This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Montblanc Cultural Foundation: an occasion to acknowledge considerable achievements, while recognising the challenges that lie ahead. Since its inception in 1992, through its various yet interrelated programmes, the Foundation continues to appreciate the significant role that art can play in instigating key shifts, and at times, ruptures, in our perception of and engagement with the cultural, social and political conditions of our times. Departing from this awareness, and coupled with the enduring conviction in the irrefutable link between knowledge and the written Sam Bardaouil word, the Foundation’s mission is underpinned by a profound understanding that several key players demand our support and recognition for a thriving arts culture to flourish. This has been manifested in the Foundation’s equal commitment to both, the who, needless to say, form the nucleus of any artistic community, and the patrons whose support provides artists with the various types of resources and opportunities they need to develop and disseminate their work.

Since 1992, through the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award, the Foundation has awarded some 280 patrons from more than 20 countries, recognising the considerable efforts and sacrifices that true patronage entails. The awardees have ranged from not-for-profit organisations to individual philanthropists. Till Fellrath They have included museum directors whose innovative programming, despite financial

hardship, has made it possible for their respective communities to continue having access 4 to artworks that otherwise would have ended up in storage. Among the awardees have 5 Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath been descendants of seminal artists whose hard work and perseverance has led to the Co-Chairmen, preservation and dissemination of that ’s legacy. The awardees have also comprised Montblanc Cultural Foundation a heterogeneous number of foundations that, each in their own resourceful and creative manner has managed to create opportunities for a wide array of artists to conceive, create and exhibit new artworks. There have also been private collectors who, in recognising the importance of education, have opened up their collections making art ranging from countries as far flung as , , and , to , , , accessible through cutting-edge community outreach programmes. What the Montblanc Mexico and the US, just to name a few, mirrors the Foundation’s conviction in our responsibility as de la Culture Arts Patronage Award has identified amongst all these considerably diverse cultural practitioners to challenge the notions of centre vs. periphery leading the way to a more patrons is a shared courage to take risks, to envision the world differently, while inclusive art-historical canon that acknowledges diverse centres of artistic production, both from recognising all along the central position that artists and artworks occupy in this process the past and of the present. This is yet another one of the Montblanc Cultural Foundation’s visionary of evolution. This is one of the Montblanc Cultural Foundation’s achievements that we positions that we are cherishing today. acknowledge and celebrate today. With 25 years of great accomplishments to its name, the Foundation continues to firmly look ahead Another initiative that we must mark on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the towards all that is yet to be achieved. We are delighted to have been called upon to contribute to the Montblanc Cultural Foundation is its Cutting-Edge Art Collection programme. Initiated in shaping and advancement of the direction that the Foundation will take in the next chapter of its rich 2002, it now stands 210 works strong, representing more than 170 artists hailing from history. We are equally conscious of the responsibility at hand. While building on the successful 32 countries. Beyond including some of the last three decades’ most significant figures programmes that are already in place, we seek to develop new, inclusive initiatives that open up within the contemporary – most of whom were introduced into the collection additional possibilities for artists to produce and showcase their work, through an innovative plethora long before they rose to prominence – the collection’s geographical diversity reflects a of multidisciplinary platforms, where new audiences can connect with art that will challenge us today, fundamental conviction that remains integral to its raison d’être. The inclusion of artists and over the years to come. Preface Anniversary Patron of Art 2016

Henry Steinway stands for the epitome of excellence and craftsmanship. One of the most famous instruments was the Style 2 Grand Piano with rosewood case, filigree music stand and ornately carved lyre.

Henry Steinway believed in being a ‘hands-on’ family businessman. In 1836, Steinway built his first piano in the kitchen of his home in Seesen, Germany, which is commonly referred to as the ‘kitchen’ piano. The piano is currently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. HENRY E. STEINWAY 36 ‘The best piano is the one made without compromise in quality. 37 Strive always to improve the instrument.’

As the Steinway’s reputation for excellence grew in America so did the European demand. The family opened a further factory in Hamburg.

Henry E. Steinway, born in Germany in 1797, was without doubt the most important piano building pioneer of all time.

