBEY GIANT celebrates its 25th year, I applaud the support he lends to so many causes and his consistent ability to blend image with message.

Richard Serra is to receive our Lifetime Achievement Award, and it’s hard to imagine a more worthy recipient. The size of his imagination is matched only by the size of his most prominent sculptures and installations. Even after more than five decades, he continues to move forward, and it is tremendously exciting to anticipate what he will come up with next.

6 Vicki and Roger Sant offer philanthropic leadership in several sectors, and tonight we honor them for their work in the arts. In our nation’s capital, they most notably provide both influence and funds to the , , the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Symphony Orchestra.

A new award is inaugurated tonight, the Legacy Award, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see it go to my colleague on the board of Americans for the Arts, Madeleine Berman, who has served our organization for 25 years. In her home state of , her arts policy work has been instrumental at both the local and state levels, and earned her appointments by two U.S. presidents to the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

As a board member of Americans for the Arts, over the past several years I’ve seen the profound impact of our work in promoting arts and healing, especially as our country deals with the injuries borne by those who have served. The American Legion Auxiliary has long understood the power of the arts in its work with veterans and military families, and we are honored to recognize its contributions.

The National Arts Awards Chair

The incredible dancer David Hallberg is this year’s recipient of the award named for my family’s foundation. Beyond his own considerable artistry, he so beautifully personifies how the arts can be used in cultural diplomacy via his pioneering work with the Bolshoi . He has toured the world and become one of the best ambassadors America can envisage.

Finally, the Outstanding Contributions to the Arts Award goes to an organization very near and dear to my heart, P.S. ARTS. As a resident of and as a past board chair of P.S. ARTS, I am so pleased to see this organization recognized nationally for its efforts in providing a more complete education for so many of ’s kids.

It’s my pleasure to again acknowledge Edye and Eli Broad for their continuing sponsorship of our award for individual philanthropy. The two of them set the bar very high when it comes to supporting Americans for the Arts and our country’s artists and arts organizations.

We are so lucky to have all of these extraordinary honorees among us tonight. I feel privileged to chair this event for the 10th year, and I am very grateful to all the 7 wonderful people who serve on the benefit committee, as well as my colleagues on the board and staff of Americans for the Arts.

The Bell Family Foundation Young Artist Award

To advance the arts in any discipline, we must continuously embrace the new. And that’s why we believe it is so important to recognize young artists at the National Arts Awards.

Our involvement with Americans for the Arts reaches back to when we first began attending the awards ceremony in 2002 and were so impressed to see a nationally prominent event where visual artists were honored alongside artists from all other disciplines. The awards further distinguished themselves in our minds because Americans for the Arts is committed to recognizing artists who not only excel at their craft, but also represent the best of citizen advocates, using their prominence to help causes which further enrich our communities and our nation. The fact that Americans for the Arts expressly honors young artists in addition to those more established “lifetime” achievers is something that meshes completely with our own interests.

Our longstanding commitment to young people and arts education, as well as to Americans for the Arts, on whose board Maria sits and for which she chairs the National Arts Awards—this year for the 10th time, makes the naming of this award a perfect match for us. We couldn’t be more delighted to know that David Hallberg is the fifth recipient of the award named for our family foundation.

Maria Bell Bill Bell

Eli and Edythe Broad Award for Philanthropy in the Arts

Art has been an integral part of our lives for more than 40 years. We love collecting art, living with art, and sharing art—with as many people as possible.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Art Foundation, which we started as a lending library when our walls were filled and we wanted to continue collecting and sharing great works of contemporary art with museums and audiences around the world. Now, we are building The Broad, a museum on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles that will be home to the Broad collections when it opens in 2015. We find no greater satisfaction than giving back and helping to create new institutions and improve existing ones.

There’s a great saying that “Earth without art is just ‘eh.’ ” The arts play a powerful role in our society and world today. There is no greater creative expression, filled with heart and emotion, than the visual and performing arts. Art stretches our boundaries and our point of view. We collect contemporary art for the very reason that we enjoy conversations with artists whose world view is vastly different than our own.

At a time of limited resources and competing priorities, we need to make a case for the arts. We need to support arts institutions while simultaneously ensuring that art is accessible to everyone — regardless of income, age, background, or beliefs. We need to democratize the arts.

We commend Americans for the Arts for its leadership in making the national case for private and public 19 arts funding. Our country’s collective investment, leveraging government and philanthropic dollars to fund the visual and performing arts, is an extraordinary hallmark of American artistry.

We are delighted to lend our name to this award in recognition of those philanthropists who share our passion for the arts and for giving back. Tonight we commend and congratulate Vicki and Roger Sant for their generosity in the arts, particularly in support of institutions in our nation’s capital.

There are unlimited opportunities to get involved and make a difference. We encourage you to deepen and broaden your commitment to the arts. The needs are significant, but the personal satisfaction and rewards are extraordinary.

THE NATIONAL YOUNGARTS FOUNDATION CONGRATULATES ALL OF THIS YEAR’S NATIONAL ARTS AWARDS HONOREES The National YoungArts Foundation was established in 1981 by Lin and Ted Arison to identify and support the next generation of artists, and to contribute to the cultural vitality of the nation by investing in the artistic development of talented young artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts. Each year, there are approximately 11,000 applications to YoungArts from 15-18 year old (or grades 10-12) artists, and from these, approximately 700 winners are selected. YoungArts provides these emerging artists with life-changing experiences and validation by renowned mentors, access to significant scholarships, national recognition and other opportunities throughout their careers to help ensure that the nation’s most outstanding emerging artists are encouraged to pur - sue careers in the arts. To date, YoungArts has honored more than 20,000 alumni, including Doug Aitken, Josh Groban, Jenji Kohan, Desmond Richardson and Kerry Washington, with over $6 million in monetary awards; facilitated in excess of $150 million in college scholarship opportunities; and enabled its participants to work with master teachers who are among the most distinguished art - ists in the world, such as Marina Abramovic´, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Plácido Domingo, Frank Gehry, Robert Redford and Bruce Weber . Congratulations to tonight’s honorees. Your talent and commitment are a work of art. — Lynda & Stewart Resnick
