10 From the editor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There can be few in the Valley who have not enjoyed the sunshine and blue skies of the past weeks ! While last summer would not have won any awards for endless blue skies and warmth, the difference this year is remarkable as we have barely needed more than thin shirts and shorts rather than thick jumpers and raincoats. Valley fetes too have benefitted from good weather (until the Gardens Club show today) - all have been well supported by helpers and visitors and a welcome opportunity to mingle with residents in a different community.

As the school holidays draw to a close, tractor activity lessens and hedgerow blackberries ripen, our Valley roads will resume their traffic pattern with commuters, parents, school transport and delivery vehicles. The speed of traffic and the safety of the roads is high on Piddle Valley First School’s agenda –also the main concern voiced to members of the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group at Valley fetes. Our front cover shows PC Mark Jones and Piddle Valley First School children displaying a speed gun and the winning ‘Keep Us Safe’ poster. Look out for posters through the Valley - it is hoped that they will be a reminder to us all not to exceed the speed limit – and help to ‘Keep Us Safe.

We have another instalment from the Novice Beekeeper, Neighbourhood Plan and Parish Council reports, one letter and an invitation from The Countrymen’s Club for older men who want to remain active and involved in the countryside. As ever, we are grateful to our advertisers; this issue sees more new advertisements – so do please let advertisers know that you discovered them in PVNV – and do please continue to share your news, views and events. Michaelmas

The Feast of St Michael and All Angels falls each year on the 29th September. This year that is a Sunday and also the fifth Sunday of the month when we in this benefice try to meet to worship together. We shall gather for a eucharist at 10.30am at Lyscombe chapel, the simple 12th century thatched chapel in its beautiful setting on Lyscombe Farm which is about half way between Piddletrenthide and on the north side of Drakes Lane, the road which connects those two villages.

Michael is one of only two angels identified by name in the Bible, the other being the angel Gabriel who, according to Luke’s Gospel, identified himself to Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, when foretelling John’s birth. Luke also tells us that it was Gabriel who was sent by God to tell Mary that she was to be the mother of our Lord.

Michael is referred to in the book Revelation, where, when ‘war broke out in heaven, Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.’ John, the author of Revelation, recounts his vision of how, following this exclusion of the Devil from heaven, the Devil then went on to persecute the people of God on earth until Jesus finally conquered the power of evil.

Michael is also mentioned in the Hebrew scriptures of the Old Testament where, in the book Daniel, he is described as ‘the great prince, the protector of [God’s] people’ and his battle at the end of time, as described in John’s vision, is foreshadowed.

It has been suggested that the archangel is the Michael referred to in the song Michael, row the boat ashore since in one old tradition the archangel is the one who receives the souls of the dead as they cross the river to the promised land.

Various chapels have been built on the tops of hills and mountains in honour of Michael, two well known ones being Mont St Michel in Normandy and St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. But our celebration of his feast day, the 29th September, will be in a chapel in a valley, Lyscombe.

18 Obituaries

Janet Fowler (1948 - 2013) Janet was born at Tatton Farm near , the youngest of six children, having three sisters and two brothers. She later moved to Tarrant Rawston with her family. On leaving school she worked in Flight Refuelling’s canteen at Tarrant Rushton air field. Later she met and married Roger and after various farm jobs they moved to Piddletrenthide Estate, working for the Boughey family. Janet worked in various local pubs including the European and the Brace of Pheasants. The family moved to Minehead to work on a farm but returned three years later to the Piddletrenthide Estate, this time staying for 25 years. Janet was a professional cook so worked at the Poachers Inn for Stephen and Avril Fox and family. She was well known for her steak and kidney pies and Dorset apple cakes. They later moved to where she worked in the local supermarket. Janet died peacefully in the Weldmar Hospice on Sunday July 7th and is survived by Roger, children Simon and Wendy and grandson Henry.

Frederick Ronald Hobday (1930 – 2013)

Fred and Beryl Hobday were well-known in Piddletrenthide for the attractive garden of their bungalow home, Willow Lawn, until moving to Gillingham (Dorset) for a smaller garden and to be closer to their children. Worcester-born, Fred joined the Navy from school and spent his ten years mainly in the Mediterranean, often playing football against local sides, sometimes with armed guards patrolling the touchlines! Whilst on board, his ship was sent to recover the wreckage of a Comet airliner which had crashed with the loss of all passengers and crew.

On discharge, he joined British Telecom, initially erecting poles and kiosks while studying and regularly passing exams led to him becoming head of cabling and maintenance in the Tunbridge Wells area, badly affected in the Great Storm of 1987.