After a short period working for other piano makers, the Steinway family became entrepreneurs and began manufacturing their own pianos. They then progressed from workshop to factory and opened the first Steinway manufacturing plant in Queens, New York. Henry E. Steinway Patron of Art 2014

After his emigration to New York in 1853, Henry E. Steinway founded ‘Steinway & Sons’ – the legendary company whose inventive spirit is manifested in 128 patents to date. Many of the early ones, such as the overstringing technique and the rim-bending patent covering the process of shaping the curved wooden grand piano rim, determined the shape and construction techniques of the classic grand piano. To this day, Steinway instruments have as strong a reputation as ever for their unique and unmistakable sound and the firm principles of traditional piano building.

Apart from being a true innovator of his craft, Steinway actively supported New York’s music scene and, in 1866, founded the Steinway Hall in . The first and Henry E. Steinway largest concert hall of its time was a historical success: to this day, Steinway Halls all 15.02.1797 – 07.02.1871 over the world serve as cultural meeting places for international musicians and music connoisseurs. The heraldic crest of Emperor Joseph II by the grace of god elected Holy Roman Emperor.

Joseph II with two of his sisters, Hapsburg Archduchess Maria Ann and Maria Elizabeth. (Marie Antoinette was also a sister.) JOSEPH II 56

‘Emperor Joseph II: My dear young man, don’t take it too hard. Your work is 57 ingenious. It’s quality work. And there are simply too many notes, that’s all. Just cut a few and it will be perfect. Mozart: Which few did you have in mind, Majesty?’

Joseph II declared the Burgtheater in Vienna to be known as The German National Theatre. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart premiered ‘The Abduction from the Serail’, ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ and ‘Cosi fan tutte’ there.

In 1764, Joseph II ascended to the throne to become King of the Romans (King in Germany) and a year later he became the emperor of the Roman Empire.

Castle Schönbrunn, built in the style with 1,441 bedrooms and extensive gardens, was the imperial summer residence of the Hapsburg family. It is in the heart of Vienna and its history spans 300 years. Joseph II Patron of Art 2012

With his enlightenment policy – ‘Josephinism’ – Joseph II implemented extensive cultural reforms on account of which the cultural city of Vienna flourished anew. As an avid music lover, the monarch was especially fascinated by piano concerts of an aspiring artist: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Bestowing contracts upon Mozart for years, Joseph II opened the way for him to become one of the greatest composers in music history – and thus Joseph II entered history not only as the ‘Reform Emperor’ but also as one of the most important promoters and patrons of Mozart.

His name has become a byword for a wealthy, generous and enlightened patron of the arts. Maecenas was an important patron for the new generation of Augustan poets, including both Horace and Virgil.

Maecenas had a truly magnificent villa constructed near Tivoli; the most beautiful gardens welcomed waterfalls and even a swimming pool. It fell into disrepair, yet in 1713 there was a plan to rebuild it.

Gaius Cilnius Maecenas is regarded as the first patron of the arts in cultural history and is a symbolic figurehead for cultural responsibility and unselfish commitment. The Auditorium Maecenas was discovered during excavations in 1874. Historians believe it was a summer banqueting hall where plays and poetry were the main entertainment. Elizabeth was very much a woman of the written word; she wrote a considerable number of poems and letters with a very distinctive and elaborate signature.

Elizabeth was a dedicated monarch and ruler: she addressed her court with speeches she wrote. ELIZABETH I 76 ‘I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have 77 the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too’.

Windsor Castle was originally built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. It is still a residence of the Royal Household today. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II spends a lot of time there and often entertains heads of state in the banqueting hall.

The political successes of Queen Elizabeth I not only paved the way for Britain to create an empire that spanned the world, but also transformed her homeland into a genuine nation of culture, in which the English Renaissance flourished.

Elizabeth was a patron of poets, painters and playwrights, the most famous being William Shakespeare. Elizabeth I Elizabeth Patron of Art 2010

Humboldt was a seeker of knowledge. If you want to understand the world, you have to travel around and measure it. That’s the approach that Alexander von Humboldt followed very meticulously. ALEXANDER 106 VON HUMBOLDT 107 ‘There are three stages of scientific discovery: first people deny it is true; then they deny it is important; finally they credit the wrong person.’

