Continuing the summer tradition of spotlighting national cinemas from around the globe, TIFF Cinematheque mounted its Summer in France programme. TIFF Cinematheque kicked off its 2019 Fall Season in October with a spotlight on Martinique-born director Euzhan Palcy — the first Black woman to ever direct a Hollywood studio film. Programmed by Lydia Ogwang, the series spotlighted three of the filmmaker’s signature narrative works: the Truffaut-backed period drama Sugar Cane Alley, the magical-realist musical Siméon, and the apartheid thriller A Dry White Season. 34 35 In partnership with local organizers, TIFF Film Circuit brings the best of Canadian and international films to over 180 groups in more than 150 communities across Canada, includ- ing Camrose and Hinton, in Alberta, as well as London and Long Lake #58 First Nation, in Ontario. 2019 was a record year in Film Circuit history. Together, we reached an attendance of over 340,000 in 2019. Helping us achieve this goal were the strong performances of Tom Harper’s Wild Rose, Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, and Miranda de Pencier’s The Grizzlies.

Film Circuit Organizers welcomed 60 special guests in 2019, including filmmakers, ac- tors, animators, producers, and subject-matter experts. The three-day festival offered a Movie Marathon featuring throw- back classics like 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) and Princess Mononoke (1999), along with free screenings of fresh new films such as the Oscar-nominated documentary Minding the Gap (2018).

The festival also included panels, workshops, the Battle of the Scores competition, and the inaugural Young Creators Showcase, which spotlighted shorts from emerging Canadian creators under 25.

Each year, the festival is programmed by the TIFF Next Wave Committee, a team of young people from across the who are passionate about sharing their love of film with their peers. The Committee ensures the stories and voices of under-represented youth are heard.