His first marriage broke down but he maintained an excellent relationship with his three children to this day. In 1969 he married Beryl and set up home in Halesowen, moving on promotion to Wadhurst, Sussex, which made Beryl a commuter for the next ten years, before retiring to Piddletrenthide.

In 1938 young Fred was taken to watch West Bromwich Albion play football and became hooked, occasionally meeting up with his two sons to attend matches. At a Piddle Valley Gardens Club function, a member interrupted a deep conversation to ask Fred what element of gardening was being so earnestly discussed ? He responded “WBA” and often wondered, with amusement, if the person concerned ever discovered what that meant in gardening terms!

The large Piddle Valley contingent at Fred’s cremation service at showed the warmth and feeling for Fred and Beryl’s years in our midst.

Alton Pancras

Display of Coronation Memorabilia at Alton St Pancras Church AP Alton Pancras is nothing if not musically versatile. Last November we had classical chamber music, now in July a jazz session by the Dave Bowen Quartet. Memories were jogged and feet set tapping by hearing old favourites in imaginative new arrangements played by master musicians. The evening was enhanced by the other artistes appearing, Jo and Felicia on flowers, Frances and Sally, along with the shops at and Piddletrenthide on tickets, and Angela T, Susan C, Sally D and Elaine on refreshments. During the interval we wandered in the churchyard, glass in hand, feeling quite like Glyndebourne. A perfect way to spend a summer evening. Frances Mallett

AP An abundance of local skills and talents were displayed in just one day in the Dangerfield’s Paddock when the Piddle Valley Garden Club Summer Show in the afternoon, was followed by an evening supper and performances both musical and amusing by valley artistes.

AP Fortunately road accidents in the valley are rare, so all the more impressive when the noise of a crash on our northern border brought a posse of neighbours rushing to the scene, including a doctor and nurse. First aid, traffic control and site clearing showed neighbourhood care at its best – and the lesson that on country roads like ours, around each bend is likely to be a large farm vehicle !

AP Margaret Sawyer, whose ashes were interred in the churchyard recently, lived with husband Frederick in one of the two Barcombe Farm Cottages just after the war, during which she served in the Women’s Land Army and had lodged in the Manor House and Beechmead, the former Rectory.

AP Mervyn Gibbs of Creekmore near Poole, who died recently, descended from the prolific AP Gibbs family that included Eliza born 1811, a servant at AP Manor who eloped with Thomas Phelps, son of the Lord of the Manor and married in London in 1832. She died aged 27 and lies buried in our churchyard as Eliza Phelps. Mervyn provided photographs, research and much information to the AP history project and helped to finance the publishing of the book.

AP Julie Squires and Kelvin Bland are just two residents who have recently – and separately - experienced what each described as a pleasant, comfortable, privately-chauffeured service to and from Dorchester. They were each the only passengers on a bus service we would allege was vital if signing a petition to keep it.

22 AP During the years that Fred Hobday needed cancer treatment (see Obituary) Eric and Jean Groome of The Knappings would drive to his home in Gillingham, take him to either Southampton or Salisbury hospitals, back to Gillingham, then home to AP. Friendship was never more true.

AP Neat coincidence that Higher Barton, home of Andrew Prentice, Felicia Webb and daughter Lyra, has six white Doves housed in one a former farmyard building. In the late ’60s, owners of the house were - Charles and Maria Dove!

Piddlehinton

Piddlehinton Church Fete at West Lodge, July 20th 2013 Piddlehinton always seems to be lucky with the weather when they hold their fete and this year was no exception. Indeed the blazing sun shone so fiercely that the ice cream and Pimms stalls broke all records. We welcomed the young gymnasts from the YMCA who gave stunning acrobatic displays and the young ones never flinched in the sweltering conditions when they donned woolly animal costumes for their delightful Jungle Book performance. It was a wonderful event with the traditional Puppet Show, races for the children, the dog show, duck race, pony rides and the usual popular stalls.

Under a starry night sky in the beautiful grounds of West Lodge the evening, the roast pork BBQ went with a swing with Piers McBride and his daughter entertaining us with their highly professional singing of familiar tunes. Everyone had a great time and the evening ended later than usual with many joining in the songs with fine voice.

