The Bridge Educational Trust

The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.

The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered.

At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible, provided they contain an educational element.

The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal education has been interrupted.

During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career.

Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in May, September and January. Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL or by emailing [email protected]. Applications by post or email should be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they are to be considered.

Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Hannah Murphy (348564), Richard Drewe (348253), Nick Harland (348272), Olivia Steven (348909)

We receive fresh fruit and vegetable deliveries daily, our prices are very competitive, so why not give us a try? We stock in-season fruit and vegetables, and can order large quantities if needed. We can supply speciality breads such as cottage loaves, French sticks and large wholemeal cobbers from Bakeries – ideal for entertaining. Balls the Butchers are happy to cut meat to individual customers’ requirements. We have a new supplier of fresh chicken, reared at Piddlehinton from ‘Piddle Valley Chickens’. The birds are given time to grow slowly on a natural diet with corn, grass and clover which gives their traditional chicken flavour and succulent meat. Living in large grassy paddocks and in small flocks these are the happiest chicken in Dorset! I support this very ethical new business and wish them well. I thank you all for your continued support of the shop and I am sure this will help it to go from strength to strength.

Gutters Blocked?

Why not get in touch for a free no obligation quote to have your gutters cleared and facias and soffits cleaned. We operate from the ground using CCTV to ensure the gutters have been emptied completely, we can clean to a height of 50ft.

Gutters need to be cleared of debris in order for water to be carried away from the house so it does not cause damage to your property by potentially back filling and flowing back into the property causing damp. In order to keep them working as they should we usually book these in once or twice a year depending on the surroundings i.e.trees, hedges etc.

Rector’s Ramblings

Wisdom

We are creatures of habit. Each day we wake up on the same side of the bed. We wear the same clothes, often worn the previous day, we eat the same type of breakfast, and we drive the car on the same route to school or work. Most of what we do, is set in a groove, much of our thinking is done within this groove and much of our thinking is based upon assumptions.

Whether we like it or not, we have a world view. We have a set of beliefs and assumptions and we look for evidence that bolsters our view of the world. If we believe all rats are black, we will look for evidence that all rats are black, reinforcing our conviction. This is a poor rule. We should be looking for rats that are not black. It is very easy to find information that fits our world view and to discount the world view of others.

Einstein said, ‘Imagination is more important than knowledge’. Imaginative thinking is often associated with divergent thinking, a logical pathway which considers all points of view, including what is unfashionable, unconventional, the ridiculous and the outlandish.

As an Engineer, I was part of a team that employs comparative thinking – collecting information – that reinforces our understanding of how something works, however when our project was under serious review, we were then asked to attend ‘brain storming meetings,’ in which divergent thinking would explore all types of points of view.

Many great thinkers understand that their worldview is open and not fixed, within Christianity there are many great Christian Mystics and spiritual writers that understand Christianity, makes best sense of the world however, it is an open system of belief- not a closed one.

Thomas Merton (1915-1968) a Benedictine monk who was very confident with his spirituality spent a great deal of time in conversation with Buddhist Monks, Hinduism, Taoism, Sufism and Jainism. Merton was a great spiritual thinker who was aware of his assumptions and the incompleteness of his world view. Merton, struggled with complex questions about God’s existence, moral values and the role of organized religion. Merton became a great source of hope with his lucid spiritual writings after the Second War and went onto inspire Christians to live richer, deeper and more justice-minded lives of faith.

We are creatures of habit that live in a groove. We can live with a world view that is closed or a world view that is open, we can collect information that bolsters our assumptions, or we can be more divergent in our thinking, employing the imaginative part of our brains – to see the world through the eyes of others- and risk the possibility of learning from them.

‘’The biggest temptation is – to settle for too little’’- Merton

Fr, Roger Butcher www.piddlevalley.info 31 Eric Groome 1934–2016

Eric was the seventh of eight children born to John and Daisy Groome of Granville Road, Parkstone. His father died of tuberculosis when he was 9 years old and thereafter Eric took on a practical, fatherly role to help his family through difficult times. In particular he developed an interest for gardening and growing vegetables, where Eric’s love for gardening must have first developed.

At the end of the Second World War, Eric’s saving grace was the return of the woodwork teacher to Kemp Welch School who reopened the woodwork classroom. As a young teenager Eric developed a passion for working in wood and on leaving school he secured a wood working apprenticeship with the company Muscle White and Simpkins in . In 1954 Eric was called up to take part in National Service where he was a woodworker in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, stationed in South Korea.

