The Bridge Educational Trust

The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century.

The objectives of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at a school, college, or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered.

At the Trustees’ discretion, expeditions or travel groups for young people which are organised for scientific or cultural purposes may be eligible, provided they contain an educational element.

The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose after normal education has been interrupted.

During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career.

Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held in March, July and November. Those wishing to apply should obtain an application form by writing to The Administrator c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL or by emailing [email protected]. Applications by post or email should be received not later than the 15th of the month before the meeting at which they are to be considered.

Further details of the Trust can be found at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Rev Tony Monds (348211), Rex Goddard (348363), Sue Nicholas (348436), Hannah Murphy (348564), Richard Drewe (348253), Nick Harland (348272)

It is with mixed emotions that we report the departure of Tony Monds to pastures new – however, his new role as chaplain to the Bishop of Salisbury sounds fascinating and we wish him and Jenny all the best settling into their new life in Wiltshire. His final service will be at Lyscombe Chapel at 11am on Sunday 12 July followed by a farewell bring your own picnic.

Thank you so much to Susan Chance for all her hard work as Treasurer over the last few years, she is now stepping down. Welcome (again) to Minnow Walker who has taken on this role in conjunction with the advertising co-ordination.

This issue is full of photos – which really brings the updates on various events to life – I have used as many as I could. There is a note about the Neighbourhood Plan and a very apt poem for our villages sent in by Claire Hudson on page 35, and another walk to try out while the weather is favourable. We have added an Index of Advertisers on page 86, and a section for Free ads (currently on page 7). As ever, any suggestions about what you would like to see in PVNV are most welcome.

I do hope that you enjoy the rest of the summer, and any holiday travels beyond the valley...

ADIEU

‘For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven ... A time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted ...’ So writes ‘the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem’ in Ecclesiastes. Jenny and I were ‘planted’ here over eight and a half years ago and now it is time for us to be plucked up. When things are plucked up, the roots do not always come away cleanly as they cling to the place where they have been planted and nurtured. We will be sad to leave this Benefice where you have all been so friendly and kind and generous to us and where we have been privileged to live in a very beautiful part of the county in which I have been fortunate enough to have lived for virtually all my life. Now we leave for Wiltshire and Salisbury where I am to begin a new job as chaplain to the Bishop of Salisbury. It will be very different from life as a rural parish priest. My basic role is to support the bishop in his work and so I will be based in his office in South Canonry, his official residence in the cathedral Close. Much of the job will be to ensure that the bishop’s office runs smoothly, especially when he is not there - which is quite often since he sits in the House of Lords, is the Church of ’s spokesperson on the environment (currently a time consuming role with the big Paris summit coming up in December) and has to attend various Synods, meetings of the House of Bishops etc in addition to his work in the diocese. Each day the office receives a large amount of correspondence and phone calls, both routine and extraordinary, which have to be dealt with efficiently. I will also attend various diocesan meetings both with the bishop and on his behalf and be required to administer some of them. What I will not be doing is undertaking duties in the cathedral except on formal occasions when I may be required to accompany the bishop but to remain very much in the background. Indeed, I will not be leading worship (other than times of prayer with the bishop or occasionally helping out in my own time parishes which may find themselves in need of cover) nor will I be preaching (other than sometimes doing research for the bishop’s sermons). Instead of being parish priest to over 2000 people in this Benefice, I will be chaplain to the bishop and his team - no more than half a dozen of us. And that is what I shall miss most: my contact with you when you have allowed me to share in your times of happiness and sadness, and my engagement with the lives of our two schools at Cheselbourne and in the Piddle Valley. But when something is plucked up, it leaves fallow ground in which something else may be planted - an opportunity for new and better things to grow - and so you have the excitement of looking forward to whoever it is that God will send as your new parish priest. I know that whoever it may be will be as delighted as were Jenny and I with the welcome that we received and that God will bless this Benefice as he has in the past and will continue to do because he is faithful. So I head this article ‘Adieu’, not because I wish this to be a final parting where we may not see each other again before we meet in heaven but because it is a ‘goodbye’, a ‘God be with you’, and a blessing committing you all ‘to God’.