Although numbers were down by 10% we managed to raise just over £4,500, a very commendable total as Cerne Abbas held their fete on the same day this year. While most of the proceeds will go to the Church, some will go to the Air Ambulance, the Millennium Green and the Village Hall. Of course, an event like this could not happen without the amazing support of many of the villagers and I would like to thank Susan Belgrave for allowing us to hold the fete in her grounds, to those who helped put up and take down tents etc, to all the stallholders and of course to the committee who work tirelessly for many months to ensure this traditional community occasion is a great success. Honor Brown

Ride & Stride for Dorset Historic Churches Trust Saturday September 14th For 30 years churches of all denominations countrywide have been participating in this event to raise money to preserve and improve our historic churches. Last year Piddlehinton raised £920 thanks to our generous sponsors. This wonderful result put us 12th in the league table of 171 Dorset parishes participating ! This year Alan Neades is hoping to visit even more than the 40 churches he bicycled to last year. Reg Hanbury is aiming at a walk from Bingham's Melcombe church to Hilton church - not far as the crow flies, but the picturesque path crosses a steep escarpment on the way and it will certainly test him ! Both of them would like your sponsorship please - forms are in St Mary's Church, or phone Reg on 01300 348465. Would anyone else like to join in or make up a team to beat Piddlehinton ? The Bridge Educational Trust

The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century. The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered.

At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible, provided they contain an educational element. The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal education has been interrupted

The next meeting of Trustees to consider applications will be held on 2nd November 2013. Meetings of Trustees will now normally be held in March, July and November. Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk. Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL, or emailing [email protected]. Applications by post or email should be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they are to be considered.

34 Newsletter 4

Progress continues as members of our focus groups generate much more specific evidence and begin to outline the main subjects which are emerging as the issues that residents would like to see included for incorporation in the future Neighbourhood Plan to serve the five villages for the next 15 years or so.

The main subjects of interest remain traffic speed and danger along the main road, a valley cycleway, affordable housing and a village centre to serve the whole valley population.

Although we do now have a good number of people involved in what are becoming very interesting studies, we would still welcome more of you to come forward and join the discussion at the regular meetings, usually once a month for each group, when they plan actions to be undertaken for the period ahead.

We also have a need for a computer-literate secretary to the main working group for their monthly meetings to help record and distribute notes and information to those involved which helps them plan the work they undertake.

Do get in touch with me if you feel able to help in any of these spheres.

Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan Housing - both for open market and low cost for local people led by Malcolm Johnston [email protected] / 01300 34869

We have been consulting and meeting with individuals and representatives across the community to gain ideas and support for the Neighbourhood Plan and have now identified various sites in the valley that may be suitable for a variety of uses including :

• low cost housing • open market housing (or a mixture of the two) • live/work units • social facilities for the valley

If you know of a site that you think might be suitable for any of these uses please do get in touch as we need input from as many residents in the valley as possible.

We are currently organising a Housing Needs Survey to try to determine the housing needs for the valley over approximately the next ten years. This will not only look at the need for low cost housing but should indicate what other types of housing are wanted by the valley residents. The survey will be delivered to all households in the valley in the autumn and we would ask that everyone takes the time to look at it and complete and return, so that we can have a true picture of the housing needs.

Business and community needs led by Ian Messer [email protected] / 01300 348580

We have carried out a survey of village businesses, leisure and tourism activities and an assessment of the companies and their work at the Piddlehinton Enterprise Park. The ongoing tenor of opinion we have gathered from the community suggests a range of objectives that need to be addressed :

• small business units and live/work dwellings to enable young local people to set up here in the Valley

• some additional holiday cottage units for growing tourism needs

• a survey of disused or underused workshop and industrial buildings and redundant farm buildings which can be converted, upgraded or replaced to provide accommodation for future workplaces or homes

Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan • a large, covered area, central to the Valley villages to provide a much needed multi-purpose resource for community use, preferably with a green open space and parking nearby to help avoid some of the current expense of marquee hire, eg fetes and craft fairs, Garden Club shows, concerts, film nights, drama productions, dance, art exhibitions, farmers’ market, Scouts, Guides, Brownies, dog shows, fitness classes, indoor sports and hiring out for revenue

• complementing the above, a secondary meeting space in each village for smaller groups to assemble such as a parish room

This is a focus group which still needs more help from interested residents, particularly in the next few months, so if you feel able to contribute some time, this will be much appreciated by the rest of the team. Please contact John Browning on 01300 348981.

Community energy generation and low energy design led by Dot Browning [email protected] / 01300 348280

Realising renewable energy generation opportunities in the Valley continues to be the main objective and its energy conservation to reduce running costs. Some progress and recommendations have been achieved but we would welcome help from more members of our community in this important subject for the future. Our objectives :

Hydropower Potential locations on the have been identified and visits to established hydropower projects are arranged to establish viability of our smaller river.

Solar While the siting of the proposed Bourne Park solar array applications has minimal visual impact in the wider landscape, the capacity of the grid to accommodate further extensive photovoltaic arrays in the Valley is limited.

