It is with extreme gratitude and deep humility that we recognize the thousands of benefactors listed in this special Report to Benefactors. ey include 650 contributors to the $4 million Capital Campaign for e Center for Compassionate Care and 7,461 benefactors to the Annual Fund. e report also includes the names of 3,233 persons remembered in Memorial Gis and 93 recognized in honorariums.

Your support has impacted Family Hospice and Palliative Care’s ability to provide compassionate, quality care to persons with life-limiting illness and their families. We celebrate and affirm you and your generosity in advancing the resources that sustain our programs and allow us to initiate new programs Rafael J. Sciullo that address the ever-increasing need for our services in Western Pennsylvania.

From fiscal years 2007 through 2009 our accomplishments are many. e most evident is the opening of e Center for Compassionate Care in Mt. Lebanon in 2007. e open houses and ribbon-cutting ceremony will long be remembered as historical moments for our organization. e vision of service we projected has proven true: to date the Inpatient Unit has cared for 1,263 patients and their families. With e Center came a multitude of new opportunities to educate the public on hospice and palliative care benefits, train family caregivers, provide seminars and workshops to healthcare professionals, and develop opportunities of volunteerism.

And, we must mention receiving the Circle of Life Award from the American Paul Winkler Hospital Association as another highlight. We are most proud to share this award with our corporate partner, Presbyterian SeniorCare, for the implementation of the Woodwell Program at long-term care facilities. e award signifies the excellence that we strive to attain in each program.

Your generosity also has supported long-standing programs, such as Camp Healing Hearts for grieving children, and 14 volunteer programs. Between FY2007 and 2009, Family Hospice and Palliative Care provided $810,298 in free care to qualified patients who otherwise would not have received our services. at amount includes care visits, supplies, medications, medical equipment, free massages, pet therapy and transportation.

The center for compassionate care: A place of profound service Aer nearly three years of extensive renovation to the former Ward Home at 50 Moffett Street in Mt. Lebanon, Family Hospice and Palliative Care put the finishing touches on e Center for Compassionate Care and cut a symbolic ribbon signifying the organization’s new chapter on providing end- of-life care in Western Pennsylvania. ere was a swell of pride that day among hundreds of benefactors, guests and staff who attended that autumn event. e largest hospice provider in the region now had an all- encompassing home of its own, complete with a beautiful 12- bed Inpatient Unit, full service kitchen, office space for administrative and clinical staff, an auditorium for educational seminars and large group events, a library, meditation room, and space allocated for clinical team meetings. e 48,000 square-foot facility gave Family Hospice visibility, not only because of its beautiful gardens and homelike environment, but because it could now have space to provide innovative patient programs and family support, such as Caregiver Training. In a room specifically designated for this training, families and friends of patients received grassroots education on how to use medical equipment, how to avoid injury and what to do when symptoms escalated. ey would leave the sessions a little more confident and prepared to participate in homecare. More than 940 patients – men and women of all ages and all walks of life – would need e Center by the end of June 2009. Dozens of families would participate in the Caregiver Training Program. e Center’s visibility has led to opportunities to educate the public on the benefits and entitlement of hospice care. Today, e Center for Compassionate Care stands as a premiere hospice inpatient unit in Western Pennsylvania. Patient families continue to respond to our state of the art end-of-life care continuum with words of gratitude for the compassion, support, comfort and dignity extended to both them and their loved ones. It took the generosity and commitment many benefactors to make e Center possible. A special note of gratitude to the Capital Campaign Committee (listed on p. 6) for their leadership in achieving a $4 million renovation goal – and making a vision become reality.

is Report to Benefactors truly reflects the virtue of generosity, the act of freely giving without expecting anything in return. e recipients of such goodness – more than 8,500 patients and their families served by Family Hospice and Palliative Care between 2007 and 2009 – may never have had the opportunity to express their gratitude. It is our privilege to do so on their behalf.

anks to your kind support, many patients felt the relaxing touch of a massage therapist for the first time. And they did not forget the experience. Complimentary massages were among the most sought aer service requested by patients. More than $32,000 annually was spent on providing this comfort. Maureen Haggarty, Ph.D. Some of our patients were without insurance. Such was the case of the first patient who was admitted to our Center for Compassionate Care Inpatient Unit in 2007. A 22-year-old woman was able to be a just a mom to her young son, all because donations help to defray costs to economically distressed, qualified persons. is young mother represents hundreds of patients who received first-class, end-of-life care because of you.

Every month new volunteers bring their time and talent to Family Hospice. eir training is necessary to assure privacy and to provide the best care possible. Your donations have helped to build the skills of 400 hospice volunteers.

Whether you contributed by way of memorial or tributary gis, the Holiday Jon Allegretti, Chair Dove appeal, Memorial River Walk, Golf Benefit, gis of stock, United Way pledges, community organization programs, small business events or grants, your generosity supports 18 Family Hospice programs, from Pediatric Palliative Care to Operation Respect for Veterans.

With you, Family Hospice can envision a future of expanded outreach. Our new Future Fund will support program development, capital upkeep and educational growth. A strong Future Fund assures that the services we provide today will be available in decades to come.

Our greatest memory of our time with Family Hospice was the beautiful way in which the staff recognized our parents’ 60th anniversary. e staff could not have done a more loving act than the way they celebrated with our parents that day...it was such a happy time to talk with our parents about the memories of their 60 years together. each year people ask how they may give back to our non-profit organization. they have seen their loved one comforted and they know the value of programs that support caregivers. there are multiple ways in which anyone may contribute to family Hospice and palliative care:

1. Tell others about us. Word of mouth is the best reference. if you are familiar with our services, please take the time to tell others about our 24/7 services, clinical staff, caregiver support, and outreach to grieving children.

2. let us be your charity of choice. Designate family Hospice and palliative care in the obituary of your loved one, or choose us when you select a “charity of choice” to remember someone. We have beautiful, colorful sympathy cards that you can send to the family. the cards are free.

3. Attend our special events. 2011 marks the 24th annual Golf benefit held in May. the day includes lunch, refreshments on the course, sit-down bbQ dinner and skill prizes. our annual Memorial River Walk, held in october, is a family event in which hundreds of luminarias line the 1.5-mile trail. children under 12 walk free.

4. consider the future fund. a gift to our future fund will help family Hospice and palliative care to provide programs to patients and their families in decades to come. bequests, gifts of stock, cash contributions, real estate or other property, charitable gift annuities and life insurance may be used to support the future fund.

5. participate in our holiday appeal. thousands of white doves adorn Memorial trees at malls throughout Western pennsylvania between mid- november and late December. each dove has a tag with the name of someone to be remembered.
