The objectives of the research were to find out the types and meanings of moral values and the dominant moral value in Guy Ritchie’s movie “Aladdin 2019”. The researcher used a qualitative method in this research. The sources of this data were primary data and secondary data. In this research, the researcher used a documentation technique. In analyzing the data, the researcher used a literary analysis.There were some procedures in doing this research, such as identifying the conflict in the characters, classifying and categorizing of the conflicts found in the movie, identifying the important points related research, classifying the characters personalities and moral values in the movie, identifying the development of the plot and describing the conclusion.There were 7 moral values found in the “Aladdin 2019” movie directed by Guy Ritchie such as kindness, empathy, self-control, wisdom, cooperation, loyalty, and justice. There were 2 dominant moral values found in the “Aladdin 2019” movie directed by Guy Ritchie that found with many scenes than other moral values cooperation (2 scene) and loyalty (4 scene).

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents (1) background of the research, (2) problems of theresearch, (3) objective of theresearch, and (4) significance of the research

1.1 Background of the Research

Literature is an art of writing in deep meaning in many aspects. According toBennett and Royle (2004), literature is the kind of writing which most persistently and most provocatively engages with the uncanny aspects of experience, thought, and feeling.(p.35). It means that literature is a of writing that includesmany aspects.

Literature can find from many literary works. Moreover, Cuddon (2013) states that literature is a broad term that usually denotes works that belong to the major genres: epic, drama, lyric, novel, short story, ode.(p.404). It tells, about for writing study literature have many genres such as drama, novel, or short story.

Furthermore,Bonn (2010) suggests that literature includes poetry, drama, fiction, and many kinds of non-fiction writing, as well as oral, dramatic, and broadcast compositions, not necessarily preserved in a written format, such as films and television programs. (p.93). Based on the above explanation, literature is an important thing when learning about language. Moreover, talk about a broadcast composition such a film and television programs. For today to get information is not difficult because it can from people, newspapers or movies. Besides, amovie is popular it is because the movie is the age limit and everyone likes to watch a movie. 2

According to Quinn (2006) defines “movie as a general term a particular motion picture or for motion pictures in general.” (p.165). People watching a movie to relax their minds and it is fun. Because of that, sometimes they forget something important after watching the movie such as moral value. Every movie has a different story, and as a watcher, I have to know about a moral value in the movie. Moral values area good thing inside a movie it can be a knowledge for life or life in society.

Cuddon (2013) suggests that moral value is the lesson to be learned from a story, poem, fable, play, or indeed any work which purports to teach anything either directly or obliquely.(p.445). It means that every movie has a different lesson and the watchers have to understand what they read or what they watch. Sometimes there is a movie that givesthe watcher a lesson directly but sometimes does not.

For making a movie success it must have a good director and then actor and actress. Quinn (2006) states that the director is the person charged with the overall responsibility for the performance.(p.120).Director is a difficult job to make a good movie and to be a good director must have many experiences. Furthermore, one of them is Guy Ritchie. He is known as a director who often films about violence, gambling, a crew of gangsters, Spy and also fight like a RocknRolla, The Man From uncle(2008), Sherlock Holmes(2009), King Arthur: Legend of The Sword (2017) and the latest in Disney’s Aladdin (2019) much different than the other film he directed.

In this research, the researcher analyzed one of Guy Ritchie’s movies entitled

“Disney’s Aladdin (2019)”. The reason for the researcher choose this movie is because it is Aladdin is a good movie and have many moral values that are related to 3

human life.Disney’s Aladdin 2019 is an Arabian nightmovie that was produced based on Fantasy Disney’s Aladdin from 1992. Aladdin 2019 is a movie directed by Guy

Ritchie with John August as a scenario film. Moreover, this movie was produced and released by Walt Disney Pictures. This movie is about has a famous actor such as

Will Smith (as a Genie), Mena Massoud (as an Aladdin), Naomi Scott (as a Princess

Jasmine), and Marwan Kenzari (as a Jafar).

Disney’s Aladdin 2019 is a fantasy musical movie that tells about a street urchin named Aladdin and his monkey Abu, in a monarchy region in Arabic society, called Agrabah. Nope (2016) states that Aladdin is a smart-kind-hearted man and have a habit is a thief that takes for foods from peddlers in Agrabah street for a living.

His life-changing since he is meet with Royal Princess, Jasmine in the street of

Agrabah. Some trouble happens when Aladdin meets with Jafar to go inside of a cave a wonder for taking the magic lamp. Aladdin is a story from an Arabic society where gender discrimination is maintained that believes as a social critic about gender issues in Arabic society.(p.4)

Everycharacter in this story is important. Moreover, every people has a different chance in life, from this story, the watchers to face every trouble. The conclusion from the explanation above is Aladdin is not only just a fantasy story to make children happy to listen to that from a book or just watch but also from this movie all parents can get a lesson for life society. As a researcher was interested in doing a research, entitled “An Analysis of Moral Values in Guy Ritchie’s movie

“Aladdin Movie 2019” Based on Disney’s Aladdin“. 4

1.2 Problems of the Research

1.2.1 Limitation of the Problem

In this research, the researcher limited the problem of the research on analyzing the moral values in Guy Ritchie’s movie“Aladdin Movie 2019” Based on Disney’s

Aladdin.

1.2.2Formulation of the Problem

The researcher formulated the problems as follows:

1. What types and meanings of moral valuesfound in Guy Ritchie’s movie

“Aladdin Movie 2019” Based on Disney’s Aladdin?

2. What are the dominant moral values found in Guy Ritchie’s movie “Aladdin

Movie 2019” Based on Disney’s Aladdin?

1.3 Objectives of the Research

Based on the problem stated, the objectives of the researchwere as follows :

1. To find out the types and meanings of moral values found in Guy Ritchie’s movie “Aladdin Movie 2019” Based on Disney’s Aladdin.

2. To find out the dominant moral values found in Guy Ritchie’s movie “Aladdin

Movie 2019” Based on Disney’s Aladdin.

1.4 Significance of the Research

This research will be significant for the following parties, as follows :

1) For the Researcher Herself

This researchcan make her more interested in studying English Literature, and also enrich her knowledge about literary works, especially on moral values inside a movie.

2) For the Watchers

Hopefully, this research can give some important for watchers about movie components, such as moral values, in order, they can learn more about good lessons illustrated by the director inside the movie, and make them love reading or watching a literary work, such asa movie.

3) For other Researchers

Hopefully, this research was also beneficial for the other researcher who is interested in analyzing literary work as a movie, particularly on moral value, as a reference to do deep research or study.
