Cabaret Shows the Variety of CCH and NDA Jonah Scott Thursday, February 17th was the opening night for NDA and CCH’s annual performance of Cabaret. A variety show that contains many selections from popular musicals and skits originally performed by the cast of The Carol Burnett Show. Many musicals were showcased including the dark comedy of Little Shop of Horrors, the 1920s throwback musical Ragtime, the 80s smash hit Footloose, the all female cast of Dreamgirls, and the 60s Hippie revolution of Hair. A large number of CCH men came out to support their fellow Colonels as they put on a heck of a show. The show opened with Ragtime, a musical throwback to the jazzy upbeat music of the 1920s, which showcased Eric Torres and Jonah Scott. After that came the 80s dark comedy of Little Shop of Horrors in which Eric Torres comedically portrayed a sadistic dentist and Emma Parks Brandon Rozanski is proud to give blood. Mission to Mars Peter Craig A mission to Mars has been a dream of man since the first satellite Mr. Greg Shumate was launched into space in the 1960’s. The Cold War fueled a lot of space exploration competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. NASA and Sputnik squared off with space races throughout from the 60’s to the 90’s. Both raced to reach space, orbit the earth, land on the moon, and send a rover to Mars. The space race ended before a man could ever land on Mars. But with the revival of a Russian civilization, the new Russian Federal Space Agency has had a breakthrough in reaching Mars. A few years ago Russia developed the mathematics and the rockets to power a space shuttle to Mars in the time of three months. Although they have developed the rockets to get there, they have not developed a return trip. Russians have been notorious for having no fear, in World War II they would run in to battle carrying a clip of ammo and no weapon, so to no surprise, they had zero problem picking up volunteers for a suicide mission. The government would not pass it however. They have yet to develop a space craft that can sustain life for three months in the unknown. In the meantime, Russia is still working on finishing this project and has picked up the help of China and France. They continue to simulate Community Service News landings and hope to have the project ready for execution in the next few years. Most males, though they do not show it, do not look forward to this day. Valentine’s Day is the name it was given, but why it is considered a holiday I will never know. It is the most cliché holiday of them all. Hallmark Holiday is an understatement for Valentine’s Day. It is nothing but an unnecessary expense for a male. They have to spend anywhere from 20 to hundreds of dollars to show their girlfriends/wives that they “love” them. Love is supposed to be an emotion and material things cannot represent it. This is a cliché holiday, that was simply thrown into the worst time of the year and does not aid the seasonal depression that men may bear and only gives more of a reason to look forward to spring time. The Covington Catholic Colonels went into the District Championship game with high hopes of beating rival Holmes High School. Unfortunately, Holmes had other plans as the Colonels stepped onto the Bulldogs’ home court. The final score was 62-51 in favor of the Bulldogs. The main problem for the Colonels was their turnovers. After they would make a nice bucket Holmes would quickly score and get the Colonels to force a turnover with a full court press. Senior Jake Thelen led CovCath with 26 points and 13 rebounds, and senior Alex Connelly added 12 points. But the Colonels couldn’t overcome 1-of-11 3-point shooting. Even with the loss, the Colonels still go to Region, but as a lower seed. There was some luck on Cov Cath’s side as they drew the Ryle Raiders in the first round of Regionals (they beat Ryle earlier in the season 81-72). It was looking good for the Colonels during the game during the 1st half, for the Colonels were leading by a few at half time. Senior Andrew Schult had a career high 16 points, 14 of which he scored in the first half. In the Junior Division no team has shown that true domination like Team Shumate in the senior league. At the top of the league are three teams with a record of three wins and one loss. These teams consist of Team Bernhard, Team Perkins, and Team Tomlin. Team Bernhard was seen as the top team in the league until their recent loss to Team Tomlin. Other than these three teams the other teams are all evenly spread out in talent. Looking at this year’s Junior division the clear champion is not going to be easy to decide upon. Although a recent game with Boone County left even the Colonel’s jaws on the floor. The Colonels recently faced the Boone County High School bowling team and it was a battle. Well, Boone County was having a battle for perfection. During a Baker Game, where the team chooses five bowlers to bowl two frames each, Boone County almost bowled a perfect score. They had nine strikes and unfortunately bowled a nine on the last frame to have a game total of 299. Even though Boone County got the best of the Colonels they look forward to finishing the season off strong. They hope for a victory at the Region Tournament and to make a run at the State Championship. Good luck to the Covington Catholic Bowling Colonels.