A drawing of the Rio Grande de la Magdalena from one of Humboldt’s nine American diaries.

To the present day, Alexander von Humboldt is regarded as the most prominent German naturalist and explorer and an influential patron of the arts and culture.

Alexander von Humboldt embarked on many years of travel, exploring the countries and cultures of South and Central America before returning to his homeland, where he made his name as a philanthropist: he wrote letters of recommendation on behalf of contemporary artists such as Berlioz and Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, which were instrumental in promoting their careers, and in 1842, he established the ‘Civilian’ or ‘Peace Class’ of the ‘Pour le Mérite’ military order, which is still awarded for special services in science and the fine arts, even today.

Tate modestly declined a knighthood but was told, 117 ‘The Royal family will be offended if you refuse again.’

The idea of a national collection of British painting and sculpture had begun with the will of Sir Francis Chantrey, who in 1840 left money to create one, but nothing was done until Tate took matters in hand and resolved to fund a public gallery of British art with his own collection of pictures. With the opening of several other ‘Tate’ galleries, the original is now known simply as the ‘Tate Britain’.

Pope Julius II entered the Vatican in 1503 as the new Pontifex Maximus and during his ten-year papacy worked successfully to safeguard the state of the Church and the unity of Italy.

Julius II was known as the Pope who rebuilt Rome. He commissioned artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, fresco painter Pinturicchio and architects Jacopo Sansovino or Bramante to plan and design magnificent structures. Pope Julius II Pope Patron of Art 2005

In 2006, Jeffersonville celebrated what they termed the ‘rebirth of this most famous of libraries’, originally sponsored by the industrialist Andrew Carnegie. There are over 2,500 libraries worldwide that have benefitted from Carnegie funding.

Andrew Carnegie is still considered one of the greatest patrons of culture in the modern world. The steel tycoon who emigrated from Scotland to the USA was firmly convinced that wealthy people were morally obliged to dedicate themselves to charitable works. Carnegie Hall has seen performances from some of the world’s greatest musicians and performers from Tchaikovsky to The Beatles. Marquise de Pompadour was very much an aficionado of the risqué language of the fan. Whether at a , a reception or the theatre, a flick of the fan to the left, to the right or a touch to the lips could say so much …

Little remains of this rather small château since it was demolished in 1823. The home of Madame de Pompadour, Château de Bellevue was built in 1750 on an estate given to Madame de Pompadour by Louis XV, constructed on a broad plateau in Meudon, above a slope overlooking the Seine to the east (hence its name, Bellevue).

Madame de Pompadour excelled at an art which the majority of human beings thoroughly despise because it is unprofitable and ephemeral: MARQUISE the art of living. 166 DE POMPADOUR 167

The Marquise de Pompadour was considered as King Louis XV’s favourite and his patroness of the arts. Always diplomatic in her approach, she was a valued aide and advisor: she commissioned works of art and secured royal patronage for writers and painters.

The Marquise de Pompadour – the charming mistress of King Louis XV – was not only one of the most charismatic figures at the court of Versailles, but also a passionate and committed art lover. King Louis XV was very much beguiled by the Marquise de Pompadour (whom he made ‘Marquise’ in 1745): within months, the king had the Petit Trianon palace built for her, close to the Château de Versailles. Presumably, there is a discreet passageway linking the two bedchambers. Marquise de Pompadour Marquise Patron of Art 2001

The Marquise de Pompadour supported, among others, promising writers such as Voltaire and musicians such as the young Mozart. The ‘rococo muse’ also played a crucial role in founding the French porcelain factory in Sèvres, and gave creative suggestions for the design of many famous building projects in Paris, such as the Place de la Concorde.

The Patron of Art Limited Edition Marquise de Pompadour honours a captivating personality and an outstanding historical figure. The splendid gold-plated barrel and mountings of Edition 4810 represent the luxury of court life at Versailles. The cap, made of fine Meissen porcelain and decorated with a hand-painted, sepia-coloured rose finished in gold, recalls the Marquise’s love of porcelain. During Charlemagne’s coronation as king of the Franks in St Peter’s, Pope Leo III declared himself Roman Emperor; a move that gave the Pope much political power.