On returning from South Korea, Eric was employed by a high class joinery company, EW Kingsbury and Sons. This gave Eric the opportunity to make high quality furniture, particularly in Walnut, which established him as a master cabinet maker.

In 1958 he married his childhood sweetheart Jean Brooklyn at St Clements Church, Parkstone followed by a honeymoon in Jersey. Eric and Jean had a bungalow built on a plot of land they had purchased at Corfe Way in Broadstone which became a happy family home for the next 30 years with their two daughters, Paulette and Beverly. To support his family Eric swapped his cabinet making career for working in the caravan industry at BK Caravans. He progressed from foreman, to designing caravan interiors,

32 www.piddlevalley.info to eventually becoming a director until his retirement from BK Bluebird in 1991.

Eric and Jean made the perfect gardening couple - their garden at Broadstone was truly spectacular. They were keen and enthusiastic members of the Broadstone Horticultural Society and Eric was the gardener who won many first prizes and trophies, especially for his vegetable entries. He will be remembered for his incredible gardening knowledge and how he was always so willing to share this knowledge. He encouraged and supported other like-minded gardeners to strive to do their best and aim higher, which ultimately raised the standards within the garden society.

In 1991 Eric and Jean started a new chapter in their lives when they moved to Alton Pancras. Both now retired, (most people would be sitting back and taking life a little more easy), Eric and Jean spent the next twenty five years transforming their house and garden into a lovely home.

A talented and passionate gardener, Eric will be remembered for his desire to always work on a grand scale! This included the mammoth greenhouse, the rockery designed and created by himself using two lorry loads of Purbeck stone and his rather unique pergola structure.

Once Eric and Jean had settled into village life at Alton Pancras, they soon joined the Piddle Valley Gardens Club and both became committee members. At that time the Club required new energy and innovation. Using his expertise at Broadstone, Eric’s influence and impact was pronounced and immediate. This resulted in the reintroduction of the Spring Flower Show and greater interest in producing vegetables and flowers of the highest quality. As a consequence membership of the Club increased substantially.

The Summer Show of 2000, which took place in a marquee as part of the Millennium Celebrations, received high praise from the judge who commented that the quality of the produce was one of the best he had ever judged at a village event and the first he had experienced in a marquee for many years. To a large extent this success was due to Eric’s input. The sheer number of prizes he won at shows is unlikely to be repeated in the future. Mention must also be made of the marvellous displays of flowers and vegetables that Eric produced to decorate the Memorial Hall for Club harvest suppers.

Later in his life Eric found another love. He joined the local art club where he spent many long hours creating botanical art. His paintings were exquisite and it seemed that yet again Eric was able to turn his magical hands to a new skill. Each year family and friends awaited the arrival of Eric and Jean’s Christmas card with great anticipation, knowing it would have an Eric masterpiece on the front. www.piddlevalley.info 33 Eric was a great asset to have in the valley. He also got involved in local projects such as the millennium seat and making two notice boards for the village.

Eric was everyone’s friend. He will be remembered for his perfectionism and his inspiration to others. Eric was quiet, unassuming and yet generous with his expertise. He had true magic in his hands whether it was in the garden, in the workshop or with a paintbrush. The impact of Eric’s twenty-five years in the Piddle Valley cannot be overstated. The Garden Club will not see the like of him again.

It was Eric’s wish to remain at home during the last months of his life, which was made possible by the amazing care and support of Dr Dobbs and the district nurses at Cerne Abbas Surgery, the Park House care team in Weymouth and the local Marie Curie nurses. Eric passed away peacefully at his home with Jean and his two daughters at his side. He also leaves behind five grandchildren.

36 www.piddlevalley.info Support And Information For Older People

If you are over 50 there is a free resource you can call on to help you find out what you need to know about services and activities that are important to you in your community. It is called POPP (Partnership for Older People Programme). POPP is funded by DCC and NHS Dorset to improve the quality of life for older people by ensuring that opportunities are put in place locally to promote health and wellbeing, independence , preventative services and activities . Locally there are two people you can contact: Ellis Ford – who is what is termed a POPP Wayfinder and Julian English – a POPP Champion.

Ellis will provide one-to-one support and signposting and can visit people in their own homes. He has a wealth of information and relevant contacts at his fingertips and if he doesn’t know the answer to any question immediately he will find out.

