Prof. Dr. Bayram SİNKAYA June 2019, 217 pages This thesis analyzes the Islamist and Turkist conceptualization of nation during the Second Constitutional Era through the written works of Mehmet Akif Ersoy and Ziya Gökalp. In this sense, the articles, poems, letters, and books written by these two late Ottoman intellectuals as well as their recorded speeches reviewed chronologically in order to analyze the changes of their conceptualizations of nation. The understandings of nation of the selected intellectuals were compared through three constitutive elements gathered from various definitions of nation as the political community, the sovereignty, and the common values. The main argument of this thesis is both Akif’s and Gökalp’s understandings of nation had changed in time in parallel to the existing sociopolitical conditions of Turkey. Eventually, it can be said that both Akif and Gökalp had conceptualized nation through a sovereign entity based on certain common values. Keywords: Nation, Islamism, Turkism, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Ziya Gökalp. iv ÖZ GEÇ OSMANLI DÖNEMİNDE İSLAMCILARIN VE TÜRKÇÜLERİN MİLLET KAVRAMSALLAŞTIRMALARI: MEHMET AKİF ERSOY VE ZİYA GÖKALP ÜZERİNE BİR KARŞILAŞTIRMA UFUK, Kemal Yüksek Lisans, Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Dr. Öğr. Ü. Bayram SİNKAYA Haziran 2019, 217 sayfa İşbu tez, İkinci Meşrutiyet Dönemi’nde İslamcıların ve Türkçülerin millet kavramsallaştırmalarını Mehmet Akif Ersoy ve Ziya Gökalp’in yazılı eserleri üzerinden analiz etmektedir. Bu kapsamda, zikredilen iki geç dönem Osmanlı aydınının makaleleri, şiirleri, kitapları, aynı zamanda kayıt altına alınmış söylevleri millet kavramsallaştırmalarındaki değişiklikleri açıklayabilmek için kronolojik olarak incelenmiştir. Mezkûr aydınların millet kavramından anladıkları siyasi topluluk, egemenlik ve ortak değerler olmak üzere çeşitli millet tanımlarından elde edilen üç temel unsur üzerinden karşılaştırılmıştır. Tezin esas iddiası, Akif ve Gökalp’in millet kavramlarının Türkiye’nin sosyopolitik şartlarındaki değişikliklere paralel olarak değişimlere uğradığıdır. Nihayetinde, hem Akif’in hem de Gökalp’in milleti belirli ortak değerler üzerinden egemen bir varlık olarak kavramsallaştırdıkları görülmektedir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Millet, İslamcılık, Türkçülük, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Ziya Gökalp. v This work is dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Sağlam. vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Bayram Sinkaya, who was not only an awesome guide while supervising the constitution of this thesis but also very insightful and friendly during the process. Although I must admit that I caused him to experience some exhaustive moments from time to time with my ‘misinterpreted’ approaches to some particular issues, I must admit along the same line that I have never witnessed anyone else who was that much supportive and patient towards me. I would also like to thank to Dr. Mustafa Serdar Palabıyık for his incredibly helpful advices, comments, and criticisms. Introducing ‘Redhouse Dictionary of Ottoman Turkish to English’ and Herder, and his summarizer comments on Akif’s ummah-nation scopes as well as his guidance towards the methodology of the thesis were invaluable to me. It is already falling short of words to fully describe her immeasurable value to me; still, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Güliz Dinç. Her comments on the methodology of the thesis were very helpful to distinguish two hypotheses from each other. Her warm reaction after reading the thesis made me prideful; will forever ring in my mind. Last but not least, I would like to thank to my little brother, Kaan Ufuk, not for anything related with the thesis in particular but his everlasting trust and support attributed to me. This thesis, along with several other fulfillments that can be named ‘achievements’ in our lives, could not be materialized without the continuous support we see through each other. I have vastly benefited from the digitalized version of National Library of Turkey (Milli Kütüphane) through the digitally scanned copies of the Sırat-ı Müstakim and Sebilürreşad journals. Additionally the website of Turkish Historical Society (Türk Tarih Kurumu) had helped me a lot on changing the dates from the Rumi and Mohammedan calendars to the Gregorian calendar. Additionally, I would also like to mention the websites that helped me a lot to translate the archaic Ottoman words and idioms to contemporary Turkish, which are osmanice.com, osmanlica.ihya.org, and luggat.com. vii TABLE OF CONTENTS PLAGIARISM ......................................................................................................................... iii ABSTRACT ............................................................................................................................. iv ÖZ .............................................................................................................................................. v DEDICATION ......................................................................................................................... vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ................................................................................................... vii TABLE OF CONTENTS ...................................................................................................... viii AUTHOR’S NOTE .................................................................................................................. xi INTRODUCTION .................................................................................................................... 1 1. • Failures and Achievements of Albanian Nationalism in the Era of Nationalism
FAILURES AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF ALBANIAN NATIONALISM IN THE ERA OF NATIONALISM Nuray BOZBORA ABSTRACT The development of Albanian nationalism was not uniform from the beginning and it followed distinct patterns. First there were local protest movements, some were culturally based while others were created by the local elite to protest against local and specific problems. Later these different patterns in Albanian nationalism turned into mass uprising during the 1910 and 1911s. The aim of this paper is to understand the crucial period of mass uprising of Albanians and to analyse how these different patterns in the movement had participated and expressed themselves, what the basic motivation of uniting around a common purpose was, and ease and difficulties in this regard. Daha sonra Arnavut milliyetçiliği içindeki bu farklı gelişme biçimleri, 1910 ve 1911 yıllarında kitlesel bir ayaklanmaya dönüşmüştür. The national Turkish Party was founded prior to the 1919 election. In a sense; it aimed at maintaining policies of the national Constitutional monarchy Party and the movement of Turkism in the period of the armistice and of an occupation and cosmopolitan climate. The party participated in the pre-election work and elections and made some name for itself. The party dissented in opinion from other parties at the national Congress. Abdulhak Adnan (Adıvar), hamdullah Suphi (Tanrıöver), mehmet emin (erişirgil) and Ahmet ferit (Tek), party’s nominees, got into parlia- ment in the elections in which the party participated with an independent list. In order to better understand the cosmopolitan pluralistic capital in a political way, we can consider that a newly established party, which formally adopted ”Turkish national- ism“, was able to win a parliamentary seat in armistice Istanbul. The national Turkish Party was not able to open any branch office except in Istanbul. They tried to explain themselves to the masses through the newspaper İfham. The party sent Ahmet hikmet and hamdullah Suphi as delegates to the national Congress.

