  • A Form Within a Form a Conversation Between Dor Guez and the Composer Hagop K
A Form within a Form A Conversation between Dor Guez and the Composer Hagop K. Dor Guez: The fate, or should I say the physical presence, of a work of art that isn't fixed to a place doesn't necessarily attests to its origin, or sources of influence. This is especially true in the case of musical works like your own. Hagop K.: Similarly to movables such as ceramics, carpets, silverware, manuscripts, etc., sometimes it's impossible to point with any certainty to the origin of a melody. Objects such as these are easily transferable and thus it's often hard to pinpoint the identity of their maker. This enabled nationalistic historians to bend their findings and dub unmistakablely Armenian artifacts "Ottoman." D.G.: The nation-state's artificial borders distort the historiography of art. For this reason, the phenomenon of inscription (in Armenian "hishatakaran") is not accidental when we are dealing with minority culture, which is often nomadic. H.K.: More than any other people, we insist on artistic validation and authorship. There is a built-in blindness in the writing on Christian artisanship originating from Armenia. For example, academic literature tends to ignore the Armenian influence on the ceramics made throughout the Ottoman Empire. The prevalent reasons given to this oversight are that many of the objects manufactured by Armenian potters were commissioned by Muslim clients, or that Armenian carpets were woven and commissioned by Muslim subjects of the Empire. Having been subsumed by the metanarrative under the heading "Ottoman" or "Turkish" works, ornaments manufactured in Armenian workshops (decorated ceramic tiles, jars and eggs) were deemed unworthy of a chapter of their own.

  • Armenian Christians in Jerusalem: 1700 Years of Peaceful Presence*
Laury Haytayan1 Прегледни рад Arab Region Parliamentarians Against Corruption UDK:27(479.25)(569.44) ARMENIAN CHRISTIANS IN JERUSALEM: 1700 YEARS OF PEACEFUL PRESENCE* Abstract This paper examines the presence of the Armenians in Jerusalem for the past 1700 years. This historical account sheds the light on the importance of Jerusa- lem for the Armenians, especially for the Armenian Church that was granted the authority to safeguard the Holy Places in the Holy Land with the Greek and Latin Churches. During the centuries, the Armenians survived all the conquests and were able to find all sorts of compromises with all the different powers that conquered Jerusalem. This study shows that the permanent presence is due to the wise religious authorities and the entire Armenian community who had no backing from super powers but they had their religious beliefs and their per- sistence in safeguarding the Holy Places of Christianity. The author takes the reader back in History by stopping at important events that shaped the history of the Armenians in the Holy Land. Key words: Jerusalem, Armenians, Crusaders, Holy Land, St James Monas- tery, Old City, Armenian Quarter. Introduction This paper comes at a time when Christians in Iraq and Egypt are being mas- sacred in their churches, Christians in Nazareth are being forbidden to decorate a Christmas tree in public space, and Christians in Lebanon are seeking to pre- serve their political rights to safeguard their presence in their Homeland. At a time, when the Palestinian Authority is alerting the International Community of the danger of the continuous and ferocious settlement construction in East Jerusalem by the State of Israel, and at a time when Christians of the East are being silent on the fate of Jerusalem by leaving it in the hands of the Palestinian and Israeli negotiators, hoping that the Unites States will be the caretaker of the Christians of Jerusalem.

  • Magdalena Sto J an O V a the Cemetery Church of Rožen
MAGDALENA STO J AN O V A THE CEMETERY CHURCH OF ROŽEN MONASTERY Rožen Monastery is situated on a hill between Rožen and Melnik amidst magnificent mountain scenery. Isolated from busy centres and difficult of access—though rich in natural beauty—this position has proved exceptionally favourable for the monastery’s survival up to the present day. Its architecture indicates a relatively early construction date, around the twelfth or thirteenth century1, but the first written source for Rožen Monastery dates only from 15512. Having studied a great number of Greek documents, the architect Alkiviadis Prepis3 has established that the monastery was originally a de pendency with a church dedicated to St George, which was built in the thir teenth century by the Byzantine soldier George Contostephanus Calameas and his wife. According to surviving data from the period up until 1351, in 1309 they presented the dependency to the Georgian Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, and continued to enrich it4. After this area was conquered by 1. On the basis of the construction and the plan, Assen Vassiliev dates the church to about the twelfth century : A Vassiliev, Ktitorski portreti, Sofia 1960, p. 88. George Trajchev opines that the monastery was built in 1217 (Maitastirite v Makedonija, Sofia 1933, pp. 192- 3). The opinion that the church dates from the fourteenth or fifteenth century is shared by Metropolitan Pimen of Nevrokop ('Roženskija manastir’, Tsarkoven vestnic, 17 (1962) 14) and Professor V. Pandurski ('Tsarcovni starini v Melnik, Ročenskija manastir i Sandanski’, Duhovna cultura, 4 (1964) 16-18). Nichola Mavrodinov suggests an earlier date in: 'Tsarcvi i manastiri v Melnik i Rožen, Godishnik na narodnija musej, vol.