32 www.piddlevalley.info Support And Information For Older People

If you are over 50 there is a free resource you can call on to help you find out what you need to know about services and activities that are important to you in your community. It is called POPP (Partnership for Older People Programme). POPP is funded by DCC and NHS Dorset to improve the quality of life for older people by ensuring that opportunities are put in place locally to promote health and wellbeing, independence , preventative services and activities . Locally there are two people you can contact: Ellis Ford – who is what is termed a POPP Wayfinder and Julian English – a POPP Champion.

Ellis will provide one-to-one support and signposting and can visit people in their own homes. He has a wealth of information and relevant contacts at his fingertips and if he doesn’t know the answer to any question immediately he will find out.

Julian challenges the way that the statutory bodies deliver services to older people, so if you have any concerns you should raise them with him .Julian will also support groups to fund new activities and initiatives that help older people remain active, healthy and involved with their local community. In Cerne POPP has seed funded the Giant Social and the Community Defibrillator .

56 www.piddlevalley.info 34 www.piddlevalley.info Thank you to everyone who came to the presentation of the first draft of the Neighbourhood Plan in the school at the end of April, we had a very large turnout.

Thanks also for returning your feedback forms and suggestions, the majority of which were very supportive. We are still going through these and will let you know our thoughts when we have finished. Where many people have made similar comments we will publish a reply in this magazine, those with more specific concerns will be addressed on an individual basis. A revised version of the Plan will be published taking into consideration those amendments which are supported by the majority of opinions.

We were sorry to say goodbye to Dot & John Browning who have now moved away from the valley. They have both worked tirelessly and been very keen, active and supportive members of the Neighbourhood Plan giving up considerable amounts of their time and energy from the start. They will be sorely missed and I would like to thank them for all their extremely hard work. Paul Johns Working Group Chairman Tel (01300) 348154, email [email protected] / [email protected]

The old church stands down old church lane, where it has stood for years. It¹s seen the people come and go, their laughter and their tears. Its hard to think that fine old church once colourful and new, but long before the church was built, the wild flowers grew.

The village folk all gather down upon the village green, to have a fete and celebrate, and crown the village queen. To have a joke and have a laugh of how things used to be. Village without the village folk, it wouldn¹t be the same. But long before the village folk, the wild flowers came.

Lorries, heavy lorries all thunder through the lanes, revving up their engines and leaving diesel stains; tainting wayside verges with tar and oil and grease, rumbling, shifting noises of now forgotten peace. But with the help of sunshine, and early morning rain, the never failing cycle, wild flowers bloom again.

Alton Pancras

AP Two relatively-recent arrivals in the village have volunteered to represent us on the PV parish council, for which we are grateful. Bernard Clifton and wife Marie moved into the Old Post Office in 2013. They had lived in South Africa and Botswana where Bernard worked in the construction industry but have had no difficulty fitting neatly into AP life! Marie Pethen, husband Jonathan and son Joseph arrived at Brook Cottage in 2009 after a year in the USA. Born in Devon, Marie works for a firm of solicitors.

AP Last year’s AP Fete was held in monsoon conditions so we were due the glorious sunny day this year. The setting was the attractive gardens of Barcombe Grange, by kind permission of Ian and Janet Barlow, described by show opener Hermione Norris as being like an English film set. Hermione is probably best known for her role as Ros Myers in Spooks, which won her the Best Actress award, and in Cold Feet.

AP There were 271 adults paying entrance fees compared with 157 last year. School children went in free and were not recorded. Still on Brain Tumour Research, their yellow collection boxes dotted around the site, together with their merchandise sales, netted the amazing sum of £89.

AP The proceeds will be divided between the parish church and Brain Tumour Research. Jane Ridgway, co-organiser with Dr Sally Dangerfield, had been diagnosed in 2012 and quickly discovered that there was precious little research being undertaken in this field. Necessary work on the church belltower is also required and the ladder access to it needs strengthening in the first instance.

AP Talking of the church tower, a coffee morning will be held in said church (at ground level!) from 10am–12pm Saturday 29 August. Books/cakes/teas/coffees will be on sale and the picture books of old AP will be there to act as reminiscent therapy!