• include guidance in specifying and siting solar panels for domestic, business and live/work units

Reducing energy costs

• guidance and recommendations for residents on reducing heating and power costs Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan Fuel from Woodland Discussions continue with the Environment Group, the users and owners of woodland, to devleop a community policy for fuel for use as logs or chippings within the community. Visits are planned in September to community projects elsewhere in Dorset which are up, running, viable and benefitting their neighbourhoods.

• create, if this proves viable, a management plan for the production of a community energy resource in conjunction with landowners and local employment, perhaps using a Valley co-ordinating body or trust

Wind turbines It is clear that any large scale wind turbine application would gain little support, though it is recognised that individual owners may opt for a turbine if their siting is appropriate. Those interested in this subject should make contact with Dot Browning .

• include evidence for any small scale operation required in specific locations

Recycling initiatives The Anaerobic Digester (AD) and Mole Valley Feed Mill take in commercial, organic and animal waste and the photovoltaic arrays will generate power at Bourne Park, leading the way in energy terms. We continue to explore possible community energy and recycling initiatives.

• establish whether any spare capacity can be taken up at Enterprise Park

• provide a collection point for plastic lids from milk and beverage cartons in large quantities for their reuse and reduce the amount of waste to landfill.

• encourage use of horse manure for allotments, gardens or brick production for biofuel stoves managed with woodland fuel.

Environment, landscape and farming led by Peter Chance [email protected] / 01300 348311

The work of this focus group is well under way and has identified issues we need to set out for the Neighbourhood Plan :

• all future building development should be situated in the Valley bottom, in or adjacent to the existing development forming the five communities

Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan • protection of specific long distance views from future development areas where development may be appropriate for uses such as private and low-cost housing, business and recreational facilities

• future uses for redundant attractive and historic buildings where they can be protected by conversion for new, sustainable uses

• protection of green open spaces which add to the quality of the environment in which we live

• farming in the Piddle Valley is mainly well-structured in size and scale of enterprise; we need to recognise that additional buildings may be needed to allow expansion of farm activity and facilitate technological development; new buildings should be environmentally sustainable and designed in sympathy with their landscape setting

• prevent as far as possible, farm fragmentation that results in unviable businesses to avoid unnecessary damage to the landscape

• encourage the longer-term management of under-utilised woodland as a potential energy source and a valuable asset in protecting our landscapes

• encourage protection, management and replacement where necessary, of hedgerows as valuable wildlife corridors and important features of the landscape

• require the highest level of management to ensure protection of our 21 sites of Local Nature Interest, some of which are in good condition but others are deteriorating in their range of plant species

• set out ways to protect and enhance public access that increases visitor numbers and encourages business activity

• encourage restoration of fingerpost direction signs where necessary and remove unnecessary signage

Responses to these proposals for priorities and any other aspects you may feel we should address will be much appreciated and help to ensure we have wide acceptance of the Plan as it emerges.

Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan Transport, traffic speed, footpaths, cycleways and communications led by Neil Herbert [email protected] / 01300 348479

We are collecting broadband speeds for comparison so we would be glad if you can check and report your speed to Neil Herbert at [email protected]. – see the website : http://www.dorsetforyou.com/superfast-dorset/check-broadband-speed

Traffic speed, volume and danger to other road users is of great concern to many using the B3143 valley road. A draft report has been prepared using responses from the Parish Plan, the School Travel Plan and comments from village fetes and other events. It includes results of traffic surveys by at Piddlehinton and Piddletrenthide at the end of 2011, a recent survey by a resident of Alton Pancras and accident statistics from Dorset Roadsafe for the whole 15 mile length of the road from 2003-2013. A traffic survey for Rectory Road, Piddlehinton is to be carried out shortly by Dorset County Council.

A significant factor in relieving some of this risk will lie in the achievement of an up- graded bridle / cycleway along the Valley. This was one the most popular subjects mentioned in the Parish Plan attracting 74.9% support. It may not be generally re- alised that a bridleway shares the same designation as a cycleway and can be used by either mode but in its present state, its use is limited to dry periods and mountain bikes. Upgrading will not mean seeing tarmac or any other impervious material but one suited to ordinary bicycles, pedestrians and disabled scooters but not mechani- cally-propelled vehicles other than mobility units for disabled use - it would not be a BOAT (Byway Open to All Traffic). A meeting is scheduled in late August with Dorset County Council to discuss the feasibility of such a cycleway from Piddlehinton to Pid- dletrenthide with possible extension to Alton Pancras and beyond.

