TCM BREAKFAST CLUB SCREENING The Long Goodbye I 1973 Directed by Robert Altman With characteristic fearlessness, director Robert Altman dared to offend the purists with his 1970s interpretation of the Raymond Chandler classic The Long Goodbye (1973). It turned out to be a triumph for both him and its star, Elliott Gould. TCM writer David Humphrey assesses the film and describes it as a fine tribute to Altman, who died on November 20 at the age of 81. Raymond Chandler devotees were perhaps entitled to feel screen, and plainly gave priority to injecting comedy into the nervous at the news that Elliot Gould had been cast as Philip persona of Chandler’s sardonic, hardbitten private detective. In fact, chronic hepatitis C is often referred to as the silent disease because – for many people – it can be in the body for decades without any symptoms. Cole is joining the campaign to encourage others with chronic hepatitis C to put aside fear and stigma and take action. YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music. -

Making Music Grow since 1975 Notations Fall/Winter 2010 Barbara and John LoFrumento Establish A Program to Assist Autistic Students ASCAP CEO John LoFrumento and his wife Barbara, have established The ASCAP Foundation Barbara and John LoFrumento Award to support music and music therapy programs for autistic learners. This award, which was recently presented to the Music Conservatory of Westchester Music Therapy Institute, will enable the Institute to expand its music therapy program and provide weekly music therapy sessions to special needs students in the Eastchester, NY school district. Students will have the opportunity to work with music educators on songwriting and instrumental instruction. Music therapy uses the power of music in a focused way to accomplish growth, learning, healing and change. Elements of music such as repetition, form, dynamics, tempo and rhythm specifically address the learning needs of children with autism creating an environment of attention, creativity and expression. The ASCAP Foundation Barbara and John LoFrumento Award will make it possible for the Institute to reach out to those in the community who might otherwise not have an opportunity to experience music and its healing abilities. For those children, music therapy will make a significant difference in Barbara and John LoFrumento their lives by addressing important areas including communication and language development, socialization, emotional development and self expression, as well as helping to develop their musical skills and talents. The ASCAP Foundation Joe Raposo Children’s Music Award To honor his legacy, the family of Joe Raposo has established The ASCAP Foundation Joe Raposo Children’s Music Award, which will support emerging talent in the area of children’s music. -