Julian challenges the way that the statutory bodies deliver services to older people, so if you have any concerns you should raise them with him .Julian will also support groups to fund new activities and initiatives that help older people remain active, healthy and involved with their local community. In Cerne POPP has seed funded the Giant Social and the Community Defibrillator .

Alton Pancras

AP Sallie Johnson’s request that would anyone thinking of giving her an 80th birthday present at her recent party at the Piddle Inn, instead give a donation to Cancer Research UK, raised £705. Popular or what?

AP Angela Williamson nee Collins of Weymouth visited the church recently and recorded “church beautifully kept.” She grew up and was married here in 1969. Church team take a bow!

AP Frances Mallet’s 90th birthday celebration was stylish and fun, just like the lady herself, and showed yet again that the Memorial Hall and Rebecca Green’s catering make it a great venue for personalised celebrations such as this.

AP Ride and Stride is the annual sponsored tour of as many Dorset churches as you can visit on the day – Saturday 10 September, between 10am and 5pm – on bicycle, horse, pram, roller-blades or even feet. Tea and cakes will be available all day at our own church, especially if residents volunteer for a short shift, and other locals ‘drop- in’.

AP The church has a bumper collection of new pre-read paperbacks, thanks to several generous contributors. They will not ‘winter’ in the church for fear of deterioration so 10 September might be a good morning to call in.

AP Latest addition to www.piddlevalley.info/history is AP House Survey 2016 which gives a brief description of all dwellings known to have existed in our village and occasionally, surnames of some early occupants – but no recent or current residents.

AP The village appeal for Christian Aid raised £321.95. Sincere thanks to contributors.

AP The late Eric Groome’s dedication to the valley’s Gardens Club included quietly giving plants to potential new members to bring on to boost entries at the annual show. He was also a superb illustrator of greetings cards. Fortunate recipients would never think of throwing one away.

AP Why does an AP resident have yellow flails on his walking sticks? They are fluorescent shoelaces that catch the eye of approaching drivers, especially in poor visibility. Timpson shoe repairers in the Waitrose arcade sell a range of colours at £4.50 a pair.

40 www.piddlevalley.info Piddlehinton

The Piddlehinton Church Fete was an amazing success with a profit of £5,472. Donations have been sent to the Village Hall, the Millennium Green and the Air Ambulance. Once again we were blessed with fine weather - the first for many weeks and so warm that we sat around the BBQ until late in the evening. The Cowboys and Indians who came brought the wild southwest to the Old Rectory where the highlights of this special occasion were the Bucking Bronco, Steve Brackstone’s steam engine and the pony rides to mention only a few. The children’s races and the dog show produced a bonanza of rosettes and all the stalls did a roaring trade, especially the ice creams and the Pimms, both of which were sold out in the glorious sunshine. On the day we had an army of helpers and a huge thanks must go to all them.

We would love some new committee members next year. Please ring the Secretary (Gay Hanbury) on 348465 if you can help. Evening meetings are not long and duties are not onerous as long as there are lots of us.

Piddlehinton Harvest Festival at St Mary’s 7 pm on Friday October 7th with Harvest Supper in the Village Hall afterwards

Please do come if you can - everyone is very welcome. Decorating the church will start at 9.30 that morning and lots of help will be needed as this is always a special occasion in the village. All gifts of flowers, fruit and veg would be very welcome and will be auctioned for charity at the Supper. Please leave them in the porch or bring them early, i.e. in good time for the decorating.

Piddlehinton Millennium Green – Could you be a FRoG? We are very lucky to have a Millennium Green in the village of Piddlehinton. The Green is a Registered Charity, owned by the people of Piddlehinton, but is for the use of everyone, and looked after by Volunteer Trustees who are responsible for overseeing its upkeep, maintenance and safety. The Trustees also have the task of raising funds to pay for the mowing of the grass, repairs on The Green and insurance (at present this totals around £1600 per annum overall). The ongoing running costs are all met by fundraising and private donations.

