Concept

Cafe Teatro Plus is a vehicle for showcasing Latino art and culture as part of an ongoing series to be held at the Jorge Hernandez Cultural Center at Villa Victoria. Be it in the form of concerts, poetry readings, film/video presentations, small-scale theatre pieces, comedy or slide shows. the format combines both the intimate feel of a gathering of friends, with the added dimension of a larger event like a dance or a party. Both elements would be present in the same evening in a flexible format that allows one or both types of interaction to happen.

Cafe Teatro Plus is also a kind of laboratory where new and established artists will be able to try out new material or perform in formats that are unconventional or different. A musician who has a band might try out a duet or trio format, a poet might decide to perform his/her poetry as theatre or with slides, a playwright might adapt part of a play for a monologue or a short piece for two actors, a percussionist might want to attempt a solo performance, a dancer might want to perform with a poet. Or artists might want to turn their performance into a workshop with audience participation.

While artists from outside the state will be part of the series, Cafe Teatro Plus aims to be a permanent forum for Massachusetts-based artists to share their art with an engaging audience. Cafe Teatro Plus would be a weekly occurrence, in an effort to establish a continuity and reputation for sponsoring regular, high quality events that are entertaining and educational

The second part of the evening would be along the more traditional lines of a club, for people to dance, socialize and enjoy either live music or a DJ. In any event, the idea is to combine cultural/educational components of the evening with the entertainment segment -although the lines between the two are not always so distinct- in order to offer different alternatives within a same evening. Cafe Teatro Plus aims to present a format that is open to multiple audiences and promote Latino culture on an ongoing and affordable basis. CAFE TEATRO PLUS BIOGRAPHIES