AP And finally…..the street lamp opposite Boldacre (in a field) has worked well for at least a year – with one snag. It is lit during the day, not at night. Requests to the authority have not remedied it and it is suggested that we send photographic evidence. Fine during the day but a photograph, in the pitch dark, of a light not working? [email protected]

36 www.piddlevalley.info A Spookily Cracking Fete at Alton Pancras (photos on inside front cover)

Alton Pancras was bathed in glorious sunshine for this year’s annual fete held on 23rd May. We managed to raise substantial funds for both St Pancras Church and Brain Tumour Research, this year’s chosen charity. Set in the gardens of Ian and Janet Barlow’s divine gardens, it was likened to a “film set” by Hermione Norris (Spooks, Cold Feet, Crimson Fields and In the Club) who graciously agreed to open the fete at 1pm. Hermione cannot possibly agree to all the requests she receives for such events but fortunately on this occasion she succumbed to the charm of Max Dangerfield, to whom she simply couldn’t say no!

The most popular attraction this year was Bubble Football, ably run by Jane’s husband David. Three hours of strapping sweaty children into inflated zorbs and policing non-stop games of footie in the burning sun was challenging. Thank goodness for Bob Lally’s very gorgeous daughters who made it all worthwhile when they joined in at the very end!

All the children’s stalls did very well under the exceptionally capable guidance of Bernard and Marlene Clifton who roped in several family and friends for yet another year. The newly crafted wheel of fortune was a roaring success. Bob Lally’s Barbecue and Beer tent went down a treat, as did the Afternoon Teas and Cakes and Jams stall. It is impossible to mention here all those who helped and ran stalls. We have an amazing team that has supported us for the two years in which we have been running the fete and put up with our dictatorship!

The team is made up of several villagers, who have run and been involved in the fete for many many years, long before we were even on the scene and we could not do it without you. We are also grateful to one particular newcomer to the village, Declan Phelan, not only for his generosity in supporting the fete’s stalls, but also for providing so many extra pairs of hands to help on the day.

The unsung heroes of the event were definitely Roland Dangerfield, Pete Metcalfe and Anthony Trevis who did such a monumental amount of heavy lifting, moving skittles, chairs and tables up and down the valley. Many don’t realise quite how much you do and that the fete simply wouldn’t happen without you. We know how exhausted you all were as a result of the physically demanding work and are already on the look out for some young strapping lads to help us all next year. Beware Josh Haywood, as the winner of the 2015 Alton Pancras Welly Wanging Competition, yours is the first door we will be knocking on!

Thank you to everyone, both helpers and attenders, for such a fun and happy day.

Piddlehinton Millennium Green - Costa del Piddle We had a great evening on 6 June, enjoying delicious paella, freshly prepared on the spot by Quiddles of Portland, in Sue Hennessy’s lovely garden. This time the English weather, whilst not quite Costa-like, was kind to us, unlike the downpour we had to survive in 2011! Thank you Sue for your generosity in letting us use your garden once again.

Thank you also to everyone who came along and supported the Green – we raised just over £600. All the proceeds go towards keeping the Green looking neat and tidy, maintaining & improving the facilities, and ensuring it is safe for all to use – the annual running costs are around £1200, all met through our local fundraising. Don’t forget to try the new see-saw and trim trail items! (See photos inside front cover.)

Our next event is Rounders on the Green on Sunday 13 September – bring a team, or just come along and join in an existing team, all welcome.

We live in a lovely area of the country and it’s nice to sit in the garden on a summer day and listen to the birds. With this in mind a few years ago a number of people in Piddletrenthide agreed to try to avoid using lawn mowers, strimmers and similarly noisy power tools on a Sunday, or at least the afternoon. I should like to thank everyone who supported the idea, having written in News and Views we were pleased that so many others joined us, making the valley very peaceful. Obviously there will be times when such activities will be necessarily but if we all continue to make an effort it can work and we all benefit. Sally Condon

Although Janet will continue to help with coffee mornings and the Lunch Club, she will be much missed as a Trustee.

The Trustees would like to sincerely thank Janet for all the hard work and commitment that she has contributed.

The Hall, though small, still performs a valuable role in village life. More Trustees are needed to keep it going, so if you can spare a few evenings a year please contact Ros Charlton, Secretary. Blood Donation

‘You may have heard recently that NHS Blood & Transplant are redoubling efforts to recruit new blood donors, because there has been a 40% drop in new recruits in the past year compared to 2004-2005. This downward trend in new recruits joining the donor register is causing great concern because if it continues there will be a blood supply crises. At the moment only about 3–4% of the current eligible population are regular donors. ‘

Community Speed Watch

Dorset Police have recently formed a new “no excuse” team to tackle bad and inconsiderate driving in the county.

