Why Stockton Folk Dance Camp Still Produces a Syllabus
Syllabus of Dance Descriptions STOCKTON FOLK DANCE CAMP – 2018 FINAL In Memoriam Rickey Holden – 1926-2017 Rickey was a square and folk dance teacher, researcher, caller, record producer, and author. Rickey was largely responsible for spreading recreational international folk dancing throughout Europe and Asia. Rickey learned ballroom dance in Austin Texas in 1935 and 1936. He started square and contra dancing in Vermont in 1939. He taught international folk dance all over Europe and Asia, eventually making his home base in Brussels. He worked with Folkraft Records in the early years. He taught at Stockton Folk Dance Camp in the 1940s and 50s, plus an additional appearance in 1992. In addition to dozens of books about square dancing, he also authored books on Israeli, Turkish, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Greek, and Macedonian dance. SYRTAKI Greek PRONUNCIATION
SYRTAKI Greek PRONUNCIATION: seer-TAH-kee TRANSLATION: Little dragging dance SOURCE: Dick Oakes learned this dance in the Greek community of Los Angeles. Athan Karras, a prominent Greek dance researcher, also has taught Syrtaki to folk dancers in the United States, as have many other teachers of Greek dance. BACKGROUND: The Syrtaki, or Sirtaki, was the name given to the combination of various Hasapika (or Hassapika) dances, both in style and the variation of tempo, after its popularization in the motion picture Alexis Zorbas (titled Zorba the Greek in America). The Syrtaki is danced mainly in the taverns of Greece with dances such as the Zeybekiko (Zeimbekiko), the Tsiftetelli, and the Karsilamas. It is a combination of either a slow hasapiko and fast hasapiko, or a slow hasapiko, hasaposerviko, and fast hasapiko. It is typical for the musicians to "wake things up" after a slow or heavy (vari or argo) hasapiko with a medium and / or fast Hasapiko. The name "Syrtaki" is a misnomer in that it is derived from the most common Greek dance "Syrtos" and this name is a recent invention. These "butcher dances" spread throughout the Balkans and the Near East and all across the Aegean islands, and entertained a great popularity. The origins of the dance are traced to Byzantium, but the Argo Hasapiko is an evolved idiom by Aegean fisherman and their languid lifestyle. The name "Syrtaki" is now embedded as a dance form (meaning "little Syrtos," though it is totally unlike any Syrto dance), but its international fame has made it a hallmark of Greek dancing. -

The centennial celebration will not only be limited to the municipality but will extend to include the whole of the city, whose age is much greater. The municipal council recognised that its centennial could be an opportunity to highlight the city of Ramallah as a distinct Palestinian city – politically, economically, and culturally – and to invite tourism and investors. Work on the Municipality of Ramallah Centennial Project began with efforts to put the city on the world map. To achieve the goal of transforming Ramallah into a model city in the region, and a city of international calibre, it was imperative that Ramallah experiences a comprehensive renaissance. This renaissance intersects with the overall development plan of the Palestinian National Authority and serves to revive a city that has been deteriorating due to the effects of more than forty years of occupation. To achieve the dream, the municipality created a vision that addresses several tracks and covers all aspects of life. Each track includes ambitious projects and Programs that aim to transform Ramallah into a world-class city with distinction. This effort is closely linked to the municipality’s three- year strategic plan (2008–2010). -

Tuzovskii Candidate of the cultural studies, Chelyabinsk State Academy of Culture and Arts E-mail: [email protected] HISTORICAL CIRCUMSTANCES WHICH CAUSE SYNCRETISM AND CONVENTIONALISM OF THE CONTEMPORARY STATUS OF THE INFORMATION SOCIETY’S THEORY Abstract. The theory of the information society is the key sociological concept today. It’s a basis of the creation of state development plans and programs. However, dominating of the scientific concept for a long time causes negative trace on critical reception of it by new generations of researchers. That’s why the new view on the problem origin and evolution of the concept of the information society during the early stage. Author discovers syncretism and conventionalism of the singular social models of Modernity. It has a connection with 2 central ideas – the post-industrial and the information societies. First important aspect of the syncretism is congruence of attributes of different model of the contemporary society. Another one is in the unclear authorship of several concepts. For example, there are many problems with attempts to disclose real authorship such concepts as the post-industrial society, the information society, the network society. There is a problem of ideological and socio-cultural background of the main analytic and predictor concept of the contemporary society – the Information society. The author considers that this event was accompanied by positive and negative circumstances like the Information revolution, relatively bigger pluralism of the West society, the Cold war and many others. The most important factor which is influenced on the nature of the these sociological ideas, was a socialization of the information revolution’s consequences. -
