The Bridge Educational Trust

The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.

The objects of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at school, college, university or other educational establishment.

Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered.

The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose, after normal education has been interrupted.

During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career.

Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held three times a year, normally in February, June and September. Applications should be received at least two weeks before the meeting at which they are to be considered. Please check the date of the next meeting, and the closing date for applications on the Trust website at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk.

Those wishing to apply can complete an application form online, or request a form by emailing the Trust Administrator at [email protected] or by writing to the Trust c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL.

Further details of the work of the Trust can be found on the website but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Hannah Murphy (01300 348564), Richard Drewe (01300 348253), Nick Harland (01300 348272), or Olivia Steven (01305 567095).

Render Cleaning Ideal for: Roof Cleaning Houses Paint Removal Offices Patio Cleaning Churches Organic contamination Listed Buildings Brick and stone cleaning.

Using a super heated steam cleaner known as a ' DOFF ' machine it takes a normal water supply and can then rapidly heat it to 150 degrees. Once cleaned, the surface dries within minutes which prevents any long term damage as a result of trapped moisture. The surface being cleaned does not suffer any damaging pressure or thermal shock.

Or we can use a method called Soft washing..

We can use a chemical based cleaner for walls and roofs and patios. This is achieved by using a diluted mixture of water and a chemical based ingredient to a mixture of anything up to 50:1, this is then either sprayed on to the walls or patios and left for a period of time before being washed off with water. It can then be treated with a biocide which can keep organic matter at bay for a longer period. Once the initial clean has been done we recommend having a biocide treatment once a year to keep the surface maintained as this product can work for up to 12 months.

Rector’s ramblings…

“Faith of the Heart”

Dear Friends,

Recently my lovely wife purchased Netflix, for those of you who don’t know, Netflix is an internet video-on- demand company. A quick search revealed Ginny’s favourite choice of Genre, that of science fiction and more precisely Star Trek.

Every night for a month the family was subjected to the Star Trek series ‘Enterprise’ and it’s rather catchy soundtrack “Faith of the Heart” written by Dianne Warren previously, performed by Rod Stewart (1998), later released in 2001 by Russel Watson for Star Trek furthermore, this version was used on four separate occasions on board the Space Shuttle missions to awake astronauts from their slumber.

I found it fascinating, that Star Trek and the space shuttle missions with their joint narrative of scientific exploration into new worlds has a theme tune about faith. Could this be a challenge to the perceived norm of what the meaning of faith has become, I wondered?

The word faith for many years has been used as a derogatory term against religious belief, popularising the modern pernicious myth of a lack of evidence and it’s use is an absurdity in the face of scientific reasoning and progress. New age atheism successfully makes this claim. It has become the new definition that will never die. The word faith has never meant the absence of evidence. The word faith is rooted in the Latin word ‘fidere’, to ‘trust’. There is such a thing as ‘blind faith’, of course.

Thomas Aquinas describes the word of faith as ‘beyond reason’ meaning, I must go through reason where faith is on the extremity. Our universities are the modern temples of reason yet, they often adopt Aquinas’ principle of reaching out in faith, in trust. Dominus illuminato mea is the motto of the University of Oxford. Emblazed upon it’s emblem is the psalmists faith in Latin to trust in the Lord as my light - meaning, I stand in the protective refuge of the temple for it is built upon solid ground (reason).

Star Trek’s theme tune is quite possibly an attempt to regain our understanding of the word faith and this is probably due to some unlikely alliances between some of the most intelligent people who sit on either side of the religious debate.

36 www.piddlevalley.info In 2006 Pope Benedict the XVI invited the atheist scholar Jurgen Habermas in part, to discuss the conception of faith and reason; Habermas is known for speaking against his collective group of new age atheists. Habermas conducted a debate, under the title, ‘An Awareness of What Is Missing’ with the philosophers from the Jesuit School for Philosophy in Munich.