The team aims to use a combination of enforcement and education to tackle the following ‘fatal five’: • Excessive and inappropriate speed • Drink and drug driving • Not wearing a seatbelt • Driver distractions such as hand held mobile phone • Careless driving

The team operate on a 24/7 basis so they could be anywhere, at any time, including the B3143, the valley road.

The Piddle Valley Community Speed Watch volunteers are also active – on Saturday 6 June 2015, five separate speed watch activities on the B3143 were carried out, a total of 26 drivers were recorded exceeding the threshold speed limit and have been reported to for further action.

To date in excess of 360 drivers have been reported for speeding on our local Piddle Valley roads.

44 www.piddlevalley.info Would you be willing to give up a couple of hours each month to assist us – if so please contact one of our volunteers.

Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance – Piddle Valley You Did It Again! Thank You.

We would like, through News & Views, to thank everyone who responded to the Annual Bananas & Cake Appeal to support the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Coast 2 Coast Cycle Ride which took place last Sunday, 17 May. Your donations of bananas, cakes, biscuits and bars was wonderful to say the least and, once again, the over 500+ cyclists who stopped for “refuelling” at Ilminster Ambulance Station were so grateful for all of your donations and pleased to report there was enough for everybody. Many of them asked where all of this wonderful spread had come from and they also asked us to pass on personal thanks to those who had given. Also pleased to report that it was near perfect cycling weather, no wind or rain, low cloud and some sunshine but lower temperatures.

Your community needs you!

Most of us lead such busy lives that sometimes we long to spend more time at home catching up on all the things we don’t have time to do.

However, for a lot of older people, being at home all the time can mean a very long day without seeing or speaking to anyone. This can lead to feelings of isolation, depression and loneliness. Many older people would like to access social groups but have the lost the confidence to go along to something on their own and need a helping hand to get them out and about again. Others are not able to get out very much but would welcome a regular visit from someone for coffee and a chat.

This is where you come in! If you are a good communicator, enjoy listening and getting to know people and have some time to spare then this is your opportunity to make a real difference to someone’s life all in the space of about an hour a week!

Currently, there is a lady in Piddletrenthide who would like someone to visit her for some company and perhaps go for a short walk with her.

If you live in or around Piddletrenthide and would like more information about volunteering for the Reach Out service, please contact Lisa Holmes at Age UK Dorchester on 01305 269444.

www.piddlevalley.info 45 We will not know the final amount raised for several months yet but you can get updates and follow progress and see pictures of happy cyclists and hear some stories by going onto the D&SAA website, http://www.dsairambulance.org.uk/2015/05/19/ sunshine-smiles-and-cuddles-for-air-ambulance-cyclists/

Once again, many, many thanks from us and the cyclists for all your donations and support.

Dorset Trading Standards

So, it’s time to book that annual holiday. Do you choose a ‘package’ holiday or organise your own as an ‘independent’ traveller? A package holiday is one that’s been prearranged for you by a tour operator. The price will include flights and accommodation. As an independent traveller you’ll have to book your own flights, accommodation, excursions and trips separately.

If you choose a package holiday you’re protected by special regulations and if things do go wrong it should be much easier to sort things out.

As an independent traveller you’re more flexible and can shop around for the cheapest flights and accommodation deals. However, you’ll have much less protection if something goes wrong, unless you book a ‘Flight-Plus holiday’ – where your flight is booked with your hotel or car hire through the same company. Booking in this way you get extra protection if your holiday company goes out of business, or if one of the companies involved in your booking goes out of business.

Check if your booking is protected by a holiday protection scheme. The main schemes are the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and Air Travel Organisers’ licensing (ATOL) – there are others like The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO). Check that your booking is covered as sometimes travel agents who are ABTA members may make bookings with non-ABTA tour operators. You can ask the trader for their ATOL or ABTA number and check on the relevant schemes’ website.

When you’re booking your holiday let the travel agent or trader know of any special requirements you have and if possible get them added in writing to your booking form. Tell them what’s important to you and why you’ve chosen the holiday. For example if a sea view is important stress this and get it in writing. If things go wrong and you don’t get your sea view your case for compensation will be much stronger if you’ve made it clear how important it was to you.