One of the ways of raising funds, from those who appreciate The Green, is the Friends of the Millennium Green Scheme (FRoG) whereby donors agree to pay an annual subscription (minimum suggestion of £5). Would you consider becoming a Friend of The Green? Payments can be made by cheque (payable to Piddlehinton Millennium Green Trust), by cash or Bank Direct Debit. If you are a UK taxpayer, the Trust can also benefit from Gift Aid donations. Forms are available from Susan Dredge (01300 348120) or [email protected]. www.piddlevalley.info 41 In addition, to keep the Green and its equipment in the best of condition, various necessary jobs need to be done such as river clearing, trimming and re-weaving the Living Willow Dragon, along with general maintenance and help at fund-raising events. If you feel you would be able to help in any way, please do let a Trustee know. Registered Charity No: 1074956

Summer charity concert 8th July 2016 The Concert this year featured local people with immense talent with a range of musical skills, Ruby Green, Lauren and Sophie Butcher representing the youth of the valley with wonderful vocals; Simon Grainger with piano solos. Dave Bowen and Tony Pope, the mellow sound of jazz, Amity Hill, who accompanied herself on the ukulele, singing folk. Members of the Piddle Valley Players sang excerpts from “Carousel”, their musical this year and Camilla Foster Mitchell and John Hudson performed arias from the world of Opera. As a little extra we persuaded Prue Jakeman to join us in singing our own adaptation of “Three Little Maids from School”!

This year’s Concert has enabled us to share £500 equally between our 4 chosen charities; All Saints Church, The Memorial Hall, Piddle Valley First School and Ducks and Drakes Cancer Trust. This is the seventh Concert that we have organised over the past 5 years and the total we have donated to Charity has been £5826. We have always had the support and encouragement of the clergy and the PCC which has been much appreciated. We have also had the help of so many kind people who have moved furniture, run the bar, donated canapes, run the raffle, printed tickets, posters, etc.

In the early years we were blessed with several sponsors, which made a great difference financially. Our objectives in putting on the Concerts have not just been to raise money for local Charities, but also to provide entertainment for local people, by local people. We are so fortunate to live in this beautiful part of Dorset with a warm and caring community. What amazing talent there is amongst us! Thanks must go

Alistair Bunkall has very kindly agreed to give a talk on behalf of Barnardos on Friday, 14th October at 6.30pm at Frampton Village Hall.

Alistair is the Defence Correspondent for Sky News and one of the country’s leading broadcasters on security and foreign affairs.

The talk will focus on his recent trip to the world’s most secretive state, North Korea. He will reveal how it took years of unpublicised talks to secure an invitation from Pyongyang and share stories about life reporting from the hermit kingdom. He will also talk about his experiences covering wars, travelling the world with senior politicians, and life on the road as a foreign correspondent.

[Alistair has covered the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and South Sudan and humanitarian crises and natural disasters around the world. In 2015 he became one of the few journalists in the world to report from North Korea. Much of his work in the past 18 months has focused on counter-terrorism and the rise of Islamic State. He has been a key analyst for the channel during terror attacks in Paris, Brussels, Nice and elsewhere.

He has travelled to the migrants routes, over the Mediterranean from Libya and through Turkey to Greece. His undercover filming in a refugee camp revealed the dreadful conditions the refugees were being housed in. Most recently he flew to Ankara for an exclusive interview with the Turkish Prime Minister in the days after the failed coup.]

Tickets cost £15 each to include a glass of wine and canapés. Please send a cheque payable to Barnardos to Penny Wykes-Sneyd, Garden Cottage, West Compton, Dorchester DT2 0EY by 5th October together with your email address for confirmation. Dorset County Council

The future of mobile libraries has been decided

Dorset County Council’s Cabinet has voted to maintain one home mobile library service van and withdraw three mobile library service vans.

This decision follows a consultation with library users and local town and parish councils to look at alternative ways to access the library service.

People who are unable to access a library due to a disability or frailty will continue to have access to books, and other reading material delivered to their homes through a partnership with the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS).

The council are also encouraging community transport to help people have access to libraries. And we will continue to take the home mobile library service van to residential homes.

Cllr Deborah Croney, Dorset County Council cabinet member for learning and skills, said:

“These changes will help us focus provision of the mobile library service on people of all ages who cannot get to a library building.

48 www.piddlevalley.info “The consultation has given us a clear understanding of the issues and we will use this information with the local knowledge gained from the mobile library officers to work with local communities.”

The consultation identified that social isolation is a concern for some people and the council’s Partnership for Older People Programme (POPP) community development team has started working with communities to address the social aspect that the mobile library currently serves.

Dorset’s library service has joined the LibrariesWest consortium which means customers will be able to access libraries, ‘coast to coast’ from the Bristol Channel to the south coast. In some parts of Dorset the nearest library is in Somerset, and being part of the consortium means they can still access library services.

