Prof. Dr. Mustafa Şen February 2016, 232 pages Established as a Sufi order in central Anatolia following the death of Rumi, Mevlevi Sufism has influenced the spirituality of people for over 8 centuries. Having strong ties with the Ottoman state, Mevlevi Sufism gradually moved from a Sufi order into a historicity subject to museumification, cultural heritage of national and international value, and stage performance for tourist attraction. This transition was triggered by the law no. 677 implemented in 1925 for the closure of Sufi lodges and convents. Bringing the dervish lineage and Sufi service to an end, the law also played role on the contemporary discussions regarding Mevlevi Sufism. While practitioners of Mevlevi music reject a Mevlevi identity, the state embraces Mevlevi Sufism with a claim of state visibility in issues like cultural heritage and spiritual tourism. This duality between the state and practitioners on the one hand reflect the conflicting modes of spirituality within the order, and on the other hand affect the contemporary controversies concerning the claim of conserving the centuries old tradition. The data collected through an ethnographic field research of 15 months among Sufi circles and performances in different parts of Turkey and Europe reveal that state institutions, non-governmental foundations, iv entrepreneurs, stage performers and the audience as actors are politically involved in the field of struggle for power in Bourdieusian sense over the sema field. The interplays of power reflect the circularity of Mevlevi Sufism which is influenced by even the earliest religious practices and is embodied in the circular movement of whirling dervishes. Müziğini icra edenler Mevlevi kimliğini reddederken devlet Mevleviliği kültürel miras ve manevi turizm düzeyinde kucaklamaktadır. İcracılar ve devlet arasındaki bu ikilik geleneği muhafaza etme iddiasına ilişkin uzlaşmazlıklara da işaret etmektedir. Türkiye ve Avrupa’nın farklı yerlerinde 15 ay süren etnografik saha araştırmasıyla derlenen veri, devlet kurumlarının, vakıf ve derneklerin, girişimcilerin, sahne sanatçılarının ve seyircilerin sema meydanındaki Bourdieucu iktidar mücadelesine katıldıklarını ortaya koymaktadır. Söz konusu iktidar etkileşimleri, Mevleviliğin en eski dini pratiklerden etkilenmiş olan ve semazenlerin devirlerinde vücut bulan döngüselliğini yansıtmaktadır. Elif Shafak was one of the fellows in residence for the 2002–2003 academic year. Although she came to the Center as a scholar continuing her work on gender and sexuality in the social sciences, a visit to the offices of Meridians during our Fall Open House revealed that she is an accomplished and award-winning novelist in her home country of Turkey. Her first novel, Pinhan, published in 1998, was awarded the Mevlana Prize in Turkey—a recognition given to the best works in mystical / transcendental literature. The novel tells the story of a hermaphrodite mystic—a little-known but revered tradition inside the Sufi orders. Pinhan explores the question of identity at the nexus of physical and metaphysical definitions. Her second novel, The Mirrors of the City, is about a Sephardic Jew who moves to seventeenth-century Istanbul after being expelled from Spain and centers on the themes of estrangement and deterritorialization.

Arsheed Ahmad Malik** [email protected] Abstract. Sufism is derived from the Arabic word “Suf” which means “wool”, refer to the garments worn by early Sufis. Some says it is derived from “Suffa” or “bench” referring to a group of poor Muslims living at the time with Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H), known as the people of bench. There are different views about Sufism when it was came into existence, most scholars are of the opinion that the term Sufism was first coined by a Sufi known as Abu Hashim Kufi. Whether the theories are correct or not but the fact that Sufism is not something that can be separated from Islam, although the word may have used little later. After Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the imams and their sheikhs spread the knowledge of Sufism. During the sixth and seventh century of the Islamic era, the way Sufism reached the height of its popularity, and Sufis like Ibn Arabi and Rumi wrote important books about the mysteries of gnosis and the journey towards god. My paper deal with how in modern world we are so busy that we can perceive and analyze are enough to be called truth. On the other side we forget to solve the mysteries of life which occur in our day to day life, as Sufism has provided guidance to mankind in all ages and shall continue to do so.

    The 21st Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain and Germany Submitted by Caroline Neumueller to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Arab and Islamic Studies October 2012 1 2 Abstract The dissertation focuses on the conversion experiences and individual processes of twenty-four native British Muslim converts and fifty-two native German Muslim converts, based on personal interviews and completed questionnaires between 2008 and 2010. It analyses the occurring similarities and differences among British and German Muslim converts, and puts them into relation to basic Islamic requirements of the individual, and in the context of their respective social settings. Accordingly, the primary focus is placed on the changing behavioural norms in the individual process of religious conversion concerning family and mixed-gender relations and the converts’ attitudes towards particularly often sensitive and controversial topics. My empirical research on this phenomenon was guided by many research questions, such as: What has provoked the participants to convert to Islam, and what impact and influence does their conversion have on their (former and primarily) non-Muslim environment? Do Muslim converts tend to distance themselves from their former lifestyles and change their social behavioural patterns, and are the objectives and purposes that they see themselves having in the given society directed to them being: bridge-builders or isolators? The topic of conversion to Islam, particularly within Western non-Muslim societies is a growing research phenomenon. At the same time, there has only been little contribution to the literature that deals with comparative analyses of Muslim converts in different countries.