Charlemagne was an extremely good communicator; he spoke all the different languages of his kingdom. Even his name had many variations but Charles le Magne (Charles the Great) became the most widely used. KARL DER GROSSE 176 ‘To have another language is to possess a second soul.’ 177

Erected around 790, the throne is also in Aachen Cathedral; it continued, over the centuries, to be the throne for all German kings. It is very plain, yet symbolic in comparison to the heavily decorated cathedral.

More than 1,000 years ago, as the founder of the Carolingian Renaissance – the fusion of classical ideals with the intellectual heritage of the Germanic world – Charlemagne created the basis for Western culture and a European identity. Inside the Palace of Aachen, the octagon in the centre of the cathedral was erected as Charlemagne’s Palatine chapel (796 – 805). Karl der Grosse (Charlemange) did much patronage for the cathedral and commissioned many of the craftsmen needed to construct this complex octagonal structure. Friedrich II the Great, King of Prussia is the patron behind the magnificent summer palace of in Potsdam near Berlin. Often considered as the German ‘Versailles’, it was designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, who travelled to Paris and Italy to study. Friedrich wanted somewhere he could relax, away from the Berlin court: ‘Sans souci’ translates from French as ‘without concerns’.

The town of Potsdam, with its palaces, was a favourite place of residence for the German imperial family until the fall of the Hohenzollern in 1918.

‘The greatest and noblest FRIEDRICH II pleasure which men can have in this world is to 186 discover new truths; and the next 187 THE GREAT is to shake off old prejudices.’

Voltaire was a frequent visitor to Sanssouci. In 1750, he even moved to Potsdam; then, Friedrich II the Great gave him a salary of 20,000 francs a year and for two years Voltaire stayed within the palace.

Friedrich II the Great was anything but an ordinary king. He is a celebrated historical figure, not only because he saw himself as the ‘first servant of the people’, and because of his Prussian discipline, but also because under his rule art and culture underwent a revival. Friedrich surrounded himself with the ‘intelligentsia’ of the day, like Voltaire or even Casanova. Intellectuals came for a night of round-table discussions, as illustrated above by Adolph von Menzel in his painting Die Tafelrunde. Friedrich II the Great Friedrich Patron of Art 1999

Sanssouci Palace became a centre of attraction for intellectuals, artists and writers from all over Europe. Friedrich II the Great himself wrote numerous philosophical works with his friend Voltaire, including the famous ‘Antimachiavelli’.

A great warrior and learned man, Alexander the Great was. His father, King Philip II of Macedon, put his young son in the tutelage of none other than Aristotle who himself was educated in Plato’s academy in . Alexander learned philosophy and art, as well as how to conquer and govern.

The armies of Alexander the Great conquered much of the known world. But with it came considerable patronage of art and architecture. ‘Know ye not that the end and object of conquest is to avoid doing the same thing as the conquered?’ ALEXANDER 196 THE GREAT 197

The Battle of the Granicus River (334 BC) was the first of three major battles between Alexander the Great and the Persian Empire. These became the subject of great works of art. In fact, the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC traditionally marks the beginning of the Hellenistic period, a period during which art, culture, music and architecture thrived.

Few people have been able to shape the cultural course of the world so decisively as This statue of Alexander the Great shows him riding his horse Bucephalus and carrying a winged statue of the Alexander the Great. goddess Nike. Bucephalus was Alexander’s favourite horse; after he died in a battle, Alexander named the city beside the battlefield (believed to be in Northern India) Bucephala in his horse’s honour. Through the influence of his teacher Aristotle, the young king of Macedonia sowed the seeds of Greek architecture, philosophy and art in large parts of the Orient during his conquests. The cities founded by Alexander the Great – particularly Alexandria in Egypt – soon became centres of culture, science and research in the dawning age of Hellenism.

The Winter Palace has ornate gates, yet the gilded emblems of Imperial Russia were torn down during the 1917 uprisings. The latter were restored recently.