Dorset Police

Dorset Police receives over 1300 calls to 101 and over 200 emergency calls to 999 every day. These levels increase in the summer months, and therefore the demands on calls handlers is considerable.

We are seeking to improve performance figures for the 101 line through promotion of the correct use of the number, alongside the use of the other contact methods as an alternative for reporting non-urgent matters. www.piddlevalley.info 49 The new Dorset Police website was launched in June 2016. This boasts various online reporting and enquiry tools making the process quicker and easier than calling 101. The online services offered include: • Report a crime or incident • Request a call back • Message for an officer • Make a complaint • Access information • Leave compliments and feedback • Report a Hate Crime • Email us • Make a general enquiry

A large percentage of calls received by Dorset Police are for other agencies and not a matter for the police. Please ensure you are contacting the most appropriate agency to assist you with your enquiry.

You should contact your local council with issues such as: Roads and transport • Report a road issue • Live travel alerts • Parking issues • Driveway obstructions Recycling and rubbish • Bin collections • Recycling • Litter • Dog fouling Planning and housing • Street lighting Leisure and culture • Parks Environmental Health • Noise complaints including parties • Pest control • Lost/found animals • Fly tipping • Bonfires and fireworks • Trading standards

Report My Loss allows residents to report lost property for free with information being searchable by any UK police forces. This process saves you valuable time as you do not need to telephone 101 or visit your local police station. Found property should be handed into the owners or management of the property or public transport where they have been found.

Found items that should be handed into police stations are: • Mobile phones, laptops, cameras – anything with a memory card • Personal ID - such as passport, driving licence, bank card, utility bill • Drugs, poison, hazardous substance/liquid • Firearms, ammunition, explosives • Significant amounts of cash

Dorset Trading Standards

Turning back the clock. Car ‘clocking’, the practice of rewinding a car’s mileage reading is estimated to have increased last year. For unscrupulous traders it is an easy way to make money as a car’s value can increase up to £10,000 by reducing the mileage of a vehicle by using a digital device that plugs into the car’s electronics. If you buy a car with an altered mileage then the timing for necessary services and safety checks will also be incorrect.

Trading Standards up and down the country investigate complaints of cars having been ‘clocked’. A Warwickshire car dealer was recently jailed for twelve months after admitting to ‘clocking’ cars and his mechanic for six months for forging documents such as MOT certificates. These days cars that have been ‘clocked’ are less likely to be found on the forecourt and more likely to be found on auction websites, social media and small ads. such as Ebay, Facebook and Gumtree.

When buying a second hand car there are things that you can look out for: • Chips on the paintwork may indicate lots of motorway driving; • Worn rubber pedals and steering wheels indicate lots of use.

The average car travels 10,000 miles a year so if the car looks like it has more wear and tear than expected it may have been ‘clocked’. Checking a vehicle’s paperwork such as the service record and MOT history can help determine genuine mileage. Check MOTs

Trading standards catch pet fraudsters A horse dealer was recently sent to prison for misdescribing horses. The dealer conned her clients out of thousands of pounds for falsely describing the health and condition of her horses. The horses were listed for sale in national publications as ‘wonderful character’, ‘no health issues’, and ‘family friend’. The seller claimed to be a ‘private seller’ and used various aliases and contact details. Once people had bought a horse from the dealer they then found it had numerous health problems which required expensive vet treatment. Many customers paid in the region of £5000 for their horse when it was worth just £600.

Since 2005 all horses in the UK must be accompanied by a ‘Horse Passport’ and since July 2009 all horses are required to be microchipped with the chip’s number recorded on that passport. When buying a horse or pony make sure that you are given the passport, it is an offence for the seller not to transfer it to you. Check the description in the passport matches the horse you’re buying, that the microchip implanted in the horse matches the passport and that the last registered owner is the person you are buying the horse from. A vet can scan the horse for you to ascertain the microchip number. We would always recommend that when buying a horse you have the horse vetted first. Consider asking for loan with view to buy (LWVTB). If you are not sure, seek professional guidance such as a BHS Instructor to view the horse with you. Never part with your money before you are completely satisfied.

Piddle Valley Country Dancing Group

Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall, Mondays, 2.15–4.15pm.

In her TV programme How to Stay Young, Angela Rippon discovered that ‘dancing is a better way to improve fitness than going to the gym,’ as it exercises the brain as well as the body - allegedly! Besides this, our group has great fun, we laugh at our mistakes and cheer our successes and at a mere £1.50p per week which includes tea/ coffee and biscuits, must be the cheapest form of entertainment in the Valley.