46 www.piddlevalley.info If you can, pay the deposit for your holiday by credit card, particularly if you’re an independent traveller because then your card company may be jointly responsible if your holiday contract is breached. This means you can make a claim against the card company if things go wrong, for example if your airline collapses and you’re not protected by the ATOL scheme or package holiday regulations.

Travel insurance can give you extra protection if your holiday doesn’t go as planned and you would be wise to make sure you have cover if you’re planning a holiday. Without insurance medical emergencies abroad can end up costing you thousands of pounds. You need to make sure your policy gives you the right level of medical insurance for your trip. It’s particularly important to have travel insurance if you’re travelling independently because you may find yourself stranded with no way to get home and no-one to help sort out your holiday problem.

If need advice about a holiday problem call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or visit citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer

Together we’ll beat scams!

June 20 is National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Week.

Dorset Trading Standards work with Citizens Advice to help people stay safe from scams. The website www.citizensadvice.org.uk has really good information to help protect yourself from scams including internet crime.

Topics include protecting your computer and wi-fi network, spotting phishing emails and websites where scammers try to obtain your personal and financial card details, top tips to protect your identity and cash from online scammers. The website also has a fun ‘scam spotting quiz’ to help you become more confident in spotting this type of fraud. Why not take a look now?

Scams do come in many different shapes and sizes though and we wanted to take this opportunity to remind you about Dorset Police’s campaign to ‘Hang up on Fraudsters’ because telephone fraudsters are targeting Dorset residents.

The fraudsters pretend they are from the police, a bank, retailer or fraud department. They tell their victim that their account has been compromised and to dial 999 or their bank to confirm the call is genuine. BUT the fraudster keeps the phone line open so when the victim redials they are still talking to a fraudster who tricks them into handing over their bank details, Personal identification Number (PIN) or cash for safe keeping.

• NEVER give out your pin number or bank details to ANYONE who calls you, no www.piddlevalley.info 47 matter who they claim to be, or where they claim to be from • Never send cash in a taxi or via courier • Never send bank cards anywhere – always keep them with you

The police and your bank will NEVER ask you for your personal bank information over the phone.

If you receive a call from someone who wants your bank details: • Hang up • Wait for at least five minutes • Dial 1471 and write down the telephone number • Call the police immediately on 101.

Butts Cottage, Plush The unseasonal warm weather in April got us off to a wonderful start attracting 150 visitors over our first weekend with some people arriving on the dot of 2 pm, sitting chatting in the sunshine over their tea and cakes and staying until closing time at 5 pm. The biggest attraction, besides the daffodils, seemed to be our displays of erythronium pagoda (dog’s-tooth violet) which were at their very best.

www.piddlevalley.info 49 May was tulip, early spring shrubs and blossom time and, although the weather was cold, our azaleas and rhododendrons (in special acid beds or pots) made a dazzling display, especially ‘Percy Wiseman’, the dark pink of the opening buds contrasting well with the paler pink of the open flowers. Our last open weekend in June brought perfect summer weather, ox-eye daisies and southern marsh orchids contrasting nicely in our ‘wild’ areas, dusky-pink clematis Boughton Star smothering one wall and romping merrily up an old apple-tree, vegetables growing well and bedding-plants managing to survive the cold nights of the previous few weeks and put on a good show - only the rambling roses round the knot-garden remained stubbornly in bud form.

All in all, with good weather (though chilly at times) for all three weekends, we’ve had a very successful year with approximately £2,000 raised towards the many charities that the National Gardens Scheme supports. We couldn’t have done it without our helpful team of cake-makers, tea-servers and ticket-sellers, as well as Bridget on the plant-stall and Richard directing cars in the paddock – so many, many thanks to them all!

Jane and John Preston

Ivy House Many thanks to all friends, family and garden lovers who attended this year’s ‘openings’ in our garden. Despite days which saw on occasion 50 mph winds, horizontal rain and overcast skies, your support helped to raise nearly £1200 which has been forwarded to the NGS to support such worthwhile charities as McMillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Hospice UK, Parkinson’s UK and several others.

