In north the country borders with Georgia, in south – with Iran, in east – with Azerbaijan, in west – with Turkey. The current territory of the Republic of Armenia is 29800 square km and is situated about 1800 m above sea level. The highest point is mount Aragats (4090 m), the lowest – canyon of the river Debet (400 m). Yerevan is the capital of the country. According to the 2003 census data population is 3, 2 million people, 1, 1 of which lives in Yerevan. When is the best time to visit Armenia? Armenia is equally wonderful in all the seasons of year. In comparatively small territory you can meet amazingly diverse nature and weather; spring, summer, autumn and winter are full and brightly expressed. Season of tours to Armenia starts in April and lasts until November, though nature gets the peak blossom in the end of May, but autumn is plentiful until the end of September. During the tourist season our guests can enjoy dishes, made of ecologically pure, natural and extremely tasty ingredients. July is the very full of tourist season. From December to the end of March doors of resort Tsakhkadzor are open to all the winter rest and winter sport fans. The best destination for the therapeutic recreation is hydropathical resort Jermuk, which you can visit any time of the year. How to get to Armenia? Armenia does not have outlet to sea.

Present-day Armenia is bounded by Georgia to the north, Iran to the south-east, Azerbaijan to the east and Turkey to the west. From 1920 to 1991 Armenia was a Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, but historically its land encompassed a much greater area including parts of all present-day bordering countries (see fig.). At its greatest extent it occupied the plateau covering most of what is now central and eastern Turkey (c. 300,000 sq. km) bounded on the north by the Pontic Range and on the south by the Taurus and Kurdistan mountains. Its strategic location between East and West made Historic or Greater Armenia an important country to control, and for centuries it was a battlefield in the struggle for power between surrounding empires. Description No 777bis The Sanahin Monastery consists of a large group of buildings on the plateau above the Debet gorge and skilfully integrated into the impressive mountain landscape. The buildings are laid out on two rectangular axes, with their facades facing west. The main church, built in the 10th century, is the Cathedral of the Redeemer (Amenaprkitch). It is an example of the “domed hall,” characteristic of 10th century Armenian Identification architecture. Armenia's capital Yerevan was proclaimed the 12th International Book 2012 Capital, and in the timespan from April 22, 2012 to April 22, 2013 large-scale measures and festivities were held not only in Armenia but also abroad. The book festival got together the world's writers, publishers, librarians, book traders and, in general, booklovers everywhere. The year saw a great diversity of events which were held in cooperation with other countries. Those events included book exhibitions, international fairs, contests ("Best Collector Coins CENTRAL BANK OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA Literary Work", "Best Thematic Posters"), a variety of projects ("Give-A-Book Day"), workshops, and film premieres. The Central Bank of Armenia celebrated the book festival by issuing the collector coin "500th Anniversary of Armenian Book Printing". In 2012, the 20th anniversaries of formation of Armenian Army and liberation of Shushi were celebrated with great enthusiasm. On this occasion, the Central Bank of Armenia issued the gold and silver coins "20th Anniversary of Formation of Armenian Army" and the gold coin "20th Anniversary of Liberation of Shushi". The 20th anniversary of signing Collective Security Treaty and the 10 years of the Organization of Treaty were celebrated by issuing a collector coin dedicated to those landmark events.

It borders Azerbaijan from the East and occupies the 18% of RA territory (the largest marz by its territory). The marz includes the territories of Gavar, Tchambarak (former Krasnoselsk), Martuni, Sevan and Vardenis. The population of the marz comprised the 7.4% of total population of the republic as of January 1, 2003. The 66.6% of population resides in the rural settlements. The marz includes 5 towns such as Gavar, Tchambarak, Martuni, Sevan, Vardenis and 93 rural settlements. The longest extension of the marz from the North-West to the South-East comprised 115 km, from the West to the East - 85 km, the deepest landslide is the canyon of the Getik river (village of Dsoravank) (1325 m), the highest peak – Ajdahak mountain (3598 m). Spitakasar (3555 m), Vardenis (3522 m) and Geghasar (3446 m) are the highest mountains. Argichi (51 km), Gavaraget (47 km) and Masrik (45 km) are the longest rivers. Marzes of the Republic of Armenia in Figures, 1998-2002 201 Sevan is the largest lake (1260 km2, the height above sea-level is 1898m); the crater lakes of Ajdahak and Aghmaghani are comparatively small lakes - up to 50 m in diameter and at a depth of 15 m.