Under the instruction of the Pope, this unlikely alliance, has explored new frontiers, to seek out new possibilities, boldly producing an indispensable reading for anyone who wishes to understand one of the most urgent and intractable issues of our time, that of fundamentalism and how it seeks to close down communication.

Every Blessing, Fr. Roger

38 www.piddlevalley.info News, comings and goings in the valley ~~~~~~~~~ Alton Pancras

AP Welcome back to Nigel, Sue, Alex and George Brazier who have at last been able to return to their family home, Grey Thatches, following the devastating fire in April 2016. It must be anyone’s worst nightmare to lose everything and have to start again midterm, yet they still greet us with a smile. AP One annoyance for the Braziers was that they had to reinstate two staircases when one would have provided more space. The two hark back to the long-gone days when Grey Thatches was two dwellings, hence the plural. AP Sixty locals gathered together in the church approach on a glorious sunny evening for the second annual village BBQ with musical accompaniment by the Morris Men. Our thanks to Pete and Fran for their organisation and for the tolerance of the tenants of the two neighbouring dwellings. AP Congratulations to Max Gooding on becoming a fully-fledged fireman in the Dorset brigade – but he won’t appear in his uniform in the PV – he’s stationed at Southbourne, . AP Congratulations also to Charlie Thornton who took part in Ride 100, cycling 100 miles in a heatwave and heavy rain to raise money for charity. He writes “Many thanks to all my sponsors up and down the valley who helped me to raise nearly £1,000 for Prostate Cancer research.” AP The historic photos of Alton Pancras houses will be on display, along with tea, coffee and sampling of AP cakemaker’s skills, from 10.30 to 12.30 on Saturday 8 September. We may be joined occasionally by walkers and cyclists taking part in Dorset Historic Churches’ Ride and Stride. We may not see Sally Dangerfield senior or Tim Carron Brown for they will be striding around as many churches as they can, as long as we villagers sponsor them. AP Pethen seems an unusual name; we have a photograph of Fred L Pethen (1878-1950) in a Child Okeford village school group photo of c1888. Related to AP’s Jonathan of Brook Cottage by any chance? AP Among several church visitors recently were Darryn and Kate Still nee Shea on the very day, 30 years ago, when they married here. Nice romantic touch. Also commemorated, on 12 August, was what would have been the 100th birthday of Dorothy Ward of Rectory Cottage, nanny to the then vicarage children

Piddlehinton

Postscript to Millennium Green

With great pleasure we report that fundraising for the new play equipment has finished – we have reached the target!

As promised, below is a summary of how the money was raised.

Grant Giving Trusts £11,872.00 District Council £5,931.00 Millennium Green Trust £3,500.00 Local Donations £1,338.00 Special Fundraising Events £708.29 Piddle Valley Parish Council £700.00 Sale of Timber £100.00 TOTAL £24,149.29

The amount raised slightly exceeded the target of £23,883.20. This turned out to be very good news as some additional expenditure was incurred by using a local contractor to level the site prior to installation of the new equipment.

Warmest thanks to everyone who helped to achieve this goal – on time and just about on budget!!

A donation of £600 from Piddlehinton Fete has come as an extremely welcome piece of help in what has been a year of significant expenditure on the Millennium Green. The Fete has been giving donations to the Green for a number of years and always they have been much appreciated. This year more than ever! Thank you to the Fete Committee and all who supported this important village event. Piddlehinton Church Fete

The Old Rectory once again enjoyed glorious summer weather with a bit of cloud to save us from too much heat. Record numbers attended and we made £6,296 – over £700 more than last year! The Piddle Valley School sang for us beautifully and the Morris Dancers entertained us then invited people to have a go too. The children’s sports were as popular as ever and the younger children just loved the rides on little white ponies – for some it was their first ride ever. There were special Piddlehinton rosettes for the dog winners and two dogs qualified for the Buckham Fair Championship for rescue dogs. This is such a glorious village occasion with fete favourites – the bottle tombola, white elephant and of course delicious teas in the beautiful setting of 40 www.piddlevalley.info The Old Rectory garden where the church peeps through the trees and an abundance of flowers grace the occasion. The BBQ in the evening had many many more people than usual and our apologies to those who didn’t get their fair share of food towards the end of the evening, but we all had fun and were well entertained by a magician and Ed Hintz’s music. Huge thanks to Sara Milne for hosting the day, to our generous sponsors and to the committee for the immense amount of hard work they put in, not only on the day, but in the months beforehand and not the least, to all those many people who helped on the day and in the evening – a true village event.