We would also like to give particular thanks to Meli Fowler, Liz and Ian Messer, Mary Faulds and Liz Larpent for helping so ably in our ventures. And not forgetting the two stalwarts of the days, Jane and John Preston who turn up whatever the weather and take the entrance money and man the all important Plant Stall.

We look forward to seeing you all when we open our gates in Spring 2016!

All are welcome, no experience is necessary. There will be squash available, sorry no food. £5 each, no charge for accompanied under 16s.

The Piddle Valley Players – needs talented young men!

The Piddle Valley Players is a community musical theatre group, drawing members largely from Piddletrenthide, Piddlehinton, Cerne Abbas, Alton Pancras and Buckland Newton.

We are a small group, but have’ high ambitions’ of staging professional musical shows, something that most companies don’t dare to attempt!

Piddle Valley Country Dancing Group

There are short cuts to happiness and dancing is one of them. This is a quotation from Vicki Baum, the Austrian writer and boxer (!) and sums up my feelings towards dancing completely. You cannot feel depressed or miserable while you are dancing and, in our group, we constantly laugh at our mistakes and cheer at our successes. Country dancing is all about team-work and concentration as well as an excellent way to take exercise and keep fit in an enjoyable, sociable way.

We badly need a few more members to keep our group going. We meet on Monday afternoons in the Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall from 2.15pm–4.15pm. from September through to late March or early April, depending on the date of Easter. The cost is a mere £1.50p per week, with free tea/coffee/biscuits during the much-needed interval. Flat, or at least very well-fitting shoes are recommended.

Absolutely no experience is necessary and age is no barrier, all you need is the desire to jump up and dance about when you hear the music. We always walk through every dance, sometimes more than once, before we try it at the right speed and nobody worries about making mistakes as that all adds to the fun. Men will be especially welcome to join the three or four regulars who dance with us at the moment.

We meet again on Monday 16 September. If you would like any more information please phone me. Jane Preston, 01300 348 545.

Piddle Valley Over 60s

We had a very successful outing to Abbotsbury Gardens in June with absolutely brilliant weather. Our next outing will be to Salisbury on 2nd July leaving Piddletrenthide at 10am and returning at 4pm. The cost is £11. Lunch can be a picnic or eat in the Cathedral restaurant or in one of the many eating places in the city. Visitors are welcome on this trip if there are any spare seats on the coach, at a non- member rate.

52 www.piddlevalley.info On 6th August there will be a Garden Party at 3pm at Venta Silurum, Waterston by kind permission of Hilary and John, if wet it will be held in the Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall.

The Twinning visit to Longueville, May 28–31

Oh What a Lovely Weekend! (photos inside back cover) We went to school! Out of our party of 31 members who went to Normandy, six children visited a local primary school and took part in lessons. Pupils at the Piddle Valley School had prepared a booklet that Rumeh and Alex presented to the teacher and her class. Then, after writing the numbers one to six on the board and saying them aloud in French and English, everyone made dice from cardboard, using a lot of glue ! During the recreation period that followed, all the children played football together in the playground. Friendly links have been established and we hope that the children will keep in touch with their new French friends during the next school year. Our thanks to Jayne Brown and her team for their interest and support.

We went out to sea in horse-drawn carriages! On Saturday, everyone climbed aboard two large carriages drawn by six rare-breed Normandy Cob horses and were driven along the beach and into the bay to see the oyster and mussel beds. During a short stop on a sandbank we were each offered a glass of white wine and as many oysters to taste as we liked. This is something very special as the horses can only navigate the beds when the tide is turning. We later walked in the sunshine across the dunes at Gouville, with their multi-coloured beach huts.

And we celebrated together with a Carnival theme! In the evening Dave Bowen, our Chairman, presented the French with a case of Langham Estate wine from Dewlish before the gala dinner. Entertainments have now become a tradition at each visit and the Piddle Valley dancers put on a superb ‘ Black and White Tights www.piddlevalley.info 53 Dance‘; its optical illusions created by the costumes. Bill and his team of actors wrote and performed an hilarious sketch making fun of François Hollande, drawing on the latter’s amorous scooter exploits in Paris. Magdalena sang a thrilling Adele song as background to the sketch and then Ralph Bishop, nine, accompanying himself on guitar, sang two very popular songs and was given a standing ovation.

