Singh Professor of English University of Lucknow-226007 ______________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: It is an informative paper on the construct, form, and expansion of Ghazal as a poetic form. The origin of the word ‘Ghazal' goes back to the Arabic word ‘Ghazal' meaning ‘deer' in English. The reference finds roots to the act of hunting a deer. When a hunter shoots a deer in a moonlit night in the Arabian desert, the deer getting pierced with the arrow, runs around helplessly in search of water. In this state, the throat makes the sound like "gaz - gaz". A lover, in the same way, pines for his beloved, and feels emotional bleeding; this leads to the making of Ghazal. The paper discusses various aspects of Ghazal. Key Words: Ghazal, Sher, Matla, Takhallus. The Ghazal is a Persian word referring to a form of Persian poetry. It became popular in Urdu literature later. It is, generally speaking, a form of poetic expression describing platonic love. The locale, tone, and content –almost everything around Ghazal find a lover and his unattained love as the central concern. The narrator almost knows it too well that the meeting of the lovers is unattainable, yet they keep striving till the last. This pang and desire emanate into the verses of Ghazal. The complete Ghazal comprise of Shers (couplets); most of the Ghazal has less than fifteen shers, A good Ghazal has approximately five Shers. -

Ajeeb Aadmi—An Introduction I , Sa‘adat Hasan Manto, Krishan Chandar, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Kaifi Azmi, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Ali Sardar Jafri, Majaz, Meeraji, and Khawaja Ahmed Abbas. These are some of the names that come to mind when we think of the Progressive Writers’ Movement and modern Urdu literature. But how many people know that every one of these writers was also involved with the Bombay film indus- try and was closely associated with film directors, actors, singers and pro- ducers? Ismat Chughtai’s husband Shahid Latif was a director and he and Ismat Chughtai worked together in his lifetime. After Shahid’s death Ismat Chughtai continued the work alone. In all, she wrote scripts for twelve films, the most notable among them ◊iddµ, Buzdil, Sån® kµ ≤µ∞y≥, and Garm Hav≥. She also acted in Shyam Benegal’s Jun∑n. Khawaja Ahmed Abbas made a name for himself as director and producer for his own films and also by writing scripts for some of Raj Kapoor’s best- known films. Manto, Krishan Chandar and Bedi also wrote scripts for the Bombay films, while all of the above-mentioned poets provided lyrics for some of the most alluring and enduring film songs ever to come out of India. In remembering Kaifi Azmi, Ranjit Hoskote says that the felicities of Urdu poetry and prose entered the consciousness of a vast, national audience through the medium of the popular Hindi cinema; for which masters of Urdu prose, such as Sadat [sic] Hasan Manto, wrote scripts, while many of the Progressives, Azmi included, provided lyrics. -

International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 4, No. 10; August 2014 The Role of Poetry Readings in Dispelling the Notion that Urdu is a Muslim Language Hiba Mirza G-1, Maharani Bagh New Delhi – 110 065 India Abstract Looking at the grim scenario of the future of Urdu in India, and its overwhelming identification with a particular community (i.e., Muslims) have indeed contributed in creating a narrow image of sectarian interests. However, the concern of the intellectuals about its declining trend, seems to be melting, if we take the case of Mushaira (poetic symposium). Through interviews with both the organisers and the attendees of Delhi Mushairas I collected a serious of impressions that speak to the role of a Mushaira in advancing a cosmopolitan, rather than a communal image of Urdu. Uniting people through poetry, mushairas temporarily dissolve differences of caste, creed and religion. Conflict, Transition, and Hesitant Resolution: A Survey Of Urdu Literature, 1850-1975 by Shamsur Rahman Faruqi [Note: the definitive version of this article was published in K. M. George, ed., Modern Indian Literature--An Anthology; Volume One: Surveys and Poems (New Delhi: Sahitya Akademi, 1992), pp. 420-442.] For much of North India, the world changed twice in 1857. It first changed in May, when columns of Company soldiers marched into Delhi and proclaimed the end of Company Bahadur's rule. The world changed again in September, by which time it was clear that the brief Indian summer of Indian rule was decisively over. If the first change was violent and disorderly, it was also fired by a desperate hope, and a burning anger. Anger had generated hope--hope that the supercilious and brutal foreigner, who understood so little of Indian values and Indian culture, could still be driven out, that he was not a supernatural force, or an irrevocable curse on the land of Hindustan. The events of 1857-1858 drove the anger underground, and destroyed the hope. The defeat, dispersal, and death of the rebels signalled the end of an age, and the ushering in of a new order. It was an order which was essentially established by force, but which sought to legitimate itself on the grounds of moral superiority. It claimed that its physical supremacy resulted from its superior intellectual apparatus and ethical code, rather than merely from an advantage in numbers or resources. It was thus quite natural for the English to try to change Indian society from both the inside and outside. -

BAILY, John (2010), “Afgan music in Australia”, in CÔRTE-REAL, Maria de São José (ed.), Migrações Journal - Special Issue Music and Migration, October 2010, no. 7, Lisbon: ACIDI, pp. 157-176 Afghan music in Australia John Baily* Abstract Based on research carried out in Melbourne and Sydney in 2009, this paper discusses Afghan migration to Australia, the emergen- ce of the multicultural society, the civic promotion of the Afghan Bazaar Precinct in Dandenong (Melbourne), the genres of Afghan music performed in Australia, with brief biographies of some of the musicians, and a survey of CDs produced in Australia. The pa- per concludes that the Afghan-Australian community (less than 25,000 overall) is too small to support a fully-fledged Afghan mu- sic profession. The result is a vigorous amateur music scene cate- ring for a community of music lovers. The work of three contem- porary Australian composers influenced by Afghan music is also discussed, to show how the culture of this immigrant community has enriched Australian culture. My research in Herat was wide-ranging, looking into the performance of various genres: urban and rural; folk, popular and art; vocal and ins- trumental; traditional and modern; professional and amateur; female and male; and also at various forms of religious singing that did not fall clearly into the category of music, such as Sufi zikr, Shiah lamentations and Quranic recitation. -

Through this study, the author addresses the issue of regionalism and its effects on politics at a National level. A study of the course of the movement also allows one to look at the problems in representation and how ideological stances merge with material conditions and needs of the country’s citizenry to articulate the desire for, what is basically, an equitable form of democracy that is peculiar to Pakistan. The form of such a democratic system of governance can be gauged through the frustrations and desires of the variety of Pakistan’s oppressed classes. Moreover, the fissures within the discourses that appear through the PNA, as well as their reassessment and analysis helps one formulate a fresh conception of resistance along different matrices of society within the country. -