RIDE& STRIDE in aid of Dorset Historic Churches

This annual event will take place on Saturday September 8th. Last year Piddlehinton raised the 10th highest amount in the list of over 200 Dorset churches, so we have to keep up the good work, BUT we need more riders and striders - preferably young ones! Alan Neades and Reg Hanbury will set the ball rolling - they BOTH need sponsoring please. Either phone Alan on 348579 or Reg on 348465 to support them or sign their forms which will be in the church. I have plenty more sponsorship forms for newcomers. You can walk or bicycle to any churches - choose your own fun route and get sponsored - the more participants, the more fun. The money goes towards repairing old Dorset churches. Gay Hanbury 348465

Piddlehinton Harvest Festival

This will be at St Mary's Church on Friday 5th October at 7 p.m. followed by Harvest Supper to which everyone is very welcome. There will be an auction of vegetables and harvest produce, which will go to decorate the church before being sold in aid of the needy in Sudan. Flowers and greenery will also be needed for decorating -please leave all contributions in the church or the church porch by 9.30 am. on Friday morning.

Vacancies on the Piddle Valley Parish Council

"The Piddle Valley Parish Council have 2 vacancies, one for Alton Pancras and one for Piddlehinton. These will be advertised soon. Please keep an eye on noticeboards and the Piddle Valley Website for how to become a member of the Piddle Valley Group Parish council and help to represent the views of the community.

If you are interested in becoming a Parish Councillor, this link is a good guide to what you can expect to become involved in, and how much time you might be expected to give. www.nalc.gov.uk/library/publications/801-good- councillors-guide/file To clarify, the Piddle Valley Parish Council meets monthly (except December) The Piddle Valley Village Emergency Telephone System. (VETS)

I am pleased to confirm that our VETS System is now Live.

Our Vets Number is 01300 452101.

We will be conducting testing of the system as soon as possible. We will need people to be available on their home telephone numbers to allow this testing to take place. We will contact you all personally to try and arrange a date for the testing.

In the meantime, if your phone rings, please listen carefully, and follow the instructions given. The role of the VETS volunteer is to take a defibrillator to the location where it is required. It will be up to you which defibrillator you take – it could be the one nearest to you, or the one nearest the casualty.

For those who have kindly volunteered to be on this scheme, please keep the evening of the 13th September 2018 free. We have requested further training for VETS volunteers, we are just awaiting confirmation. Volunteer handbooks will be available to Volunteers. We will contact you directly as soon as we can.

There are 6 defibrillators spread through the Piddle Valley – the VETS system can accommodate 3 different lists of 10 telephone numbers. Therefore we have “grouped” the defibs – see below

Piddlehinton – including Enterprise Park and White Lackington

Alton Pancras, Piddletrenthide & Plush. www.piddlevalley.info 43

Some Volunteers are on more than one list – we would still welcome anybody who is willing to join this scheme, so that each list is filled to the maximum of 10 volunteers, and nobody needs to cover more than one area.

We cannot thank you enough for volunteering to be part of this potentially life saving scheme.

The Defib Working Group, Piddle Valley Parish Council Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance

2019 Diaries supporting your Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance are now available from us, still £4 per diary. We also have Christmas cards at £4 per pack.

Thank you for your continued support. Susan & Terry Dredge 01300 348120. Piddle Valley Community Speed Watch

The Piddle Valley Community Speed Watch (CSW) was set up in March 2014 so has now been operating for over four years. In that period over 500 motorists have been recorded exceeding the threshold speed limit on our local roads, and their vehicle details forwarded to for further action.

