  • We Will Rock You”
“We Will Rock You” By Queen and Ben Elton At the Hippodrome Theatre through October 20 By Princess Appau WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS When one walks into the Hippodrome Theatre to view “We Will Rock You,” the common expectation is a compilation of classic rock and roll music held together by a simple plot. This jukebox musical, however, surpasses those expectations by entwining a powerful plot with clever updating of the original 2002 musical by Queen and Ben Elton. The playwright Elton has surrounded Queen’s songs with a plot that highlights the familiar conflict of our era: youths being sycophants to technology. This comic method is not only the key to the show’s success but also the antidote to any fear that the future could become this. The futuristic storyline is connected to many of Queen’s lyrics that foreshadow the youthful infatuation with technology and the monotonous lifestyle that results. This approach is emphasized by the use of a projector displaying programmed visuals of a futuristic setting throughout the show. The opening scene transitions into the Queen song “Radio Gaga,” which further affirms this theme. The scene includes a large projection of hundreds of youth, clones to the cast performing on stage. The human cast and virtual cast are clothed alike in identical white tops and shorts or skirts; they sing and dance in sublime unison, defining the setting of the show and foreshadowing the plot. Unlike most jukebox musicals the plot is not a biographical story of the performers whose music is featured. “We Will Rock You” is set 300 years in the future on the iPlanet when individuality and creativity are shunned and conformity reigns.

  • Herding Cats: Infosec Follies
Herding Cats: Infosec Follies October 2012 Herding Cats: Infosec Follies 2 Here’s a hot sports opinion for you: I think our industry is terrible at information risk analysis and management. There is a significant gap between what information security professionals consider high risk and what business professionals consider high risk. I’ve been in those meetings where information security has had their legs cut out from under them, but I’ve also been in meetings where open checkbooks for security were passed around like month-old Halloween candy1. There are a number of reasons for this; let’s explore a few here. The most glaring omission is our repeated usage of inaccurate (or inconsistent) historical data. If we are terrible at forecasting when and where events will occur and their impact to our business, we look no better than the sales person who forecasts a 75% miss in the last week of the quarter. So we take an ultra conservative approach to try and cover our bases. There are a bunch of you out there who have done this successfully for a number of years, and so far you haven’t been bit. There used to be an old saying (which probably still exists in some circles, but I’m going to pretend it doesn’t anymore) in the PCI DSS compliance world that went like this: “You are compliant until you are compromised.” Meaning, it didn’t matter what you reported to your processor as long as you were breach free. The moment that breach hit, however, you were in a world of hurt as your misrepresentation of compliance status came to light.

SEPTEMBER 2020 MONTHLY BLOG/ 117 AN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY FOLLY-BUILDER & CAT-LOVER If citing, please kindly acknowledge copyright © Penelope J. Corfield (2020) Public monuments to cats – as opposed to literary, artistic and musical celebrations1 – are rare to find, especially dating from the eighteenth century. So this majestic example deserves full appreciation. The lordly cat sits atop a giant Grecian vase, all forming the substantial Cat Monument.2 It was designed in 1749 and built c.1770 in the new weatherproof composite known as Coade Stone.3 Erected at Shugborough Park in Staffordshire, the Monument was commissioned by Thomas Anson (c.1695-1773). He was the felinophile, who owned the estate and had the wealth as well as the space to indulge his taste for architectural patronage in full. Curiously enough, the identity of this publicly honoured cat remains uncertain. One strong possibility is that it commemorates Thomas Anton’s own favoured pet, named Khouli-Khan. This cat was the last of a line of Persian cats owned by the family. Hence, behind the luxuriant mustachios on the Monument’s lordly feline, the statue may show the round face and short muzzle that is characteristic of that particular breed. 1 Another possibility, however, is that the honoured cat was the adventurous moggy who circumnavigated the globe in the years 1740-44 with Admiral George Anson (1697-1762). He was the much admired younger brother of Thomas Anson. And the childless George Anson had bequeathed his great fortune, based upon Spanish treasure, to his older sibling. As a result, some of the monuments and memorabilia at Shugborough Park were devised as fraternal tributes to the circumnavigator.

THE MORNING LINE DATE: Monday, December 14, 2015 FROM: Melissa Cohen, Michelle Farabaugh PAGES: 14, including this page. C3 December 14, 2015 Public Theater Announces ‘Twelfth Night’ Musical By Andrew R. Chow The Public Theater’s popular Public Works program will return in the summer with a musical adaptation of “Twelfth Night,” created by Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub. The Public Works program brings together professional and nonprofessional actors from across New York City’s five boroughs with song-and-dance productions of classic works. “The performers come together to create a vibrant theatrical tapestry; you may be able to tally the newcomers onstage, but in this embracing context they bring as much pleasure as the polished performers,” Charles Isherwood wrote in The New York Times about last season’s “The Odyssey.” This season will lead off with “Twelfth Night,” Shakespeare’s comedy of crossed signals which appeared in its nonmusical form at Shakespeare in the Park with Anne Hathaway in 2009. The Public Theater puts on Shakespeare in the Park. The music and lyrics for the musical will be written by Ms. Taub, who has ample experience in both the pop and Broadway worlds. Mr. Kwei-Armah, a British actor and the artistic director of Baltimore’s Center Stage, will direct. According to Ms. Taub, the production will be set in a port city during a carnival. While the spoken text will be in Shakespeare’s words, the songs will be in contemporary language. “It’s so amazing to start from a play that works so well, and just zoom out the emotional moments and turn them into big songs,” Ms.
