Stephen Jaeger, Chair Professor Marianne Kalinke Associate Professor Frederick Schwink Associate Professor Laurie Johnson Associate Professor Carol Symes ii ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the issue of foreignness in the Nibelungenlied, raising questions about the nature, and crossing, of intra-Christian borders within the text that separate customs, practices, and worldviews. It analyzes cultural alterity and its attendant outcomes in the first half of the Nibelungenlied using concepts from anthropology and cultural and sociological theory. The dissertation argues that multiple levels of foreignness, as defined by the philosopher Bernd Waldenfels, separate characters in the Nibelungenlied. Despite their varying origins, these instances of alienation all have a common result: a lack of a complete picture of the world for individual characters and the prevention of close human connections that would allow intentions and motivations to be divined. Characters’ imperfect understandings of their surroundings are fostered by their foreignness and drive many of the conflicts in the text, including Siegfried’s verbal clash with the Burgundians when he first arrives in Worms, Brünhild’s entanglement with Gunther and Siegfried, and the argument between Kriemhild and Brünhild. In addition, this dissertation argues that the constant interaction with the foreign undergone by the court at Worms leads to a change in its culture away from one which sees appearance and reality as one and the same to one that takes advantage of the power granted by a newfound ability to separate Sein from Schein. -
The Heuristic Value of German Literature: the Eternal Plea for the Relevance of Medieval and Early Modern Literature from a Practical/Pedagogical Perspective

The Heuristic Value of German Literature: The Eternal Plea for the Relevance of Medieval and Early Modern Literature from a Practical/Pedagogical Perspective Albrecht Classen Introduction1 The question of what the meaning of the Humanities might be for the current student generation continues to vex us all. We can all try to look backwards and explain the significance of past literary documents as being contributions to the canon of all literary studies. That would be the answer of an archivist. We can also try to understand literary texts from the pre- modern period as expressions of the overarching endeavor to make sense of human life, to figure out the meaning of human life, and to explain the purpose of our existence. At first look, this seems to be quite self-evident, but at a closer analysis we can realize how much both medieval and modern literary manifestations are simply waiting for us to gain deeper understanding of human interactions, conflicts, and cooperation. This article continues with previous efforts to make sense of medieval narratives and to demonstrate how much they can serve as literary expressions for the further explorations of human identity, ethics, morality, and religion. The central argument for the humanistic value of literature, as developed here, is predicated on practical experiences in teaching the history of German literature and has profited from numerous critical reflections on modern challenges to our discipline. Ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts betrachtete man sie jedoch als eigenständige Dichtung. Danach verlor sie an Bedeutung. Im Gegensatz zum Nibelungenlied gibt es von der Klage deutlich weniger Ausgaben, insbesondere seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Erst 2013 wurden Nibelungenlied und Klage in einer Edition der Handschrift B einschließlich neuhochdeutscher Übersetzung wieder vereint. Die Handschriften und das Verhältnis der Klage zum Nibelungenlied Die Rezeptionsgeschichte des Nibelungenlieds und der Klage beginnt eigentlich bereits Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts, als nämlich die ersten Abschriften vom (unbekannten) Original des Nibelungenlieds angefertigt wurden. Unter den derzeit 36 bekannten Handschriften befinden sich 11 mehr oder weniger vollständige Codices. Von denen enthalten 9 die Klage, nämlich die Handschriften A, B, C, D, J und a, b, d, h. Daraus lässt sich schließen, dass die Klage zum Nibelungenlied gehört. Diese Gemeinsamkeit wird auch besonders dadurch deutlich, dass allein bei 6 Handschriften (A, B, C, D, J, a) die Klage auf derselben Seite beginnt, auf der das Lied endet. -

Davidson, Advisor Professor Anna Grotans Professor Katra Byram Copyright by Kevin Alan Richards 2012 Abstract The criminal legacy of National Socialism cast a shadow of perpetration and collaboration upon the post-war image of the German soldier. These negative associations impeded Helmut Kohl’s policy to normalize the state use of the military in the mid-eighties, which prompted a politically driven public relations campaign to revise the image of the German soldier. This influx of new narratives produced a dynamic interplay between political rhetoric and literature that informed and challenged the intuitive representations of the German soldier that anchor positions of German national identity in public culture. This study traces that interplay via the positioning of those representations in relation to prototypes of villains, victims, and heroes in varying rescue narrative accounts in three genre of written culture in Germany since 1985: that is, since the overt attempts to change the function of the Bundeswehr in the context of (West) German normalization began to succeed. These genre are (1) security publications (and their political and academic legitimizations), (2) popular fantasy literature, and (3) texts in the tradition of the Vergangenheitsbewältigung. I find that the accounts presented in the government’s White Papers and by Kohl, Nolte, and Hillgruber in the mid-1980s gathered momentum over the course of three decades and dislodged the dominant association of the German soldier with the villainy of National Socialism. -