Through a number of successful wars, Peter I the Great expanded the Tsardom into a much larger empire, turning it into a major European power. The tsar led a cultural revolution that replaced some of the medieval, social and political systems with ones that were modern, scientific, westernised, and based on Enlightenment. PETER I THE GREAT 206 ‘I have conquered an empire but I have not been able to conquer myself.’ 207

The Grand Cascade is modelled on one commissioned by Louis XIV for the Château de Marly. The fountains are located below the grotto, and placed in the central pool lies the large Samson Fountain. It depicts the moment when Samson tears open the jaws of a lion, representing Russia’s victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War (1700 – 21).

Moved by the spirit of the Enlightenment, Tsar Peter I the Great led the Russian Empire out of its cultural isolation into the centre of the great nations of Europe. The Russian Empire had an intricate golden coat of arms on which a black two-headed eagle wears imperial crowns. The flying ribbon indicates the Order of Saint Andrew, important to the Orthodox Church, while the eagle’s chest is shielded with an image of Saint George, mounted on a horse, defeating the dragon. Yekaterina Alexeyevna or Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, was the longest-ruling female leader of Russia; she reigned from 1762 until her death in 1796 at the age of 67.

After the death of the Empress Elizabeth on 5 January 1762, Peter succeeded to the throne as Emperor Peter III, and Catherine became empress consort. The imperial couple moved into the Winter Palace in . Catherine’s patronage of the architects Starov and Quarenghi saw the palace enlarged and transformed. CATHERINE II 210

‘You philosophers are lucky men. 211 You write on paper and paper is THE GREAT patient. Unfortunate Empress that I am, I write on the susceptible skins of living beings.’

Catherine was also responsible for introducing the lasting affection for all things French to the Russian court. Hence, French became the language of the court; Russian was relegated for use only when speaking to servants and inferiors. The Russian aristocracy was encouraged to embrace the philosophies of Molière, Racine and Corneille.

Tsarina Catherine’s ambition was to continue the work of Peter the Great. Indeed, her commitment to the arts was impressive: she corresponded with Voltaire, Diderot and d’Alembert, among others. The period of Catherine the Great’s rule, the Catherinian Era, is often considered as the Golden Age of the Russian Empire. As a patron of the arts, she presided over the age of the Russian Enlightenment and established the Smolny Institute, the first state-financed higher education institution for women in Europe. Catherine II the Great Patron of Art 1997

Catherine II the Great is responsible for having the Hermitage – the famous Winter Palace – erected in St Petersburg, and it is thanks to her love of painting that the royal art collection grew from a few dozen paintings to more than 4,000.

Semiramis was a consort of Ninus (Nimrod), builder of the infamous Tower of Babel. The story of Babel says that the Hebrew god confounded the occupants’ speech so that they could no longer understand each other.

Myth and legend surround Semiramis: she was purported to be the legendary wife of King Ninus (Nimrod), and to succeed him to the throne of Assyria. It is also claimed that Semiramis was an actual person in ancient Mesopotamia who invented polytheism and, with it, goddess worship. She appears in writings by Voltaire and Dante.

Dante SEMIRAMIS ‘She is Semiramis, of whom 220

we read that she succeeded Ninus, and was his spouse; 221 she held the land which now the Sultan rules.’

Hislop, a Christian writer, believed Semiramis had a child with the Akkadian deity Tammuz, a God of vegetation.

The legendary queen Semiramis ruled around 800 BC in the Assyro-Babylonian empire and was regarded as the patroness of Nabu, the tutelary deity of the scribes.

The evidence strongly suggests that both the eyewitness writers, Ctesias and Clitarchus, originally attributed the Hanging Gardens to Semiramis. More evidence points to Semiramis who could have been Sammuramat (Nimrod’s earthly wife); together they built Babylon and created ‘The Hanging Gardens’. Semiramis Patron of Art 1996

Queen Semiramis adored the fine arts, which were mainly found in the ancient city of Babylon, as well as the magnificent buildings of King Nebuchadnezzar II, including the Ishtar Gate and the Hanging Gardens. According to legend, it was Semiramis that gave these gardens their name, although this remains scientifically unconfirmed to this day.