It appears that the main objectives of the Plan will be :

• the upgrading of the present bridleway to be more suitable for ordinary bicycles, not just for children but also for adult users, and disabled people

• Initiate action, with evidence for the Plan, in the mounting of warning speed signs along the road, produced by children living here in the valley, training and initiating other residents in a Speedwatch monitoring cam paign in conjunction with police to encourage observation of the 30 mph speed restriction along the B3143

Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan • generate financial backing for a traffic management study of the B3143 by the traffic engineers responsible for the recent Roads in Dorset Villages Report; the intention being to produce worked evidence for measures to calm traffic at sensitive locations by environmental enhancement

• to bring forward improvement of broadband service speeds to all villages so far as it is technically feasible to do so

Much of the means for managing traffic speeds lies outside the control of the Neighbourhood Plan Working Group but it is an issue which many people feel strongly about and we will do whatever we can to see that this is addressed.

39 Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service

Nationally Trading Standards investigate high numbers of complaints about the motor trade ranging from car repairs to car sales. A few years ago Dorset Trading Standards carried out a project checking safety of cars for sale across Dorset; working with VOSA we found that up to 15% of vehicles for sale were unroadworthy. Coupled with this, Dorset Road Safe reports that fatalities involving young car drivers accounted for 24% of all road deaths in Britain in 2010 and nearly a fifth of all car occupants killed or seriously injured were young car drivers aged 17 to 24.

With Dorset Road Safe Partnership we developed a ‘50/50 car’, a tool to engage with young drivers for providing advice and education on how to buy a safe car. This typical sporty hatchback appeals to younger drivers, helps recognise what makes a car roadworthy or dangerous. A ‘zip’ splits the car and upon closer inspection, one side of the car is ready for the road and the other has numerous defects. We attend schools, colleges and events across Dorset, with Trading Standard’s ‘On the Road’ booklet providing a wealth of information, plus a checklist to help to narrow your choice of cars. We always recommend you take someone knowledgeable with you or get an independent report on the car before you buy it. See the 50/50 car and the Buy With Confidence stand at the Dorset County Show on the 7th/8th September 2013.

Piddle Valley Gardens Club

A personal perspective of Kew Gardens - Geoff Hawtin (June 24th) About 30 members were treated to an excellent foray into the history of and current practice at Kew Gardens by a Kew Gardens Trustee. Geoff Hawtin’s talk was supported by slides illustrating the work of the many scientists who over the years have worked behind the scenes growing plants from various sources to conserve plants and store seeds for future generations to enjoy and for future food supplies. A vast herbarium at Kew houses dried plant specimens from around the world as a reference bank of plants.

Geoff’s talk certainly inspired members to discuss a garden club outing to Kew Gardens in the very near future.

Frankham Farm Gardens (June 16th) A small group of members gathered in a barn at Frankham Farm for a damp picnic. They were rewarded by a fascinating tour of the extensive grounds by Andrew Templeman, the gardener. Trees had been collected from all over the world by the late Mrs Earle and planted in the grounds to create her garden; these were complimented by a vast range of flowering plants. The kitchen garden was well stocked with vegetables and fruit trees. Round every corner there was a beautiful carved seat, tree stump or vista across the fields.

There was a delicious spread of cakes for tea and a chance to chat Richard Earle before another walk through a wooded area abundant in flowering orchids. Sadly we learnt of Richard’s sudden death only a week after our visit. It is hoped that this lovely garden legacy will be preserved by his family.

Harvest Supper for members is on Saturday, October 12th - 7 for 7.30pm start. The speaker is Richard Kay 'A Garden is a lovesome thing Got Wot'.

Future meetings at Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall at 7.30 pm - all welcome, non-members £2.

Monday, September 30th, a talk from Castle Gardens about downsizing your garden when you find it is getting too much for you. Monday, October 28th ‘Developing colour in your garden’ by Philip Gamble.

47 The Twinning 2013 Twinned with Longueville, Normandy

The Twinning continued its 20th anniversary celebrations this summer with a splendid barbecue at ‘ Venta Silurum ‘ – all our thanks to John and Hilary. We enjoyed beautiful weather, John and Hilary’s lovely garden and a case of superb Jura wine, given to us in May by representatives from Longueville’s other twinned village, Labergement Ste Marie, a French village from the mountains, not far from Geneva. Other specialities from the Labergement region include delicious cheeses and the famed herbal absinthe from Pontarlier.

We have many events ahead during the autumn and winter, including an antiques evening in November with Richard Kay, followed by our popular quiz in The Thimble in January and have already started planning the return visit from our Longueville friends, which will take place in the spring of 2014. We are also close to the Twinning Association in Bradford Peverell and share ideas and experiences with them. They will be fundraising in early October with a ‘Journey to Paris‘, starring Magdalena Atkinson and the Dave Bowen Trio, from our own association.