Just one problem - we badly need more dancers, male and female, if the group is to survive, so please, even if you haven’t danced since your schooldays and whatever your age or level of fitness, you will find a warm welcome with us.

Our next term will start on Monday 12 September, times as above. Flat, well-fitting shoes are recommended. No need to enrol, just turn up to the first meeting, we’ll be very pleased to see you. Jane Preston

Piddle Valley Gardens Club

Summer Social, 2016 There were a few anxious hours for the PVGC committee-members on Sunday 10 July as they awoke to grey skies and rain. Would our Summer Lunch have to be re-located to the Memorial Hall like last year? They held their collective nerve, set up tables in Mike and Sally Howard-Tripp’s large, shady garden at Kingsmead in Piddletrenthide and crossed their fingers. By twelve noon the skies had cleared and by one o’clock when the club members, carrying chairs, drinks, food - and brollies - arrived, the sun was shining, the wet grass steaming and everyone could breathe a sigh of relief.

As usual there was ample, delicious food, all kinds of salads to go with the ham and as for the puddings! Pavlovas galore, chocolate puds, rhubarb jelly, delicious creamy concoctions, shortbread biscuits, strawberries...one lady, spotted going back for a generous second helping was heard to remark, ‘Well, we don’t want to give them the trouble of taking it all away again, do we?’ www.piddlevalley.info 55

Piddle Valley: August 2016 Current situation The Piddle Valley has experienced flooding historically from a number of sources. Previous studies

and reports have been completed to identify issues and consider options to reduce the risk of flooding. Over the years a number of improvements have been made, including the Piddletrenthide Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS).

As a result of the flooding experienced throughout the valley on 7/8 February 2016 a community drop- in session was held on 25 February to collate information about the event. A review of the issues experienced has been conducted in partnership by the Environment Agency (EA), Dorset County Council (DCC), Water (WW) and District Council (WDDC). A further community drop-in session was held on 29 June to provide an update of interim findings, actions already taken and next steps.

www.piddlevalley.info 57 The best of it was that, after a leisurely cup of coffee, as we drifted away back home, thoroughly satisfied, we heard that Andy Murray was well on the way to winning Wimbledon - again. Congratulations to all those who gambled on the weather and - like Andy - won!

Summer Outing, 2016 On Monday 27 June, 20 members of the PVGC set off, 17 by minibus and 3 by car, on a beautiful summer’s day to visit Rosemoor, the Royal Horticultural Society’s garden at Great Torrington in Devon. Our excellent driver, Ian Condon, chose an attractive cross-country route and we arrived just as the restaurant was opening up for high quality lunches.

Our organisers had chosen the date well as the roses, for which the garden is famous, in well-laid out beds in the formal part of the garden, were in full bloom, mostly heavy with scent and clearly labelled - out came our notebooks with names optimistically scribbled down. If every member of the Gardens Club buys even one rose on their list, the Piddle Valley should be ‘blooming beautiful’ in 2017.

Equally attractive and interesting was the informal, park-like part of the garden, past the large lily-pond, the tumbling stream, the Brash (children’s play area) and the sweeping wild-flower meadows, purple with knapweed, leading to the orchard, where we could only sigh enviously at the soft fruit, vegetable and salad beds nearby - well protected from rabbits, we noticed - on our way for a refreshing cup of tea at the Wisteria Cafe. This gave us the energy to tackle the walk through the woods and explore the series of small, enclosed gardens full of sun-loving plants, stone steps and sculpture, thence to the Arboretum on our way to admire the view across the whole garden from the recently restored gazebo. What a day to remember! Even four hours was not enough to see everything although we were all ready to sit back, snooze and let Ian drive us safely back to the Piddle Valley. Many, many thanks to all the organisers. Jane Preston

62 www.piddlevalley.info Piddle Valley Losses in The Great War~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

September 1916 saw the middle stages of the Battle of the Somme which had started on 1st July. Three Piddlehinton men lost their lives during this month.

14th September 1916 Private Albert 3rd Battalion Genadier Guards

Albert Thomas Hardy was born in 1891, the son of Josiah and Hester Hardy. He was a policeman and, as befitted a policeman, he joined the 3rd Grenadier Guards. He was sent to France in October 1915 and would have seen action before the Battle of the Somme commenced.