Prof. Selçuk Akşin Somel Keywords: Derviş Vahdeti, Volkan, Pan-Islamism, Ottomanism, Political Islam The aim of this study is to reveal and explore the political ideas of Derviş Vahdeti (1870-1909) who was an important and controversial actor during the first months of the Second Constitutional Period (1908-1918). Starting from 11 December 1908, Vahdeti edited a daily newspaper, named Volkan (Volcano), until 20 April 1909. He personally published a number of writings in Volkan, and expressed his ideas on multiple subjects ranging from politics to the social life in the Ottoman Empire. His harsh criticism that targeted the policies of the Ottoman Committee of Progress and Union (CUP, Osmanlı İttihâd ve Terakki Cemiyeti) made him a serious threat for the authority of the CUP. Vahdeti later established an activist and religion- oriented party, named Muhammadan Union (İttihâd-ı Muhammedi). Although he was subject to a number of studies on the Second Constitutional Period due to his alleged role in the 31 March Incident of 1909, his ideas were mostly ignored and/or he was labelled as a religious extremist (mürteci).

Çalışmamızda, Mehmet Akif’in İslamcılık fikirleri ve faaliyetleri hakkında bilgi verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Akif’in İslamcılık fikri için yaptıklarına değinilmiştir. Mehmet Akif’in Milli Mücadele’deki faaliyetleri ve fikirleri verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Akif, Müslüman toplumların, Gayr-ı Müslim toplumların boyunduruğu altında yaşayamayacağı fikrini savunmuştur. Osmanlı devletinin yıkılma sürecine girmesinden dolayı, imparatorluğun bünyesinde yaşayan devletlerin kendi kaderinin tayin etmesi gerektiği fikrini savunarak, Milli Mücadeleye her alanda destek vermiştir. Akif’in siyasi yönü üzerinde de durulmuştur. O siyasetin her türlüsünden kaçınmıştır, daha ileri giderek siyaset kelimesinden bile uzak durmuştur. Siyasetten Allah’a sığınmıştır.

