Karline McLain, Asian Studies The University of Texas at Austin AIIS Dissertation Proposal 2000 Whose Immortal Picture Stories?: Amar Chitra Katha and the Construction of Indian Identities Karline McLain Abstract: Amar Chitra Katha (“Immortal Picture Stories”), the leading Indian comic book series, enjoys a ubiquitous presence among the urban middle-class in India and the South Asian diaspora. These comic books provide a unique opportunity for the study of the definition and negotiation of a modern middle-class Indian identity, as the multiplicity of intended and received messages of the comics can be examined by studying both their creation and consumption in conjunction with a careful reading of the content. My project will challenge traditional approaches to public culture which typically focus on either creation or consumption, one at the expense of the other, by viewing both as active and contested processes which together act with text and image to continually recreate and transform identities. Furthermore, my project will engage identity formation – particularly the formation of religious identities – on both the national and transnational levels and examine the tensions between them. Background: Amar Chitra Katha has dominated the flourishing comic book market since its inception in 1967, selling over 436 titles and more than 78 million issues. Anant Pai, founder of the comics, conceived of them as a means of teaching “Indian themes and values” to western- educated Indian children who knew western history at the purported expense of Indian history and mythology. Hence the comics, which are first produced in English and then translated into Hindi and other languages according to demand, can be loosely grouped into two categories: mythologicals and historicals. -

Social Transformations in Contemporary Society, 2021 (9) ISSN 2345-0126 (online) SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION OF PAKISTAN UNDER URDU LANGUAGE Dr. Sohaib Mukhtar Bahria University, Pakistan [email protected] Abstract Urdu is the national language of Pakistan under article 251 of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973. Urdu language is the first brick upon which whole building of Pakistan is built. In pronunciation both Hindi in India and Urdu in Pakistan are same but in script Indian choose their religious writing style Sanskrit also called Devanagari as Muslims of Pakistan choose Arabic script for writing Urdu language. Urdu language is based on two nation theory which is the basis of the creation of Pakistan. There are two nations in Indian Sub-continent (i) Hindu, and (ii) Muslims therefore Muslims of Indian sub- continent chanted for separate Muslim Land Pakistan in Indian sub-continent thus struggled for achieving separate homeland Pakistan where Muslims can freely practice their religious duties which is not possible in a country where non-Muslims are in majority thus Urdu which is derived from Arabic, Persian, and Turkish declared the national language of Pakistan as official language is still English thus steps are required to be taken at Government level to make Urdu as official language of Pakistan. There are various local languages of Pakistan mainly: Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Kashmiri, Balti and it is fundamental right of all citizens of Pakistan under article 28 of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973 to protect, preserve, and promote their local languages and local culture but the national language of Pakistan is Urdu according to article 251 of the Constitution of Pakistan 1973. -

It is a condition in which an author loses the ability to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown. The problem is more difficult in the context of poetry than prose, as in the latter case authors need not be very concise while expressing their ideas, also the various aspects such as rhyme, poetic meters are not relevant for prose. One of the most effective ways to overcome this writing block for poets can be, to have a prompt system, which would help their imagination and open their minds for new ideas. A prompt system can possibly generate one liner, two liner or full ghazals. The purpose of this work is to give an ode to the Urdu/Hindi poets, and helping them start their next line of poetry, a couplet or a complete ghazal considering various factors like rhymes, refrain, and meters. The result will help aspiring poets to get new ideas and help them overcome writer’s block by auto-generating pieces of poetry using Deep Learning techniques. A concern with creative works like this, especially in the literary context, is to ensure that the output is not plagiarized. -

Conflict, Transition, and Hesitant Resolution: A Survey Of Urdu Literature, 1850-1975 by Shamsur Rahman Faruqi [Note: the definitive version of this article was published in K. M. George, ed., Modern Indian Literature--An Anthology; Volume One: Surveys and Poems (New Delhi: Sahitya Akademi, 1992), pp. 420-442.] For much of North India, the world changed twice in 1857. It first changed in May, when columns of Company soldiers marched into Delhi and proclaimed the end of Company Bahadur's rule. The world changed again in September, by which time it was clear that the brief Indian summer of Indian rule was decisively over. If the first change was violent and disorderly, it was also fired by a desperate hope, and a burning anger. Anger had generated hope--hope that the supercilious and brutal foreigner, who understood so little of Indian values and Indian culture, could still be driven out, that he was not a supernatural force, or an irrevocable curse on the land of Hindustan. The events of 1857-1858 drove the anger underground, and destroyed the hope. The defeat, dispersal, and death of the rebels signalled the end of an age, and the ushering in of a new order. It was an order which was essentially established by force, but which sought to legitimate itself on the grounds of moral superiority. It claimed that its physical supremacy resulted from its superior intellectual apparatus and ethical code, rather than merely from an advantage in numbers or resources. It was thus quite natural for the English to try to change Indian society from both the inside and outside. -

She settled in a small cooped up flat in T Vanitha, Sather nagar, Delhi. She came across a few Sikh people who helped her in one way or other. She had learnt various anecdotes about the Moghal and the British rulers. Some A Document on Peace were tell- tale stories and some were records of the past. She and Protest in the Pages even visited whores colony to collect sources for her material. Stained With Blood By Where ever she went she showed courtesy to her fellow human Indira Goswami, beings and tried to help them in all possible ways. The novel is an out pour of her bitter memories during the anti -Sikh Notions 2018, Vol. IX, Riots caused by the assassination of Smt. Indira Gandhi No.2, pp. 23-33, when she was the prime minister of India. Neither the Article No. 5 politicians nor the administers bothered much about the communal calamities. -

The dominant mode of writing poetry is Rekhta, which focuses on certain male-centric sensibility, and emphasises on experiences from a male perspective. As a counter to the dominant Rekhta, Rekhti lays bare women experience, and their responses to the complexities of life. In the present paper I read Rekhti as a poetic mode to express dissent against the dominant structures in the realm of aesthetic and what is considered as suitable content for poetry. The fact that most of the Rekhti poets were men of certain standing in society who deliberately mocked women and their mannerism, sexuality and much more points at the garb that has been deployed to cover their own sexuality. Key Words: Dissent, Subversion, Homosexuality, Urdu Poetry, Aestheticism Rekhta, the dominant genre of poetry in Urdu, is mystical in nature and accentuates heterosexual love by presenting it in themes of separation and longing. Contrary to it, Rekhti is non-mystical and speaks unabashedly of earthly aspects of love, not attempting any metaphysics; the love depicted can be homosexual or heterosexual. The important point of departure in tradition of rekhti, as above mentioned distinctions are amorphous and largely depend on reader‟s vantage point, is of diction and gender of „mashuq‟(beloved) and „ashiq‟(lover). -