On 14th September, the 3rd Grenadier Guards was one of the attacking battalions which attempted to take the ruined village of Ginchy and push back the German lines. They had gone into their front line trenches in the evening of the 13th and were given rum and sandwiches at 4.00am on Thursday 14th. Their covering artillery barrage on Ginchy opened at 6.00am and the attack started twenty minutes later. They had to cross about 600 yards to reach the first German line.

They came under heavy machine gun fire when halfway across no man’s land which broke up their formation and they became mixed up with other units. They managed to to reach the enemy front line but the confusion caused by the loss of formation resulted in a failure to take the second line. The attack ended in stalemate.

Casualties were high. Out of 22 officers, 17 were killed or wounded. One of the officers who died of wounds the day after battle was Lt. Raymond Asquith, the Prime Minister’s son. Of other ranks, 395 were either killed or wounded. Albert Thomas Hardy was one of those killed and his body was never found. He is commemorated on the huge Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.

His name also appears on the Dorset Police Memorial which is now at Police Headquarters, Winfrith.

Incidentally the date of his death on the Piddlehinton Memorial is incorrectly shown as 26th September 1916.

www.piddlevalley.info 63 26th September 1916 Private James Levi Dyke Private James George Samways Both of the 5th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment

The 5th Dorsets had their baptism of fire at Gallipoli, where they served from 6th August to 16th December 1915. James Dyke was an early recruit and had been with the Battalion at Gallipoli. Born in Piddlehinton in 1886, he was a son of James and Hester Dyke and worked as an agricultural labourer. He had four brothers and one sister.

James George Samways was also born in Piddlehinton. An only son, he lived with his parents in Lantern Cottage. He was not with the 5th Dorsets at Gallipoli, having joined up in 1915.

The attack which took their lives was an attempt to capture the German Positions round the ruined village of Thiepval. The village lay on the ridge and was surrounded by well- defended strongpoints which had resisted all attempts to take them since the start of the Battle of the Somme on 1st July.

On 26th September a major attack was launched on Thiepval by the 11th and 18th Divisions. 5th Dorsets were one of 12 battalions in the 11th Division. Their objectives were Mouquet Farm and the Zollern Redoubt. Mouquet Farm had already resisted attack on 1st July which involved the 1st Dorsets amongst other battalions. That attack took the life of Lance-Corporal Walter Thompson of Piddletrenthide (see News & Views for July/August 2016).

The 5th Dorsets were in support and were to advance at 12.35pm to consolidate the attack on Mouquet Farm. As they advanced over open ground they were caught by a disastrous German barrage and dozens of men went down. This barrage caused platoons and companies to become mixed up and the attack lost cohesion. They had a hard fight to take their first objective.

Having gained Mouquet Farm, they came under heavy machine gun fire, but failed to dislodge the Germans. The Regimental History says that the whole situation became very obscure. However, the Dorsets and their adjoining battalions managed to hold their positions near the Zollern Redoubt and by 5.30pm on 27th September the trenches were cleared of the enemy.

The 5th Dorsets had gone into battle roughly 600 strong and nearly two-thirds of these became casualties (i.e. killed, wounded or missing). James Dyke’s body was not found and his name in inscribed on the Thiepval Memorial. James Samways died of wounds and is buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery.

64 www.piddlevalley.info I find this action very sad. Two men from Piddlethinton, who would have known each other well, left the peace of the Dorset countryside to be slaughtered in the mud and desolation of the Somme battle and for what end did they lose their lives?

27th October Private Charles Henry Sawyer (Alton Pancras) 1st Battallion, The Border Regiment

Charles Henry Sawyer was born in in 1885, one of eight children produced by John and Ruth Sawyer. The family moved to Alton Pancras where the father was an agricultural labourer.

Charles went to and was living in Battersea when he enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment and was later transferred to the 1st Battalion the Border Regiment. The Battalion had served in Gallipoli in 1915 and came to France in March 1916. It spent some time in the Ypres Salient before being sent to the Somme in early October.

Private Charles Sawyer is recorded as having died on 27th October 1916. He was not killed in action nor did he die of wounds. He died of disease, but what that disease was is not recorded.

He is buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt l’Abbe, to the south-west of the town of Albert. Heilly lay behind the lines and was the location of a large casualty clearing station. Possibly Charles was receiving treatment there when he died.

Love to sing festive songs and carols?