We were welcomed with warmth and generosity by the Longuevillais. Everyone stayed with a French family and experienced not only day to day life in France but also many treats, such as a trip to the zoo and visits to a local chateau, the restored abbey of La Lucerne and the pretty port of Granville. The only downside was the closure of the Christian Dior House for refurbishment while we were there, but we are already making plans for our next visit in 2017, when it will surely be first on the list !

We next welcome the French to the Piddle Valley in 2016. If you have enjoyed our photos and would like to join in these visits, please get in touch. Jo Thornton (348670)

Jayne Brown, Head Teacher June Jamboree! Well, what a great afternoon had by all! Thanks to all who came, volunteered, cooked, set up and cleared up afterwards. The May Pole dancing was superb, thank you Claire Warne, and of course the children too, for putting on a great show. We think the bands and atmosphere was great, matched by the fine weather and good showing from people linked and not linked to the school, which is much appreciated. Thank you also Nick and his fine pony, we have no idea how many laps you did but the rides were a great addition to the afternoon. The money raised (just over £2000!!!) is vital to the school and will be spent wisely.

Litter Picking – Village clean-up. The Parish Council has been advised that it can no longer organise or assist with what used to be the annual village spring-clean of verges and public areas. This is for the usual “Health & Safety” reasons. Any official support apparently would require special training, safety precautions to protect the workers, watchmen & insurance etc.

If any individual chooses to pick up litter as part of their being “out & about”, then of course that is entirely up to them.

21st August 1915 Private Alfred George Croad (Alton Pancras) Private Frederick Hallett (Piddletrenthide) Private Charles Jeanes (Piddletrenthide) Private William Collins (Piddlehinton) Private Cecil Albert Dacombe (Piddlehinton) All served in 5th Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment Private Walter J Gale (Piddlehinton) 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry (Queen’s Own)

We now return to Gallipoli where the campaign had reached stalemate. Fresh troops were landed at Suvla Bay on the night of 6th / 7th August and these included 5th Dorsets. The Dorset Yeomanry arrived at Suvla on 18th August.

On 21st August the British launched a major attack on the Turkish positions which overlooked the Suvla Plain. 5th Dorsets’ objectives were the enemy trenches in an area known as Hetman Chair.

The attack opened at 3.00 pm with a half-hour artillery barrage, the effect of which was almost negligible. The Battalion then advanced across 500 yards of open ground under shrapnel fire and took the Turkish front line with the bayonet. 40 yards beyond lay the enemies second line and the attacks came under such heavy fire that they were halted before they reached the trenches. The Regimental History describes how small parties of men beat off counter-attacks through the night, but by 7.00 the next morning they had been driven back to their original lines.

Of the 800 men who had started, about 250 survived.

The Dorset Yeomanry’s objective was Turkish trenches on an area known ad Scimitar Hill, about a mile to the north of the 5th Dorsets’ attack. Although they took and held the forward trenches, they were unable to advance and were ordered to retire to their own positions.

Of the 300 men who attacked (yeomanry units were smaller than infantry), 119 were lost.

The Battle of Suvla on 21st August 1915 was the blackest day of the whole War for the Valley. The bodies of Alfred George Croad, Frederick Hallett, Charles Jeanes, William Collins, Cecil Albert Dacombe and Walter Gale were never found and their names appear on the Cape Helles Memorial.

Alfred George Croad was born in Alton Pancras and was baptised on 19th March 1893,

60 www.piddlevalley.info the fourth of five children born to Charles and Priscilla Croad. He enlisted as a private in the 5th Dorsets and his regimental number – 10074 – shows that he was an early volunteer.

Frederick Hallett was from Piddletrenthide. Mention has already been made of another Hallett, Henry Robert, the young sailor killed when HMS Bulwark blew up in November 1914 (PVNV November / December 2014). The boys were twins, born in 1895 and christened in All Saints Church on Christmas Day that year. One can imagine what a joyful occasion that christening must have been, not only for the parents, William and Eliza, but for the whole village.

The Hallett family lived at Well Bottom, near Incombe Copse, where a beef unit stands today. The twins were followed by a sister, Kate, in 1898 and a younger brother, Douglas William, in 1899.

We cannot conceive the anguish suffered in that lonely cottage at Well Bottom when both sons were killed within 10 months of each other. They had not reached their 20th birthday and neither had a grave for the family to mourn over.