Initially the CSW covered Piddletrenthide, Piddlehinton and Alton Pancras, however this was later expanded, with and Duntish joining Alton Pancras and operating independently.

It should be emphasised that the primary objective of the CSW is to educate drivers to drive safely, within the 30mph speed limit in our villages, and is not to "catch" people speeding.

For this to work successfully and get the message across to all drivers we do need more volunteers - each roadside team consists of at least 3 people to record all the details so the more volunteers we have the less demands there are on each of us. 27 people were killed and 329 seriously injured on Dorset’s roads during 2017.

So, if you are interested in joining the CSW team – please contact one of our volunteers, or Dorchester East Safer Neighbourhood Team, telephone 101

For more information visit the Dorset Police Community Speed Watch website:- http://dorsetroadsafe.org.uk/ 44 www.piddlevalley.info Fund raising for Moorfields Eye Hospital - Update

Our challenge to 'Climb the Dome for Moorfields' is fast approaching! After a few set backs we are on course to complete the challenge. Our grandson George has been under the care of Moorfields Eye Hospital and it would be wonderful to be able to raise funds for the hospital. You may be aware that Piddletrenthide is a one of several Hedgehog friendly villages in Dorset. Those of us committed to helping these endangered mammals try to do our bit to make our gardens more hedgehog friendly. Hedgehogs thrive best on their natural diet of invertebrates: beetles, caterpillars, grubs and worms form 66% of their wild diet, plus slugs and snails. We can help them by providing a wild corner in our gardens, with long grass, woodpile and compost heap, where they can forage for their natural prey, keeping pests down in the garden as well.

Hedgehogs often have a second litter in the late summer or early autumn. The young learn how to forage with their mother at about a month old, and are then left to fend for themselves a couple of weeks later, when they weigh about 200gms. In order to stand a chance of hibernating successfully these autumn juveniles need to put on weight in a hurry to 600 or 650gms before the cold weather comes. Supplementary feeding (a little cat food and no milk) really helps hogs from September onwards when late-born hoglets need to fatten quickly before the winter. During October or November, small hoglets less than 600gms seen out in the day or foraging at night need to be rescued so that they can be fattened up for later release, or to be looked after overwinter. So if you find an autumn juvenile, weigh it, put it in a deep cardboard box with a shallow bowl of water, and a piece of cloth or some straw to hide under, and call me. I can then either take it to the hedgehog hospital if it is injured or poorly, advise you how to look after it, or find someone to look after it until it is ready for release. Plush Festival 2018

Pianist Tim Horton curates Plush Festival 2018 14-16 September. Season highlights: Heath Quartet, Fieri Consort, Filippo Gorini, Sir András Schiff, Adrian Brendel, Bjørg Lewis & more

Following co-curatorial seasons with Harrison Birtwistle and Oliver Knussen, founder Adrian Brendel has invited outstanding pianist Tim Horton to direct the festival's 22nd season. The programme continues the Plush ethos of mixing world-class musicians with exciting new talents, juxtaposing contemporary with classical music and new sounds in invigorating ways. Concerts take place in the beautiful former church of St Johns, an intimate space with stunning acoustics and a warm atmosphere.

Tim and Fieri mix Renaissance motets with Stockhausen, and another unique configuration of musicians comes together for this year’s Plush Ensemble.

This year’s festival end’s with the annual Young Musicians Workshop on Sunday 16 September. Under 21s get access to £5 tickets for all concerts (limited availability) and under 16s go free to our contemporary folk concert.

For interview requests or general press enquiries, please reply to this email, contact [email protected] or call Nick Johnstone on 07905 470228. New Advertising Treasurer Required

The time it might take.