EMBODIED CONTESTATION: ALTERNATIVE RITUAL CONCLUSIONS ON THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO by CLARE VAN HOLM Under the Direction of Kathryn McClymond, PhD ABSTRACT Despite its nearly thousand year history as a Christian penitent ritual, the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage has undergone rapid transformation in the last three decades, attracting a specific community of people who see themselves as “authentic” Camino pilgrims. Upon arrival at the shrine of Santiago, the traditional end of the pilgrimage route, many pilgrims express feelings of dissatisfaction. Drawing upon field research and interviews, this paper analyzes the practices of pilgrims along the Camino de Santiago route, at the shrine in Santiago de Compostela, and at the alternative conclusion site in the Galician coastal town of Finisterre. I argue that pilgrim dissatisfaction relates to pilgrim experiences in Santiago that are incongruous with their pilgrimage up until that point. In response, pilgrims have created alternative ritual conclusions that more closely relate to their experience on the Camino route and affirm their identity as “authentic” pilgrims.

  • Enter Air Poised to Provide Technical Maintenance Services
Warsaw, March 28, 2018 Enter Air poised to provide technical maintenance services Enter Air, Poland’s largest charter airline, has founded Enter Air Services, a company providing aircraft technical maintenance services for the carrier’s fleet. The launch of such services within the Group will generate significant savings without compromising the top quality of Enter Air’s fleet. “The provision of technical maintenance services is among the most significant components of any airline’s business and it is one of the most expensive such components. Having the Group’s own technical maintenance service provider will enable us to generate additional value for shareholders, leaving a large chunk of revenue and margin within the Enter Air Group,” says Grzegorz Polaniecki, Management Board Member and CEO of Enter Air. “We have built a technical maintenance team from scratch in roughly 9 months. We have hired the best aviation mechanics available on the market with experience acquired in recognized foreign technical maintenance service organizations. We have attracted them back to Poland where they will have stable and well-paid jobs,” - Polaniecki adds. Enter Air Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of Enter Air. Initially, the company’s technical maintenance services will be provided to Enter Air in all of the carrier’s operating bases in Poland. Ultimately, the company will provide its services also in Enter Air’s foreign bases. Enter Air expects to generate savings thanks to synergies caused by having a technical maintenance service organization within the Group. The carrier’s aircraft will be taken care of by a reliable technical maintenance team in a manner that will enable the Group to minimize risks arising from changes in rates or terms of contracts entered into with third party providers of such services.

Present-day Armenia is bounded by Georgia to the north, Iran to the south-east, Azerbaijan to the east and Turkey to the west. From 1920 to 1991 Armenia was a Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, but historically its land encompassed a much greater area including parts of all present-day bordering countries (see fig.). At its greatest extent it occupied the plateau covering most of what is now central and eastern Turkey (c. 300,000 sq. km) bounded on the north by the Pontic Range and on the south by the Taurus and Kurdistan mountains. During the 11th century another Armenian state was formed to the west of Historic Armenia on the Cilician plain in south-east Asia Minor, bounded by the Taurus Mountains on the west and the Amanus (Nur) Mountains on the east. Its strategic location between East and West made Historic or Greater Armenia an important country to control, and for centuries it was a battlefield in the struggle for power between surrounding empires. Periods of domination and division have alternated with centuries of independence, during which the country was divided into one or more kingdoms.