Its central figure is the theologian and print entrepreneur Mehmed Džemaludin Čaušević (1870-1938), who returned to his Austro-Hungarian-occupied home province from extended studies in the Ottoman lands at the start of this period with an ambitious agenda of communal reform. Čaušević’s project centered on tying his native land and its Muslim inhabitants to the wider “Islamic World”—a novel geo-cultural construct he portrayed as a viable model for communal modernization. Over the subsequent decade, he and his followers founded a printing press, standardized the writing of Bosnian in a modified Arabic script, organized the country’s Ulema, and linked these initiatives together in a string of successful Arabic-script, Ulema-led, and theologically modernist print publications. By 1914, Čaušević’s supporters even brought him to a position of institutional power as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Reis-ul-Ulema (A: raʾīs al-ʿulamāʾ), the country’s highest Islamic religious authority and a figure of regional influence between two empires.

This study examines what role chaos theory has within the education process and what effect it has by describing the views of university faculty regarding chaos and education. The partici- pants in this study consisted of 30 faculty members with teaching experience in the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Science and Literature, and the School of Veterinary Sciences at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University in Burdur, Turkey. The sample for this study included voluntary participants. As part of the study, the acquired qualitative data has been tested using both the descriptive analysis method and content analysis. Themes have been organized under each discourse question after checking and defining the processes. To test the data, fre- quency and percentage, statistical techniques were used. The views of the attendees were stated verbatim in the Turkish version, then translated into English by the researchers. The findings of this study indicate the presence of a “butterfly effect” within educational organizations, whereby a small failure in the education process causes a bigger failure later on. Key Words Chaos, Chaos and Education, Chaos in Social Sciences, Chaos Theory. The term chaos continues to become more and that can be called “united science,” characterized by more prominent within the various fields of its interdisciplinary approach (Yeşilorman, 2006).

  • A REASSESSMENT: the YOUNG TURKS, THEIR POLITICS and ANTI-COLONIAL STRUGGLE the Jeunes Turcs Or Young Turks Were a Heterogeneous
DOĞU ERGIL A REASSESSMENT: THE YOUNG TURKS, THEIR POLITICS AND ANTI-COLONIAL STRUGGLE INTRODUCTION The Jeunes Turcs or Young Turks were a heterogeneous body of in tellectuals with conflicting interests and ideologies. However, their common goal was opposition to Hamidian absolutism. Although the Young Turks were the heirs of the New Ottoman political tradition of constitutionalism and freedom —which were believed to be the final words in modernization by both factions— they did not come from the elite bureaucratic circles of the New Ottomans1. The Young Turks were the products of the modern secular, military or civilian professional schools. They «belonged to the newly emerging professional classes: lecturers in the recently founded government colleges, lawyers trained in western law, journalists, minor clerks in the bureaucracy, and junior officers trained in western-style war colleges. Most of them were half-educated and products of the state (high) schools. The well-educated ones had no experience of administration and little idea about running a government. There was not a single ex perienced statesman amongst them»12. The historical evidence at hand suggests that the great majority of the Young Turk cadres was recruited primarily from among the children of the petty-bourgeoisie. Most of the prominent Young Turk statesmen came from such marginal middle-class families. For example, Talat Paşa (Prime Minister) was a small postal clerk in Salonica with only a junior high-school education 1. The best socio-historical account of the

Central Asia can be roughly described as the region to the north and the north-west nf the China Wall. The China Wall was built to koopthe namadie peoples -ineloding the Tuikic peoples- out of China. The Wall also roughly corresponded to the frontler of feıtile iand wbere agriculture could be practised. The fmt "state" of the Turlcicpeoples was the Empiıe of the Hmıs. for which the apprOximate dates 220 BC-216 AD are given. But whether or not this formatian can be considered a state or empire in the proper sense of the word is not clear. because the Hmıs did not use the written word. INTRODUCTION Traditional Turkish houses have undergone major developments in time and in regions distinct in terms of climate, nature and culture, and this has brought different house types. On the other hand, all traditional houses are made up of certain cultural values. When the architectural design and details of traditional Turkish houses are examined, it is seen that all designs and solutions serve a certain purpose and have a certain benefit. In particular, the concept of privacy developed through the transition to settled life and acceptance of Islam; played an important role in the formation of traditional Turkish houses.
