BACKGROUND Preliminary work for the Lake Plan began in 2012 when the Malcolm Ardoch Lakes Association executive were asked for information related to the water quality of the two lakes. Some information was available through the Ministry of the Environment Lakes Partner Program due to the efforts of Ron Higgins for Malcolm and Ruth Cooper for Ardoch Lake who conducted water sampling to provide Secchi data. A second source was the five-year sampling rotation conducted by Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority. The implications of water quality and water levels initiated discussions about the need for consistent monitoring on the lakes. A Committee was formed under the leadership of Ron Higgins and topics beyond water quality were identified. A land development proposal for Ardoch Lake became an urgent matter and the Lake Plan was delayed.

Contemporary newspapers were scanned to obtain a chronicle of the signi• ficant sporting developments and events during the period between the first Fraser River gold rush of 18 58 and the completion of the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway in 188 5. During this period, it is apparent that certain sports facilitated a rapid expansion of activities when the railway brought thousands of new settlers to the province in the closing years of the century.

I’m the Digital Services Librarian at Bridgewater State University. As part of our ongoing and newly-founded Oral History Project, this is recording number two with some of our noted alumni from the 1960s and 1970. I’m sitting here with Bill Clifford, Charlie Worden, Jim Tartari and Mike Hughes. All alumni and participants in the football program during the years that they were here. I’d like to just start by asking everybody to go around the table and introduce yourselves, where are you from, and what year did you graduate. BC: I’m Bill Clifford. I’m from Brockton. I played from ’64 to ’67. Captain of the team in ’67. And graduated, of course, in ’68. CW: Charlie Worden, originally from Newton. I live in Rehoboth now. I taught in Easton for thirty-five years. I’m retired. I played with Bill in his last two years. I credit Bill and all the players in those two years as turning the program around. I try to speak about annually -- for my fallen roommate and teammate, Tommy Cook, at the Alumni Banquet. That’s seemingly the main point of my little speech that I give before I give out the award [editor’s note: the Tom Cook Award is given annually to honor an exceptional senior football player] about how football actually changed the face of the campus, especially starting in those two years that I played.

  • The Wonder Women: Understanding Feminism in Cosplay Performance
THE WONDER WOMEN: UNDERSTANDING FEMINISM IN COSPLAY PERFORMANCE by AMBER ROSE GRISSOM B.A. Anthropology University of Central Florida, 2015 B.A. History University of Central Florida, 2015 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Summer Term 2019 © 2019 Amber Rose Grissom ii ABSTRACT Feminism conjures divisive and at times conflicting thoughts and feelings in the current political climate in the United States. For some, Wonder Woman is a feminist icon, for her devotion to truth, justice, and equality. In recent years, Wonder Woman has become successful in the film industry, and this is reflected by the growing community of cosplayers at comic book conventions. In this study, I examine gender performativity, gender identity, and feminism from the perspective of cosplayers of Wonder Woman. I collected ethnographic data using participant observation and semi-structured interviews with cosplayers at comic book conventions in Florida, Georgia, and Washington, about their experiences in their Wonder Woman costumes. I found that many cosplayers identified with Wonder Woman both in their own personalities and as a feminist icon, and many view Wonder Woman as a larger role model to all people, not just women and girls. The narratives in this study also show cosplay as a form of escapism. Finally, I found that Wonder Woman empowers cosplayers at the individual level but can be envisioned as a force at a wider social level. I conclude that Wonder Woman is an important and iconic figure for understanding the dynamics of culture in the United States.
