Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires. -

The Mesnevis alone have individual titles. In the case of romances these are as a rule formed of the names of the hero and heroine, as 'Khusrev and Shfrin;' in the case of didactic poems they are often purely fanciful, as Nefhat-ul- Ezhar 'The Waft of the Flowers;' sometimes the title may be indicative of the subject of the work, as Saqi-Name 'The Book of the Cupbearer,' which is the name of many poems dealing with the pleasures of wine w^hether literal or allegoric. Qasidas are often distinguished by a title taken from the subject of the exordium, or from the word that forms the redif, or, where there is no redi'f, from the last letter of the rhyming words. Thus a Qasida-i Behariya or 'Spring Qasi'da,' is one the exordium of which describes the spring season, a Gul Qasidasi or 'Rose Qasi'da' is one where the word " ' ' gul or rose forms the redif, and a Qasida-i Ra^iye or R Qasida' is one in which the rhyme- words end in the let- ter R. Auerbach, Tanpınar and Edib in Istanbul: Reinventing the Humanities and Comparative Literature An Interview with Efe Khayyat on Istanbul 1940 and Global Modernity: The World according to Auerbach, Tanpınar, and Edib OĞUZ TECİMEN uring the last decade ground-breaking studies on Erich Auerbach have appeared Din English, reviving the interest in Auerbach’s extraordinary work worldwide. Kader Konuk’s East West Mimesis (2010), for instance, demonstrates the historical, geo- graphical and academic circumstances that conditioned Auerbach’s writing of Mimesis in Istanbul. Konuk aptly shows how Auerbach’s masterpiece is not just a work of exile, as Edward Said and others once argued, but was thoroughly informed by Auerbach’s tenure in Istanbul between 1936-1947. As another example, the collection of writings by Auerbach, Time, History and Literature (translated by Jane O. Newman, 2013) along with James I. Porter’s comprehensive introduction to the volume, covers Auerbach’s in- tellectual trajectory from beginning to end, depicting Auerbach as a multifaceted intel- lectual (philologist, philosopher, historian, literary critic), and revealing the relevance of Auerbach’s work to comparative and world literary studies today. Despite these and many other extraordinary contributions to Auerbach scholarship, there seemed to be something missing in this ever-expanding corpus. This compelled him to place his immediate wants before all else ; he could not afford to work for art's sake alone, and many of his verses were written either for money or in the hopes of gaining it. That under such conditions he should have attained the high position that he did proves him to have been possessed of more than ordinary ability, and the remark of the critics quoted by Latifi is well-founded that it must have been by sheer force of native talent that a man without education, who had never sat at the feet of muderris or professor, was able to produce works of imaginative art that filled the cultured with admiration and amazement. 20I sionally, but not often, tells a story, and sometimes indulges in a little fine language. He is, moreover, the last Tezkire- writer to attempt a complete survey of the field of Ottoman poetry, to start at the' beginning and carry the thread down to the time of writing. The subsequent biographers take up the story at about the point where it is left off by the preceding writer to whose work they mean their own to be a continuation, always bringing the history down to the year in which they write. Riyazi was a poet of some distinction, and as we shall have occasion to speak of his career more fully later on, it is enough to say here that he was born in 980 (1572— 3) and died in 1054 (1644). His Tezkirc, which is of very con- siderable value, is dedicated to Sultan Ahmed I and was begun in the year 10 16 (1607 — 8) and completed in the Rejcb of 10 1 8 (1609). In the preface the author takes credit to himself, justly enough, for having avoided prolixity in language, lest it should prove a 'cause of weariness to the reader and the writer.' He also claims to be more critical than his predecessors who, he says, have inserted in their 'iczkires poets and poetasters alike, while he has admitted the poets (Jiily, turning the others out. ABSTRACT: The article discusses the evolution of the mukhammas genre in the national enlightenment and jadid literature, the principles of evolution of this genre, the place of the generalliterary process in the system of literary genres, its new principles, theme and ideological content, examples of works of jadid and enlightened poets. Traditional and innovative features in comparative typological monograph, analytical-comparative, descriptive and critical aspects are analyzed. I.INTRODUCTION In the history of national literary science, there is no separate research work on the system of lyrical genres of enlightenment and modern literature and the principles of its evolution. This problem has not been studied in the science of literature in monographic point of view. Some scholarly views on certain minor lyrical genres are also presented in general and overview in analyzes within the literary process. However, the study of this issue, the principles of evolution of literary genres, the coverage of poetic landscapes of the period, their analysis in terms of form and content are the most important tools for a deeper understanding of the general landscape and features of the literary process.