If you would like to learn more about the Twinning, without any commitment, please phone Jo Thornton on 348670 and borrow past photo albums and other information. We are very keen to involve more Valley families and hope to have as many children as possible taking part in the next few visits and learning about French life, both here in the Valley and in Normandy.

Piddle Valley Parish Council ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Meetings The Piddle Valley Parish Council meets in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall, normally on the last Tuesday of the month, at 7.30 pm. Meetings start with a “Democratic half-hour”, during which any local resident may personally raise direct to the Council any matter that affects the Valley community. So, if you have something important to say, please either contact your local Parish Councillor or raise it during the start of the next meeting. Next meetings : 24th September, 29th October

New waste collection & recycling arrangements Dorset Waste Partnership are bringing in new arrangements for the Piddle Valley. The timetable is : • August – information letters & leaflets to all residences • 12th August to 18th October Applications will be accepted for alternative arrangements to the standard collection arrangements. Verification visits (if required) will be between August 2013 and February 2014. • December 2013 – February 2014 - new bins/boxes/bags delivered • 4th March 2014 - new service starts.

48 WWWPLANKBRIDGECOM 3HEPHERDSHUTSUPPLIERSTO 4HE.ATIONAL4RUST

49 Full details are available on www.dorsetforyou.com/recyle-for-dorset, and we will put a précis tailored for the Valley on the www.piddlevalley.info website. There will also be exhibitions where you can see the new bins and ask questions, at:

Dorchester Corn Exchange, Wednesday 4th September, 10am-1pm Village Hall, Thursday 5th Sept 5.30 - 8.30pm Tesco, Dorchester, Saturday 12th October, 10am - 1pm

Of importance is that it is possible to request a smaller recycling wheelie bin if the 240 litre bin is not necessary and, if storage space or the ability to get the wheelie bins to a safe location at the roadside are genuine problems, a service based on three of the current green recycling boxes, together with an annual supply of 52 authorised waste sacks, is available.

For those people who, through incapacity, are accepted as being unable to put their waste out themselves for collection and there is no other help available, an assisted collection service is also available.

Applications for any of these arrangements need to be made to Dorset Waste Partnership by 18th October 2013, preferably on-line through their website, or by phoning 01305 221040.

If you need assistance in dealing with any of these issues, please contact your Parish Councillor.

And while on the topic of waste :

Dog Waste There have been more complaints to the Parish Council about the amount of dog waste left on the tracks and paths around the village, particularly the section of West Lane from Rectory Rd to behind West Lodge, and the lane behind the Piddle Inn. Not only are children having to be watched every step to prevent them stepping in the problem, but a number of people appear also to think that it acceptable to bag up the material but then either just leave the bags on the track edge, or hang them on the hedgerow. This is unacceptable as the bags do not degrade, are unsightly and unhealthy. Please take a few small bags with you when you walk your dog, collect their waste and put it in your rubbish bin at home. I’m sorry to say that there is no such creature as the “Poo-Fairy”, but the Dog Warden does exist and may have to be asked to patrol the lanes if the problem persists.

Neighbourhood Plan Working Group Report. Reports from the Focus Groups will be published on the Neighbourhood Plan pages of the www.piddlevalley.info website. If anyone is interested in helping in any way, however small or large, please contact John Cox (348454) or John Browning (348981).

At the end of another school year and pupils and staff have been as busy as ever. Our topic based curriculum is going from strength to strength and the whole school enjoyed a topic on the Rainforest last half term. We kick started children’s learning by a whole school trip to Monkey World and concluded with a fabulous Rainforest outcome afternoon. All the children’s work was displayed, parents and grandparents came to enjoy and admire everyone’s achievements. The ‘Nest’ was transformed into a Rainforest throughout the topic complete with sound effects!

On 6th and 7th June, volunteers from the school and local community came in to share their passions. Children were treated to talks and hands on activities by

Sarah Hough, mum and talented artist, Penny a local bee keeper and Kath Lock one of our teaching assistants who shared her fantastic knitting, crochet and needlework. Staff and pupils were fascinated and learned a great deal, so many thanks to those involved.

Our School garden looks its loveliest, this is thanks to Mrs Wood, Mrs Walker and our gardening club. The children from Year R up to Year 4 have planted seeds, nurtured, planted out, watered and weeded. Many radishes have been nibbled and taken home and we are now hoping that the sunny weather continues so that the crops can be collected and flowers appreciated before the summer holidays ! Information on all these events and much more can be found on our website www.piddlevalley.dorset.sch.uk

Summer Term is ‘show time’ at Piddle Valley School, pupils have been busy practicing songs and brushing up their dancing. This year’s show is the very wonderful ‘Button Box’ last performed at the school seven years ago. Mrs Jo Simons (Director of Dorchester Youth Theatre) has been coming into school to rehearse and the children are very excited about the production.

