Film Loop Show @ HIFF 2015 Deadline for Project Proposals April 1st 2015

AFCOOP is looking for artists to create 16mm film loops for the Halifax Independent Film Festival. Using AFCOOP’s new 16mm Super Duper Film Looper, artists can create 16mm film loops up to 10 minutes in runtime.

Film Loops are an infinitely (pardon the pun) interesting format for exploring challenging, thought-provoking and experimental filmmaking. They provide an alternative viewing experience to a traditional cinema and are popular in art galleries and public art installations. Looping allows an artist to infuse new meaning into a moving picture work through repetition of the visuals; forcing the audience to re-encounter and reconsider the meaning of a piece when confronted with multiple viewings.

If you are interested in creating a loop for HIFF this year, submit a project proposal and description along with a brief bio to: [email protected] by April 1st 2015. Proposals will be reviewed and a certain number of artists chosen to create work.

Examples of film loops by artists can be seen below:

Sometimes our imaginations are sparked by a visual where words fail us. When communities plan and imagine their futures, when teams consider the possible outcomes for their projects, when groups create maps to track their progress – these are all opportunities to use visuals to engage and deepen community dialogue.

3. SCREENINGS AND EVENTS

Relative Happiness screens in Halifax and

Relative Happiness by co-writer and director Deanne Foley (NSI Totally Television) and co-writer Iain MacLeod (NSI Totally Television, NSI Features First) screens at Halifax’s Park Lane Cineplex from March 20 to 26.

The 7 p.m. screenings on March 20 and 21 will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Filmed in NS and based on the best-selling novel by Lesley Crewe, Relative Happiness is a romantic comedy with a difference. Lexie (Melissa Bergland) is a plus-size, feisty 30-year-old Cape Breton bed-and-breakfast owner, who has never received the same romantic attention as her two pretty and conventional sisters. Then one day, the man of her dreams arrives on her doorstep. But things don’t turn out quite so simple!

In order to get it held over for a second week so that it opens in other Canadian cities, we need to score a high box office total during the first weekend. We have targeted one screening per day to enable us to reach this goal.

On Friday March 20th, there will be a Q&A after the 7pm show with stars Susan Kent, David Christoffel, Molly Dunsworth, director Deanne Foley, and the film’s producers, moderated by CBC Radio movie critic and The Coast personality Tara Thorne. The screening will be followed by a reception at the Victory Arms Restaurant in the Lord Nelson hotel.

Following the 7pm show on Saturday March 21st there will be a second Q&A and this time a group of proud Lesley Crewe fans, known as “Lesley’s Crewe” will bus in from Cape Breton for the occasion. The Saturday night audience is invited to a Cape Breton style party at the World Trade and Convention Centre, Third Floor, 1800 Argyle Street with appetizers, a cash bar and a live musical performance, featuring popular Cape Breton musician Ronnie MacEachern , accompanied by Bill Plaskett on guitar and Wynne Jordan on flute and tin whistle. This is a show not to be missed if you want to hear one of Cape Breton’s best known fiddle players in action! https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate 6/38 2/5/2016 https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate Keep your ticket to show at the door at the World Trade and Convention Centre 1800 Argyle Street

If you don’t like going out on winter nights, we invite you to the 1.30pm matinee on Sunday. March 22nd. After the show we invite you to meet informally with author and co-screenwriter Lesley Crewe at the Bookmark store across the street from the cinema.

Please help us by coming to one of these screenings over the weekend so that this entertaining local movie will have an extended run.

Please get your tickets in advance at www.Cineplex.com/showtimes

Friday screenings at 7pm for $7, concessions available!

GEMMA BOVERY March 27th @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Anne Fontaine | France | 2014 | 99 mins | French with English subtitles

A breezy and enjoyable modern-day take on Flaubert’s classic story.. Martin, an ex-Parisian and well-heeled hipster passionate about Gustave Flaubert, settles into a Norman village as a baker, and sees an English couple moving into a small farm nearby. Not only are the names of the new arrivals Gemma and Charles Bovery, but their behavior also seems to be inspired by Flaubert’s heroes.

Leviathan April 3 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Andrey Zvyagintsev | Russia | 2014 | 142 mins

A modern reworking of the Book of Job, the film is set on a peninsula by the Barents Sea and tells the story of https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate 7/38 2/5/2016 https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate a man who struggles against a corrupt mayor who wants his piece of land. The producer Alexander Rodnyansky has said: “It deals with some of the most important social issues of contemporary Russia while never becoming an artist’s sermon or a public statement, it is a story of love and tragedy experienced by ordinary people”. It was announced that Leviathan would be Russia’s submission for theAcademy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards. It made the January Shortlist of nine films.

Wild Tales April 10 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Damián Szifrón | Argentina & Spain | 2015 | 122 mins

Revenge is a dish best served wild. As its title suggests, Damian Szifron’s latest feature, Wild Tales, is a compendium of outrageously bizarre stories, each more shocking and hilarious than the last. Blending subversive black comedy with dramatically loaded scenarios, Szifron skilfully weaves together six separate shorts, unlinked by narrative but unified by a violence that simmers on the cusp of explosion. The film was received with acclaim at Cannes, allegedly receiving a ten-minute standing ovation.

Long Shadows at Dawn: The Art of Film Noir http://artgallery.dal.ca/events/filmvideo.html Curated by Ron Foley MacDonald Now recognized as one the most influential of filmmaking styles, Film Noir was often dismissed in its own time as genre-heavy urban crime drama. With its creeping shadows, wet streets, addled subjectivity and looming sense of betrayal, Noir realized the dark underside of America’s postwar triumphalism. Populated by losers, tough guys and femmes fatales, Noir sports stylized dialogue, ruthless action and an existential world view that resonates deeply with today’s sense of everyday despair.

