Myths and legends are in fact the beliefs and ventures of different nations in previous ages. Legends deal with subjects such as gods, the creation of the world and the mankind, and so on. The theme of invulnerability is a major one amongst legends. This paper tries to discuss the similarities and differences of this theme in two aforesaid immortal epics. The authors of the monograph provide a critical analysis of both the arguments and terms put forward primarily by Soviet Oriental school, and those introduced in modern nationalistic writings, which misrepresent the background and cultural heritage of Nezami. Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period. Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires. -

The article on Fitnet Khanim in Fati'n Efendi's Tezkire is as usual of the slightest, and later writers such as Zihni Efendi the author of 'Famous Women', and Ahmed Mukh- tcir Efendi, who has compiled a little book entitled 'Our Poetesses,' have been able to add but little to his meagre details. This poetess, whose personal name was Zubeyde, belonged to a talented and distinguished family, her father, Mehemmed Es^ad Efendi, being Sheykh-ul-Islam under Mah- mud I, and her brother, Mehemmed Sherif Efendi, holding the same high office under '^Abd-ul-Hamid I. MEVLANA JALALUDDİN RUMİ and SUFISM (A Dervish’s Logbook) Mim Kemâl ÖKE 1 Dr. Mim Kemâl ÖKE Mim Kemal Öke was born in Istanbul in 1955 to a family with Central Asian Uygur heritage. Öke attended Şişli Terakki Lyceum for grade school and Robert College for high school. After graduating from Robert College in 1973, he went to England to complete his higher education in the fields of economics and history at Cambridge University. He also specialized in political science and international relations at Sussex, Cambridge, and Istanbul universities. In 1979 he went to work at the United Nation’s Palestine Office. He returned to Turkey in 1980 to focus on his academic career. He soon became an assistant professor at Boğaziçi University in 1984 and a professor in 1990. In 1983, TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) brought Öke on as a general consulting manager for various documentaries, including “Voyage from Cadiz to Samarkand in the Age of Tamerlane.” Up until 2006 he was involved in game shows, talk shows, news programs and discussion forums on TRT, as well as on privately owned channels. He also expressed his evaluations on foreign policy in a weekly syndicated column, “Mim Noktası” (Point of Mim). Though he manages to avoid administrative duties, he has participated in official meetings abroad on behalf of the Turkish Foreign Ministry. Throughout his academic career, Öke has always prioritized research. Of his more than twenty works published in Turkish, English, Urdu and Arabic, his writings on the issues of Palestine, Armenia, Mosul, and the Caliphate as they relate to the history of Ottoman and Turkish foreign policy are considered foundational resources. -

CEU eTD Collection i Abstract In this thesis I focus on the late 19th century Azerbaijani history from the perspective of intellectual history. I mainly talk about the Enlightenment Movement with an emphasize on the intellectual debates on Religion and Secularism. Intellectual influences of the newly emerged intelligentsia with a special focus on cultural and intellectual life in Baku is also one of the main focal points of the presented work. My main argument in the thesis is that, without cultural and intellectual revival of late 19th century, which became possible with Baku oil boom, establishing the first Democratic Republic in Muslim world in 1918 wouldn’t be possible. I start with Baku Oil Boom of 1870s and continue with the establishment of the first Azerbaijani newspaper, “Akinchi” and then after examining the main intellectual debates, I conclude the thesis with the two most influential Azerbaijani intellectuals of the late 19th century. -

Introduction to Nūr al-dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Jamī (1414-1492) Having looked last week at the essentially oral tradition of Kabir, we come, by contrast, this week to one of the most cultivated and highly educated figures not only of the 15th century, but of the entire Islamic poetic tradition, Nūr al-dīn ʿAbd al- Raḥmān Jamī (1414-1492). Born in Khorasan, he spent most of his life in Herat under the reign of the Timurids, at a time when this region was the most advanced and culturally brilliant centre of the Islamic world. Jamī was not just a poet, although poetry does seem to have received his most intense and abiding attention; he was also a brilliant scholar, a Sufi master of the Naqshbandī order, and one of the most important interpreters of the ideas of Ibn ‘Arabī, writing several important commentaries and expositions which, in the eastern regions, were as highly regarded and widely studied as the works of the Shaykh al-akbar himself. Jamī’s output was prodigious; there are about 39,000 lines of verse extant, plus 31 prose works. In contrast with Kabir, these were well preserved in manuscripts that have come down to us in the present day – Herat being, as we saw in our first week, a great centre of book production in the 15th century. Despite this, he has been oddly neglected at certain periods and in certain places within the Islamic world – he is not as widely known and universally loved as, say, Hafiz, Sa’di or ‘Iraqī – and also by modern western scholars. -

The idea called "Literature lives - nation lives" in the article of Chulpan's "What is literature?" (1914) guided the national revival. At the beginning of the 20th century, the jadid educators aimed gathering, storing, studying and publishing the rich literature and cultural heritage of the Uzbek people.