Continuing the performing arts theme, Buzzards class is currently enjoying an ‘Opera’ topic; pupils have learnt about play scripts, made model theatres, and listened to and watched child friendly operas. We are very fortunate that tenor John Hudson came in to school on three afternoons to answer children’s questions, teach singing techniques and sing and record a song with the children. A visit is planned to Dorset Opera to watch the performers rehearse their summer production. Cath Rothman, Assistant Headteacher

The Piddle Valley First School ran a poster competition concerning traffic and Safety; the winner was awarded the privilege of being the first to hold a speed gun on the B3143, adjacent to the school. Following permission from the PV First School and the Police, four of the posters will be displayed through the Valley from September. See the front cover picture and some of the posters.

Beekeeping - A Beginner’s View Part 3

I got the call on June 20th from our ‘swarms liaison officer’ Lesley - “There’s a swarm in Childe Okeford. If you can help me collect it you can have it.” The swarm was the size of a small rugby ball 15ft up in an old apple tree. Helpfully the owner had a scaffold tower which enabled us to get up to the swarm and shake it into a skep, an old fashioned straw beehive. We upended the skep, one side propped up onto an old sheet hoping the queen was inside so all the bees would go in after her. We left them to settle and I returned later in the

           ))" "( "$% '%'$ %' ()' *'(+( &# ' +( # &# " Nikki "" 07577 371545 " '

55 evening only to find the skep empty and all the bees back in the tree ! Frustrating to say the least, I had to repeat the whole process with the help of Sally, my wife. Eventually we were able to secure the sheet around the skep with string, then into the car boot and a gentle drive home. A strange feeling with thousands of bees in the car, we kept our bee suits on just in case! I’d already set up a ramp leading up into the hive entrance, so I could tip the bees out and they would climb upwards and into the hive. To my surprise it worked and after 35 minutes most of the bees were inside. By now it was nearly dark, a good incentive for the bees to go in.

It was a great relief to find they were still there next morning and five days later when I inspected the colony, I found they’d been very busy bees. They had drawn out lots of comb and collected pollen and nectar. The queen had laid thousands of eggs which have since hatched into larvae, grown, pupated and emerged as young worker bees.

The young workers spend two to three weeks as ‘house bees’, keeping the hive clean, building comb, feeding the larvae, moving pollen and nectar around the hive and guarding the entrance. They then progress to become ‘foragers’, first learning to recognise their hive and their surroundings, before starting to collect pollen, nectar, water and propolis. They learn from ‘scout bees’ who can indicate the distance and direction of suitable food sources by a special ‘waggle’ dance when in the hive.

It’s always a challenge to be able to spot the queen when looking through the hive. Often, the only way you can be sure she’s there is when you find newly laid eggs. I was really lucky to spot her very quickly and she’s beautiful, larger than the workers with a much longer abdomen and obviously very fertile.

I’ve since acquired a second established colony of about the same size and the bees are preparing to overwinter. I’ve left most of the honey they’ve made to see them through but I couldn’t resist the temptation to take a small amount from each hive for my toast ! All the worker bees in a hive are females and the few males bees (drones) are kicked out to die at the end of summer.

Dear Valley Residents

It has been proposed that a cycle track be made from Piddlehinton to Piddletrenthide so that children can bicycle to school. It may sound attractive to school parents and those anxious to prove their green credentials. It is claimed that the idea is very popular - I wonder who has been asked if they approve as it is certainly not universally welcomed - a lot of us are against the project. So I have a number of points for consideration : •

57 • West Lane is used a great deal at all times of day by dog walkers, (many of them elderly) and horse riders. It would only be a matter of time before there was an accident involving bicycles, animals and people. • It is immensely treasured as a country lane where a timeless slow pace of life is paramount. • Once West Lane was opened up, though they would not be legal, it would be practically impossible to stop motorbikers, so in due course 4WD vehicles would start using it, then the travellers would get to know about it. • Would the children close gates behind them when they were in a hurry? • Who would maintain the track ? The pedestrian pathway along Piddlehinton High Street, is now overgrown and scarcely used. It took a lot of hard work by volunteers to get that up and running, but look at it now.

In practice, how often would children use it ? Once wintery weather comes, no amount of hardcore will keep the area round the gates free of mud - it has been tried time and time again. So that leaves the summer term, are they going to use it when its raining ? Would they use it if they were in a hurry to get somewhere after school ? Would they use it if they were tired, or got up a bit late ? We should ascertain how many children might use it and guess how many times a year. If 10 children use it on average 10 times a year, I suggest that the machinery used to make this track would negate all the green brownie points gained by years of cycling to school and each child would be costing rather a lot of money.