The names on the Memorial Hall plaques are in alphabetical order until the letter ‘H’ is reached. If the alphabet had been strictly followed, Frederick Hallett would have appeared at the bottom of one plate and his brother Henry Robert would have been at the top of the other. How thoughtful of the first Memorial Hall Committee to slightly rearrange the order so that the twins’ names appear next to each other.

All that is known of Charles Jeanes is that he was born in Piddletrenthide an was living in Broadstone when he enlisted.

William Collins was born in Charminster in1896 and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records shows that his mother, Mrs EM Collins, lived at 26, Colliton Street, Dorchester. The and that house still exists. Her name is given as his next of kin, so possibly she was widowed. Apart from being on the Piddlehinton Memorial, William Collins is also commemorated at All Saints Church, Dorchester, and on the Dorchester War Memorial.

Cecil Albert Dacombe was born in Sturminster Marshall in 1894. Records show him as the nephew of Gertrude Eliza Dacombe of Athelhampton, . Was he an orphan and his aunt the nearest relative ?

Walter Gale’s enlistment records show that he was born in Cheselbourne. ‘The Story of Piddlehinton’ has a photograph of him an also a picture of two other Gales – Arthur and Thomas – who emigrated to Canada before the War. Walter Gale is also commemorated on the Dorset Yeomanry Memorial in Sherborne Abbey. NHS Health Checks are available once every five years to people aged between 40-74 years, who do not have a pre-existing chronic condition. The NHS Health Check Programme assesses your risk of developing health problems such as Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes and Kidney Disease. The check takes 30 minutes and is based on straightforward questions and measurements, including family history, height, weight and blood pressure. There will also be a simple blood test to measure your cholesterol level. After your check you will be provided with a personalised action plan on how to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. If you would like to arrange an appointment please call the surgery on 01300 341666.

Top Tips for Patients on how to get the best from your appointment. • Ask yourself: How important is it that I’m seen quickly, or would I be better waiting for an appointment with a particular GP? If you have a long term condition you’ll probably benefit from a GP who knows you. • Don’t be put off by a GP who runs late – they may be spending needed time with patients. There may be an occasion when you would appreciate them running late for you. • Please consider what is achievable in 10 minutes. 4 problems in 10 minutes - that’s 150 seconds each. It is often better to come back again and spend more time on a problem rather than squeeze as many as you can into your 10 minute appointment. • Before you see the GP, work out in your own mind what you are worried about, and high- light any particular concerns. Consider preparing short notes. • Get to the point; try not to keep important issues until the end of your consultation. • Wear accessible clothing if you are likely to need to undress for an examination. • Make sure you understand what happens next; if you are not sure do ask the GP to go through the plan with you again. • Have your say and get your views heard; join our patient participation group, visit our website, complete the Friends & Family Test or let us know through our suggestions/com- ments box at reception.

When the Surgery is closed If someone is seriously ill or has had a serious accident dial 999 and ask for an ambulance. For urgent medical help or general health information & advice contact the Out Of Hours Service on 1 1 1

Named GP Changes to the GP contract mean that all patients in England, including children, will benefit from having a named, accountable doctor who will be responsible for coordinating their care. By the end of March 2016 the practice is required to assign all our patients a “Named GP”. Everyone will be allocated a named GP by the practice or you can request a specific doctor. At Puddletown Surgery all our patients have always had a named GP who is in overall charge of their care. You can find out your own GP by looking on the right hand side of your prescription, or ask at reception, who can easily look this up for you. Although this is a new requirement across the country we have always felt there is benefit for both you and us to have an ongoing and personal relationship within which we provide your care. You can still talk to any of our clinicians not just your Named GP. You can still have appointments with any of our clinicians not just your Named GP. If you do have a preference and would like to request for one of our doctors in particular to be your Named GP please ask at reception

Prescriptions Did you know that: • the NHS in England dispenses about 2.7 million items of medication per day? • In one study 50% of patients admitted to not taking their medication as they are prescribed • It is estimated that over £300 million is wasted each year because patients order medicines they never use and are therefore thrown away? If you are interested to know more, please visit our website and download our annual Prescribing Newsletter. http://www.puddletownsurgery.co.uk/website/ J81616/files/Puddletown%20Prescribing%20Newsletter.pdf