My expectations were very neutral before reading. Hartman has recently suggested that the late Old English poem The Battle of Brunanburh may have used ponderous verse— types in much the same way , It is not so jumpy that it puts off an informed reader. His use of this device is much like in the Fall of Arthur, though in this poem he uses it slightly less frequently, 26 and crossed alliteration is somewhat rarer in general. Neckel, Gustav, ed. Grimhild advises her daughter to mourn no longer, commenting that Brynhild is dead and that Gudrun is still beautiful. Which I don't have, since my education lacked things like the "Nibelungenlied", which is apparently similar. Some of the differences and similarities between Gudrun and Kriemhild in the Scandinavian and continental Germanic traditions can be seen in the following two stanzas taken from original sources. Some of the biggest books out this fall promise to be epics full of magic, adventure, However, type E was nowhere near so rare for Tolkien as for the Anglo— Saxons, and even if he were not freer with anacrusis more generally, it would not be surprising that he would feel more comfortable using it with this rhythmic pattern. -

Oral Tradition, 1/2 (1986): 398-445 The Oral Tradition and Middle High German Literature Franz H. Bäuml Serious concern with the oral tradition as it existed before and side by side with Middle High German written literature is linked in Middle High German studies to the introduction of the theory of oral- formulaic composition (henceforth referred to as the Theory).1 True, the existence of an oral tradition has never seriously been doubted, but, beyond rather general notions of recurrent structural elements and hypotheses of a development of oral narrative texts in verse from song to epic,2 hypotheses which saw the oral text for the most part through the spectacles of literacy as a basically stable unit subject to alteration and adulteration, the mechanics of an oral tradition played no role in research concerned with Middle High German literature. And to this day we know practically nothing about the oral performances of the vernacular lyric of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.3 Research on the oral tradition of epic poetry and its relationship to the written transmission, however, received more than a negligible impetus from the Theory, despite its general rejection, particularly on the part of German germanists.4 In this survey of the impact of the Theory on Middle High German studies, I shall therefore neither pass over the sins of the representatives of the Theory in silence, nor suppress my own view that the application of the Theory, amended and stripped of its early enthusiasms, has set in motion a current of research on the interrelationships between literacy and orality which promises to illuminate more than one dark corner of literary and social history.5 The initial approaches to Middle High German texts with the concepts of the Theory were rather scattered. -

Nibelungenlied Erste Seite der Handschrift C des Nibelungenlieds (um 1220) Darstellung aus der Handschrift K des Nibelungenlieds (1480–90) Das Nibelungenlied ist ein mittelalterliches Heldenepos. Es entstand zu Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts und wurde in der damaligen Volkssprache Mittelhochdeutsch aufgeschrieben. Der Titel, unter dem es seit seiner Wiederentdeckung Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts bekannt ist, leitet sich von der Schlusszeile in einer der beiden Haupttextfassungen, *C, ab: hie hât daz mære ein ende: daz ist der Nibelunge liet („hier hat die Geschichte ein Ende: das ist ‚das Lied von den Nibelungen‘“). Allerdings muss man beachten, dass „liet“ im Mittelhochdeutschen nicht als „Lied“ in unserem Sinne zu verstehen ist, sondern „Strophen“ oder „Epos“ bedeuten kann. Die dem (verlorenen) Original näher stehende Fassung *B (Haupthandschrift in St. Gallen) endet diz ist der Nibelunge NOT. Angehängt an das Nibelungenlied ist in den mittelalterlichen Handschriften eine formal eigenständige Erzählung, die das Geschehen fortzusetzen und zu rekapitulieren scheint, die „Klage“. Ein historischer Kern der Sage ist die Zerschlagung des Burgunderreiches im Raum von Worms in der Spätantike (um 436) durch den römischen Heermeister Aëtius mit Hilfe hunnischer Hilfstruppen. -
