Religious Ideology and Discourse: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Marsiya-e-Hussain Snobra Rizwan Lecturer, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan Tariq Saeed Assisstant Professor, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan Ramna Fayyaz Lecturer, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan ABSTRACT This paper employs Fairclough’s framework of critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 2001; 2003) as a research tool to demonstrate how mourning discourse of marsiya manages to win favourite responses from Pakistani audiences by foregrounding certain linguistic conventions. The data comprising popular marsiyas are based on responses obtained through a small-scale survey and are analyzed from the perspective of ideology and emotive appeal embedded in discourse. The analysis illustrates that discourse conventions of marsiya—in addition to traditional commemoration of martyrdom of Imam Hussian—serve to elaborate, explain and disseminate religious doctrines in Pakistani Shi‘ah masses. Keywords: Marsiya, Critical Discourse Analysis, Ideology, Shiism 1. Introduction This paper provides a close study to examine the distinguishing features of marsiya-e-Hussain and the way discursive choices of certain transitivity features, figurative language and lyrical conventions serve to make it a distinct poetic genre of its own. Though marsiya recitation is taken to be a means of commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain; nevertheless, it means much more to Shi’ia community. Along with other mourning rituals, marsiya is considered to be a means of seeking waseela (mediation) from the saints, teaching and learning religious ideologies, seeking God’s pleasure and so on (‘Azadari; mourning for Imam Hussain’, 2009). All these objectives are achieved by following certain discourse conventions which in turn construct certain discursive reality and weigh heavily on the formation of distinctive opinion and religious ideology in Shi‘ah masses. -

Not only did the modernists, but also the traditional scholars joined his movement. -

The natural corollary of its origin and development brought about religo-cultural changes in Islam which might be different from the other part of Muslim world. Sufism has been explained by many people in different ways and infect is the purification of the heart and soul as prescribed in the holy Quran by God. They preach that we should burn our hearts in the memory of God. Our existence is from God which can only be comprehended with the help of blessing of a spiritual guide in the popular sense of the world. Sufism is the way which teaches us to think of God so much that we should forget our self. Sufism is the made of religious life in Islam in which the emphasis is placed, not on the performance of external ritual but on the activities of the inner-self’ in other words it signifies Islamic mysticism. Beside spirituality, the Sufi’s contributed in the promotion of performing art, particularly the music. Pakistan has been the center of attraction for the Sufi Saints who came from far-off areas like Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Arabia. The people warmly welcomes them, followed their traditions and preaching’s and even now they celebrates their anniversaries in the form of Urs. -

From the time of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r) to the time of Bayazid al- Bistami (r) it was called as-Siddiqiyya. From the time of Bayazid to the time of Sayyidina Abdul Khaliq al-Ghujdawani it was called at-Tayfuriyya. From the time of Sayyidina ‘Abdul Khaliq al-Ghujdawan to the time of Shah Naqshband it was called the Khwajaganiyya. From the time of Shah Naqshband through the time of Sayyidina Ubaidullah al-Ahrar and Sayyidina Ahmad Faruqi, it was called Naqshbandiyya. Naqshbandiyya means to “tie the Naqsh very well.” The Naqsh is the perfect engraving of Allah’s Name in the heart of the murid. From the time of Sayyidina Ahmad al-Faruqi to the time of Shaikh Khalid al-Baghdadi it was called Naqshbandi-Mujaddidiyya. From the time of Sayyidina Khalid al- Baghdadi until the time of Sayiddina Shaikh Ismail Shirwani it was called the Naqshbandiyya-Khalidiyya. From the time of Sayyidina Isma’il Shirwani until the time of Sayyidina Shaikh ‘Abdullah ad-Daghestani, it was called Naqshbandi-Daghestaniyya. And today it is known by the name Naqshbandiyya-Haqqaniyya. The founder of Pakistan Quaid e Azam Muhmmad Ali Jinnah gifted liberty to the minorities in Pakistan and constitution of Pakistan safeguards the fundamental rights of Non-Muslims. Non-Muslim Minorities in Pakistan (Sikhs, Hindus and Christians etc.) have awarded freedom to go their religious places for practicing their religious obligations. Government of Pakistan has established Evacuee Trust Property Board under Act No. XIII of 1975 (which was promulgated on 1st July 1974) for management, control and disposal of the Evacuee Trust properties all over Pakistan. Undoubtedly, Pakistan is a Muslim majority country with multi-religious and multi-sectarian population. Though, we keep hearing about events of inter and intra religious intolerance every now and then. This research papers gives a comprehensive detail about the interfaith harmony at Shrines in Pakistan in order to prove that all the news we are getting through print media, electronic media or social media about religious intolerance in Pakistan is only one side of picture. Withal throwing light on the interfaith harmonious culture at Shrines, it aims to explore the concept of religious harmony or interfaith harmony. This paper briefly encapsulates the background of different shrines in Pakistan and the communities visiting them. -