New to the area? Want to make new friends and have a sing to get in the festive spirit? Then come along and join our friendly choir for the autumn session starting Tuesday, 27th September.

We meet every Tuesday night at St Mary’s Church Room, Puddletown from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and welcome anyone who enjoys singing. There is no scary audition and you don’t have to read music.

The Weatherbury Singers have been established for nearly 20 years and our membership comes from a wide area. During that time and through our concerts, carol singing and sing days, we have raised money for music in local schools and for various projects and charities close to our members’ hearts.

Make a date in your diary to join us on 27th September for our first rehearsal and open evening. For more details and to register your interest, please contact Judy Cooper on 01305 260284 or email: [email protected]. We look forward to meeting you!

Flu Vaccination Clinics

If you are aged over 65, pregnant, are a Carer or suffer from an illness such as asthma, diabetes or coronary heart disease, you are strongly advised to have a flu vaccination - and a Pneumococcal vaccine if you haven’t had one of these before. Following NHS guidelines, flu vaccinations are offered only to those who are over 65 years of age, are pregnant, Carers or who suffer from chronic disease.

Our flu vaccination clinics will be held on Saturday mornings on 1st and 8th October, between 8.30 and 12pm.

If you fall into any of these categories, please telephone the surgery to make an appointment for a Flu Vaccination at one of these clinics.

Thank you

Goodbye from Carol Taylor

At the end of September I will be leaving Puddletown Surgery, where I have been practice manager for 29 years. I am really looking forward to this, but I know I will miss a lot of things about Puddletown. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work in such a lovely place. My successor is Marcus Pawson. Marcus comes to us with a great deal of experience of practice management in his practice in Yeovil. I am confident that he is the best possible person to take care of our doctors, staff and patients. It’s good to know I’m leaving the practice in safe hands.

CERNE ABBAS SURGERY: CHANGE OF OPENING HOURS

From 1st August 2016 the dispensary will be open from 9am to 7pm so you will be able to collect your medicines throughout the day, Monday to Friday. In addition, from 1st August 2016, the surgery will be offering appointments specifically for our working patients on weekday evenings until 7pm. This will replace our Saturday opening, which has not been widely used, with the last Saturday session being on 30th July.

If you have any comments or concerns about the new opening hours, please speak to a member of the surgery team.

Information about the surgery and other healthcare support is available on our website www.cerneabbassurgery.co.uk

CQC Inspection

Many of you will be aware of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and its role is to monitor, inspect and regulate health and social care services. Three inspectors visited Cerne Abbas Surgery on 25th February 2016 and the report is now available on our website http://www. cerneabbassurgery.co.uk/2016/05/11/cqc-inspection-report/ . I am pleased to say that the practice was rated as good in all areas and achieved outstanding for responsiveness.

The only point raised by the inspectors during the visit was the need for a hearing loop which we have now purchased for use in the surgery. If you would benefit from using this when you attend your appointments with us, please notify reception when you arrive and they will arrange for it to be available.

Milton Abbas Surgery: Autumn 2016 seasonal flu vaccinations This year we are holding our dedicated flu vaccination clinic for patients registered at Milton Abbas Surgery on Saturday 8th October from 8.30-12.30 pm at Winterborne Whitechurch Village Hall. We will contact you directly if you are eligible to receive a flu vaccination. If you need transport to get to the flu clinic on that day, ring Neighbourcar on 881709 by 6th October and they will arrange a ‘car share’.

Experienced marathon runner, Chris Eade, is taking on the ultimate challenge of completing two consecutive marathons over two days in the Moroccan Sahara Desert in October 2016.

Chris, the son of Home-Start West Dorset Trustee Dr Ruth Eade, has already completed several ultra marathons raising crucial funds for various charities. Explaining why he has chosen to support Home-Start, Chris said “As a father who recognises the importance of stable family life to the well-being of children, I consider it a privilege to contribute to this charity which has a successful track-record in supporting young families”

Home-Start West Dorset are delighted and honoured that Chris has chosen to support the charity this year and request that everyone considers supporting Chris by donating on his Just Giving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ChrisEadeSahara4HomeStart

Home-Start West Dorset is your local family support charity offering non-judgemental, practical and emotional support to families in need of help coping with issues such as isolation, illness, multiple births, disability, bereavement, depression or those who are just struggling with parenting and the challenges of family life with young children. Trained home-visiting volunteers help to build the family’s confidence and ability to cope. Last year we supported 99 families, with 245 children benefitting from support.