In this sampling of Film Noir Classics, we proceed from the beginning—just before the US entry into WWII— right up to Noir’s end at the beginning of the 1960s when a new, hopeful era starts and the genre experiences its eclipse.

SCREENINGS WEDNESDAYS AT 8 PM - FREE ADMISSION

UPCOMING:

25 March - Pitfall André De Toth, USA, 1948, 86 minutes. Dick Powell plays a returning vet with an ideal family life, yet he risks it all for a woman who is also being pursued by a thuggish PD played by Noir’s favourite heavy, Canuck Raymond Burr.

1 April - The Reckless Moment Max Ophüls, USA, 1949, 78 minutes. A middle-class mother (Joan Bennett) is blackmailed by a gentlemanly mobster (James Mason) in this classic Noir, remade recently as The Deep End.

6. COMMUNITY NEWS

Crowdfunding Campaign for New Nova Scotian documentary features! Documentary Double Feature (DDF) is the beginning of a series on small town personas from across Canada. The focus is to showcase the many talented people who live in rural communities while giving a glimpse of life in areas not as well known.

On March 31st, 2015, a crowdfunding campaign will go live to help jump start the first two documentaries: ELLSWORTH and CURRENTLY UNTITLED produced/directed by Troy Howell and DT Siddhartha Fraser

The campaign will feature perks like a basic thank you, onscreen credits including producer (depending on contribution) dinner and a private screening with subjects of the films to even a chance at directing a dramatised segment for ELLSWORTH! Several other perks including digital versions of both films and exclusive clothing will also be available!

CURRENTLY UNTITLED is a unique look into the decades long friendship of established visual artists Wayne Boucher and Geoff Butler. Hear from the women closest to them and experience their first ever collaboration on a painting series!

The ARTISTS: Wayne is known for his deeply emotional abstract oil paintings while Geoff has worked in fantastic realism and book publishing. Though these men are professionally separate, they share many common elements in their personal lives and adventures through the art world.

ELLSWORTH is a compassionate look at the life of Ellsworth (Al) Whittle. Originally from New Brunswick, Al began his movie career in Nova Scotia in 1953, quickly becoming Canada’s youngest theatre manager where he maintained the Acadia Cinema in Wolfville NS until 2000. Al’s life has been full of entertainment, community involvement, and inspiring movie goers young and old to live their lives to the fullest while never compromising their dreams. While everyone in Wolfville knew Al as the warm and welcoming face of the cinema, his life was always kept far from the public eye. Born in a time and place not so accepting of homosexuality, Al's life has been fairly solitary save for ever-loving friends and cats!

DDF is a great project everyone can contribute to as it helps bring awareness to local talent and issues every day Canadians must face.

REMEMBER to go to indiegogo.com on March 31st to make your contribution to an important project!

If your organization would like to be a sponsor, please feel free to contact the filmmakers. https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate 34/38 2/5/2016 https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate

The website for both films should be live within a week: www.devopro.org Please feel free to contact DT Siddhartha Fraser ([email protected]) or Troy Howell ([email protected])

The Centre for Art Tapes is thrilled to announce that Lisa Lipton has been selected as Local Artist-in-Residence

The Local Artist-in-Residence program (LAIR) provides an opportunity for local media artists to experiment and develop new works involving audio, video or new media. This residency will take place at the Centre for Art Tapes from December 2014 through March 2015. Previous Local Artists in Residence include: Krista Davis, Will Robinson, Khanhthuan Tran, Melanie Colosimo, Eryn Foster, Sym Corrigan and Léola Leblanc.

Lisa Lipton is a multidisciplinary visual artist, musician and director currently based in Halifax. She received her BFA from NSCAD University and MFA from the University of Windsor. Her art practice probes the boundaries of performance and filmic production through an exploration of site-specificity and localized collaboration. Her process begins by immersing herself in a chosen community and then developing a narrative that translates her interactions with the sights, sounds and people of that community. Lipton works to encourage critical engagement by reflecting upon themes of identity, subculture, ritual, romance, music and movement.

During her residency, Lipton will be shooting and editing her first feature-length art film, The Impossible Blue Rose. Shot on location, the film is told from the perspective of eight characters living in different parts of North America: L.A. & Death Valley National Park, CA; Fairfield, IA; Oahu, HI; Vancouver, BC; Winnipeg, MB; Windsor, ON; Middle Sackville, NS; and Woody Point, NL. The project promotes community involvement by https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate 36/38 2/5/2016 https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate

inviting locals to participate in the creative process – performing characters and sharing in sound and visual collaboration.

The work is highly aestheticized, electric and edgy, while showcasing the voices of individuals, artist and musicians from across North America. The soundtrack hosts original musical contributions from various artists that were encountered during the creation process. It addresses gender politics and notions of identity, while exploring the multiple voices of a female protagonist who aims to challenge traditionally male dominant roles and their associative subcultures (ie: drumming, directing, skateboarding).

Community Grants Program Deadline – March 31 The Community Grants Program is a municipal program that provides annual cash grants to registered non- profit organizations and charities located throughout the Municipality. There are two types of grant (a) a project grant of up to $5,000 and (b) a capital grant of up to $25,000. For further information on criteria go to: http://www.halifax.ca/boardscom/bccgrants/CommunityGrantsProgram.php