1-2 hours per week, but with additional work from time to time. The time it takes does vary. Most months it's about an hour a week, but when sending out annual invoices it can take a day to get them all written, checked and sent out. The months where there are a lot of invoices to send out take more time, so mostly it's the ad-hoc adverts at other points in the year.

The Skills Required

An aptitude for figures, basic computer skills, email, on-line banking, and an organised mind. Putting the annual financial information together has to be done in a specific way, but it's overlooked by a financial specialist anyway.

Initial training and support from the existing treasurer will be available.

Piddletrenthide Lunch Club

Lunch Club meets once a month in The Memorial Hall, Piddletrenthide. The cost for a two-course meal followed by Coffee or Tea is £6. Everyone is welcome to attend, simply ring Ann Hawker on 01300 348329 approximately one week before the next meeting.

The next two dates are

28 September – menu yet to be finalised – look out for details in Piddletrenthide Shop approximately a week beforehand.

26 October – Chicken pie, seasonal vegetables and dessert. Piddle Valley Gardens Club

Members of the Gardens Club had a thoroughly enjoyable visit to the Forest Lodge Stud Garden at Penselwood, near Wincanton on yet another of this year’s particularly hot summer days, Monday 25th June.

The extensive garden was created in 1996 from a sloping field by owner Lucy Nelson, the layout being inspired by gardens such as Hestercombe in Somerset, and is looked after by her hardworking gardener Amanda Fowler. The visit ended with delicious carrot cake and tea.

In stark contrast, the Summer Social, which was due to be held at the home of Ian and Sally Condon at Riverbank, Church Lane on Sunday 29 July, had to be relocated to Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall due to the inclement weather that particular day, possibly the only wet day in weeks !

However, over 40 members enjoyed some delicious food and socialising in the hall. Forthcoming events:-

Mon 24 Sep - talk by Neil Lovesey of Picket Lane Nursery on ‘Seeds - Gardeners Gift, Nurseryman’s Nightmare’

Sat 13 Oct - Harvest Supper in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall with guest speaker Bin Roy, who will give a talk on aspects of the Great War.

Mon 29 Oct - talk by David Burgess on ‘Chinese vs Japanese Gardens’

Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall

Piddle Valley Country Dancing Group, Mondays, 2.30 – 4.30 p.m.

We’ll start dancing again on Monday 17 September and hope to run until Monday 10 December...but we really, really, need more people to join our group if we are to carry on. It only needs one or two people to feel unwell, and one or two more to have another appointment or be away on holiday on the same Monday for our numbers to be seriously reduced. If we could find about 6 more dancers, we could cope with occasional absentees quite easily and you would be very, very welcome and you don’t need to bring a partner. We are mostly – but not entirely! – of an age where we tend to march to the music rather than ‘prance’ but we have the most enormous fun and would hate to see the group have to close.

We’d love it if more men would join our three ‘regulars’. There’s nothing to be afraid of, we all make mistakes and spend most of the afternoon laughing, though we do sometimes get the dances right all the way through, a cause for celebration. We walk each dance through, often more than once, before putting on the music and, as well as repeating old favourites, we usually try one or two new dances each week so we’re all learners together.

Do give it a try this term and help to save us from extinction! Where else can you have an afternoon of guaranteed enjoyment and healthy exercise, with free tea/coffee and biscuits in the interval for a mere £1.50p per week? The only advice you need is to come in well-fitting shoes and bring your tolerance and sense of humour with you.

Jane Preston, 01305 260 893 (new phone number). Piddle Valley over 60’s Club

Our last outing this year will be to Sculptures by the Lakes at . We will be travelling there by car. If anyone needs transport, please contact a member of the committee. You can go at whatever time you like after 10 am but we will be meeting in the restaurant at 3.15 pm for our cream tea.

On Saturday 6th October we will be having our Michaelmas Coffee Morning in Piddlehinton Village Hall from 10.30 am to noon. There will be a raffle and stalls selling cakes, bric-a-brac and books. We would welcome any donations for these stalls.

