NBCUniversal recognizes the value of Humber’s Media programs

When a successful corporation recognizes your program with a generous financial gift, you know you are on the right track.

NBCUniversal recently gave a substantial donation to Humber’s School of Media Studies & Information Technology. The gift was used to create four sophisticated sound editing suites as well as install updated software in two large media labs. This new technology gives students a real-world place to put into practice all they have learned in the classroom.

In addition to the practical benefits, Basil Guinane, associate dean, School of Media Studies & Information Technology says, “This donation says something very positive to our students about the future of our industry. It assures them they’re investing in a worthwhile endeavour.”

While not every corporation or business can give a major donation like NBCUniversal, Basil insists every contribution helps.

Financial gifts are used to create scholarships and awards for students who need a little help finishing their education. Many business people donate their time by volunteering on an advisory board or as a guest speaker. Other companies provide internships that give our students valuable on-the-job-experience.

Thank you to NBCUniversal and to all of our corporate, small and medium sized business supporters. You are a critical foundation of our programs, providing real-world experience for our students.

Tricia Morgan gives back to Humber students by contributing on an ongoing basis to student awards. As dean of Research, Tricia first began her career at Humber as a teacher and then as associate dean in the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

It was as a teacher where Tricia first saw the impact her giving could have. Many students wishing to pursue postsecondary education begin their college careers taking the General Arts and Science program in Humber’s School of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Often these students struggle financially, trying to balance their time between family, work and school.

“When you work with students who are already disadvantaged, you can see what a difficult decision it is for them to come to school at all… what an economic hardship it places on them and their families. Supporting students through payroll deduction each month is the least I can do.”

It’s not just about the money. Although a scholarship is obviously a huge help to students who must work their way through college, Tricia says the greater impact is often on the students’ self-esteem. “Many of these students feel overwhelmed in their lives, finding it a challenge to see the world of possibilities ahead. So to be recognized as a successful student, to be noticed for their accomplishments… this really has a huge impact. It means a lot to them.”

George Halim was a self-described “jock” in high school. So it was no surprise when he went to university in Indiana on full scholarships for both baseball and soccer. The surprise came when he shattered his ankle during his first year of school. George lost both of his scholarships and had to return home to Canada.

Faced with an uncertain future, George chose to attend Humber College after falling in love with the journalism program during a student information night. It helped that Humber has excellent soccer and baseball programs too!

After a year of working every job possible to pay for school and living expenses, George’s dreams were once again threatened. He wasn’t sure if he would have enough money for tuition.

Thankfully, George was granted one of the scholarships he had applied for. The Humber Students’ Federation Leadership Scholarship he received last year helped pay for his tuition. George is immensely grateful for the award, saying the support let him focus on school.

Although the financial help was invaluable, the scholarship also gave George’s self-confidence a boost. “It was the best feeling in the world, to receive an academic scholarship. I felt like I had accomplished something other than sports for the first time in my life.”

When asked what he would say to the generous donors who make scholarships like his possible, George paused for a moment to reflect, then said: “Thank you. You opened my eyes to something I didn’t even know I was capable of. And that means the world to me.”

George is enjoying Humber’s journalism program and the real-world experience it provides. He recently completed a six week paid internship at the Globe and Mail, and hopes to return there once he completes his studies in 2014.

John Narvali graduated from Humber over 30 years ago. He now runs a successful photography business and is admittedly living his dream. John is incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to photograph some of the world’s most well-known and respected figures, including Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela. And you could say it all began at Humber so many years ago.

John’s family mantra is “give back” so it was an easy choice for John to start giving back to Humber College once his own business was up and running. He started small, donating photography equipment, serving as an advisory board member and guest lecturer. Now, John donates to the Narvali Digital Photography Award, given to a student with the best portrait portfolio.

Although John began his postsecondary education in commerce, he always loved to take photos. He went to Humber to learn more about photography. Once he discovered he had a talent for taking photos, he set his sights high and chose to make a living doing what he loves to do.

John hopes that by supporting an award he can make a little bit of a difference in a student’s life, perhaps helping them to follow their dreams.

“Sometimes when you look back and wonder how it all started… you see that little catalyst… Someone said “you did good work”. And that’s all it takes for the trajectory of your life to change.”

John encourages other Humber alumni to give back to students in whatever way they can. He knows first-hand what a blessing it can be to touch students’ lives in such a tangible way.

The Humber Music Program is an example of the power of a few to make a difference to so many. Working with 400 talented young music students, the Humber Music program was able to host a few special programs and major concerts this past year thanks to the generosity of donors: • A celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz legend Gil Evans was held last fall. Ryan Truesdell was brought in as Composer-in- Residence, who is the only person entrusted by the Evans family to use his music. Under Ryan’s tutelage, our music students performed 20 of Evans’ iconic jazz pieces. • An Artist-in-Residence event featured legendary drummer and composer Jack DeJohnette at Humber. His workshops were illuminating to staff and student alike. • Last March, the annual Spring Concert brought together 11 of the 12 past winners of our most prestigious student award, the Oscar Peterson Prize. • Last spring also saw guitar superstar Pat Metheny visit Humber to give a workshop. He spoke to students in a way that felt like one musician was talking to another, rather than a superstar talking to students.