I am told there is plenty of cash for projects like this. I don't believe in waste - the money would be better spent elsewhere.

The 2013 PPVCC Shoot and Tournament took place on two consecutive weekends - the shoot kicked off our annual fund raising events on Sunday July 7th with our cricket tournament in Plush on Saturday July 13th. Pitch and grounds were brilliantly prepared and with outstanding weather, the venue has never looked better. Thanks to Tom Atkinson, Jeff Perks, George Chubb, Phil and James Ralph, plus many others who contributed to the ground looking its very best. 6 teams, 8 matches and over 150 highly competitive overs were played; local team Plush, The Phene Philanderers, Old Rippleonians, School Associates, Dorchester Hospital Porters (if anyone was ill that day, sorry all the porters were enjoying themselves at Plush CC !!) plus Dorchester Squash Club X1 ably captained by Stuart Dipple.

58 59 The standard of cricket throughout the day was of the highest order, with some fine individual fielding, bowling and batting performances. Ultimately the Wooden Spoon was fought out between The Phene Philanderers and Dorchester Hospital Porters, with the Phene Philanderers coming out as deserved victors. The final was between Plush and Bournemouth School Associates, an outstanding game, some memorable Plush performances with skipper Declan Chubb brilliantly guiding the team to Tournament winners.

As always with a tournament and shoot of this size with over 80 people attending the Shoot and in excess of 120 people for the Cricket Tournament, we are enormously grateful to all who contribute to our Shoot and Tournament Weekend. Special thanks to the ground team, Jo Sherwood for loan of his marvellous BBQ, Phil Ralph for manning said BBQ, Turbo for loan of all the bar equipment and Geraint Chubb for manning the bar all weekend, all cake and sandwich makers, James Ralph and friend for selling the raffle tickets. Special thanks also to The Piddle Inn, The Gaggle of Geese for their beer donations, and to Nigel and Sarah of The Poachers Inn for help with the licence, beer, wine and general support to PPVCC - it is much appreciated by all.

Heartfelt thanks to Peter Hiscock and Tom Atkinson for organising the Shoot Day on Sunday with their contacts from Northamptonshire of John Spademan and team, who put together and delivered a very good 5 stands and a flush for 60 guns on the Sunday. The winning ladies shot was Sarah from Castle Gardens of Sherborne, with Terry the winning men’s shot from Westbury Gun Club, who also won the overall team trophy. Thanks to Ashley Rawlings, Stuart Dipple, Richard Cake, Andy Langlands, Craig Kellaway, George Chubb, Tim and Nick Mitchell, for all helping with the stands and Shoot for the day, and to James Boughey for the use of his John Deere loader. If I have left some people out then please accept my apologies for your omission.

Our club captain Graeme Stephens organised and managed the two days brilliantly; we are grateful to club president Peter Hiscock for the continued use of his land for PPVCC. Thank you to all the players, supporters and helpers over the two days. The monies raised will be put into the general improvement and maintenance of the Club and facilities and to continue a policy of further encouraging younger girls and boys to play at this wonderful ground.

We are always on the lookout for new players, so if you, your family and or friends are interested in joining, then please ring either Riou Baxter 07976 328916, Tim Mitchell 07796 857744 or Graeme Stephens 07899 663773. For our youth team under11’s & 9’s, ring Tim Gillette on 01300 345724.

This is my final year as Chair of Plush and Piddle Valley Cricket Club, so I would like to thank all the players and supporters over the last six years, who have helped maintain and indeed transform the Club onto the footings and standing that it now enjoys, this combined with the winning of Division 3 of the Dorchester & District Read & Woodruff Evening League, means that your local cricket club is in good hands for the future of our team and local community.

Riou Baxter, Chairman

Flu Vaccination Clinics If you are aged over 65, pregnant, are a Carer or suffer from an illness such as asthma, diabetes or coronary heart disease, you are strongly advised to have a flu vaccination - and a Pneumococcal vaccine if you haven’t had one of these before. Following NHS England guidelines, flu vaccinations are offered only to those who are over 65 years of age, are pregnant , Carers or who suffer from chronic disease. Our flu vaccination clinics will be held on Saturday mornings on the 5th and 12th October. If you fall into any of these categories, please telephone the surgery to make an appointment for a Flu Vaccination at one of these clinics.

Shingles The new shingles immunisation programme is being introduced this year comprising a single injection to last a lifetime, offered, along with the flu vaccination, to patients who are aged 70 and 79 (but not aged 71-78 !!) You don’t need to do anything about this. If you are in one of the age groups recommended to have this vaccination, it will be offered to you at your flu vaccination appointment.