Piddle Valley Losses in The Great War

4th October 1918

GUNNER FREDERICK REGINALD SAWYER (ALTON PANCRAS)

ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY

Frederick Reginald Sawyer was born on 1889, probably in Upwey. He was one of eight children whose parents were John and Ruth. The Sawyers lived in the present-day Cherry Cottage in Alton Pancras, and Frederick was living in the village when he enlisted in the army.

Details of his service are sparse. He was a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery, serving with B. Battery, 251st Brigade. At some point in the war, though it is not known when or where, Gunner Sawyer was captured by the Germans. Prisoners of war were often not treated well. Sickness, sometimes of a fatal nature, was prevalent in some camps.

Frederick died in captivity at the age of 29 on 4th October 1918. He is buried in Germany in the Worms (Hockheim Hill) Cemetery.

Frederick had an older brother, Charles, who served as a Private in the Border Regiment. He died of sickness on 27th October 1916 in France and is buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery near the town of Albert (PVNV September/October 2016).

It is impossible to imagine the feelings of their parents, losing two sons in the prime of life. That both boys died in the month of October must have been an unbearable tragedy. 17th October 1918

SHOEING SMITH ARTHUR LEONARD CROAD (ALTON PANCRAS)

MACHINE GUN CORPS (CAVALRY)

Arthur Leonard Croad was the last of four Alton Pancras men to be killed in action. He lost his life at the age of 24 on 17th October 1918, less than a month before the Armistice.

Baptised on 23rd December 1894, Arthur was the youngest of 5 children born to Charles and Priscilla Croad who came from old village families. He was married to Emily Ann who, after his death, lived in Plumstead, London.

50 www.piddlevalley.info He was killed serving with 5th Squadron, Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry). He must have volunteered early, for he went to the Western Front in May 1915.

The Machine Gun Corps operated Vickers machine guns to support units in attack and defence. The squadrons on the M.G.C. Cavalry Branch were attached to cavalry regiments which largely fought as infantry on the Western Front because conditions were wholly unsuitable for horsed action.

Arthur Croads rank was Shoeing Smith. This was equivalent to a Private, and indicates his trade in the army. It may also have been his civilian trade.

His Squadron was involved in the Battle of the Selle, 17th – 25th October 1918. How he was killed is not known, but he is buried in the Cemetery Extension at Busigny, a few miles south of Le Cateau.

Arthur’s older brother, Alfred George, was a 22 year old Private in 5th Dorsets who was killed on the Suvla Plain, Gallipoli, in August 1915. (PVNV July/August 2015). As with the Sawyer family, we cannot comprehend the anguish which would have racked Charles and Priscilla at the loss of two sons. 23rd October 1918

STAFF SERGEANT THOMAS JAMES HICKS (PIDDLETRENTHIDE)

1ST BATTALION, BEDFORDSHIRE REGIMENT

Thomas James Hicks was the son of a publican, James Hicks and his wife, Emily Jane, and was born at Beaminster in 1886. The family moved to Piddletrenthide at an unknown date and lived at Crown Cottage. There was an older sister, Emily, born in 1885.

Hicks was a Staff Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment and, on 22nd October 1918, they moved up at dusk for an attack in Beaurain Ridge. They were heavily shelled in their assembly points, suffering about 100 casualties. Despite this, they went on behind a creeping barrage and captured the Ridge.

Thomas Hicks may have been killed in the shelling or during the attack. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial to the Missing. His wife, Jane, lived in Gillingham after his death.

Thomas Hicks was the last man from Piddletrenthide to lose his life in the War.

News from Puddletown Surgery

Dear All,

Flu season is nearly upon us already. If you are eligible for a Flu vaccination then please phone the surgery after 1st September to book at appointment.

Following NHS guidelines, flu vaccinations are offered only to those who are over 65 years of age, are pregnant or who suffer from a chronic disease, and their Carers.

