Goals: The primary goal of this class is to give students a sociological understanding of religion as a powerful, important, and influential social institution that is associated with many social processes and phenomena that motivate and influence how people act and see the world around them. The class will rely on a variety of methods that include comparative analysis, theoretical explanations, ethnographic studies, and empirical studies designed to help students better understand religion and its impact upon societies, global-international events, and personal well-being. This overview of the nature, functioning, and diversity of religious institutions should help students make more discerning decisions regarding cultural, political, and moral issues that are often influenced by religion. II. Topics To Be Covered: The course is laid out in two parts. The first section begins with a review of conventional and theoretical conceptions of religion and an overview of the importance and centrality of religion to human societies. It emphasizes the diversity and nature of "religious experience" in terms of different denominations, cultures, classes, and individuals. This is followed by overview of sociological assumptions and theories and their application to religion. A variety of theoretical schools including, functionalism, conflict theory, exchange theory, sociology of knowledge, sociobiology, feminist theory, symbolic interactionism, postmodern and critical theory will be addressed and applied to religion. -

The researcher used a qualitative method in this research. The sources of this data were primary data and secondary data. In this research, the researcher used a documentation technique. In analyzing the data, the researcher used a literary analysis.There were some procedures in doing this research, such as identifying the conflict in the characters, classifying and categorizing of the conflicts found in the movie, identifying the important points related research, classifying the characters personalities and moral values in the movie, identifying the development of the plot and describing the conclusion.There were 7 moral values found in the “Aladdin 2019” movie directed by Guy Ritchie such as kindness, empathy, self-control, wisdom, cooperation, loyalty, and justice. -

d “nOt YOuR GRandFatHeR’S SHeRlOCk HOlMeS”: Guy Ritchie’s 21st Century Reboot of a 19th Century british Icon Ashley Liening Sherlock Holmes “has enjoyed the most vigorous afterlife of any fictional character” posits thomas leitch, adaptation scholar and author of Film Adaptation and Its Discontents (leitch 207). Indeed, a franchise has been built around Sir arthur Conan doyle’s quirky detective, so much so that Sherlock Holmes has become one of the most adapted literary figures of all time, outnumbered only by Frankenstein’s monster, tarzan, and dracula (207). Clare Parody asserts, “Franchise practice has produced and surrounded some of the highest grossing and best-known fictional texts, characters, plots, and worlds of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries,” and Sherlock Holmes is no exception (211). From 1900 till the present day, Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed by “nearly 100 actors, in over 200 films, from more than a dozen different countries,” and it does not appear like “Sir arthur Conan doyle’s violin- playing, pipe-smoking, cocaine-injecting sleuth” is going any- where anytime soon (Cook 31). In fact, the twenty-first century has experienced a resurgence in more “straightforward” Holmes adaptations, namely bbC’s Sherlock (2010), which aired in three ninety-minute episodes and portrays a tech-savvy twenty-first century Holmes, and Guy Ritchie’s 2009 and 2011 35 big screen adaptations, the latter of which will be the focus of this essay. I aim to explore the ways in which Guy Ritchie’s Sher lock Holmes (2009) adaptation, while inextricably bound to Conan doyle’s storytelling franchise, diverges from its prede- cessors in that it is not an amalgamation of other Holmes adap- tations. -

MS Joan Treble (Sutton) Straus Papers Coll. 00190D Joan Treble (Sutton) Straus (1932 - ) Papers Dates: 1939-2015 Extent: 13 boxes, 4 items (3.5 metres) Scope and Content: Contains the papers of Joan Treble (Sutton) Straus including a small amount of material regarding her early life including primary and high school education (1939-1950), as well as at her time at the University of Toronto (1950-1953). Includes material such as photographs and newspaper clippings related to her modeling career and her work as a fashion consultant (1952-1970). The collection covers Sutton Straus’ career as a journalist with the Toronto Telegram (1971), The Toronto Star (1972-1979, 1981-1992) and The Toronto Star (1979-1981, 1992). This includes correspondence from readers, co-workers and well-known politicians, entertainers and dignitaries, as well as photographs of Sutton Straus during the course of her work. The material also includes clippings of her columns, interviews and articles preserved by Sutton Straus, as well as three oversized scrapbooks containing clippings from her time at the Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Sun. The collection also comprises material related to Sutton Straus’ career as an author of six books, and her long-term volunteer work with non-profit and philanthropic organizations in both Canada and the United States. The collection also contains a small amount of personal material related to Sutton Straus including media appearances, speeches, newspaper and magazines articles, invitations and correspondence. Bibliographical Information: Joan Treble (Sutton) Straus was born in Mimico, Ontario on November 30, 1932. While studying Honor English at University College, University of Toronto, she worked as a runway and photography model.
