Finally, I offer deep admiration to all of the musicians and artists using their gifts and talents to make a peaceful and beautiful world now and for future generations. v ABSTRACT This writing argues that the arts go beyond dialogue to affect and enhance interfaith peacebuilding, understanding, and cooperation. My research focuses on the three Abrahamic Faiths, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, with an in-depth analysis of music and peacebuilding amidst Jews and Arabs in Israel. Specifically, I discuss the use of music as a bridge of understanding between cultures and share examples of other types of art as well. This research also adds to the limited amount of theory, analysis, and writing in the subject area of peacebuilding and the arts. Section One introduces the terms and ideas surrounding the topics of interfaith, peacebuilding, identity, diversity, pluralism, and unity. Section Two includes a literature review conducted in this area of study. I also share art and interviews from artists who create peacebuilding art and music. In Section Three, I describe the qualitative research method “Portraiture” and how I used it as a framework for my fieldwork during summer 2013 in Israel. Images and information from Jewish and Arab artists, musicians, and activists serve as visual references in this section. Section Four includes a historical theological perspective of interfaith peacebuilding. I analyze the theology of Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1463), whose writings explore a medieval understanding of interfaith peacebuilding and cooperation. Specifically, I focus on his ideas surrounding concepts of God, interreligious relationships, and music. In Section Five, I describe my musical artifact and how my fieldwork and research are expressed in this artifact. Section Six includes details of the songwriting, production, and overall process involved in the creation of my artifact. Finally, Section Seven, includes information on further areas for research and offers my concluding thoughts and reflections. vi SECTION I CONCEPTUAL

The emphasis of Sufism is less on external rituals and more on the inward journey. The seeker searches within to make oneself Insaan-e-Kamil, or a perfect human being on God’s path. The origin of the word Sufism is in tasawwuf, the path followed by Sufis to reach God. Some believe it comes from the word suf (wool), referring to the coarse woollen fabric worn by early Sufis. Sufiya also means purified or chosen as a friend of God. Most Sufis favour the origin of the word from safa or purity; therefore, a Sufi is one who is purified from worldly defilements. The essence of Sufism, as of most religions, is to reach God, or truth or absolute reality. Characteristics of Sufism The path of Sufism is a path of self-annihilation in God, also called afanaa , which means to seek permanence in God. A Sufi strives to relinquish worldly and even other worldly aims. The objective of Sufism is to acquire knowledge of God and achieve wisdom. Sufis avail every act of God as an opportunity to “see” God. They were against formal worship and rigidity in religion. Like the 1 Bhakti saints, the Sufis too interpreted religion as ‘love of god’ and service of humanity. Sufis believe that there is only one God and that all people are the children of God. They also believe that to love one’s fellow men is to love God and that different religions are different ways to reach God.

    Journal of American Studies of Turkey 25 (2007) : 105-110 Reflections on Movement: New Installations in Historical Dervish Sites of İstanbul Jeffrey Baykal Rollins “Travel is not a new phenomenon in the history of dervishes rather it can be understood as a continuing practice where movement in itself is central.” Bente Nikolaisen Considerable attention has been given of late to many Asian, Middle Eastern, and Near Eastern artists such as Shazia Sikander, Cai Guo-Qiang, and Shirin Neshat, who have brought to the United States art forms rooted in distinctly Eastern traditions. Numerous articles, exhibitions, panels, and documentaries have highlighted these artists’ integration of traditional techniques such as miniature painting, calligraphy, and ukiyo-e prints into contemporary American art-making practices. By focusing however, on what these Eastern artists have brought to the United States, this attention has overlooked that which is being sought by an equally significant migration of American artists going in the opposite direction. I am among these contemporary American artists who have sought to connect to a traditional art making practice beyond the borders of my own country. My current series of multimedia projects are site-specific to historical sacred spaces in Istanbul, including the two oldest Sufi dervish lodges in the city: the Kadirihane and the Galata Mevlevihane Museum. As it has been for many pilgrims over the centuries, my arrival at these sites is also a form of pilgrimage, and the projects I am creating are reflections of that particular response. This work is something I could not do in the same way in the United States, for I create from within these spaces themselves, installations that are intimately bound to the iconographies and shifting functions of those sites throughout their histories.

Since 1925, the Turkish government has relentlessly struggled to control Islamic influences in society and to channel people’s devotion to the memory of Kemal Ataturk (d. 1938) and his secular ideology. This article argues that by restructuring the layout and presentation of the tomb complex of Rumi, and putting the sacred space through the process of museumification, the Turkish state has attempted to regulate the place in order to control people’s experience of the sacred.

Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (May 2015) Copyright © Mansoor Behnam, 2015 Abstract This research-creation discovers the connection between what Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari termed as the Univocity of Being, and the Sufi and pantheistic concept of Unity of Being (wahdat al-wujud) founded by the Islamic philosopher/mystic Ibn al-‘Arabī(A.H. 560- 638/A.D. 1165-1240). I use the decolonizing historiography of the concept of univocity of being carried out by the scholar of Media Art, and Islamic Thoughts Laura U. Marks. According to Marks’ historiography, it was the Persian Muslim Polymath Abu ‘Ali al-Husayn ibn Sînâ (980-1037) who first initiated the concept of haecceity (thisness)--the basis of the univocity of being. The thesis examines transformative experimental cinema and video art from a mystical philosophical perspective (Sufism), and by defying binaries of East/West, it moves beyond naïve cosmopolitanism, to nuanced understanding of themes such as presence, proximity, self, transcendence, immanence, and becoming, in media arts. The thesis tackles the problem of Islamic aniconism, nonrepresentability, and inexpressibility of the ineffable; as it is reflected in the mystical/paradoxical concept of the mystical Third Script (or the Unreadable Script) suggested by Shams-i-Tabrīzī (1185- 1248), the spiritual master of Mawlana Jalal ad-Dīn Muhhammad Rūmī (1207-1273). I argue that the Third Script provides a platform for the investigation of the implications of the language, silence, unsayable, and non-representation.

This painting which is saturated with mystery and secrecy is in close relation with Iranian mysticism. The present article was an attempt to investigate the comparative relationship between spiral forms in Sufi spiral dance (Sama: the Arabic word Raqs) which takes its name from the order of the whirling dervishes in Konya where Mawlawī (Rumi) used to practice it with his disciples and Persian Islamic paintings. To do so, the quality and quantity of spiral and whirling movements was scrutinized in both of these art forms. The present research employed both the library research and content analysis to collect the data and analyze them, respectively. The paintings of famous Iranians in the Islamic era, especially those of Kamala Din Behzad (a famous painter of Heart school) were meticulously surveyed and compared with the principles of Sufi dance and the results revealed that Iranian artists and mystics have taken inspiration from each other and one of the common points between their art forms is “the movement”. The results also showed that the spiral Iranian miniature art form named Arabesque (Islamic art) involves the development of the movement and rotation of dancers seen in Sufi dancing.
