FALL 2019 ԱՇՈՒՆ

WELCOME HOME!

n September 15th, we joyously celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, our annual ‘Homecoming Sunday.’ Our Sunday School held its opening day, with our St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian School opening on Saturday, September 14th. Sunday SchoolO parents, teachers, and students gathered for an opening assembly before going to their classrooms, ready for a new year. After classes, students and families attended Divine Liturgy and witnessed the Antasdan and Basil Blessing service.

Following church services, parishioners and families enjoyed a special Homecoming Celebration for the entire parish. Children enjoyed inflatable attractions including a large indoor slide. We extend our gratitude to all of our volunteers for preparing the delicious soujoukh & eggs breakfast. Welcome Home to St. James! continued on page 2

CELEBRATING THE 88TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR PARISH

VARTAVAR

On Sunday July 28th, parishioners came to church to attend Divine Liturgy and celebrate one of the most important Feast Days in the Armenian Church – the Feast of the Transfiguration. We’d like to thank everyone who attended our 2nd Annual Vartavar Celebration, including our wonderful Watertown Fire Department! Children waited for the countdown before launching hundreds of water balloons and buckets of water in our effort to replicate the ancient Armenian tradition. All ages joined in the fun! An inflatable water slide, ice cream, and other games provided additional opportunities for fun on the hot summer day. Thank you to Linda Sahagian for sponsoring the ice cream truck. What a fun, joyous, uplifting (and very wet!) celebration! Thank you to all who attended and volunteered! So much fun was had by all! ԼՈՅՍ ԼՐԱԳԻՐ | ԱՇՈՒՆ 2019 7

PLEASE NOTE: This year, the Feast of the Nativity falls on a Monday, and the Eve of the Feast falls on a Sunday. Because of this occurrence, Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 5th will be celebrated in the evening, with only Morning Service on Sunday morning. The canons of the Armenian Church forbid celebrating more than one Liturgy on the same altar in the same church, in the course of the same day. Armenian Church fathers provide this explanation: There is one Christ, who was crucified on one cross – the symbol of which is the holy altar. Also, the celebrant of the Liturgy represents one Christ, head of the Church.
