Jahrhunderts Danielle BUSCHINGER Traditionell gliedert man die Epik des deutschen Mittelalters in (1) „frühhöfische Epik“ (1170-1190), deren Hauptvertreter der Straßburger Alexander, Eilharts von Oberg Tristrant, Graf Rudolf, Heinrichs von Veldeke Eneasroman sind, (2) „hochhöfische Epik“ (1170-1210), mit Hartmann von Aue (Erec, Der Arme Heinrich, Gregorius, Iwein), Gottfried von Straßburg (Tristan und Isolde), Wolfram von Eschenbach (Parzival, Titurel, Willehalm), (3) „späthöfische Epik“ (1210-1300), unter deren Vertretern ich Wigalois des Wirnt von Gravenberg, die Fortsetzungen von Gottfrieds Tristanroman, die Krône des Heinrich von dem Türlin, Rudolf von Ems, den Jüngeren Titurel des Albrecht, der sich die Maske des berühmten Wolfram angelegt hat, Konrad von Würzburg, den Stricker und den Pleier aufzählen möchte, sowie Lanzelet des Ulrich von Zatzikhoven. Während die erstgenannten zum großen Teil und die zweiterwähnten Dichter ausschließlich auf französische Texte zurückgriffen, die sie ins Deutsche übertrugen bzw. adaptierten, knüpften die meisten deutschen Dichter der dritten Generation an Dichtern der ersten oder zweiten Generation an. Occidental Regionalism in the Nibelungenlied: Medieval Paradigms of Foreignness

Stephen Jaeger, Chair Professor Marianne Kalinke Associate Professor Frederick Schwink Associate Professor Laurie Johnson Associate Professor Carol Symes ii ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the issue of foreignness in the Nibelungenlied, raising questions about the nature, and crossing, of intra-Christian borders within the text that separate customs, practices, and worldviews. It analyzes cultural alterity and its attendant outcomes in the first half of the Nibelungenlied using concepts from anthropology and cultural and sociological theory. The dissertation argues that multiple levels of foreignness, as defined by the philosopher Bernd Waldenfels, separate characters in the Nibelungenlied. Despite their varying origins, these instances of alienation all have a common result: a lack of a complete picture of the world for individual characters and the prevention of close human connections that would allow intentions and motivations to be divined. Characters’ imperfect understandings of their surroundings are fostered by their foreignness and drive many of the conflicts in the text, including Siegfried’s verbal clash with the Burgundians when he first arrives in Worms, Brünhild’s entanglement with Gunther and Siegfried, and the argument between Kriemhild and Brünhild. In addition, this dissertation argues that the constant interaction with the foreign undergone by the court at Worms leads to a change in its culture away from one which sees appearance and reality as one and the same to one that takes advantage of the power granted by a newfound ability to separate Sein from Schein. -

The Heuristic Value of German Literature: The Eternal Plea for the Relevance of Medieval and Early Modern Literature from a Practical/Pedagogical Perspective Albrecht Classen Introduction1 The question of what the meaning of the Humanities might be for the current student generation continues to vex us all. We can all try to look backwards and explain the significance of past literary documents as being contributions to the canon of all literary studies. That would be the answer of an archivist. We can also try to understand literary texts from the pre- modern period as expressions of the overarching endeavor to make sense of human life, to figure out the meaning of human life, and to explain the purpose of our existence. At first look, this seems to be quite self-evident, but at a closer analysis we can realize how much both medieval and modern literary manifestations are simply waiting for us to gain deeper understanding of human interactions, conflicts, and cooperation. This article continues with previous efforts to make sense of medieval narratives and to demonstrate how much they can serve as literary expressions for the further explorations of human identity, ethics, morality, and religion. The central argument for the humanistic value of literature, as developed here, is predicated on practical experiences in teaching the history of German literature and has profited from numerous critical reflections on modern challenges to our discipline. The object was to learn to what extent the effort to think one’s own history can free thought from what it silently thinks, and so enable it to think differently. – Michel Foucault, The Use of Pleasure In these words from the introduction to the second volume of his history of sexuality,1 Foucault suggests that a certain kind of engagement with the past might enable us to think differently. The volume that follows, a history of sexuality, would represent then an effort to engage with the past in a way that might enable us to think differently about sexuality. Writing at the end of the twelfth century, Hartmann von Aue does something similar. He uses the Arthurian past to enable him to think differently about what he calls love but which includes much of what we would call sexuality. In an attempt to make this claim plausible, I will first review some medieval views about the use of history and then explore the extent to which Hartmann, in Iwein, claims to be writing a history. Second, I will try to show how, in both Erec and Iwein, Hartmann uses the Arthurian past to think about sexuality in ways that might provoke his readers and auditors to think differently. -

Ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts betrachtete man sie jedoch als eigenständige Dichtung. Danach verlor sie an Bedeutung. Im Gegensatz zum Nibelungenlied gibt es von der Klage deutlich weniger Ausgaben, insbesondere seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Erst 2013 wurden Nibelungenlied und Klage in einer Edition der Handschrift B einschließlich neuhochdeutscher Übersetzung wieder vereint. Die Handschriften und das Verhältnis der Klage zum Nibelungenlied Die Rezeptionsgeschichte des Nibelungenlieds und der Klage beginnt eigentlich bereits Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts, als nämlich die ersten Abschriften vom (unbekannten) Original des Nibelungenlieds angefertigt wurden. Unter den derzeit 36 bekannten Handschriften befinden sich 11 mehr oder weniger vollständige Codices. Von denen enthalten 9 die Klage, nämlich die Handschriften A, B, C, D, J und a, b, d, h. Daraus lässt sich schließen, dass die Klage zum Nibelungenlied gehört. Diese Gemeinsamkeit wird auch besonders dadurch deutlich, dass allein bei 6 Handschriften (A, B, C, D, J, a) die Klage auf derselben Seite beginnt, auf der das Lied endet. -

The Nibelungenlied at the Court of Burgundy, Kriemhild, the Virginal
The Nibelungenlied At the court of Burgundy, Kriemhild, the virginal sister of King Gunther and his brothers Gernot and Giselher, has a dream of a falcon that is killed by two eagles. Her mother interprets this to mean that Kriemhild’s future husband will die a violent death, and Kriemhild consequently resolves to remain unmarried. Siegfried is the crown prince of Xanten. In an introductory narrative, he slays a dragon and bathes in its blood, rendering his skin sword-proof, save one small spot which the dragon’s blood didn’t cover; he also obtains a large treasure, after killing two brothers who had drawn him into the struggle over how to divide the wealth between themselves. Siegfried arrives in Worms with the hopes of wooing Kriemhild. Upon his arrival, Hagen tells Gunther about Siegfried’s youthful exploits that involved winning a treasure and lands from a pair of brothers, Nibelung and Schilbung, whom Siegfried had killed when he was unable to divide the treasure between them and, almost incidentally, the killing of a dragon. After killing the dragon, he had bathed in its blood rendering him invulnerable. Unfortunately for Siegfried a leaf fell onto his back from a linden tree as he was bathing and the tiny patch of skin that it covered did not come into contact with the dragon’s blood, so that Siegfried remains vulnerable in that one spot. In spite of Hagen’s threatening stories about his youth, the Burgundians welcome him, but do not allow him to meet the princess. Disappointed, he nonetheless remains in Worms and helps Gunther defeat the invading Saxons. -

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract This article discusses a number of fidelity-testing tales and episodes, focusing on the function of characters and narrators who provide interpretations of the outcome of the tests. The testing of a series of characters takes place during a social gathering, involves a testing device, most often a mantle or a drinking horn, and discloses infidelity or other shortcomings. In most tales, ethical interpreters confront the spectators with social criticism and moral lessons, either seriously, as in Ulrich’s Lanzelet and Albrecht’s Ju¨ngerer Titurel, or humorously, as in the Manteau mal taille´. In Heinrich von dem Tu¨rlin’s Diu Croˆne, however, the interpreters are innocuous. Kei the seneschal and the narrator participate in an intratextual as well as literary game. Their comments are meant to amuse other characters, and to chal- lenge the literary expertise of the listeners to Heinrich’s romance. Keywords Medieval literature Á Arthurian fiction Á Fidelity-testing motif Á Diu Croˆne Introduction One of the English texts which have come down to us in the famous Percy Folio, the mid-seventeenth century codex acquired by the antiquarian bishop Thomas Percy (1729–1811) and now in the British Library (Additional MS 27879), is the ballad The Boy and the Mantle. In just under two hundred lines, this late-fifteenth-century narrative manages to relate a triple testing of the Arthurian community.