This year there will be two different type of Flu vaccine. If you are 65 years of age or over on 31st March 2019 then you will receive a different type of flu vaccine to those under 65 years of age. This is because different age groups have been found to respond differently to different types of vaccine, and so this should be much more beneficial for everyone.

We would like to encourage all those who are eligible to take up the opportunity to have the flu vaccine.

Practice Manager

We are delighted to announce that Clare Winterburn will be joining us as our new practice manager in the middle of September. Clare already has a lot of experience within the NHS, working for Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust and also having a role in NHS transformation work in Weymouth. We very much look forward to welcoming her to Puddletown.

Surgery and Dispensary Opening Times We are open Monday to Friday 8.30 – 6.30 and Saturday 8.30 – 11.00

62 www.piddlevalley.info During those opening hours, we hope to provide patients with an excellent range of appointments to suit all of their needs. These include: 8.30 – 9.00 Telephone consultations with the doctors. 9.00 – 10.30 Open Surgery where access to the doctors will be in order of arrival. 9.00 – 10.00 on a Saturday 3.30 – 4.00 Telephone consultations with the doctors. 4.00 – 6.10 Pre-bookable appointments with the doctors.

If you need to speak to a doctor, please try and phone during the phone in times, or any time if it is urgent.

Saturday mornings – We offer the same as weekday mornings for both the telephone consultations and an Open Surgery session, but please note that you need to book in between 8.30 - 10.00 am to make sure you will be seen.

Online Consultations – These are available via our website, once you have registered for Online Access at the surgery. This sends a message very much like an email direct to the doctors on our medical system, who will be able to answer any general health concerns that you may have. This should not be used for anything urgent. Repeat Prescriptions - Please remember that our Dispensary require a full 48 hours (2 working days – Monday to Friday) to make sure we can have items ready for your collection.

If you are unwell while the surgery is closed, ring NHS 111. They will take details of your condition and direct you straight away to the local service that can help you best.

Please note that repeat prescriptions should be requested earlier than usual around any Bank Holidays if you are due to run out over that period. Please remember that our Dispensary require a 2 full Working Days to make sure we can have items ready for your collection.

Cerne Abbas Surgery: Hazelbury Bryan Outreach Clinic

As some of you will be aware, we have for many years run an outreach GP clinic at the village hall in Hazelbury Bryan. This has operated as a ‘sit and wait’ session, sometimes well attended but often with only a handful of patients. We are now in a position where the demands on general practice have increased, developments within healthcare have continued apace, and we have struggled to offer the same level of service at Hazelbury Bryan as we do in the main surgery; for example:

• IT issues exist meaning the GP cannot reliably access your medical record, making consultations difficult and meaning duplicating work when they return to the surgery. • The open room used in the village hall means physical examination is very restricted and equipment is limited to what the GP can bring on the day. In addition, confidentiality could be compromised as other patients could over-hear consultations whilst they are taking place. • Infection control is very important in all healthcare settings and the village hall is not set up as a surgery and so does not reach the standards we are required to adopt by the Care Quality Commission when looking after patents. • Finally, we need to get best value from our resources and I’m sure you would all recognise that more patients could be seen by the GP in the time they are currently spending driving to and from Cerne Abbas.

64 www.piddlevalley.info Given the information outlined above, we are now asking for responses to our intention to close the Hazelbury Bryan outreach clinic in November 2018, with the last session, including the flu clinic being held on 31st October 2018.

Note that delivery of medication, appropriate home visits and flu clinics will continue, and that patient transport is available through local groups to get you to Cerne Abbas surgery should you require this.

If you would like to comment or raise any issues regarding this proposal, please email [email protected] or write to: The Practice Manager Cerne Abbas Surgery 51 Long Street

A date for your diary

Please make a note of the date for our annual flu clinic at Cerne Abbas Village Hall. This will be held between 9.30am – 1pm of Tuesday 16th October. If you are eligible for a flu vaccination, please make every effort to attend this clinic as this is the most efficient way for us to ensure we have time to vaccinate everyone. Thank you.