The Prince Regent was highly criticised for his lifestyle but he was nonetheless a dedicated patron of the arts. Part of his legacy, paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Rembrandt, Jean-Baptiste Martin, Gainsborough and George Stubbs are part of the Royal Collection today.

When George III died in 1820, the Prince Regent, then aged 57, ascended the throne as George IV. George’s coronation was in line with his lifestyle: a magnificent and expensive affair. The painting depicts a view looking down the nave of Westminster Abbey: George IV sat on Edward I’s throne and was crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Royal Pavilion – also known as the Brighton Pavilion – is a former royal residence. It was built in the Indo-Saracenic style with domes and minarets reminiscent of India. The interiors, however, come in a French neoclassical style with decorative paintings by Biagio Rebecca.

Despite various periods of turmoil during his reign, King George IV of Britain, with his appreciation for the fine arts, managed to shape British culture to his taste.

A coastal town, Brighton became popular with sea bathing. The early Royal Pavilion, designed by architect John Nash, was the Prince Regent’s retreat. The Prince Regent The Prince Patron of Art 1995

The influence of King George IV of Britain is still visible today. Because of the monarch’s penchant for culture, art forms from the period of his reign are known as those of the ‘Regency Period’.

Louis XIV longest-ruling European monarch in history: he reigned as King of France for 72 years. Louis XIV generously supported the royal court: he brought the Académie Française under his patronage and became its ‘Protector’, thus allowing Classical French literature – Molière, Racine and La Fontaine – to flourish.

Louis XIV was known as ‘The Sun King’ (Le Roi Soleil), a solar emblem that decorates the many gates of Versailles.

Augustus was born Gaius Octavian into an old plebeian family. His maternal great-uncle was Julius Caesar.

Augustus of Prima Porta is a 2.03-metre-high marble statue of Augustus Caesar, which was discovered on 20 April 1863 in the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, near Rome. Augustus Caesar’s wife Livia Drusilla, now known as Julia Augusta, retired to the villa after his death. The sculpture is now displayed in the Braccio Nuovo, Vatican Museums. GAIUS OCTAVIAN 246 ‘I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble.’ 247

IMPERĀTOR CAESAR DĪVĪ FĪLIVS AVGVSTUS For centuries, the Forum Romanum was the centre of Roman public life: the site of triumphal processions, elections and the venue for public speeches. The second imperial forums, built by Gaius Octavia, was the Forum of Augustus and its Temple of Mars (the Avenger): he vowed to have it built on the eve of the Battle of Philippi (42 BC), so he could avenge the assassination of Caesar.

Gaius Octavian, honoured by the Roman Senate with the name Augustus, was the driving force behind the cultural revival of the epoch that followed numerous years of war.

The mausoleum is one of the first projects initiated by Augustus in the City of Rome following his victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. It held the remains of the imperial family, such as Nero, Caligula and Claudius. Octavian Patron of Art 1993

By means of cunning tactical moves, strategic liaisons with powerful Romans and deliberate promotion of the arts, Octavian created an elaborate network of culture. Because of his support for the construction of splendid public buildings, which made Rome a city of marble and a powerhouse of artistic and intellectual endeavour, his name is forever connected with the heyday of the Roman Empire.

Lorenzo de Medici was a prolific writer. He wrote many poems, and the prose shown here is a handwritten note from him featuring his signature.

In the Chapel of the Magi, in the Medici Palace, ‘The Procession of the Magi’ (ca 1460) is a fresco depicting the ‘Three Kings’ – Casper, Balthasar and Melchior. Benozzo Gozzolli painted the fresco characters as members of the Medici family: here, Lorenzo de Medici is pictured as King Balthasar, ‘the middle king’, the bringer of myrrh. Known as ‘Lorenzo the Magnificent’ by contemporary Florentines, de Medici was a diplomat, politician and a patron of scholars, artists and poets.

Lorenzo de Medici was also known as ‘Magnificent’ due of his philanthropic patronage of the arts. The portrait above, with Florence in the background, is by Girolamo Macchietti (1535 – 1592). Lorenzo de Medici Lorenzo Patron of Art 1992
